- Tim over at Turgworks #Woodworking is hosting the #Scrapwood Build Off again and this wall-mounted hand tool cabinet made from reclaimed and recycled wood with a drawer and shaker style door is my entry. It also coincided with @timbeconaus sending me out a Microjig Fit Finder 1/2 Gauge to test out and review, so I use it throughout the project to show you what it can do. Basically, it makes half laps and finding the centre of things a breeze.

As time progresses the term "scrap wood" gets narrower by the week... what we called scrap a few years ago, now is just substantial project material 😉. I think it's the right mindset anyway and you are proving it! Nice cabinet! Oh... and one will always get new tools, so there's no end to this kind of projects!
Ironically I pretty much live by the philosphy there is no such thing as scrap wood as I can find a use for just about anything! 😅 No matter how small there is always wood glue :P
I was staring at the property stakes surveyors used to outline my property for a fence, when i realized they were red oak…. yup, when the fence went up, i turned them into 5x7 picture frames

I was lucky I found it before I finished the project (just :P) ... and that nearly all my projects are scrap wood 😅

Shop cabinet was handsomely made (I just didn't want to say "very well made")! Lots of usable scrap in front your place...lucky you! You put the fitfinder to good use! Win! Win! Win!
All the Medium to High density housing around here sadly means more furniture and household waste than a dozen hobbyists could use is dumped every weeks :( Just this week I left a solid pine dining table top out front because I couldn't see an immediate use for it and have nowhere to store such a large slab. Still, the silver lining is I rarely need to buy any wood!
@@FixitFingers Oh no! You could have cut the table top into a couple of smaller pieces and tuck them against a wall or something! Next time!

First in Jesper. Well with Tim popping up in everyone else's videos I needed to get on the Turgworks cameo band wagon :P hahaha It is honestly a lot handier than I thought it was going to be. A little pricey for what it is, but does what it was designed for well.
Really nice to see the Microjig tool in action throughout a build.

To be fair a bonfire would be justice for a lot of the stuff I use 😂 I like finding ways to use up that which was destined for landfill. Give the tree another crack at being loved :D

Awww thanks Bob, that has genuinely made my day. I am fortunate to not often get the kind of negative comments I see on larger channels made by keyboard warriors who forget a real person has made the content for the enjoyment of others, but when I do comments like yours remind me of the kindness of most people out there. I hope you enjoy the back-catalouge... just don't go too far back, there is some god aweful rubbish early on 😅

Great video James. I'm really impressed with the way you have developed your workspace over time. Having a matching paint scheme really does add to the look of the place. Keep up the good work.
Piece by piece. The matching paint was always planed, ties it all together nicely. Still lots to do! Will take me another few years to fill it up I reckon ;)

I keep a whiteboard of tasks to do... but I find it fills up faster than I can wipe them off :P

Thanks for another great video Fixit Fingers. I really enjoy the style of how you present your project and instructions. I'm a very noob builder - but getting better - and these help. Plus, I seem to have a bunch of scrap wood around that I want to try to use in something.

Cheers Jeff. Today is litterally 4 years since I started my channel as its come a _long_ way in both presentation and building stuff. Workshop projects out of scrap are the best (and cheapest :P) way to get started. Firstly you get practice, secondly it doesnt matter if you bugger something up, thirdly it costs almost nothiing, and finally at the end of it, you've got something like a bench, cabinet or jig that will make the next project faster, easier and/or more accurate. Best of luck!

Nearly starting a fire while wood working, classic. i did a similar thing sharpening an axe on my belt sander, the sparks went straight into the dust bag. That FitFinder works so good, it could be a cool video to make a v2 from wood. That cabinet turned out great btw and your draw making technique sure is smooth, i guess you get that after making 54 on the apothecary project lol.
I did get rather a lot of practice with these little drawers...if only I could make them the right size 😅 You should give the DIY one a crack!

You laugh but some of that wood was nearly 5 years old in the shop 😅 The trick for me lately has been to try not to add any more... it took a lot of will power during council hard rubbish weeks I tell ya!

