From the 1970 album " Mad Dogs and Englishmen", this is a remake of The Boxtops 1967 Number 1 hit, delivered with Joe's gritty soulful rendition, with multiple contributions from Leon Russell. A heartfelt and poignant ballad, with each line steeped with raw emotion and Joe's breathing new life into the lyrics. With Chris Stainton on piano, Rita Coolidge on backing vocals, Bobby Keys and Jim Price, ( Rolling Stones horn section), and Carl Radle and Jim Gordon, who became members of Eric Clapton's Derek and the Domino's, the instrumentation is absolutely top notch. One of Joe's greatest vocal performances. 🎹🎹🎸🎸🥁🥁 Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Jami. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Leon Russell actually put the band together in like a week and was the musical director of the tour. The name was taken from a 1931 Noel Coward song of the same name and Leon's song Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Leon also contributed songs Delta Lady, Superstar, and Give Peace A Chance.
There is no one like Joe Cocker! Have loved his performances since the mid 60’s, loved how deep he got into the song & the band is fantastic! The Boxtops did this song in ‘67 & had a #1 Hit 💥☮️
So glad we, husband and I, got to see Joe live at Lakewood Amp in Atlanta, GA in the 90s. It was great. It rained some and he never acknowledged it, and neither did the crowd. 😂😊
I am so glad I got to see this man live several times. He just got better and better as the years went on. Thanks for the reaction. Now off to the old albums.
Mad Dogs and Englishmen, a truly classic tour with Joe and a host of great musicians! A lot of them had been on the Delaney and Bonnie and Friends tour before this one and then jumped into Derek and the Dominos and George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh. It was basically a three year party!!
I remember going into NYC with my girlfriend to see the Mad Dogs & Englishmen movie. We dropped acid on the train in and peaked during the movie. Unforgettable performance
It's an all-star band. This was Joe's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. The band actually had 3 drummers if I remember correctly, although they only had 2 on full kits here and the other on percussion. I think the dominant drummer was Jim Gordon, a former first call session musician. Jim was on a ton of songs, and then he became a founding member of Derek and the Dominos. He was a great drummer that played perfect fills. He could play with power and finesse at the same time. RIP
It's fun to listen to these songs with you. These were songs I hadn't listened to for twenty or thirties year. It is nice to reconsider them. And earphones are good. TY for the video.
I would love you to listen to the Dells song "Stay in my corner" listen to how they harmonized, the horns and at about 4:50, Tell me how he held that note so long !!!❤❤ This is my favorite group, 5 of them and they will touch your soul !! ❤❤❤
Joe has not been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame because he never had any originals - This was originally a hit by The Box Tops in 1967. Joe deserved a place in the hall of fame though. He could really belt out a song. Also his jerky movements were because he did not play an instrument and it was his way of feeling like he was.
Hey, that ;piano you're hearing is the great Leon Russell. AND if you like this song, check out the DVD of Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour..... The band is awesome and has two drummers to keep everybody moving . You've got to see Joe Cocker live to really appreciate him....
Harri, in this live version, on the piano was the great Leon Russell. Also, you were right, this is a cover song. The original is from The Box Tops. By the way, this version you just reacted, you can find the video in this platform.
Who sang the original song The Letter? Chilton was only 16 "The Letter" is a song written by Wayne Carson that was first recorded by the American rock band the Box Tops in 1967. It was the group's first and most successful single, reaching number one on the record charts in the United States and Canada.
Hey Harri .Joe killed it right? The original was done by The Box Tops. It's very different from Joe's version, but definitely worth a listen. Enjoyed your reaction. Peace.
Back in the 60s Joe made beautiful covers of Dylan’s I shall be released & Just like a woman. His voice was never the same after this Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. He made another beautiful Dylan cover in the 70s though ~ Catfish, a song I’ve never heard anyone else including Dylan sing ~
Very true. The tour exhausted him & disillusioned him. He fell into depression & the alcohol & substance abuse damaged his voice. He rallied later in his career but his sublime voice was never the same!
harri you got to watch Susan T. singing this song the band playing this cover in there set lists czcams.com/video/3r_3UziG6Ak/video.htmlsi=Zqm4IeVZzR-d41SF
I think the closest they came was band member Crystal Taliefero, who played for both. Lol. Billy has been trying to get Joe in the Hall of Fame for years to no avail.
Keyboards by the great Leon Russel on this song.
Love me some Joe Cocker live. The Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour . . . .Cry Me A River.
Never will another like him. RIP Joe.
Yes sir
Cover of The Box Tops hit
Joe cocker did mostly covers
And rocked all of them
He didn't just do covers. He stole them, filed off the serial numbers, and claimed them as his own!

