We had this when riding atv.. old guy making photos of my license plate.. Confronting them is fun, but they wont listen.. The world is filled with idiots these days.

She was rude because she was annoyed by the drones as she (might) live close by. Then stepped in her car (getting more angry), then park opposite Henrik with drones, now being pissed. I get that. Thats why staying friendly and polite is probably best, most chances of her calming down as well. Her filming Henrik (is that even allowed like that? Not were i live, so full frontal filming) is all she got. Henrik wisely did the same. And there it ends i guess.

I've been flying R/C aircraft for 30 years and there was never an issue before. People would come over to see what you are doing and ask questions etc. It wasn't until the media gave the hobby a bad rap did this become a thing. With that said, anyone that would go out of their way to mess with another person that is enjoying their hobby is quite frankly a bad person. She did this with the sole intent of getting you into trouble. She really needs to mind her own F'ing business....
I would argue irresponsible flyers gave it a bad rap, not media. If we don't police our own we will get cracked down on. It's up to the responsible ones to speak up and set examples
@@johnanthonycreative Sure, a couple bad apples and the media turned it into the devil. "They are going crash airplanes and spy on your kids." Now we need a pilots license to fly an autonomous vehicle. (which I personally will not get) Quad-copters such as DJI's and others are probably the safest R/C aircraft out there at this point. You have to try to crash them. The media ran story after story non stop for months brainwashing the ignorant public with a new boogie man. Essentially it was all hype (minus a few exceptions) and look where we are now... Everything is going to be illegal at this rate.... I used to fly high powered rockets and the ATF along with others said we could shoot down aircraft and that rocket propellant was an explosive. Which it is not by definition. They forced regulations on the storage of motors (metal containers 50 feet from a building which needed to be approved via the ATF and local fire department etc. Now that hobby is all but gone... This sort of regulation is perpetuated out of fear. Manufactured fear.
yeah it is anti-drone propaganda. simple as that. a friend of mine said "I don't like drones". she did not know why, but she didn't like drones. still has a smartphone... smartphones are an order of magnitude more dangerous when it comes to privacy, than any drone. a drone is just a camera with freedom, I think goverments also like it that they succesfully put that killer drone image onto the private drones, away from their dirty shit they do. our drones have nothing to do with the military killer drones... but people like to be "the informer" for the police, etc.. thereby invading our personal freedom with no reason.. that in itself is illegal.

I feel kinda' sad for people like this who must have nothing more interesting in their lives other than trying to impose their own will on other people. Sadly, its something that all drone users will experience at some point and you really have to be prepared to stand your ground and have as much 'evidence' on you to prove that you are within your rights to be flying where you are. Lets hope this lady discovers life at some point and stops wasting her time being a busy-body !!

I always keep moving my location, and never fly in same location more than one time a week. This lessens your chance of being confronted by a local. You handled it well as you could, the Bird Lady wasn't willing to listen to reason. Thanks for sharing.
I agree, and also try to stand in a less visible area so that it isn't obvious what you are doing. It's ridiculous to have to try and "hide" when you're doing something perfectly safe, legal, and inoffensive, but there are too many people out there who think they ought to be able to stop anyone from doing anything at any time.
@@TigerKhan1990 I don't have a license, so I always hide and only fly in areas where are no people around. It is harder to find these places every year.

She was interfering with a flight with an aircraft and she should be prosecuted for interfering with a drone operator cursing a danger to you and others, I would contact the Police as this behaviour is not acceptable. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
She seemed pretty hysterical. I think that lady was just caught up in being right. It’s like talking to a wall trying to explain your authorization. Maybe you should have printed rules and regulations permitting your flight, but then she would say it was counterfeit. You could fly in the middle of the ocean and she would say that you are bothering the fish. 😂

Hate drones? I think the sound they make is awfull, no hate. I was looking to get one, lol. Still think the sound is horrible, so i’ll wear earplugs of some sort.

