  • Street cars were prominent in Pittsburgh as in most cities until the 1950's. When Port Authority of Allegheny county consolidated all the bus lines in 1963 one of the first things they did was kill the trolley system (maybe so GM could readly supply them with buses). Here is a pristine section of brick and rail that is still remaining near East Ohio St at the corner of Chestnut and Spring Garden Ave. You get a bonus by seeing the Abandoned and soon to be demolished Civic Arena, an engineering wonder from 1961. visit www.stuffthatsgone.com for all my videos.

Thanks for this video. The north side is my favorite part of Pittsburgh, being comprised of so many quaint row house neighborhoods. It really is the treasure of the city and was sacrificed for too many unsightly highways and Allegheny Center Mall.

1 Spring Graden turned right at 16th Street onto East Ohio Street, as did 5 Spring Hill, which shared the Chestnut Street trackage with 1 Spring Hill. 16th Street Bridge (Allegheny River) was used only by one route, 77/54 North Side-Carrick via Bloomfield. Likewise, 77/54 was the only route to use the Brady Street Bridge (Monongahela River), and was cut back to Seneca and Gist Streets in 1963 when reduced load limits on the Brady Street Bridge precluded streetcar operations over it.

The spring garden line made a right turn and headed towards Allegheny Center. There was a route that crossed the 16th street bridge. And here another fun little fact. that intersection was a four way interchange for the streetcar system as a route went up Route 28 but was removed when 28 was widen to four lanes by PennDOT.

I remember in 1963 crossing trolley tracks in Ballard on 28 NW. Many still remain under asphalt still in the brick streets, turnouts and all in old Seattle..

Yes, I agree. I moved away from Pittsburgh in 1983. It was already pretty nasty then. I can see what it's like now, form these videos, etc. But, you know ---- It's all cities, not just Pittsburgh. We have no more blue-collar, working-class jobs here in this country, due to these companies taking their shops overseas, because they don't have to pay union - level wages over there.
The North Side has always been about blue-collar and working-class.

It's either welfare class, or snowflake class. I'm trying to leave town next month. I'll either end up in Meadville, or Kitchener.

The worst part is that Transit Operations replaced the streetcar lines with buses

And when gas goes to $5 or $6 a gallon, watch the trolleys start to come back again!
Great video... we also have some lovely preserved areas of Streetcar line here in Minnesota (search "Minnesota Streetcar Museum")!
I should post a video as a response to this one, on the old Selby Tunnel you can still see the portal of in St Paul.

Ha, yeah, Allegheny Center Eyesore. Now shit, just like Eastland Mall, etc. My brother's first wife was from Spring Hill, we were over there all the time, anat. I just went home for christmas, man, what a mess. The Rox is so damn depressing it's hard to believe I lived there. Northside, Southside, Carrick, Baum Blvd, all look like shit, man. Damn shame. (anat)

Damn shame what they did to the Burgh, all in the name of "progress"... Bah! Progress my ass! I saw the circus in the Civic Arena as a kid, and many concerts there as a teenager (Rush, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, to name just a few) I also saw a good many in the Stanley Theater, and Three Rivers as well. I rode them Shannon/Library streetcars tripping balls on microdot, and you could feel the ride really good all the way in the back, and the windows opened, so you could smoke. Thanx.