Joe and Leon were a great team ✌️
Bobby Keys on saxophone. May he rest in peace.
N'oubliez Jamais.......a great one bu Joe.
There are live versions of this. My all-time favorite entertainer. I bought this item twice.
AH HELL ,EVEN THE TAMBORINE WAS HITTIN IT.!!!
“Cry me a River” that he does from this same concert is fantastic.
The original was only about two minutes. Cocker and his musicians absolutely took this song into another dimension. that whole album is great.
One of a kind and one of the best.

Met Joe in his sober years, pure class gentleman.
A cover, but the definitive version!

Excellent Joe Cocker submission from the landmark album "Mad Dogs and Englishmen." Well done Jami and Harri!
The Fillmore East “Mad Dogs and Englishman” concert is my favorite of all time. So much talent on that stage with Joe in the lead.
the Boxtops did the original, and I believe you reacted to it not long ago.
I suggest that you watch the movie “Mad Dogs and Englishmen”.
What great talent!💕
This was a very nice submission and performance by the incomparable Joe Cocker. Harri, I enjoyed your review.
Great artist
I forgot about this version! Sooo eff awesome! Thank you, my bestie.
He absolutely burned up the stage at Woodstock. Very passionate singer with a totally unmistakeable voice.

Amazing performance, incredible collection of talent on 1 stage. If only I could have experienced it in person ❤
I remember going into NYC with my girlfriend to see the Mad Dogs & Englishmen movie. We dropped acid on the train in and peaked during the movie. Unforgettable performance
Leon Russell on piano. Mad Dogs and Englishmen was the greatest.

Jim Gordon also plays the drums on Traffic's The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys . Incredible legendary drummer.
I always thought it would be great to hear Joe and Ray Charles do this song...
he said at the end of the song. Natalie Cole. So, she was a background singer.
It's fun to listen to these songs with you. These were songs I hadn't listened to for twenty or thirties year. It is nice to reconsider them. And earphones are good. TY for the video.
What a band they had. Assembled by Leon Russell, who's fabulous on this album.
Leon Russell was the piano and arranger of thid version
I would love you to listen to the Dells song "Stay in my corner" listen to how they harmonized, the horns and at about 4:50, Tell me how he held that note so long !!!❤❤

Pure 🔥period !
A group called The Arbors did a very, very different cover version of this song in the Sixties that's well worth listening to.
Great reaction Harri. Good to know you're still out there. Take care. 😊
A fantastic cover of the Boxtops hit. Thanks Harri and Jami 🌺✌️
Wish you had the live video to get the full Joe Cocker experience.
The Box Tops,I believe in the mid to late 60s
Joe has not been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame because he never had any originals - This was originally a hit by The Box Tops in 1967. Joe deserved a place in the hall of fame though. He could really belt out a song. Also his jerky movements were because he did not play an instrument and it was his way of feeling like he was.
Yet in 86 Elvis got inducted Go figure.
But they can induct Dolly Parton, who never sang a rock song in her career.
This is from The Mad Dogs and Englishmen movie. His voice was never the same after this tour in 1970.

This is a cover of the 1967 song by The Boxtops
Great cover of the Box Tops hit
Originally recorded by the Box Tops Joe covered it and turned it into the song it was meant to be.......Great choice!
Leon Russel on piano?
The one & only Leon - Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour
Love his version of Bye Bye Blackbird
Harri, in this live version, on the piano was the great Leon Russell. Also, you were right, this is a cover song. The original is from The Box Tops. By the way, this version you just reacted, you can find the video in this platform.
Thank you, I kept reading these comments and not one mention of the late great Leon Russell. Leon was the one that put the whole band together.
Who sang the original song The Letter? Chilton was only 16

Great album! 1970, I think.
Not many white guys can do soul like this. I can only think of one other, and he is Paul Rodgers
Joe Cocker maybe the best singer ever!
the original song was done by the Box Tops. different tempo.

One of those that the cover is better than the original ?
Just different 🤔 Love both versions 🤩❤️🌟
I've always thought that his cover of She Came In Through The Bathroom Window was better than the Beatles version. And I'm a huge Beatles fan.
It's so strange or what to say, some singers voice feels physicly in the chest hart
. Cockers are one of them for me. I don't even super listning.
czcams.com/video/Z32hYFKFvcQ/video.html the live version
The Tedeschi-Trucks Band does a Killer Version of this song ...... Just sayin' . Carry On .