Do you remember me? I'm the one who said people engaging into active flights should cop a fine. These law makers need to get some logic! How is it our fault if someone walks up and starts an uninformed about the rules confrontation! Cheers for sharing you should continue posting these, maybe a law maker will end up watching

About the same happened to me, for the fist time btw, a few weeks ago.
A guy, quite annoyed, walked up to me and started telling me what I could and couldn't do. "The rules are..... " It was 100% wrong.
But I landed that drone and said: "sorry that I annoyed you". After 15 minutes I went looking for him, when he was a bit calmed down, and I explained him the formal rules and regulations. He wasn't annoyed anymore, so he listened, but he still didn't believe me.
So, I decided to print a summary of the rules, just to share when needed.
I didn't print it yet btw, but I think I should....
Word of advise, been in same situation a few times, also here in Denmark :-)
I have a copy of the rules in my drone backpack, that I gladly give people to read.
So far it has saved the situation 4-5 times. It has also created positive relations. quite important for us, in the places we fly :-)
A car driven by a woman is much more dangerous than a drone being stabilized by 16 or more gps satellites.
That's true, we must be mentally prepared in advance to react in a situation like that (of course ,always complaining the under 250gr. category rules) .Thank's for sharing your experience !
Well done! You handled it well...stayed calm, polite, yet assertive. I've had many very positive encounters and a single negative one. The negative one was super stressful because he threatened to shoot my drone next time he sees it. I had landed fortunately and after some calm discussion, we ended up talking about great places to drone. I'm in Canada.
I live on Vancouver Island and fly from parks along the ocean and I get people and children coming over to talk to me frequently or get thumbs up from guys. I have never had a complaint from anybody however, I am cautious about where I land and take off and make sure people are not close to me when I takeoff and land especially when flying in gusty wind. One funny moment when a young women with about a six year old child were walking along the beach, the boy saw the drone lift off and came running up to me and jumped on my lap. I was sitting on a rock and thankfully I had a good grip on my controller when he landed on me. The boys mother came running and apologizing for her sons behaviour, I told her it was all good. I spent five or so minutes with the boy explaining things, he was very happy and his mother came over and thanked me for taking time for her son.
Thanks so much for sharing, Henrik. I had similar situations as well, the worse was the moment when person decided to start to throw the stones at my drone without saying the word first... And then explaining that he does not like the drones in the mountains. I was really scared after that incident and for several months had a block to fly...
Most recent one was on the mountain again when I took the first possible train to the top to make sure that there are no people and older lady being originally few hundreds meters away decided to explain me that I'm not allowed to fly if she is there...
It's time to take weapons to our drone flying because done people become so animated over their self-righteous imaginations. I found this when I was a helicopter pilot. There is something really quite psycho about these people.
@@Fomites no needs for weapons, we have the best one: camera! But I agree with you, that people are sometimes harsh on drone pilots. Recently I saw great vest with sign: Drone Pilot, do not disturb. Maybe that will be a way. Write something like certified official drone pilot, disturbing prohibited by law.

It’s ironic that people find it ok to distract a pilot when they’re flying creating a much bigger risk than someone who understands how to fly a drone
Good video and excellent insight. You make a very good point about her creating a distraction while you are concentrating on flying. Some people just hate drones I guess, but maybe others are just ignorant too.
When I took my remote pilot certificate, then one of the instructors (a professional pilot and drone operator for TV) told us was that he was always using a landing pad and some cones to mark the area and the most important thing: wear a reflective vest. Then people suddenly went from telling him stuff about not being allowed to fly to asking questions of pure interest. So I always wear neon green vest with 'Drone operator' on it when flying. And I always bring my licenses with me to show people just in case.

Shows what a true enthusiast you are. Yes, I remember watching the ‘bird man’ video some time ago and must say that it kinda put me off drone flying. These self-righteous people exist everywhere and all it needs is the bad timing for you to have to confront one. The sad thing is that these people will be the last one to realize they are wrong and apologize as, I’ve said, they are self-righteous.

I have a reflective vest that says "Drone operator, Do not Disturb" when you look like a professional people will treat you like one and be more patient instead of instantly going into discussion while you are still flying

Its amazing how people judge , think they outsmart you and they are totally wrong. The woman with the phone is hilarious 😂, at least she doesn’t hit your drone or do something physical to you.

Regarding to your earlier video with the “Birdman” I have tried to be prepared for a situation like this - and you are so right Henrik - it is hard to be prepared, and it is so easy to know what you should have said afterward. I too had to permission to fly my drone around where I live. I have only 1 complaint last year. But everyone said I was fine and my drone is so quiet that no one can here it inside. I always follow the rules and I fly very carefully.

