    The BEST Beginner 35mm Range Finder | The Yashica Electro 35 GSN
    In this video, I review the legendary and popular Yashica Electro 35 GSN. I borrowed this camera for about three weeks and used it as I would any other camera in my collection. This time spent made me come to the conclusion that the Yashica Electro 35 GSN is the best beginner 35mm range finder on the market.
    In the video I go through the list of pros and cons, and give a final run down of who I think this camera is suited to best. Walter's Camera Repair not only fixes film and digital cameras, but they also post process film for an affordable rate as well. Here's their website: www.walterscamerarepairs.com
    Camera Used:
    Yashica Electro 35 GSN
    Film Used:
    Fuji Superia 400
    * All photos processed and scanned by Walter's Camera Repair.
    About this channel:
    Here on my channel I explore 35mm film photography, street photography, portrait photography, cheap photography, bts photography, black and white photography, cheap dslr cameras, color negative film photography, medium format photography, medium format cameras, 120mm film photography, and photography improvement, much more.
    I'm also team Olympus Om-1 and Om-4 at the moment. However, I still use and explore other cameras. Street photography cameras are my jam, but medium format cameras like the Pentax 67 are quickly climbing the scale.

    I have been shooting with mine (GS) for 20 years now, and it is one of my favorite cameras - I much prefer it over the Canonet GLIII. The lens is sharper wide open, and the auto exposure is remarkably accurate, even for night shots when it will stay open for several seconds. Just a gem of a camera - and I say that as the owner of a Hasselblad and 4x5 cameras.

    I have finally reached the point that if I am shooting film I have to be 100% mechanical, no auto anything...I have had THREE Electro GSNs and they all worked for a period then dead. Similar with other models. Am hanging on to my Contax G2, for now, but probably even that camera will be sold. I am going for RELIABILITY. Congrats to anyone out there that has had better luck with vintage camera gear that is battery dependent....EVERYONE STAY SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAVE A GOOD CHRISTMAS OR WHATEVER FORM OF HOLIDAYS YOU CELEBRATE...when family asks "what would you like for a gift" a good answer is always " more film or a book on photography" ...haha

    Actually just sold one of these - pretty decent camera. With the rangefinder patch, you can “darken” it by placing a piece of blue vellum over the viewfinder window on the front. It adds more contrast and helps when things are too bright.

    The 35GSN is certainly the most popular and abundant one. A couple months ago I was in the market for a cheap rangefinder but couldn't find one that had everything I'd like. Most only have shutter priority and the ones with aperture priority either have much darker lenses, or the lenses are too long for me, or the fastest shutter speed is restricted to 1/250s. Also prices in EU are much different than in USA, same for availability.

    Agree with your review on the Yashica, found your experiences mirror mine after trying a roll of film on the one I bought last month. Got mine for around 45ish in great shape along with the wide and tele lens attachment and a small optical viewfinder. Really wish there is a way to make it easier to focus, with glasses I found it tough (I also have issues with my Minolta SLR without the diopter attachment)

    Thanks for the review and pics Talya. I just got an Electro 35 G for $7 in remarkable condition for its age. It just needs new light seals and will be good to go. I've been wanting a rangefinder film camera but collector prices are absurd in 2023. There are so many of these cameras though and I think everyone shies away from them because of the "pad of death" issue.

    I like the vibe your video has, good energy! I shot some of my best photos on the GTN, I like the way it renders rich red color the best. One downside it can eat up battery like the Cookie Monster does cookies. Also it has the "pad of death" inside which isn't that inviting...

    Great video. I love my Spiderman camera. I found one pristine but broken for under $20. Got it CLA'd and it's one of my favorites. It's exactly as you described. I take it out when I want something more than a point n' shoot, but I'm feeling too casual and lazy to use a manual SLR. I like the 45mm, and it nails exposures.

    This camera does seem to split opinions. Some day best exposure metering ever, best lens sharpness, others say bad exposure only ok lens etc. Guess it is one you have to try yourself, and luckily it is cheap enough that everyone can.. Sadly the video camera looks better than the film. Love the bus stop pic! (at least on youtube)

    Is there a manual RF you recommend? I have 4 years shooting Sony, understand cameras quite well, but I have been looking into a manual RF.
    I have been considering the Canon VT Deluxe, but that’s pricey. Almost all the Yashicas I’ve found have been $100-$200 🥺

    • @TalyaAdams
      @TalyaAdams  Před 3 lety +1

      I've been thinking about this for a minute, and I don't know if there is a quality rf camera for under $100. You'd have to get on eBay and maybe buy a camera with a broken light meter or some dings on it. Or go thrifting and hope to get lucky on a find. When I made this video the Yashica GSN wasn't that expensive. Matter of fact, my friend bought it at the Goodwill for $50. So, try there too.
      I'll let you know if I think of a cheaper alternative. Good luck!

    • @TannerGarcia
      @TannerGarcia Před 3 lety

      @@TalyaAdams I don’t mind spending $200 - $300. I was just referencing the Yashica being priced at that $100 to $200 mark.
      I don’t know if the Canon VT Deluxe is worth $500 with a lens? I bought a Minolta HiMatic point/shoot and got 34/36 photos from roll 1 and it croaked 😔
      I appreciate your time and response. I’ll keep looking! *sigh*

    That battery lasts for years. This camera has no battery problem.
    Yes it is an auto exposure camera
    But in fact it takes only one decision for you.
    It just decides on the shutter speed. That is it..
    And you can still manipulate that indirectly as a wider apperature will give you faster shutter and narrower will give you a slower shutter.
    Are you shooting something fast? Just open your aperature more..
    The only thing I would like to change about this camera is its size.
    I would like to make it smaller.
    Other than that, it is just perfect
    It is a precise rangefinder with paralax correction , a bright viewfinder and a very very reliable light meter.

  • @shaunmaddox

    I definitely wouldn’t call it a poor man’s Leica. I understand Leica is a high end brand for range finders but it has it’s own character. I personally like images from the Yashica Electro. I guess it boils down to one’s needs and preferences

    • @TalyaAdams
      @TalyaAdams  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't like calling things poor versions of other things. Like when people call mustangs poor man's sports cars. It's just rude. The Yashica definitely holds its own and occupies a space other cameras don't. Thanks for watching!

    It is the most over rated camera on the web. Very nice lenses and design but... Loading the film is so boring that I take five minutes to understand if the film is engaged, It is a manual camera with only one exposure time.. I think about 1/30"... the light meter is so.. slow that it is practically unusable in fast situations, the focusing ring is slow and it is hard to focusing in street.. SO... don't buy it. There others cameras much better of this.
