    Sure, there is great food, a relaxed culture, nice people and all of the other things that you’re probably used to hearing about.
    However, one thing I don’t hear many people talking about are the things you are getting away from when you move out here.
    We can all look for things that we need to add to our lives that we believe will make us happier, wealthier and more successful, but, sometimes it isn’t the things we add to our lives.
    It is the things that we take away…

    You are spot on! In '91 I stopped watching TV (in the USA) and I noticed that I wasn't missing out on anything. Then in '96, I spent a month in Siberia where I couldn't read the writing and couldn't speak the language. (just like "Lost in Translation") When I got back to the States it was easy to see that Americans live in a dream world created by television.
    If something is really important, you'll find out about it. You will see people panicking, buying toilet tissue.

    I have a lot to say on this subject, and Brett is the first person I've heard speak of it. I am from the states and my first visit to Thailand was in August 2013. I fell in love with the country and it has changed me evermore.
    We flew into Bangkok, but stayed in Jomtien because we knew a friend there. I saw freedoms in that village area that we do not have in the states, and I even live in s/e Texas, where it's better than most states. We have laws against everything, just like Brett said, and I loved that and missed it here at home.
    Two examples: the baht buses. They wouldn't be allowed in Galveston because of all the dangers, but they would be perfect for the beach road. Secondly, the food carts. Health department wouldn't allow those either because of blah, blah, blah.
    My last visit to Thailand was in August 2018 after going back every year since 2013. Had to cancel plans in 2019 for personal reasons and then C-19 since March 2020. Might have to jump through a few hoops, but I am now looking to make the effort in March.
    BTW, I am a 75-yr old female and married. Not many women my age out there who want to leave the comforts of their homes, but I feel like it's now or never for me as I have already detached myself from most American activities and politics, both local and national. Life is just easier for me in Thailand, and I always feel better over there, plus it never gets cold, and no major weather catastrophes.
    I still have more to say and will add my other thoughts later.
    Thanks for listening, and, I love that bird.

  • @andyrbush
    @andyrbush Před 3 lety +15

    Totally agree with all Bret says here. I live in a quite isolated rural Thailand village most of the time
    now and love it and especially the people. I am the only farrang here or for miles around. In Thailand people will help you with anything, and I help them. That is easily the best part of Thailand for me, people actually care about each other and help.
    Folk that complain about the Thai visa system should try getting their Thai wife a visa and green card for the USA or a visa to the UK, and see how that works out. We got stopped every time at the UK and USA assport desks and basically insulted and disrespected because she is Thai. It is so bad that I no longer ask here to come with me on trips. I use a Thai attorney for the visa and 90 day report so there is no effort there.

I'm putting some things in place so I can leave the West and spend 90% of my time in the Far East and retire early at 45 in a couple of years time. Can't wait to get out of the UK when the ASQ is removed to the Far East.

  • @TinyMaths
    @TinyMaths Před 2 lety +16

    Such an interesting topic. There's an experience I've had here in the UK which, now you've talked about the advantages of 'not knowing the language', has gotten me thinking. I learned a second language (Italian) as an adult and I learned it pretty well because I spent significant amounts of time with Italians living here in London; I really immersed myself. One thing I noticed is that there was a small subset of Italians who everybody spoke about; those who had been in the UK for years but could barely speak English. People, especially non-Italians I knew, chalked it up to laziness mainly. Of course there would have been those who are particularly bad at learning another language.
    Anyway, some of these people often worked with other Italians, in restaurants for example, or ran a business with family, and sometimes worked jobs that didn't require much interaction with English people, and socialized almost exclusively with the small circle of Italians they knew. Now you mention this idea of 'being cut off' from the world because you can't understand what people are generally talking about, I have to wonder about some of those people never learned English; Maybe they were actually playing this game, you know, keeping their distance from society's constant bombardment.

    US government BS is not as bad as the UK. BUT in the US we tend to hide our taxes. I pay: rent, car tabs, , power, trash, water & sewer, cable, internet, gas, gym membership, car insurance, rental insurance, life insurance and I'm a member of 3 clubs. My car tabs are paid every year and they add new taxes on them all the time, one fee but lots of taxes. Same with gas, I don't see all the taxes just a price per gallon. But the total tax on gas in WA state is $0.495/gal = $0.131/L = 4.4baht/L. And lots of never ending red tape to start a business. Pretty much every state and city is spending more than they take in so keep raising taxes while offering worst and worst service. Plus we have an exploding homeless population (google Seattle Tent City) and drug addicts. The parks are not clean / keep up, and some are over run with homeless tents, between COVID and riots things were sort down forever (I recognize this was Thailand too, while not the riots so much) and the people are getting worst = woke. I love America, but I'm not convinced that America continues to love me... Looking at relocating in the next 2-7 years...