Im not even sure' she is alloved to directly take' up her phone and start making footage of your person like that' and then directly goes to take your car and your numberplates, as it pretty clear she does that as a way to intimidate you with loaded threats for possible consequences.. (you cant do that)

And she gotta fall into second categorie, as it as clearly "you" as a subject - as she also says.. I want your picture, and then starting to record you and your car and then your numberplate.
The law is actually pretty strict about this and even falls into criminal law, simply to prevent people do as she did,.. "using portraits as loaded threats." - as I now got your picture and your car and your information, and you just wait and see what I will do with it"
You don't know what she will do.. will she call her son in Hell Angels to wip you around (likely not but still, the law don't differs from person to person), or will she contact police and given them a story, or will she contact some friends in the system or the district. or ??
Obvious all speculation taken to the extreme, but simply from a law-perspective and how such threats with "portraits" can be used as loaded threats.,

I will follow all of the drone laws and stay respectful to others but, In my state we have open carry! I also have an obligation to protect my aircraft just as a pilot would behind a locked cabin door! I don’t know if someone approaching me yelling and screaming is going to cause harm to me by endangering my life or is going to plan on trying to take over my drone.
I’d tell that b. I. T c h! To go make me a sandwich! If you show aggression and I feel threatened and I feel like my life and property are in danger and a person could take over operations and use my drone for destruction! I will take action.

There's probably not a commercial drone pilot who hasn't had one or more of these interactions while in the field, with a birdman/birdlady karen. It's interesting bc we have different rules in the USA where I fly, but the way to handle it is just the same. Great vid thanks for sharing.
At this point, I almost (almost) feel bad for women that are actually named Karen and don't act like a well...... Karen.
Tough moments for sure! ;-) This is precisely why, when I fly in public places I always dress the part. (Helmets, vests, business cards, road signage, cones, vehicle, radios, etc. all marked with FAA and Aerial Northwest identification.) Frequently, I use a VO that runs interference and handles initial public person-to-person in-field engagements. In doing so, I have never run into any trouble. Sure, people are curious, but once they understand I am conducting official business, they stand down. 90% of success is showing up and looking the part. I call it "Preventative Practices!"
Clearly, each situation is unique. The more professional we look, the less people challenge our flight activities. We let our equipment, attire, and behavior do most of the talking (if you know what I mean!)

I got my first drone in fall 2017. In the time since I find people are either really curious and polite with questions, or they're nasty with accusations that I'm breaking a law or something.
Good for me it's about 90% nice, and 10% negative.
I offer to let the nice ones see my phone screen and show them drone view and they are almost always in a slight awe. 😃

That's why I sold my DJI S900 a few years ago. Didn't enjoy it anymore... Still bought a Mini 3 again.;)
I recommend that you put on a safety vest. Optimally with the inscription CREW or whatever.

Here in the UK our rules are slightly different but basically the same. Joe Public have invariably never encountered a drone/drone user and seem to think the whole thing is illegal (mostly). I follow DJ Audits in th UK on CZcams and he has it all down pat and deals with people quite well. You probably know of him. Saying all this I dont actually own a drone (yet) but hope to add this facility to my photography hobby……. I'm now a subscriber……..cheers mate

Well handled - its a shame those ignorant of drone flying rules and regulations decide to apply their own rules and regulations. Would be better if she took the time to listen and check out what you were telling her. At the suggestion of another Vlogger I carry a handout with the information to give out as talking/discussing while flying is breaking the rules as you rightly said. Nicely played.
Thanks for the video. There are a lot of similarities to flying drones here in the United States, as many people are very ignorant of the rules and regulations and have apparently been watching the news media too much and just hate drones for no reason. They immediately assume you’re trying to spy on them or something. It doesn’t matter that you’re trying to get some beautiful aerial photos and following all the rules. “My mind is made up, don’t confuse me with the facts!”
My understanding of the law in the UK is that the owner of private property does not own its airspace, which like all other is subject to regulation by the Civil Aviation Authority. The pilot of a drone lighter than 250 g no more requires permission to fly over private land than the pilot of a Boeing 707. What is more, for the drone no least height above the ground is stipulated. However, to allow a drone to hover a few feet above a neighbour's garden would be inconsiderate and unwise, there being enough prejudice against drones without anyone's giving real cause for grievance.
As for dealing with people that think they can order you not to fly in this or that place, I have not so far had such a nuisance to deal with. But I suggest you might consider, against "you are not allowed to fly here", the response "I am, and you must not distract me while I do so, or you will be guilty of a criminal offence." And if you are wearing a camera you could add "and your behaviour is being recorded."
Another way of looking at it is Ryanair, EasyJet or a PPL with a Cessna can fly over their private property. So why can’t a drone? It’s the same thing.
If anything an Airbus A380 would cause more damage than a 249g drone.
You handled that very well. I find it hard to understand why people get so angry and want to impose their rules (that they have invented) on other people. Everyone is so entitled these days - it’s why I like to stay as far from people as possible - even when I’m not flying drones 😂

