  • Julia Hartley Brewer clashes with Insulate Britain spokewoman Tracey Mallaghan, after the group reportedly warned it would "unleash hell" if its demands are not met.
It comes as London’s transport network has been granted a High Court injunction against the group aimed at preventing them from obstructing traffic.
Transport for London (TfL) said the civil banning order applies to 14 locations around the capital including some of its busiest roads and it follows several previous injunctions against members of the group.

You can only save 90% if you are starting from zero no insulation and the theoretical 90% is what you could achieve if you super insulated. So you would have to assess your current level of insulation to see where you are between 0 and 90% then calculate what it would cost you to increase towards 90% then look at you return on investment based of predicted future energy costs.

I’m an OAP, I lived 13 years in a building with single skin walls, no insulation or double glazing and no heating. On a very low income. I survived. There’s extra clothing, thick curtains, hot water bottles…in bad winters it was a bit rough but I didn’t come close to dying. A lot of people expect to sit indoors in a t shirt these days. And that woman is a complete and utter idiot.

Spot on! I'm 65 and remember living in a house with no insulation, no double glazing, and one coal fire which heated the water. We used paraffin stoves to heat upstairs before going to bed with hot water bottles. My grandparents lived way out in the country and didn't get electricity until the mid-1960s, long after they retired.

I have just moved back to England after 30 years from a 12th. centuary building without heating. I am 72 and winters were often -16°c I have survived in the way you describe and yet I had my choices and would not complain but I didn't have TV or a mobile phone and a four wheel drive car nor did I drink or smoke and my only income was a reduced pension. I live in dead mens clothes as only a fool would waste £100 on a brand new jacket. I am content, with nothing to prove and no social status to seek (I had that as a young man). Fat dogs sleeping on my bed kept me from freezing and often I had to make the choice, do I feed me or do I feed the dogs and ducks?? The livestock won! I finished their left overs Ha! Ha!

You absolutely nailed it with the tee shirt analogy. The best place to insulate is at source and as you very rightly point out by adding additional layers of clothing enables you to turn down the thermostat. So if you turning down the thermostat 1C equates to a 4% saving in energy so add another layer and turn it down another 1C and so on. So if your struggling to pay the bill turn the stat down to 15C add warm clothing and if you normally heat the house to 21C you have saved 24% on your energy bill without any personal discomfort by just adding some additional layers nobody stays indoors because it’s to cold to go out because it’s 15 C outside you put a coat on and end up taking it off when your moving about and put it back on if you stop moving layers are the clothing equivalent of a thermostat.

I was born in 1948, and grew up in a three-bedroom semi-detached house built in 1932. It had no cavity walls, had steel single-glazed window frames in all rooms and no insulation in the loft whatsoever. The only form of heating was by burning coal in fireplaces in two living rooms on the ground floor. There was no form of heating in any of the rooms on the upper floor, including the bathroom. Hundreds of British homes were built to a similar standard until the 1970s when loft insulation and central heating was being promoted by the late Tony Benn. Somehow, we got by.

I grew up in the 40's & 50's, when there were power cuts, one wood fire in the house, single window panes with thick ice ln the inside, frost on the ground that looked like snow, no fridge or washing machine, a copper with a fire underneath to heat up the water for boiling the clothes, a mangle fof wringing out the water, one radio with valves, no tv, no cellphones, Tracey has absolutely no idea what hardship is, but we were happy and survived!! Maybe if she had a proper job she'd have no time for sitting on motorways, stopping people from going about their lawful business.

In Germany houses have been re-insulated which is highly uneconomical (you'll never get your money back on the investment) and heavily insulated houses have been built for years. Not to mention that this type of building involves using massive amounts of plastic and often styrofoam insualation (very sustainable), you end up living in a closed off plastic bag of sorts which means you need additional electric air conditioning systems that have to run 24/7 to keep off the mold. Still prices in Germany for electricity and heat have been the highest in Europe to subsidize renewables that are still not growing at the rate that is needed to transition from fossil fuels. It's insane. It's all just a huge money grab for the building industry and the energy industry. Insulate Britain is super naive in thinking that within the framework of a profit-oriented economy that any of this will benefit the poor.
