- I am finally comparing two popular lines of affordable drugstore curly hair products that are humidity-resistant for frizz-free results, CANTU VS SHEA MOISTURE. This video is a first impression UNBIASED product review of several products from both lines styled on my curls at the same time to determine the longevity, pros, and cons of each brand in a true side-by-side compHAIRison. I reviewed many products (hence the length of this video) and keep you updated on how it lasts throughout the week and ultimately, which products I recommend.. and which ones I don't. So stay tuned to the end! Thanks for watching!

I would love to see a video on drugstore products that are not advertised for curls, but work really well for them. Here in Europe, we don't have much choice
I hear that!! I have a video on this topic planned 😍
Same in Singapore :/
@@ManesByMell i heard you can use lube as a styler?? and its cgm friendly
Good request
@@ManesByMell could you do something like an "international hair care" series where you use famous products from every continent? Because its really hard to find curly haircare products in other places
"cantu do it? yes shea can!" LMAO i love her!
I know right?! Love her so much! Its so cheesy but she makes it funny.
I really felt like I did something there LOL thanks for acknowledging my poor pun 🤪

It is drugstore now but, yeah, it ain't cheap, Hunny.
shea moisture is one of the only curly hair brands i have available where i live.

Thank you, thank you! I’m starting my transition! Little worried since I’m 55, wondering how the world will accept my curls, but excited nonetheless. (I’ve been straightening my hair for 25 plus years). Wish me luck!
All the best!
@Mona Carriedo - Hi Mona! I'm 65 in Sept and I'm trying to get a handle on this curly girl thing. I'm probably more of a wavy but the underneath side of my hair might have some 3A going on. My hair was very curly as a child and thru high school. I got perms in college and 20's to help me control my hair better. I think my hair changed a lot from pregnancies and anesthesia. Then keeping it shorter and straightening it all thru my 40's & 50's for work Now I just want my old hair back! lol I've been growing it out for almost 2 years so the length is down a good ways past my shoulders and it is quite thick and coarse. I have a lot of wave. My husband loves it compared to my short styles of so many years. I'm just starting my journey and trying not to spend an arm and a leg on too many products. But I really don't know what I'm doing at this point! lol
@Mona Carriedo I'm in my 60s starting curly girl method. My hair is on wavy side and what really helps for me is using clarifying shampoo couple times a month and to use a deep conditioner just as often. Another thing that helps is that I have stopped coloring my hair. I don't miss those regular root touch ups.
@@rachelc.5463 I'm 65 and have been coloring my hair for 20+,years. I've been debating on whether to stop the coloring but I'm concerned it'll look horrible. My hair is wavy/curly and very fine. Finding products that won't weigh it down is a challenge, from leave-in to stylers.
Girl you got this! You will be SO happy you did. Embracing your natural texture is sooooo satisfying. ALSO props to you! Not many people switch it up after doing something for 25 years! Way to take charge of your life and keep an open mind.
I’m in my LATE 30’s and my hair changed texture after puberty. I JUST realized I have been taking care of my curls all wrong. You make it so easy to learn how to take care of them. Thank you!
Who else forgot that today was Tuesday? I literally got the notification, and i was like wuuuhhh for a second and then i was like ooohhhhhhh.
Quarantine got days all wack 😜
I could never forget! My favourite day of the week 😍
@@ManesByMell haha. I love Texture Tuesday too (all because of you). I think I forgot because of memorial day lol.
Yea Memorial Day got us all confused 😆

Thank you for being here, I am go grateful!! ❤️❤️❤️
The Shea moisture made your hair look more defined to me in the end
I agree. I saw some looser curl strands on the Cantu side lol
yea i actually think the shea moisture looked better and mored defined and volumious
I agree too , looks better to me
yup honestly both looked good but I liked the shea side better!