It is interesting that the peoples "right to privacy" that we have to take notice of is something people like this think only applies to them. A classic case of her rights being far more important than yours (in her mind). It is also a fun point that individuals such as these seem to think that it is perfectly all right for them to trample all over YOUR right not to be filmed or photographed without your permission. This is why I never deploy without having my phone set to record video and velcro-ed to the front of my jacket. I did notice that you mentioned "Drone Anxiety" - I thought I was the only one who got uptight and defensive whenever I got my drone out to set it up. How sad that when doing something (always safely and legally) that I genuinely enjoy and find fascinating, I end up a bag of nerves waiting for some bombastic sticky-beak to bustle up, wagging a finger and telling me that I'm a criminal or a voyeur.
That's a common mistake. In many countries, there is actually no right to privacy from being filmed in a public space without permission. :)

Had a similar incident recently on a beach at the Baltic Sea. A lady approached me and said I should respect her privacy. She was fully clothed (no swimwear or such) and I had not been flying over her or even the beach but only over the water to record two people on a float stand-up paddleing closely to the cost (and they knew that I was going to do just that). What angers me the most is that these people just appear out of nowhere and act as if they know everything while in realtity they are accusing us drone pilots of things that are not against the law. And if you try to inform them about it they don't want to listen. Fortunately I had already shot most of my footage and so I told her that she was wrong but that I will stop recording anyway.
A funny thing is that his drone warning says 'Prohibited to fly'. Lmao.

Where I live and am beginning to fly (Australia) many people make ratbag claims about "illegal to film" and "cannot fly over private property". There is actually no such thing in our law, nor in any of our drone rules from CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority). In fact it is quite legal to fly over private property, as long as you do not present a safety hazard or undue privacy intrusion. Additionally it is perfectly legal to photograph people in public spaces, and even to photograph or film into private property from a public space. If these things were illegal it would be exceptionally difficult for a whole lot of routine procedures to occur. For example: routine aviation, air ambulance, police aerial patrols, fire-service helicopter operations, TV and newspaper photo-journalism, security camera use on streets or even on private property to name just a few.
One good tip that I was given was to get the list of the local drone rules, print them out and have as a laminated card so they can show you exactly WHICH rule they claim you are breaking. I will have the list copied on my mobile phone too.
This might help, but Karens do be Karens; there is little to do to stop the ignorant.
Laws are pretty stupid in NZ basically states you can't fly any where with out permission but councils don't understand laws

as a drone owner and user for over 2 years, i've had no problems on my first year and a half, but it's at pretty recently that i start getting bothered! by karens, making up their own laws...

