Liga MX teams that go deep in this are on the road for a month, and with awful travel schedules. Monterrey went from Salt Lake City to Seattle to Portland to Houston to LA to Nashville and then 3rd place game in Philadelphia. 7 games in 7 different cities from all over the US in less than four weeks. It is an absurd ask for the players. I don't blame teams for slow-walking some of their regulars early on.
That said, pointing out the attendance of games between MLS teams during the Leagues Cup is silly. Those games are just there to fill inventory. The point of it is to bring out the Mexican-American fans by bringing in Liga MX teams. They had an SRO crowd in LA for Tijuana, San Jose had 50,000, Leon-Portland was near capacity, full house in Austin, etc. Mazatlan couldn't bring out people in New England. It was founded four years ago, so not a lot of historic connection. Cruz Azul, Tigres, America and Monterrey will fill the stadiums when they get going. It might be dumb, but both leagues are getting what they want out of it.

@@dagosegovia843 I don't fault Mexican fans for feeling that way. My only point is that as long as the attendance for the Liga MX teams is strong in the US, neither MLS nor Liga MX are going to look at the Leagues Cup as being a bad thing. This was created with the most transparent motive, but -for better or worse-- also has played out as they thought it would.

The problem i see is that liga mx team is being used as a circus that rolls into town with a tired act of mediocrity. Players who already use to traveling have to travel more and dont get to be with their families or local fanbase. The liga mx is not pocketing any money from attendance to those so cold sold out games. The tv deals are also not on their favor either. They are getting a few of them to broadcast in mexico on open signal. The rest are on apple tv

I think the only ones benefitting from the LigaMX side are the execs. It's terrible for the fans and especially the players.
It's been obvious for years that the executives don't give a rats ass about player development or truly growing the league. They're personally getting wealthier, and that's the point of these miserable tournaments. They know that fans in Mexico can protest all they want, but the US market can still be milked.

I think the Leagues Cup would work if it was a home and away type of tournament that served as a first stage of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
There’s already something similar going on with the Central American Cup, so we might as well treat this as the “North American Conference” of the Champions Cup. But it would need to be home & away and intertwined with the normal calendar (like the Champions Cup is) instead of stopping both league calendars completely which feels absurd.

Which mostly comes down to MLS and Ligamx clubs. But I can understand people's complaints when it comes to the US Open Cup. Still, I'm not gonna pretend like the USA/Mex or MLS/Ligamx rivalry isn't entertaining. They should definitely have away matches in Mex to make it more fair.

No MLS matches should be in those big barns anyway.

What hurts it for me is that we need to see away matches in Mexico. I went to the Atlanta v Santos game this past Saturday and the crowd was not as large but that's because Atlanta United have been completely gutted with no Miles Robinson, Giorgos Giakoumakis, Thiago Almada or Caleb Wiley. They've all been traded or sold and so we're left with a very low budget team and Interim Coach. Fans know that and aren't going to the games to see this shell of a team. Not a knock on Leagues Cup to be honest.

As of now, its not clear at all. Can’t be greedy when the product and its entire foundation is at the brink of collapse. May these billionaire owners see this investment fail and may it be glorious.

They struggle to make Americans care about this tournament. How are they supposed to possibly make a country that doesn’t even get any home games to give AF?

The real play is USOC will end up being a spring tournament (with most MLS teams) so the schedule will be condensed, and Leagues Cup will be a summer tournament. This makes more sense for everyone involved like TV and advertisers.

Yes. The Leagues Cup is enjoyable... Except for all the good games like Chivas vs LA Galaxy. Some attendance is bad but much is good. Atlanta's attendance sucks because they are badly run! The tournament has been good.

Disagree. Leagues Cup has been entertaining. Vancouver vs LAFC was great! Last year the whole thing was exciting. Building traditions takes time. Cups produce revenue and interest for teams that can't win the league and playoff. It was great fun last year with ot games going to penalties. I also loved being in BC place and experiencing the fan base from Tigres. People trashing this sup are off base in my opinion.

Vancouver is actually pretty exciting with Gauld and Picault and three at the back. Typical MLS fan taking a shot at a Canadian team that probably doesn't watch the Whitecaps who just beat LAFC in LA, put three goals on Tijuana and played Tigres and Leon fairly close last year losing in Pks.