    Brett, made my day with you and your bird - great double act! As for the West (especially UK) vs Thailand then it's all the rules and petty regulations that are getting people down. People feel persecuted and then take it out on one another i.e. reports of supposed wrongdoing like putting "trash in the wrong colour bag" etc. One reason why we love Thailand so much is people just get on with it. Most Thais are focused on on providing for their families. People are so much happier here and that's even those who just live in a shack. Chok dee!

    Thank you very very much for looking at the good image of Thailand. Many western foreigners have complained about the poor English talking skill of Thai people. We accept that. Even educated Thai do not like to talk in English because they feel shy and are afraid of making any mistake. I have one suggestion for people who want to watch News and any entertainment. You can ask the Mobile companies (AIS or True) to install a cable box in your house (since you already use their internet). Then, you can enjoy watching the premier league, any European leagues, American Football, Netflix, etc. They are very cheap for such entertainment.

      @@dzllz I currently stay in the Estadio neighborhood. I feel safe during the day, though at night, it definitely feels less predictable, and Estadio is considered one of the nicer areas. I like Medellin okay but I feel that it's not as economical as the places I like to go in Southeast Asia.
      For example, here in Colombia, real inflation was something like 20-30% over the course of the last year. No matter how much I like a place, inflation that high is an uncomfortable feeling for someone looking at the long-term.

    What brought me here?
    Getting pulled over in my unregistered jeep, and the cops towing it.
    In the USA, even if you're a taxpaying citizen, who entirely owns your own vehicle, who pays for that vehicle to be insured, if you don't pay the government's registration fees every year, their goons with guns with literally stop you, tow your car away, and hold it under rapidly increasing inflation (30 dollars extra per day on top of registration fees, and 180 dollars for towing).
    After 30 days, if left unpaid, they literally sell your car to pay 'what you owe'.
    So yeah, thanks so far for all the great content. I'm looking to leave this hellscape they call the land of freedom.

    I understand where you're coming from with that, I just want to live a simple life with no or few pressures and as my mum who I was one of her carers, passed away last week, there is nothing to really hold me back bar the finances. Just under 5 years to retirement, if we get a good price for the property it'll be happening sooner.

Deleted social media, cut myself from toxic people(family included) back home. I’m Stuck in ASQ right now but hopefully this was the decision of my life. Can’t wait to start a new life in Thailand.

    Superb video that rang especially true for me! I've been living in Thailand for 3 years myself and my main reason for coming here was just that I wanted a quiet place to just be where I would be left alone. I love being able to completely disconnect from society altogether, it's wonderful to be an outsider who is accepted as such and yet is also granted the freedom to be able to do his own thing without any outside interference.
    It allows a person to gain a real and different perspective on the world and how it actually works without needing to be directly embroiled in the negative aspects of it. I can't even imagine being stuck in the UK right now dealing with and enduring all of the buearocracy, I had to get away from all that to experience this far more peaceful way of life and I'm very glad I did. I think it's important to unplug from the system to find out who we really are, now more than ever. Come join us over here if you are able to, you really can still change the focus of your life for the better.

    Mental hygiene. It is tough to maintain it. Even if you do not watch the tv, the news is being broadcasted to you through the mouths of your friends, family and colleagues. And if you have spent enough time not watching the tv, you can immediatelly recognize the tv content in every scentence you hear. Trying to maintain a decent level of mental hygiene during the plague19 fascism was impossible.

    Unfortunately many foreigners (westerners) move to my country trying to check out of the west but end up either bringing their politics from home with them or many end up not knowing their place as a guest and start making demands for Thai society and culture to change to fit their western ideals. Some feel like it’s their personal crusade to bring their “enlightened” postmodern politics to the third world. Many just cannot break out of their western worldview and can’t help applying their own cultural standards on Thai society despite coming to another country. And unfortunately a number don’t know their place and act too at home when it’s not their country.
