      Humans existed for a looooooong time - millennia - without shampoo or soap. Some still do and without skin conditions. Grooming is still a thing. Animals still exist in the wild with beautiful coats and no shampoo. Your house cat will have a beautiful glossy coat if you feed her correctly, not because you shampoo her.

      @@sarahrosen4985that is true but for most people it wouldnt be worth it going through the "no poo" phase where you just let your hair get oily and dirty then hope for the best.
      it might work for a few, but for most it would just be a safer bet using shampoo since theres nothing wrong with it in the first place if you use it correctly.

      @@sarahrosen4985We also existed without medicine, houses, decontaminated living areas, hand washing before surgery, etc. The creation of these haircare measures is proof of their demand, not the other way around. Clearly the "au naturel" way of haircare doesn't work for everyone, and definitely not enough people to stand the test of time. If you think you're smarter than several thousand dermatologists and trichologists working together to understand the human body and health measures necessary to take care of skin & hair; then you've clearly underestimated its complexity and overestimated your own knowledge.

    I destroyed my hair while going curly girl. If your hair is beautiful with sulfates/silicones, please don't change it. My hair went from 3a/3b, curling from root, bright and medium to thick to a dry mess, 2b/2c/3a, fine/thinned and shedding like crazy in the 7 years I was curly girl.
    Long story short, I was dianosed with alopecia androgenetic, but didn't accept it. I realized some things about my routine and finally understood it was the curly girl all together.

I know the reason why people with thick or tight curly hair do this is so their hair doesn’t tangle when letting the deep conditioner sit. Wouldn’t recommend it for lose curls or people who don’t have lots of hair but if you feel like your hairs to much to handle I would recommend braiding twisting or just sectioning the hair with clips to deep condition while letting it sit

As a permed curly, I do implement a lot of your tips and have found that since doing so, my curls last way longer than they used to! I go 4 months between perms, that is when there is just too much grow out and only the bottom half of my hair will still be wavy…well, actually, now I can still get a good curl at that point! I am sooo happy there is going to be more of a product focus on hair type…I have fine, low density, high porosity hair and really have to be careful what I use because it can weigh my hair down something awful! My favourite additions to my routine because of you are my perfect hair towel and the Ouidad lightweight gel. Fabulous! I also now use a leave in conditioner on my ends and sometimes start my styling with a bit of Ouidad styling cream. Gotta have crunch if I want the style to last though! I started getting perms 35 years ago (yeah…I’m old!) and did that in combination with *shudder* Sun In to be blonde! How do I still have hair?? She tried to tell me it was my hormones and I almost believed her. Thank you for posting about this because since I stopped going to that hair dresser and found a curly hair specialist, and I started my curly hair journey thanks to your videos, I’m falling in love with my curls again!! You have been an inspiration and I look forward to continue to watch all your content! Every time I get a compliment on my curls I tell them about your channel. So keep them coming 😊❤ Thanks so much!!

    I'm trying to stop straightening my hair and love my curls, so I've been watching a lot of these videos. It's hard when you've doing so for over 10 years and feel ugly with curly hair. I always see curly hair routines and think woah they're so lucky to have beautiful curls unlike mine. I saw your childhood pictures and started crying, your hair is similar to mine. It's the first time I ACTUALLY want to drop the heat, get a fresh cut and learn to style and love my natural hair. I understood that my hair is simply damaged and my curls just need some love and styling. Thank you so much Mell, may God bless you, and I hope I'll find the right products and have healthy looking curls soon.

    I'm so glad I caught what you said about thinning shears! A temporary hair dresser (my normal one was busy) did that to me without asking once. I suddenly heard that distinct loud chopping noise, and I was so upset, I froze. I knew it messed my hair up from previous experiences as a kid. And it takes so long to grow it back 😞 (3b hair). It's so validating to hear someone finally explain why it's not good to do. When straight hair people try to tell me what they think my hair needs, it is so frustrating when I don't know how to properly explain why they are wrong. CZcams has been a huge help.

    You've inspired me to try one last time to get my wave pattern to show through. My hair has always been (since puberty) fine/frizzy/wavy and it has never looked very good with the curly girl method. The one time it looked amazing was when I used the VO5 vivacious curls that has long since been discontinued. If this doesn't work I'm getting a digital perm so I don't have to deal with tedious heat styling or a frizzy, limp, lifeless mess. 🤞🏽

    It would be great if you could do a video like this but for natural/transitioning gray. Besides cutting it off, how can we properly treat the good new hair and the old over-treated hair. Really, just anything that applies to natural gray curly hair. Wouldn't ask except you make a lot of sense 😁