Your hair is a like a garden , your scalp is the soil - Madam CJ Walker, the og of natural hair care . cant have gorgeous hair without a healthy scalp
Period that’s what I’m doing rn 😂
I work at a store that sells Cantu and I don't think I've ever seen it that runny. Either that was a bad batch or it was left in a high heat area for too long where some ingredients just melted. But I will say it shouldn't be that liquidy.
You are right about it being a bad batch. When I get it it does have a custard-y texture. Not at all as what is in the video. It's a great product.
I used cantu leaving in conditioner and I must it's bad it destroyed my natural hair
Lol thats because there many different types for different black hair types 😉 so because these where made for black people which she fail to mention you all seem a little confused!
@@niquelove2074The reason they do not work the bes is not cause their for ‘black hair’ it’s cause their relatively cheap hence why there are from a drug store.I’m black myself and while Cantu works it does not last for long nor is it the best product for black hair or most curly hair in general.
Please stop with these comments they are literally so embarrassing-
@@niquelove2074Also cantu is somewhat controversial amongst people due to how their curl activators make their hair dry.
I’m still getting used to my chemo curls but your videos have 100% helped me! Hubby doesn’t even have to look in the Amazon package to know it’s hair products now 😂 I’d love a video about creating extra volume (and keeping it!)
Congrats on your recovery love! ✨✨👑
Ok
One of my hidden gems from Cantu is the Curling Cream from the Cantu Care for Kids line. It rivals my curling smoothie from Shea Moisture, it's just that good! Gives me enough definition while keeping my hair soft to the touch and it keeps that hold for many days. The best thing is: it's only about $3-4! Definitely give it a try if you can find it👍
As a curly girlie and a stem girlie I love when Mel talks about ingredients bc Im using EDTA in my hair and my lab rn just VERY different concentrations

The define and shine custard I use from Cantu is never that liquidy and I like to use it in my winter routine because it has less hold. I use the Stay Glue Gel in the summer because it's great for the hot humid air we get here down in Houston, Texas. Also you have to warm the Stay glue gel in your hands to get it to a easier to maneuver consistency. Loved your review 🤗
Marlen Guzman I totally agree I swear by the Cantu Custard and mine is never that liquidy
Hey! I'm on the Texas coast too. I like the Cantu leave in conditioners that I've tried. I'll see about checking out the glue
I love the custard and it is usually a gel consistency. Maybe there was something wrong with that jar.
I agree, I think there was something wrong with that particular tub of custard.
That's pretty weird. I bought it for myself the other day and it was that liquidy. Maybe they recently changed the formula?
thank god CZcams showed me your channel!!! Ive had wavy hair my whole life but never knew how to style it and make them more defined now I'm gonna have some bomb ass waves

Mell: Cantu do it? Yes, Shea can!
The Cantu Curl activator cream is my holy grail. My hair is very similar in texture and type to yours, and the curl activator is just a little too heavy for my hair, but ive found that watering it down just a bit makes it absolutely perfect!
I feel the same way. The activator cream is too heavy. I put it under the gel. And it made my curls so soft, they dissapeared :/
i would love to see garnier products and maui moisture 👏🏽
I love a lot of the Garnier products. The Maui products not so much. The only Maui products I do love I can't find in stores anymore. It's the vanilla scented shampoo and conditioner.
They dry my hair out but maybe that’s just me .
Ok , I was literally laughing out loud during this video! But these product reviews are what I need right now. I’m a new curly girl and still learning.

I would love to hear your thoughts on Maui moisture!
When her 4 days of hair shed is my day 1 after a wash 😭😭😭
Cantu's Curl Activator Leave-In has been excellent for getting more curl in my hair. I used to be 3B, but certain *ahem* controversial curly company products moved it to 3A, and in some places 2C. I've been wanting to try the hair glue, because I live in a humid climate, but I can't find it locally.

Manes by Mell try out the newest Shea Moisture Coconut Custard line... smells like heaven. The containers have golden yellow caps. The curl cream is great (in a tube) and the gel oil (in a jar) are on point!!

I still don’t trust Cantu, it’s made my hair really dry in the past when I used it for a long period of time, and the same thing has happened to a lot of people I know 🤷🏽♀️ love Shea moisture though
Cantu and I are not on Speaking terms!
Agree. Just stopped using a cantu leave-in I was trying out because it was drying out my hair.
really? Cantu has helped my hair grow and stay moisturize since i've been using it on my natural hair journey, It's shows my curls very well but maybe everyone's hair is different truly sorry that happen to you
It may be because you use so much moisture in your hair that you need protein to balance it out, try applying one egg for about 5-7 hours or leave it in for better results & wash it out
I wonder if it’s the alcohol and fragrance in it that causes the drying? I’ve been using it (because it’s all I had at home) but finally read the ingredients today and fragrance is pretty high on the list.
Can we all appreciate her singing at the end!? Lol ❤️
Thank you thank you so much! It was so helpful. I'm on a new more natural curly hair journey. I've always loved my curls, but I think my styling had too much crunch plus flakes from hairspray. I've watched every single one of your videos! I needed this one to complete the missing piece.
Ooh You can try Not your mother's Curl Talk line!
Yes!!! I've already tried a lot of Shea and Cantu, but not NYM yet. I want to hear her take before I try it!
I just tried I didnt not like I like cantu better
@@daylilopez6350 Yeah i am trying it out too. Its making my hair dry and shedding alot too! 🙁