The world is full of assholes of one kind or another. A sort of Mexican stand-off. She does not like drones and considers you subordinate to her wishes. Whereas, you like flying drones and think that she has the right to state her case according to intelligent information. Additionally, you were civilised enough to consider her privacy. You got what you wanted; through flying your drone, and she got her panties in a bunch. I think that you came out of the encounter well on top - if you excuse the non-intentional double-entendre.
For the record. When I fly my drones, I not only make sure I comply with the Rules and Regulations. Where possible I inform people what I am about to do and ask if they have any objections, that is, if I fly my drone near them. Most people are more than interested in what I am doing = making documentaries about agriculture. What I seem to attract, is a kind of ‘Crowd-Flash’ group selfies waving from the ground wishing to be in my videos rendering certain aspects of video footage useless. I find it sweet that so many people wish to share not only in my enjoyment, but to learn more about how we all can document our lives through new means of making videos. During the course of my work, I have received endless invitations to come along to public events and private parties to take drone video.
I am a keen ornithologist and understand birds well. I have spent most of my life savings tending to injured birds and supporting animal sanctuaries for birds and animals too injured to return back to their natural habitat. I assure, that in my experience of birds - which is immense - as long as you do not interfere with a birds’ food sources, then they do not care if you flew a full-sized helicopter adjacent to their roost or nesting areas. I have Blue-tits who nest over the main entrance to my house. There could not be a noisier environment, yet every year they return and raise their fledglings. Latterly, my big problem has been with ‘Raptors’ - birds themselves. Specifically, Eagles ‘buzzing’ my smaller drone, probably thinking it to be a food source. Last month while I was filming an Eagle, my drone distracted the Eagle’s swoop onto a sparrow; and, in preference, chased my drone. Eagle = 0, Sparrow and Drone = lived.

I had some crazy lady give me a hard time about flying my drone while gathering aerial shots of my home town. Claimed I could be spying on people through their windows or something. I tried to logically explain that first off, my drone doesn't have that kind of camera at that altitude, and second, it makes a TON of noise. To get close enough to "spy" on people, it would be next to impossible since they would hear the thing buzzing right away. Unfortunately, like many people these days, logic didn't seem to click for her so I ended up telling her to eff off and mind her own business. Before stomping off in a huff, she claimed she was going to call the police, so I said go for it. I continued flying for another 10 minutes or so (until battery started getting low) and I left with no incident whatsoever.
I had the opportunity to meet a Karen this year when I filmed material for one of my city's politicians, who was to present a building proposal for a place owned by the municipality(Forest near an lake that they wanna create an park for people to walk around in)
This Karen thought I was not allowed to film this spot.
Since I was busy with my drone job, I left the discussion to the politician who were nearby and monitored my job.
Anyhow she left the area rather angry.
Thing is, she has to trust you on saying ‘my drone hasn’t got such a camera’. There are people around who have no clue how this all works. Henrik’s tips on staying polite, direct them to an official website etc might be a good solution.

I had a guy come and complain that I was "scaring the birds" when I was flying in my local park. He was pretty agressive walking up to me, but I am not a small man and he was so he got less aggressive as he got close and saw I could probably take care of myself and wasn't taking any of his crap. I told him I wasn't flying near trees, wasn't near any birds, and it was totally legal for me to fly where I was. After him whinging for a while, I determined he didn't care about birds at all he just didn't like the drone. He pointed at my car and asked if it was mine, I told him it was, and he can take all the photos he liked. His favorite expression was "we'll see about that!", he said it a lot.

