Thor and Wonder Woman are very similar movies. They're both about superhero royalty from an isolated kingdom arriving on Earth to lear about mankind, and themselves. And while both movies are very good, only one of them has a satisfying ending. In this video we examine why Thor's ending was a masterpiece in setting the stage for the franchise to come, while Wonder Woman was a studio executive's checklist that made the franchise limp into Justice League

I can't take anything WW says seriously nowadays. Literally talks about the evils of man like sexism, war and being weak. Yet HER race, a race of WARRIORS, that would execute (in some continuities) men by them accidentally washing ashore and fled to a magical island to hide. Basically nothing but hypocrites.

I would say Wonder Woman thematically feels more like CA: First Avenger. But I also think most people liked Wonder Woman would say it "did work".
The thing that makes Thor a better movie is Loki. Loki is a GREAT villain and has the screen presence required to upstage every Avenger whereas Ares is never a real threat. Loki may be not super powerful but there are always emotional stakes. Regardless of how many times he deceives Thor, he still genuinely cares for him.

One of the things Man of Steel does well is show what it would looked like if 2 Gods fought each other and all the destruction it would cause and then cutting to Bruce to show the devastation on the ground. An open fight is also what we get in the airport battle in Civil War, the fight is all over the place and that's what makes it so interesting

My only disagreement with this analysis is on the twist itself. One big problem for the movie to begin with was it set up WWI Germany to be equally evil as WWII Germany, which simply was not the case. The twist was needed to fix that, to show that *all* humans are both good and evil.
But how the twist was handled, the fight, etc., etc.: I agree.

  • @CatalinaLinal7710

I remember watching Wonder Woman the first time in theater and thinking in the end just how much of an absolute WASTE killing of Ares this early was. I still think so.
The fact that Ares is shown to have been manipulating peoples minds into war and destruction for HUNDREDS of years should have been a plot twist for a much MUCH later point in the franchise when this truth can be interwoven into previous events/villains or even a gigantic plot twist in the "phase 2 or 3" of the DCEU they still tried to make happen at that point.
The concept behind Ares characters as a villainous GOD has so much potential to turn the entire narrative of a whole cinematic universe into a new direction, but they just wasted him in the very first wonder woman movie that played almost one hundred years before the normal events of the DCEU, literally working directly AGAINST the huge narrative potential this villain had for the long game.

Honestly I thought wonder woman was a better movie by far. While yes the ending of Thor was better than that of Wonder Woman, the trenches scene was just fantastic. A lot of people who have dabbled in WW1(learning) know just how terrible trenches are. This paired with the city saving scene was beautiful. While both moves did have a lot of character development, I feel wonder woman did it better. While Thor learned about respect and life, Diana learned about the powerful things like war. She made huge sacrifices to attempt to fix a broken world, and the love of her life ended up making a similar sacrifice. In the end she learned that there is no “man is good” or “man is evil”, it’s that both traits exist in all people, and there is not always something you can do about it.

And don't get me started on wonderwoman1984 because if she said she wasn't helping mankind why the hell was she out in the open? Ugh.
Wonder Woman was amazing but the ending really could have been better. There wasn't enough attention on Steve's sacrificed, instead everybody(the audience) were just gearing up for the battle between Wonder Woman and Ares because that's where the focus is, as Ryan said there were no stakes . plus ares should have been written well not written but like his costume could have been better, and lighting was horrible plus why did he stay the old man? When it was revealed that the old man was a disguise I really thought that you would have revealed what he actually looks like and not just the outfit but himself.

I enjoyed Wonder Woman for its fantasy fulfilment, but as a story, Thor was far superior. Yes, the trenches scene was great but her characterisation fell far flatter than Thor's, and the villain was your typical eyeroll two dimensional sort of guy. Plus, ever notice that all the female scientists in DCU are villains, while the girl who likes babies and falls in love with your typical good American boy is the great heroine? Thor was seriously flawed personality wise, and Loki, while a villain, had depth and an explanation for why he is the way he is.