    • @Silverhaired59
      @Silverhaired59 Před rokem +5

      I agree we need more gray info. I had never dyed my hair, was trying to get curls with the CGM for 2.5 years when I did a favor to help a young guy finish cosmetology school during COVID. He wanted to treat me to a whole hair makeover and I let him use permanent color to add some lowlights that also made my remaining brown hair more gray. He used semi permanent violet color and silver color. My own white hair provided the highlights. He cut it and blew it out and curled it.
      I learned a couple of things. No matter what, my natural curls (2B, 2C) provide long lasting curls compared to even professional heat curls. My heat curls did not last the day. My own curls will still be able to be refreshed on day 3, and will be waves until I shampoo somewhere in days 4 - 7. So, don’t fight my curls!
      He said my hair was coarse, because it was gray/white. He gave me some conditioner for softening gray hair. It does not help me with curls, so I save it for when I might just blow dry straight.
      My hair hardly took any of the violet color. Now I know I can’t get colorful hair with semi-permanent dye. If I want a candy color, I will need to use colored conditioner that comes off on your clothes. My permanent dyed hair lost much of its curl for several months, so if I want curls and waves, no color for me.
      Mell, does this make sense to you? My biggest question is if my white/gray hair is likely to be coarse? I have always had frizzy, fly-away hair that weighed nothing. Now, I just have less of it, but it is white. Using methods like in today’s video, I get some waves and some spiral curls. I can brush out my curls for day 2 and get some bouncy waves. Or I can refresh even with just water and get spirals back in some places.
      I wish I knew my hair was curly 30 or 40 or 50 years ago!

    • @rachelkain2706
      @rachelkain2706 Před rokem +1

      I just continued with my same routine as I grew out. Did a couple of chops along the way to speed up the process. I guess it depends on what your coloring routine was like, but I focused on the new growth rather than worrying about the part that was eventually going to get cut off. The biggest difference was that new growth was less porous, so I needed lighter conditioner/fewer emollients.

    • @rachelkain2706
      @rachelkain2706 Před rokem +1

      @@Silverhaired59 silver/gray is not automatically more coarse! I still have fine to medium hair, but I need more humectants and fewer emollients! I think silver hair is generally drier, just like aging skin.

    • @carlawade6861
      @carlawade6861 Před 2 měsíci

      @Silverhaired59 me too. My mother always combed it straight and never taught me how to work with my curls. I'm now 50 and embracing my waves and curls. It's completely different methods I don't know what to do. I started with OGX shampoo and conditioner for curly hair. It feels so much healthier and everyone loves it. I'd like to enhance the curls more though. And letting my grey grow in may change things, but I'm still learning. I was surprised at the change a different shampoo/ cond.could make. Leave in conditioner after the shower and always sleeping with my hair pulled above/off me on the pillow now it curls/waves all the way to the root.

      Have you experimented with different types of brushes? I ask because I know for me, certain brushes will not give me definite curls as much as others.
      Brushes like the denim brush, Felicia leatherwood and tangle tweezer splits my hair and makes it look more like a perm. I don’t use those brushes to style. They do however do well with detangling so I normally tend to use those for that.
      Bestool detangling brush (which is normally for natural, kinky hair) gives me better results. I found a cheap dupe on Shein and I think any detangling brush for natural hair will do the job.
      I know you’re probably exhausted but I do suggest try to experiment all avenues. May not be the product itself

I was just wondering how you would recommend selecting products when you have multiple hair textures? Most of my hair is medium in texture but the back top third is extremely coarse and thick. I'm finding it difficult to find the right balance in products as my medium-textured hair has a looser wave pattern than my course hair (which is more curly) and I'm concerned it will be weighed down by products designed for coarser hair. After that I either do mist it with plenty of water and reapply the leave in or I wear updos for the rest of the week. But the definition does get lower and lower as tou get farther from washing day. I just don't mind it very much!

      Braids…I have the Shirley Temple curl pattern and braids are about the only option. It will also drastically cut down on tangles overnight. You could try something like curl rollers or flexi rods, it would allow you to set the shape a little better but I haven’t tried it myself. Maybe rag curls for something a little more comfortable.
      From my own experience, this curl pattern is one that only really thrives for the first day or two after washing. Because my hair tangles if you look at it sideways, I keep it braided and/or bunned if it’s not drying. This does help keep tangles at bay and reduce the time I spend trying to somewhat control the wildness, but it does mean the curls change to braid waves after a couple of days. It’s a trade off, depends on if you want curls or to reduce the time required each morning.

    I learned so much. I am currently 15 (in my last year of high school) and since I was in fifth grade (perhaps 8-ish at the time) my mom started straightening my hair and making me do keratins because she got stressed with my hair (she has straight pin hair), I used to have 3b curls. Last year, I convinced my mother to let me go back to my curly hair, I had my curly¿ roots till my shoulders and the rest was straight (till the waist), being impulsive, I went and chopped my hair a bit under my shoulders, now I have mixed curls, some strands are super curly, some are wavy, and my front pieces don't curl. My ends (maybe 2 fingers long) are still straight so my theory is that those straight ends bring the curls down and they don't form.
    I really need help because it does affect me a lot knowing my curls are not the same, if someone has some tips or something I would really appreciate it.

      I don’t have much experience since I’m also learning but I believe that your hair will heal eventually. Treating the hair with its due care and letting it grow and cutting the ends that are not healthy will bring back your natural hair. It may take time, but there’s hope. Also, there is people that has different hair types in their hair. I hope it helps. Good luck through this process :)

    The non-stop scrunching! When I started styling my hair curly, I thought I had to scrunch every step; because that's what I was told by the people on the internet!. Gladly I realized it wasn't necessary. But is good to have backup advice.