Just make sure you measure whatever you want to fit in the drawer a few times before adding dividers :P hahaha

There is something very satisfying about using up all those odd shaped bits in the pile. I think of them as my 'to-do' list ;)

Enjoyed that mate, came out great! You're getting some great use out of those planes too, handy to have. That jig looks handy, not that anyone is incapable of dividing something by two, but just speeding up that part of the process looks to be the win. Didn't realise this challenge was a thing either, might have to bash something together :)
Tim is mostly on Insta so not really a CZcams challenge and it is primarily a UK thing. He's a funny fella I found through Jesper and Dainer recently so as I had the perfect project on the books thought I'd jump on. It is certainly an efficiecy tool, and most useful if you jump between a lot of odd thickness stock, such as scrapwood. Honestly, while I found excuses to use the jig for this build, it came in a lot more useful than I originally gave it credit for. As I dont have a thicknesser and they are much faster than sanding, the planes however are definitely seeing great continued use!
Great project mate, well done and really like how you made this from scraps... many people don't know that my tool cabinet was from scraps as well, only thing i purchased was the plywood.

I'll be honest guys, I didn't know how useful I'd find this jig, but working mostly with odd sized timber the more I used it the more uses I found for it. Very handy workshop addition. PS - apologies for the thumbnail...only one or two click bait complaints so far but a lot more eyeballs than my regular vids so it seems to be working 😅
I would love to finish off my Kreg workbench with the microjig groves and add a side panel for 90 degree joints or just to hold items without a vice. I have two Kreg 50cm X 162cm workbenches bolted together longways just waiting to be finished. If I could incorporate a router and a table saw into this table top it would be the ultimate garage workbench for a typical home garage. I live in Sydney, maybe it could be your next big project.

You've actually correctly guessed my first big project of 2023... I made this clamp bench high so I can build a second bench underneath it which will contain a new router table too. I never throw away scraps... they always go into making shop items, storage racks, etc. for tools. BTW... how many times have you sliced your fingers going to grab things around that marking knife pointing up in the rack? ;)
None...yet! It's sharp at both ends 🤣 I am terrible at chucking bits until they are so chewed up I can't even use them as drill blocks :P

Cheers John. I realised I paid for the 12mm ply too, but that was 4 years ago and most was used for the 'real' project so still an offcut :P Hauled in some new bedslats off the street today to make up for using 'real' wood :P
@@FixitFingers I think there’s a statute of limitations on stuff like that. “Yes I paid for these bolts for this project but that never happened so now it’s just inventory.”

Years ago here hardware shops always had a selection of factory offcuts in bins at the back of the shop for wood at affordable prices. That has all gone sadly.
The slot cutter saves a lot of fiddling about.

You'd be hard pressed finding a wood using factory around here these days let alone one with a scrap supply they sell 😥 The slot cutter is a mildly terrifying router bit but very handy for this style of panel work. Thank you as always for your patronage and insights Eryk {Thumbs up emoji} ;)
hah, I've been playing with that jig this week as well. Had it on the bench unopened for a month as I thought it was too gimmicky to bother with, but then tried it on some half-laps, and they came out perfect on the test cut. Pricy for what it does though, must admit. 😐
Yeah if it wasn't gifted, I don't think I could justify the cost at $80... but then the same could be said of a number of blue jigs I own and paid for that do a single thing well, but you could make yourself for a fraction of the cost. Possibly one to look out for during a sales event!

What? Clearly the thumbnail is about the Junk Wood right?! 😅😋 I resisted doing click-baity thumbnails for 3 years despite all my YT mentors telling me otherwise... and the sad thing is, it bloody works hahaha (as long as the video delivers on the promise so you are not wasting folks time) We have a public holiday long weekend here in Sydney so the sponsor wont see it until Tuesday. A tool for dividing by two is not exactly at the top of must purchase list. Buying Perspex? You know those TV screens and computer monitors dumped by the side of the road ...
It is a handy little thing, but I must admist the price at $80 is a bit steep compared to other tools you can get for that sort of money. I'd not thought of TVs! I don't use it often and this bit I bought a long time ago for a 'nice' project so technically it was 'scrap plastic' but I'll keep that tip in mind next time I need some. Cheers mate!

But when you combine it with the microjig that’s called semiotics in which you establish a relationship between the text and the product, signaling said relationship to the viewer. @@mrchedda totally understand mate. I've traditionally always avoided this style of thumbnail, if you look back through my catalogue it's only recently I've experimented with anything other than. 'I build this' style. Sadly, I guarantee if I'd simply worded it 'fit finder review' or 'scrap wood hand tool cabinet' on the thumb, the video would have got 20% of the views it has. The majority of people watch it through after clicking, so they do appreciate the video, my job for the sponsor is earning those views. Dude the problem is easy to solve with the fit finder and finding the depth for the cut of the miter saw. Clamp a piece of wood to the bottom for the fit finder the top of the clamped wood is now the height to which you set the blade! You are second person I have explained this to on CZcams! Duh!😁🛫