I love nym! The curl talk mask is my favorite!!
UGHHHH THAT CURLY ENHANCING SMOOTHIE IS EVERYTHING
Is it really good ? How about for frizz?
@@coolkoala19 I feel like you either love or hate it. My hair can’t take coconut so it left it very dry yet greasy, others love this product tho. If your hair is fine it might be too thick & heavy
For those saying that Mell’s Sheamoisture gel shouldn’t be that consistency, many of Sheamoistures products have changed formulas. My holy grail hair cream was Sheamoisture Coconut Hibiscus but the formula has changed for the worse in my opinion. Just an FYI for those who don’t know about the reformulation of some of their products.
all the Shea Moisture gels I've seen on the shelf look like jello
Yeah, as some ingredients became difficult to get, they had to be reformulate
Commenting on this 3 years later, but I used the Moisture Retention (goldish yellow one) and then switched to Coconut and hibiscus line after finding them super cheap at Marshall’s and it RUINED my hair. Roots were oily, ends were dry, protein overload.. horrible. So I totally feel you. If you google or CZcams Shea moisture formula change we’re not the only ones who got annoyed with formula change. Ugh. Used it for yearsssss
Just found this channel and you’re SO funny! I love how thorough you are with this review!

April Day I dont know if you only use clean products but only shampoo, conditioner and gel are clean of that line.
Elyahnn_ What do you mean by clean products?
Booyah dont know either bruv 😭
Idk why so many curly girls don’t like Cantu 🙁 I personally love it, it was the first brand I used when I started transitioning. I even got my mom and boyfriend to use it on their curly hair. Both brands have some amazing gems. The Shea deep conditioners you mentioned are bomb!
I want to like it so bad. But it made my hair horribly dry to the point it was breaking off.
I liked Cantu, but their ingredients are not friendly to those of us who have nut allergies.
People lump the regular line the naturals line. And because some people have problems with the regular line they believe the naturals Line will also be bad
I wanted to like Cantu, because it is so much more affordable, then all the other stuff i now use. But i had a so horribly itching and hurting sculp almost a burning sensation after using the custard, that i just threw it away. My quess, something in it caused an allergic reaction. I haven't tried anything else from cantu since, since i am not too keen on the smell anyway.
I think it depends on which products you use! No brand has only good products. I have tried Cantu and my results were meh. I dont have anything against them I just have other brands i enjoy more! I really like Shea Moisture though.
These results were really impressive, I was not expecting Cantu to do so well. Thanks Mel for showing us the curl ways 💖
I think Mel's hair is just so dang healthy that any product will look nice in it
@@jahfari203 and cantu will make it not so healthy because of all the harmful ingredients
@@valorous4849 good to know since I use some Cantu products. What products do you suggest that can be found in a drugstore at a reasonable price?
This video is SO helpful. I'd love to see more like it! I'm about 2-3 months in and still trying to figure out what my hair likes/dislikes, but the ingredients take so much time to remember or decipher when standing in the aisle for 20 minutes or trying to compare with 10 tabs open on the computer. So I really appreciate hearing that someone is either protein heavy or if a product tries to pull a fast one (like the mineral oil to patroleum in this video).
finally a product I can actually afford !!!!

