    I have watched quite a lot of videos arguing back and forth on the perfect routine, the do's and don'ts, and hundreds of different products. I honestly just picked up leave in conditioners and oil and then gave up because it was overwhelming. I saw your video randomly and it was so refreshing. I appreciate your approach, your step by step results, and your final words of advice/encouragement. You've encouraged me to try again. Thank you :)

    Out of all videos I've watched this is the one that makes the most sense. Half of my hair gets wavy and another half barely holds anything no matter what and usually just straightens up really fast. But people keep telling me that my hair is curly 🤦‍♀So as you said "the question is, do you actually have enough wave to wear it wavy?'. Tho I do have some waviness, I'm not sure if it's enough to even try wearing it wavy. But then it's never completely straight either... Hell of a situation
    Great and very refreshing video, thanks a lot! :)

      Same here. Had curly hair as a child and it used to be really wavy, curly even when I had a long bob (my shorter face framing bits still are) but I've been growing it out past my chest and just wearing it straight/blown out bc it's not wavy enough anymore. But what I love about it is it's so versatile. It holds heatless curls/blowouts so well, usually lasts until I wash it again. With a bit of work you can definitely make it look more wavy. And it's also easily straightened without much heat. As annoying as it can be, it does have its perks!

    And today was the second wash and I realise I destroyed my curls by combing through it with my fingers cause I though that's how you scrunch out the gel cast , I also realised just how much I just keep touching my hair and just need to stop lol ! And also needed more leave in product.

    I have identical hair and have been cgm for a few years now. Check out Kinky Curly, great for low porosity, coarse hair. I love Biolage HydraSource Conditioning Balm for low porosity hair. I clarify all the time, and also use Malibu C Undoo Goo, which removes hard water buildup. The Briogio gel is by far the best, but absolutely clarify afterwards as it contains protein which is no no for our hair type. Try plop diffusing where you rest your hair on top of a counter or hamper, on a damp towel, and hover diffuse (to defy gravity). Follow that with pixie diffusing on the ends. You can see Gena Marie do this process. Also tidy up the pattern by twirling around your finger so it curls in the correct direction. Add hairspray to keep the hold overnight.

    dont worry about the cgm, many people use it to start their journey but most will deviate, even curlier girls lol. and make sure to clarify every once in a while, the product build up can eventually weigh down the waves and make it harder to keep hydrated ❤️

    Your hair has highs and lows naturally and it'll lighten a bit by itself as you spend more time in the sun. Don't color it! Leave that for when you start getting a lot of white hair and you have to decide whether you're going to embrace it or disguise it.
    The wave in my 2C hair took about 6 months to develop "memory". My hair is high-porosity and fine. For me, light conditioners, no creams, and hard hold gel is what works best. It takes a while to "learn" you own hair! You're doing a great job so far. Keep at it.

    I 100% agree that what works for one person doesn't work for another. I break the rules all of the time and love the outcome. However, something I have found that might be universal is the game-changing effect of a diffuser. Water weighs down our waves so if your goal is more bounce and definition, highly recommend a diffuser. One more thing to mention since you are newer to this, don't be surprised if your styling routine needs to change from season to season. Without fail, my hair is less wavy when the weather gets colder because the heat coming on in the house dries out the air too much. Each fall I worry that I am losing my waves and then remember it's just the lack of humidity.

    From all the Curly Girl Method videos I have watched, your hair is the most identical to mine. This is an enjoyable mini science project. Thank you for taking the time to explain it so logically. Do you need hair protection when you sleep? How long do your waves last with/without protection? And can you suggest other ways to wear the waves other than letting it down?

    • @mejulialee
      @mejulialee  Před 2 měsíci

      Since I have soft waves I don't really bother with hair protection. Eventually I'll get a silk pillowcase, but it's much easier for me to do a quick refresh routine the next day than be uncomfortable sleeping with my hair wrapped up. I recently made a refresh routine vid on my IG: @mejulialee that you can check out! I've been enjoying wearing my hair out and natural, but if I try some other hairstyles I'll share them in a video 🙂

    if you lighten your hair i would recommend doing a highlight cap, and only going halfway up the strands that you pull through. so you can get a gentle balayage, and show off some warmer brown tones, without getting streaky stripes towards your roots.

    Hi Julia, Thanks for sharing your routine on the channel! I would be against changing hair color if you still want the low maintenance routine and if you want to maintain your natural shiny hair. Low porosity = healthy and depending on how light you want your color to be that might take you to the porous (damaged) type of cuticles. Then you might need to change hair products to suit your new hair needs and reconsider your budget for maintaining the new color. I'm not a stylist or an expert on hair, I just have the same hair goals and the same haircut as you do. It might be boring to some but I prefer not setting up hair appointments too often and having brown healthy hair.