As another viewer is mentioning, wearing a reflective vest with company name etc will in most cases turn the situation into a curiousity situation. Thats at least what I have experienced since taking my good ol´ "drone certificate" back in 2016 :) So far I havent had any bad encounters (knock on wood) as I try to make sure that people know where I am controlling the drone from, and also having the company name clearly shown. During my years with Missing People, we also had clearly marked vests to ensure that people knew who we were when searching in urban areas with drones, and that still applies for all current and new pilots ;)
Even if the company name was fake it would probably work. I watch a lot of "auditing" videos and it's amazing how many people accost a photographer and ask who they are working for. They don't seem to understand that someone could have a hobby in using a camera. The same with drones. Auditors who are flying a drone get questioned about who they are working for, typically being asked if they are working for the council. They seem to think that using a camera or drone is a regulated activity and therefore only companies or government bodies can use them. They have been programmed into thinking that they must let the state control their whole lives. That people actually have a freedom to take photographs or fly a drone is anathema and totally alien to them.
2 ways to solve this - either call the local authorities or print out ALL the rules and regulations on hard copies to show them.
Most layman knows no shit about drone laws and regulations as MOST of them have been misinformed as they will usually ASSUME as they think they are "EXPERTS" in this area.
The best way to approach them is to be in the most friendly manner with the biggest smile on your face (after you land your drone). Then make them look really stupid after that when you show them the CAA rules.
If they are still NOT convinced with the hardcopy you showed them, call the authorities (have the number ready) or police. Usually they will back off when you try calling the police as I have encountered a few times a year. Out of 100 people that approach me, 98 are pretty cool about it and asked me about how I learn to fly a drone or what brand I use.
So far I ONLY met 2 old ass donkeys that insisted I was flying in illegally air space. I had to call the police which they came after that. The police told them I have clearance to fly. The police then asked them if they know the rules and regulations of the drone laws and regulations? Which later they said they were assuming (their tone totally change) the place I was flying is illegal. Before the police came, they were shouting at me and asking me to stop flying. The police was a little piss off and told them off as they are wasting manpower as I was force to call them. They say this would not have happen if they checked first.
So before taking off ANYWHERE around the world, please double or triple check if you have clearance to fly. Let's make our drone community a friendlier place and try to stay calm and compose if you suddenly face with this kinda of situation.
Or tell them to phone the authorities themselves while saying “you know they won’t do anything”.
When people think about this realise they won’t get their desired results, they often back down.
I once had a lady saying she was going to phone the police because I was riding a bicycle! I told her “Go on then, I will wait here for them. Do you think the police will even turn up?”. She soon ended her confrontation.
Question: regarding flying over residential housing... There has to be some type of freedom in doing this because if you're flying at say 400 ft in the air and you're flying in town obviously going from point A to point B you are probably going to fly over residences at some point. (Talking in the United States right now) Aren't there exceptions when flying over residential areas if you are that high up? (At least with sub 250g drones?)
I'm a new subscriber love the video some people are so ignorant 🙄 and don't want to take the time to look up our drone regulations.....I flew camera drones for 3 years never had a problem....then started flying FPV ....a lot louder and that's when all the KAREN'S came out of nowhere!!!! I just ignore them and say if you don't like what I'm doing call the police.....police come I share my knowledge of rules and regulations then put my goggles on the police officer and he has a blast while I do powerloops and sit s's lmao sorry long message cheers
I have been a drone enthusiast for 3 years now; One guy approached me a couple summers ago. After I explained to him calmly that it is totally legal, and he kept going, I told him to fuck off and mind his own business or I was landing the drone and dropping him. He walked away.

I've been into RC planes for quite some time and never had any issues other than people wanting to watch an ask questions. Although I personally have never had an accident that damaged property or people, I also know that an RC plane or heli flying at a high rate of speed (or even slow) is MUCH more dangerous to come into contact with and have witnessed at least one guy that was flying a large gas plane (I think it was a Sig LT-40 or LT-70) in a local park where we only flew "park flyers" and lost control, hitting a house. Luckily there was no damage to the house or it's occupants, but his recklessness ended our flying in that park. To my knowledge, as of 2023, there has never been a death by a civilian drone, but many from RC planes and choppers.
I have a golf course like a mile from my house...i love flying over that and low. Watching golfers try and through stuff at my drone when I get near.
I woulda jumped in her car since she left the door open and running. Used the litchi app with follow me mode to video my get away.

People have no clue about rules; traffic, drones, street photography etc. - but lots of opinions. Tip: Carry the rules on a piece of paper that you can show people. I use a print out from the official page - with the official logo. At least it cuts the discussion short if people care to read.

I asked him the rules and where I could find the information that I couldn’t fly 50km of coastline in Perth Australia.
He left I got my picture happy days .
I am looking to buy a drone to make footage for my music videos, but I did not think about how to handle people during flights. This video is a good warning for people like me who only think about the romantic side of things. Thank you, oh and you handled Karen with respect, good job.

I already owe the Air 2 S . Is the image quality different between the Mini 3 and the Air 2 S? I am debating if I should get the Mini 3 for portability and also here in the US getting the 47 minutes battery . Or should I wait for the next drone ?
@@konggig no completly untrue! Mini 3 has 0.8 inch, air 2s 1inch. BUT Air 2s has 2.8 aperture and mini 3 1.7 so at the end the amount of light per pixel is pretty similar. For photography get the air 2s because of 20mp and better wind resistence. If you want sub 250g for regulation reasons get the autel nano plus or mini 3. Autel has better video quality especially low light / night. Mini 3 has vertical video and better tracking and is a little more agile / faster. I sold my air 2s and got a nano plus because the legal regulations for >250g drones suck and i shoot mostly video.