Hey Mell, could you possibly do a video on products that would be great for curlies that have fine wavy/curly hair? I have such a frustrating time trying to find good products that won't weigh down my hair. 😊
Yes! I have fine, thick, curly hair and NOTHING works for me past day 2. I’ve tried curlsmith, devacurl, ouidad, shea, cantuu...help! It’s expensive and my hair is damaged and dry as it is!
@@cindymarquina4878 Cantu and Devacurl are horrible. You can try Hask or As I Am. They're great!
@@cindymarquina4878 you may find that nothing works because you have hard water mineral buildup. you could go to sallys and get the ion hard water shampoo for less than $10 or find another chelating shampoo. fine hair accumulates minerals more quickly because it has more surface area.
Love ya Mell. You have inspired me to just let my curls do their thing.. I use to love to straighten my hair but girl you make me love my curls..
Have long hair day ok that all that all that all👐👐👏👋🎺🎷🎻
The gel or oil thing probably solidified more than it should’ve because of the temperature, kinda similar to the way coconut oil acts. Which is probs why when you rubbed it in your hands it got warmer and melted.
Well I never would have thought of that
that’s the second one I’ve seen like that and it always confuses me because the one I had wasn’t like that
Yeah it's not support to be like that, it should be more watery.
Yes. I moved from Texas to Alaska and I've noticed a lot of products are completely different consistencies here than they were in a hotter climate. I've had to change my routine some.

Love this review! These are the main two styling brands I come back to when I am trying more expensive products ( like Curlsmith and Deva Curl). I always thought Shea Butter was maybe better, but this was an eye opener! Also, I wish my curls lasted 4 days, but no such luck down here in Houston, TX...
Have you done a review on Kinky Curly? I know it is "in between" high end products and drugstore products in terms of price point, but I find that I am LOVING the custard. I am SO glad you did this video. I have fallen in love with Cantu. Everyone talks about Sheamoisture and their mosques are amazing but I haven't found other products from them that work for me. Then I tried Cantu and now my bathroom looks like a Cantu sponsor video. If you try more stuff from them I recommend trying their gel with honey. It's so nice. It's not the usual texture. It's a bit between a gelee and custard but is still stronger hold gel. Also I have tried a lot of the kids line and they work fantastic in my hair. :)
Also, I have a gel recommendation: Got2B Ultra Strength(the one in the black tube). It's SO good. I can't even scrunch out the crunch. In Houston humidity it's a life saver!
Hands down the number one you tuber in my opinion. So funny, smart, and inclusive as possible. Congrats on Sephora squad! Much love from London UK
I live in South Korea and boy oh boy finding curly hair friendly stuff. I decided to start looking after my curls properly to grow them out (they're not too picky while short but there's a reason I cut my hair...). I spent the last few days researching stuff and finally managed to get a decent list of products to try and find. They're not advertised for curly hair but hey, I can't be picky!
That Cantu Custard was SPOILED! The color & consistency of your product is 100% wrong: it is usually a jelly consistency and a more tan color. Very similar to the Shea Moisture gel in appearance, in fact.
Really? Because mine is exactly the same as Mel's and I've heard others having the same. This isn't a cheap product to be throwing all that away 😕
Yes! That’s how mine are. When I saw hers I was so confused. Cause mine is very jelly gel like
I've never had the custard be watery like that. The right consistency is like jelly.
Just want to say I love watching all your videos! Unfortunately can't use either of these brands as they are to heavy form my fine thin hair.

The Cantu custard isn't supposed to be that liquidy. I had it and it was more jelly like. The Shea Moisture gel souffle isn't supposed to be that hard but another CZcamsr got a hard one too (Swavy Curly Courtney). It's supposed to be more soft and custardy. I don't know if they have changed it or if it has gone bad or if they had a bad batch.
I agree, my Shea Moisture gel is goopy not hard.
They changed the formula of the gel souffle a while back to the point it's basically impossible to use now. It really is a solid block of jello now.
I agree, mine was a different texture too 🤔
Shea moisture changed their formula on a lot of their products. Kind of disappointing because they changed their great formulas into something basic
@@funkmastersamantha i got rid of a brand new container bc it was legit jello. my other container is from a different store and it is the right texture which is odd but overall i personally think its a bad product

