This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the new Toyota Corolla Cross subcompact crossover versus the new Honda HR-V subcompact SUV. The HR-V and Corolla Cross have a 2L 4-cylinder matched to a CVT but the Toyota offers more power, 169 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque compared to the Honda with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Both have FWD and AWD options available. The HR-V and Corolla Cross offer a comfortable drive and are excellent in the city but once you get them on the highway, they both lack power when passing and cabin noise increases. Comparing size, these are good family vehicle options in this segment. The HR-V is over 4.2” longer than the Corolla Cross. The Toyota has an inch more front row legroom, the HRV wins in second row space offering an extra 5.7” and they both have about the same amount of cargo capacity behind the second row. Overall cargo space goes to the Corolla Cross with an extra 11 cubic feet of space. The HR-V offers 7” of ground clearance which is less than the Corolla Cross at 8.2”. Both the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda HR-V are equipped with similar features, but both don’t offer ventilated front seats, heated rear seats or a power passenger seat. The Corolla Cross has a few features the HR-V doesn’t like an available power tailgate and a power driver seat. In the US, a power driver seat is available on the top trim of the HR-V but not in Canada. The HR-V has available wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto which the 2022 Corolla Cross doesn’t have but it is coming for 2023 along with a Corolla Cross Hybrid option. The Toyota Corolla Cross has better fuel economy, AWD gets 8.1L/100 km, 29 MPG city and 7.4L/100 km, 32 MPG highway. HR-V 9.4L/100 km, 25 MPG city and 7.8L/100 km, 30 MPH highway.
The Honda HR-V is more expensive with a FWD starting price of $28,730 CAD/$23,650 USD compared to the Corolla Cross $24,890 CAD/$22,445 USD. HR-V AWD $31,030 CAD/$25,150 USD, Corolla Cross AWD $26,290 CAD/$23,745 USD. The HR-V AWD top trim $37,130 CAD/$28,950 USD and the Corolla Cross AWD top trim $33,990 CAD/$27,875 USD.

Its almost like Honda doesn’t really want to complete in this category. I’m a big fan of Honda, but you’d have to be insane not to appreciate Toyota’s value. Honda appears to competing against itself (CR-V). The Corolla Cross is going to be an absolute hit. Style and reliability? Check, and check. And then add the price difference… now you’ll have the best selling vehicle in Toyota’s lineup. I know two people who were cross shopping the Toyota against the Subaru Crosstrek. Toyota is listening to their clients, while Honda is missing this opportunity. Thanks for another comparison video.

You guys are great. A very comprehensive review. I am an American but live in Thailand and my next car will be TOYOTA CROSS HYBRID. I owned 6 Honda cars in the past 40 years with a total of million miles on my Hondas! Thank you for helping me make my mind. In Thailand; like Canada; Honda models carry a premium on their pricing, which I don’t personally think is warranted.

  • @Flying-Fox-of-Snowy-Mountain

Corolla Cross wins hands down with pricing and giving you more with rear ac vents and higher hp. I recently test drove one and found it quite pleasing to drive around the block (twice). Didn't get to go on the highway though. When I got back I jumped to the rear seats and found alot of room behind driver seat. I was really surprised as I thought it would be tight with my set driving position and I am 5'6. It has alot more than my Mazda3 sedan for sure. I will be ordering the hybrid later this year. If the HRV wants to compete, drop in the 1.5T and add in the air vents the China ZRV has(same car) with current pricing.

I still would go with the 2.0 naturally aspirated, over the 1.5 turbo engine. Non turbo more reliable on the long run, than a small engine with turbo. Turbos in gas powered engines tend to not be reliable as it ages.

I am looking to get a compact SUV as a second, small family vehicle, and both the HRV and Corolla Cross are on my radar. But, as a small family vehicle, safety and space are important for me. In this regard the new HRV is interesting, though its cargo capacity is a bit on the low side.

We're going for the Toyota Corolla Cross XLE this time, not because it's cheaper with a auto tail gate, but also the IIHS top safety pick + rating.

I wonder if the larger 2.5 litre engine from the Rav4 could be stuffed under the Corrolla Cross hood for a sport model. (They did it with the old Maytrix!) I love that 2.4 litre in the Rav 4 hybrid(even when it sounds abit like a tractor when accellerating).

