Julia Hartley-Brewer’s furious clash with vegan campaigner

- Cambridge University students have voted to push for a completely vegan menu across its catering services.
Julia Hartley-Brewer clashes with Nathan McGovern, who organised the vote for vegan food.
He says: “A food system that relies on animals makes no sense whatsoever.”
Julia responds: “What are you talking about? We are omnivores!”

The worrying part of this for me is not to do with whether or not eating meat is bad for us humans or the planet. The worrying thing for me is that people gleefully take freedom away from other people because they "know best". Freedoms are easy to give up but almost impossible to get back, look at any communist/dictatorship country over the last 100 or so years!!
No freedom for the animals that people gleefully take via consumption - where's the concern there?
The vegan movement has gone from being a rather whacky and cranky diet choice to a global cult on a mission to turn the world into a culinary North Korea.
You take the animals freedoms
@@SuiSock Animals aren't humans they don't get to have any freedoms unless they're living in the wild in which case they get to enjoy being ripped apart alive by other animals who want to eat them, which sounds to me a hell of a lot worse than being quickly slaughtered for food. @Adrian H so you'd rather live your life in a concentration camp from a child, to be gassed to death.. than live free outside and have a possibility of being caught by another animal?

This University student doesn't understand that the poorest people on the planet, need animals to survive, up in the mountains, goat herding or in a desert, or Greenland. That is a MASSIVE amount of people he is totally in denial about.
He's not advocating to those people. Moreover, generally the poorest countries eat the most plants because they are CHEAP. An inuit, or Bedouin who genuinely need animals to survive, fair enough mate. For westerners, abstaining from animal products is attainable by nearly everyone, and is magnitudes better for animals and the environment. No brainer.
@@MrTheoptimiser "plants" are not cheap everywhere and anyway, third world type places grow their own or forage.
However, it is common people might keep a cow, or sheep or goats or chickens.
They can also bee exchanged and so on in barter.
In fact the word 'fee' comes from Old English and meant 'livestock' originally as live stock was used as part of payments.
Livestock were important in winter for survival.
Unfortunately, it has been a fact of life for eons and that is what the hardcore vegans are in denial about and even want to attack people about it. Great humanity.
Fact is, there are good benefits from being vegan for a period but so what ? Let people do it in their own time ( if they want ).
Forcing ideas on people just has a repellent effect.
I think protein is not just from meat but we are deeply ingrained for many reasons, including instinctual.
@AlienCactus True, plant food is not cheap everywhere but in the majority of the third world it is less expensive than animal products. The Bedouin type subject cases are relative outliers in that regard. Again, no one is suggesting those with genuine necessity to source calories from animal products change their behavior.
Nothing in human biology suggests we need animal products to maintain health. You can look to The Adventist Health Study or The China Study, both of which suggest positive outcomes from a plant based diet, especially as it pertains to longevity and avoidance of heart disease.
I'm happy to grant animal use may have been imperative to human survival in the past, but what about this justifies using animals in modern life, particularly in the first world?
That flesh eating is instinctual is nonsense. It is a learned behavior that most of us are conditioned to from birth. Do you think you could hunt prey with nothing but your teeth and bare hands? It is also the case that raw meat is repulsive. Humans have only managed to make meat palatable via cooking, and indeed adding plants such as spices.
Fortunately it is impossible to compel anyone to do anything, but what is wrong with suggesting (with words) that one's actions may have negative consequences. I'm not holding you in specific rebuke. Society as a whole has got this one wrong. There are victim's involved, human and animal that one must consider when making choices.
Even if you end up disagreeing, thank you for taking the time to have the discussion. Cheers.

Virtue signaling is all the rage among young people.
That's incidental, it's all about the likes👍
It’s not denying access Because it’s not preventing them from eating elsewhere, but simply not offering it as an option. Oh, and it helps by not feeding all the grains and soya to animals and instead using a fraction of it to feed all the starving people and then reforesting the remaining land
because demand will go down for meat products and in the long term will result in less animals farmed, less crops wasted on feeding those animals and more land for growing crops for humans,
@@dawiddrewicz3112 Exactly! But people get VERY emotional about meat consumption. They also don't like being given the label "Carnist", meat eating is not natural, it's just become the norm in SOME, not all societies. i wonder how long this will last, when these cafeterias are empty because no one is going in for a vegan meal
It's funny you say that. At my uni Warwick they did a trial for a year and then the vegan cafe was rammed so they made it permanent.
@@logitech2010100 did it have 2 seats :). 2% of Americans id as Vegan, 5% as vegetarian.
So if you are excluding up to 98% of your customers, you will have problems getting bums on seats.
Considering a normal cafeteria , you can still get veg/vegan food, so it excludes no one.
Most people eat meat, they like meat, they will continue to eat meat, if they can't get meat in the Uni, they will go down the road and give the local pub/restaurant/shop business.
True, McDonalds, KFC etc are going to do very well out of this stupid decision by these tyrannical little commies.
Why would they be empty, especially as veganism is on the rise?
@@FreakHarryPotter because you are excluding the vast majority of patrons, who are neither vegetarian or vegan. You also have a limited patron capture as you are fundamentally just available to staff and students at the university.
so while a vegan restaurant might be able to survive elsewhere, that's because it's market is far larger, it can be accessed by anyone, i.e. people will travel for it , with these there is a restriction on the who can access it.
It's not like school where people are forced to eat at the school canteen, so people will choose who are denied meat within the establishments canteens they can just walk 2 minutes down the road and get meat at a restaurant, fast food , pub.
I remember (just) when I was a student, there were normal students and then there were others who felt the need to sell themselves. The former group, the vast majority, just got on with stuff and were ….. like normal really. Have we not seen something of this everywhere?
I was a student in the early eighties. The reason we should not rely on a vegetable based diet is the amount of land required to feed the billions of people who will need to be fed animals can be put on land that can't be used for plant based production. Plants unlike those animals are more susceptible to climate and weather conditions. Children need certain foods in order to be healthy.
I don't agree with factory farming, pork and chicken being a good example as I prefer my pork from farms that keep their pigs in fields, away from farrowing crates and where they have access to mud baths and digging, and with chickens free-ranging they produce better eggs. I can see an argument for a vegetarian diet but even here bulking agents and added chemicals are a real problem in the food industry. Not everyone is capable of following such diets either there are a large number of conditions which would be problematic on such diets. For me some vegetarian (without certain seeds, grains and pulses) is OK for others it could be a definite no.