I love how thorough this review is. Love it! Your energy😍
Awesome video! I’ll be buying some of these products soon! Thank you for making this video! Also- Dove came out with a complete curly hair product line . Maybe a review? It’s available at Walmart
The Shea moisture soufflé is definitely a liquid syrup type of feeling. Super weird when I saw it so thick 🥺
Love this! Just moved to a really high humidity climate and didn't know what products would work and this is great to see what I should try
i've been waiting for this battle since day one finaaalllyyy
I Wii take a cat OK
This was the sign I needed to buy those Cantu products in my basket
I use the sufflé but has never recieved it with that texture. It’s supposed to be a more sticky syrup
Mine looked just like hers it was nasty
yeah mine’s like sticky syrup so I was really confused... I have to be very careful how I put it because later on I can’t scrunch it out, my hair is sticky and it’s really annoying as I can only fix it by washing it. any advice how I can fix this? My hair is not fine but medium curly/wavy. I use it along with cantu curling cream which I put before the gel.
Kristine Hietpas Same I don’t know even know how to use it
The suffle has corn syrup in it. I read the ingredients again after my hair seemed like i poured maple syrup in it :-/
The new version is like she showed. It was a mess to work with for me 😭
These are some of the only products we get in South Africa, thank you so much for reviewing! The CANTU range is a favourite, the curl activator is magical 🤩 any news on Palmers in the pipeline? Keep up the good work! And Thank you for your videos!
I just found your channel today and have binge watched several of your videos. You have great tips and you are hilarious as well! I love Cantu!
I was anxiously waiting for this video and refreshing my youtube for the last hour.
I have tried both brands and SheaMoisture doesn't work for me, I only use the "Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Souffle".
When it comes to cantu my hair loves the classic line, the natural line is ok but not amazing. I only like the"'curl activator cream".
Can you do ogx vs Maui battle?
Love your videos and can't wait for the next video!!!
YESSSS TEXTURE TUESDAY!!!!! I loved the ending !!!! You singing was everything !!! Even my seester started to sing 😂😂😂.
LOL I’m working on getting a record label, if you know anyone just send them that clip 🤪🤪
I've just discovered your channel and after years of Yuko straightening my mane, I am all for trying to love my natural curls again. * have ordered aveda products and some cantu and that brush 🤞🏼💕
love this kind of videos, thank you for your time and energy on all of your videos!
Not your mothers Curl talk line!!
Would love for you to review those
omg girl no that souffle should NOT be hard like that! It's supposed to be a thick, runny consistency.
It never looked like that for me, it was more on the runny side
Yea but it's always been thick
I bought it recently and looks the same. Thought it was so weird and hated the smell. Only tried it twice but considering trying it again since I’m still in quarantine...
Mines way thinner and I hate it. It like flash drys my hair and make it feel horrible.
Mine is also runnier and the first ingredient is Glycerin, on their website is another ingredient list than I have on my pot. There are two formulas and I don't get it. Why is this so? Horrible even when I only dip my finger in and use a tiiiiny little bit of this.
The review is so much more helpful because Mell includes a few days after the initial drying of her hair, because sometimes products look great in our hair at first, but look bad by the second day. I liked the Cantu side because the hair looked softer and more natural, as though it would move nice and feel nice. The Shea side look a bit crispy at first. Although I'd be interested to see a follow up review experimenting with applying different amounts to see what is the optimal amount for each product, and how this affects our comparisons between them. Good job Mell! I enjoy how you are are intelligent, cute, and funny!
Also I would be curious to see the results of the products individually in addition to combined. Then one could mix and match their 'effects'. :D
I don’t even have curly hair but you’re so entertaining ! 😂
Thank god!! Lord knows my cheap ass cant afford those expensive hair products.😂😂
Cantu isn’t expensive but Shea Moisture is a little more expensive. These are the some of the best affordable options for good hair products.
@@siggiesmalls2358 literally a 6 0z product from shea moisture is $11.99 And cantu leave in is $5.99 and is basically a 3 in 1 !! cantu all the way
I’ve used the Shea Moisture soufflé before and it’s not supposed to look like that! I didn’t even realize what you were using until you said that. It’s supposed to be a gloopy type of gel. Lol anyway, love the videos!
My gel soufflé was like that also...the one mel has.
Same! Mine was gloopy as well!
Yeah, mine is much more runny and easy to use. I really like it
I’ve bought the SM Gel several times I think Mel’s was dried out. What I’ve purchased was not as solid.
I've bought one that was like jello but I've also gotten one that was more runny. I didn't know which was the correct texture lol
Holy information!!! Yaaaassss Girl!!!! I’m all about the details and you delivered!!!! Thank you and Amanda so much!!!!! ❤️❤️
I like Cantu as a brand. I use Cantu Shea Butter conditioner, Comeback Curl spray, and Wave Whip curling mousse. ☺