I prefer the HRV. The gas mileage is worse because it doesn't have direct injection, which you don't want anyway for reliability reasons. I've looked very closely at the HRV and Cross, and all of the trims. The HRV Sport is the one to go for. You get remote start that is meant to be known and built to work at a distance unlike the newer Toyota fob, the Honda fob on that trim auto senses you, and you get heated front seats. It looks a lot better inside (and outside) too. I've driven both. Toss in that 2L Honda engine which is probably the most reliable engine on the market today, and you have a winner. In the US if you find an MSRP dealer you can get it plated and OTD on the road for just under 30. Best deal on the market in my opinion.

yes except that 2L Honda is probably the most reliable engine on the entire new car market today. It doesn't have direct injection, which most cars do, hence the 3-4MPG loss. But it's going to be more reliable compared to anything with direct injection. I'd take that hit for something that is most likely to hit 300,000 miles if you want to keep it that long.

I am a huge Acura/Honda fan, but in this case, I just don’t understand Honda thinking on asking for a more premium price but not giving us a more upscale product for the money. Also, why couldn’t Honda have put the 1.5T motor in the hrv? They could have detuned it to differentiate it from Civic and CRV models, say maybe 165 horses for hrv. This would be closer to the Toyota Cross’ 169 horsepower. Come on Honda, you can do much better for your customers.

But Honda Canada is practicing a strange price range for its recent cars : an HRV that costs too much compared to the competition and same for Civic Hatchback over a Civic Sedan. Also, to me the look of the HRV is dated as the engine that has been borrowed from an old Civic generation. Honda is pushing its luck too much !!! Fans like me are begining to look at other brands.

Given the multi year development cycles for cars, it does make you wonder if there is collusion or espionage such that the Honda "Civic Cross' comes out so soon after the Corolla Cross and is head to head. I give the edge to the Cross - dynamic force engine is more powerful and efficient, direct shift cvt, simple proven AWD, little lower cost. Both are good though, brand loyalty will be the difference for buyers. Yeah, could use more power and be quieter. The hybrid versions could be significant in that regard.

Hi, I am in Qatar and here the story on pricing is somewhat different.. HRV EX, the top trim, price is 93k QR whereas Corolla cross is priced at 106k & 114k (both hybrid trim). So in this case what do you suggest? Which is do you think is more value to money?
Also I am not heavy user, going to have normal family kind of use and Qatar has the finest road. No hills, no forest and definitely no snow...lol.
I really appreciate if you can please reply. I am not that great with car knowledge, actually just started driving school so need some words of advice. Thank you in advance.

Get the HRV. It's amazing and engaging to drive plus comfortable driving in your highly developed country, pretty interior and exterior, cheaper than Corolla cross. Toyota is a great choice as well with loaded features as explained by these prodigious couple.

I wouldn't buy either of these unless it was a hybrid, this close to full electrification. I prefer the Hybrid version from Toyota Cross, because of their extreme experience with Hybrids. I would enjoy Honda's superior crisp handling. Toyota's history with Hybrid technology is stellar.
And this being a utility car, a base hybrid unit works for me.
Toyota would be my pick of these two.
By the way, what are the uniquely identifiable features that make a European Styled Car?🤔

    Civic cross vs Corolla cross
But I’m not for these 2 in this class. Rather prefer crosstrek, CX30, or Seltos.
Corolla Cross is noisy n interior is quite inadequate compared to others, although it is very surprisingly drive better than expected in snow.
The CRV’s interior is good, but lack of power, n not sure is it good enough in winter’s weather. It is overpriced in Canada.

I don't find a single reason to buy the HRV over the Corolla Cross, especially if the price is factored in. I like everything better on the Cross, including the interior design, though the HRV seems to have better materials. And while neither is exactly a beauty queen, the exterior design of the Cross is much more appealing to me, especially the front end (whoever design the front end of the HRV needs to find another job, and pay royalties to the designer of the Ford Escape). Having said that, the upcoming Cross Hybrid will probably steal every other subcompact SUV's lunch; Toyota won't be able to keep any of them in their showrooms, provided they even get to the showrooms (they'll probably be pre-purchased for years in advance!)

As much as I love Honda, I actually find Corolla Cross much better value-for-money and offering more engine choices for most consumers. The optional hybrid Corolla Cross will make sure, there will be a lengthy waiting list, for years to come. Both base engines are unremarkable but enough for most buyers. However, HR-V definitely more spacious, handles sharper and more fun-to-drive thanks to its Civic architecture.