    • @mejulialee
      @mejulialee  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks for your take on the colour! What always turns me off is the cost of maintaining it, and you're right, it'd be a whole process to find new products to work with coloured/damaged hair 🫠. Some may think brown is boring but it's beautiful! Just need accept my white hairs 🤍

    I’m so happy this video came up in my feed! My hair is so weird. I’ve always had what we call “self-fall” in my language, it twists at the ends and looks a bit hippie-ish 😂 but it turns out with certain shampoo and conditioners I can get pretty damn good waves if I scrunch it after washing. However, if I use sulfate and silicone free stuff it looks like shit 😅

    The layers really lift your hair to give a nice natural look. How are you maintaining it in between washes, do you wash it often? Mine is hip length type 2a hair. Rather than use a lot of products, I just braid slightly damp hair for beach waves. I won’t get mine layered as due to its length I wear protective styles (buns) and retentive styles (braids).

    So does your hair stay curly after you train it to be curly? I’m now just discovering about this process. I have VERY straight hair and i don’t like to spend too much time doing my hair daily, jf if I do this, will my hair stay curly like yours at the end of the video? If so how long does it stay like that without keep having to upkeep

    • @kathyo9420
      @kathyo9420 Před měsícem +2

      You can't "train" your hair. It's impossible to train hair. Your hair does what it wants unless something else makes it perform differently. So if one has wavy hair, it's always wavy. Repeated disruption of a curl pattern doesn't destroy it, either. What we do when we blow our hair out is different than what we do when we encourage the waves. We add more product or different product, we diffuse instead of direct heat with a brush. Doing this repeatedly over time, say if we're encouraging our natural hair pattern, we would cause less heat damage because of those factors, if that makes sense. I've blown my hair out straight for decades, and in that time th front of my hair has yet to "learn" to stay off my face, no matter what I do. But if I let it go curly, it miraculously stays off my face. Why? Because it's doing what makes it happy, which is wavy curly. Even loaded with products, it never falls into my face. If your curls and waves aren't behaving right away, but a month or two jnto your curl journey it suddenly looks "better" it's not because you've trained them, it's because you're likely hydrating a lot of damage (though in truth only a cut removes damage and nothing "heals" it). Hair is like kids--its happier when it gets to do what it wants to do. Cuts don't encourage curl patterns either, it simply shortens the strands and changes the overall look and shape of our style when it's done. So if you don't typically wear layers, adding layers wonr make your curls tighter, it just makes then shorter strands.
      I hate CGM, especially when it helped create this superiority complex in their devotees that wavys aren't curlies. Everyone has different curl patterns, but it's all curls. Use what works for you. It's trial and error, but you'll find it. If your curls fall flat at the end of the day, try a firmer gel. If your hair feels crispy, try adding a curl cream. Youl figure it out.

    • @KenzieSings143
      @KenzieSings143 Před měsícem +2

      The curly girl method is meant to pull out your natural wave pattern. sure it does style your hair (so in a way, “force” your hair to look like that), but even so it’s a way healthier way of achieving these kinds of styles because you’re not using heat, and you’re doing a lot to keep your strands moisturized. if the cgm is too much work, don’t bother! but if you don’t mind the effort and like the way your hair looks, then go for it! mix it up, do the cgm sometimes rather than all the time. your hair is yours to style and at the end of the day, it’s dead as soon as it leaves your scalp. we’re always “forcing” our hair to look one way or another.

    How do I now my hair type? I think it's similar to yours just by looking but how do I make sure?

      Also I've been using keratin shampoo, conditioner and mask for years, do I need some sort of cleansing/detox shampoo method before I try to change my hair to my natural wave?

    I'm much wavier than you (2c-3a), and I can't use sulphate/silicone free shampoo. It makes my hair stringy and I find it unsustainable, lots of buildup that requires clarifying all the time. Thought I'd share my experience!

      I think my hair is better with silicones too - still figuring it out. Thanks for sharing!

    Do you use the low porosity shea moisture shampoo for every wash? I’ve heard it’s a clarifying shampoo and was wondering if I could use it 2 times a week.

      I was, but I'm not sure it's good for my hair as I also saw it's a clarifying shampoo! I think your hair type and how much product you use will determine how often you should clarify - another thing to experiment with. I'm going to be trying out Prose next and will report back!🤞

    I think you have more 1c hair than 2A

      I've done quite a bit of research on this and my hair is likely a mix of 2A and 1C. 1C belongs in the straight hair category - it air dries straight with a few bends here and there. 2A is the least wavy of the wavy hair category and it air dries as beach waves - which is what my hair resembles most. Noting that I'm also at the very beginning of my wavy hair journey, and waves tend to become more defined as your hair gets healthier. I also have a couple coiled pieces at the back of my head depending on how much effort I put into styling.
      Ultimately I don't think it's all that important to box yourself into a specific category - most people rarely perfectly fall into a single hair type and hair tends to be a mix of a few similar hair types. No one needs to justify their hair type to anyone - what's actually important is simply understanding how to care for your hair the way that works best for you and gives you your desired results. My intention is to help and encourage others who have a similar hair type as me - which folks can recognize visually.