Have Diana stumble onto a concentration camp so that by the end she is ready to tear Aires a new one, only to flip it and reveal none of this was his doing. He's drawing power from it yes (if I remember how his powers work) but having the God of War himself horrified at the acts of man would have been a fascinating attack on her very core belief system.
And to cap it off, end it on her learning about the bombing of Hiroshima to really drive home the point that men are capable of unimaginable cruelty. And thats why she wound up withdrawn from the world for all those years.

One thing I appreciate about the WW ending, for lack of a better term, is how wacky it was.
As disclaimers - it was tacked on and ruined an obviously better ending. When I saw it in the theater, my son had to use the bathroom right after Diana killed the general. I walked him out explaining that Ares is a very notable villain in the comics, but the movie is going for a message about man's capacity for inhumanity. Walked back in to Ares floating around with fire everywhere and I was like...oh, ok that's the guy I told you about I guess. Also, I agree the cgi was undercooked and Ares being tacked on this way prevented his presence from having enough emotional impact.
So what I mean about appreciating? It's sort of a push and pull comic fans have with these movies, about what is wild enough without scaring away general audiences. And most of us know we went through a long phase of studios insisting the mainstream wouldn't accept things too outlandish. So, on some level, I did find it enjoyable that the British guy would pop up and yell "surprise!" before morphing into the God of War and setting everything ablaze. It felt fairly "comic book" zany, even if it stole something from the movie. Thor's final battle has more emotional weight and is the better film scene for sure. But, as a long time comic reader, Thor and Loki have felt underwhelming in the MCU as far as ability. Thor started inching closer with Ragnarok and up, but I still can't really picture Hemsworth hitting a Celestial hard enough to crack it, or having a fight with Gor so intense that neighboring planets break.

Warner had such an amazing opportunity to make good DC movies but they just seem to not care. They were so desperate to be on pair with Marvel/Disney that they rushed everything and that's why he have weak storylines, unrelatable characters, pointless villains, some of the worst cgi, dark battles that you can't enjoy, etc.
I mean, not everything has been bad. Some of the acting is good, a few of the stories are decent, a couple of scenes are really memorable, and overall you can enjoy most DC movies. Neo and Agent Smith's last fight was meant to be two powerful entities battling it out with no one winning. The unstoppable force verses the unmovable object, the point was how do we get back to the way things were and stop the war. No if they hurt each other in the fight. Thor and Loki' last fight was the top of the pyramid two arcs reaching the same point but both characters are where the other started kind of. With the added emotional weight of them being brothers. Now Wonder Woman's end was crap. They had the perfect ending and WB blew it big time. It linked in with Zack's shaky universe he was building. But then Wonder Woman 84 also destroys the good ending by fighting crime in the 80s in public. Then in BvS she is meant to be hiding since the end of WW1. With nobody seeing her. That clearly doesn't work. Wonder Woman was so close and yet so far. Still the best "DCEU" by far it just could have been so much better. Yet WB wonder why they are still far, far behind the MCU.

Exactly this. We now also know that Snyder and Jenkins fundamentally disagreed with how to handle the character of Diana and the Amazons but the people in power smashed the movies together anyway leading to the embarrassing situation where Diana sits out all the worst human atrocities like WWII and Vietnam War only to come back out to fight a cave troll in BvS, and then they retconn that background again in WW84 saying Diana had always fought the good fights, only to have Snyder throws yet another spanner into the works to say that his vision is always supposed to be a different alternate universe when he got to pander to his fanbase with his JL Snyder cut. Argh what a damn mess and disservice WB had done to the DC characters.

While the "humans destroy themselves, no Ares" might seem like the perfect ending it's not, this is a action movie so a ending big battle is essential 1 reason ppl go se superheroe movies is for those big action scenes. Patty Jenkins was so happy that WW2 didn't have a big villain ending battle and she was saying how the studio wanted one and she convinced them not to and all but she counted her chick way too early bc of if the main complaints of the movie was that there was no ending battle, like I said superhero movies need one, so if they had accounted for the final battle from the start I think WW1 would have turned out much better
