Have long felt this way since WC Qualifies were that late Summer/Earyly fall Aug/Sept time frame you had the Euro guys starting looking lethargic not hustling walking not getting back after losing possession. I think in general Zimmerman is talking about that type of effort. I felt at the time a lot of the fanbase was doing a disservice by slobbing our Euro guys and giving the Domestic guys hell. A lot of the Euro guys at that time were teen early 20s immature and on social media. They saw the fanbase comments and felt untouchable. The fans love us we're in Europe we can do know wrong we're challenging ourselves in practice. That atmosphere made them ironically very lackadaisical. In fact the MLS guys at the time like Pepi/Aaronson etc had to sub in and start some games to save the campaign against the Centrie teams as we weren't matching the intensity of the moment.

There's nothing to 'freak out' about. Because of the 'Missing Generation' and because of the subsequent huge increase in quality of the US pool there's is currently a lot of overlap between the U23s and the US Senior Team. A number of U23s who would've played in the Olympics instead played in the Copa. This won't be a problem as the US pool matures. That being said, a much more athletic central midfield needed to be rostered for this tournament. Mihailovic isn't even a central midfielder.

McKenny, Weah, Adams, Reyna, and even Pulisic have all had periods where they werent in the first team at club level, and, unless injured, were a shoe in every single time. Im not saying that they had a guy ready to go behind them in every case, but its not hard to find more than a few situations where an out of form euro player was chosen over a much more in form option. Im also not saying that we had guys more talented that Pulisic and Reyna, but as a coach, you have to be sending clear messages, and the message of this last generation seemed clear. Go to Europe or you dont play.

The US lost to the better team. It happens. What people could be angry about is the way they lost. There was a lack of fight. You can lose with positives, but here they were all negatives. At least do the basics and make the other team have to work for the win. Morocco too were missing 5/6 players who their teams didn’t release tbf. Most tesms at the Olympics are under strength.

Most of the players playing abroad are playing at a higher level, but they also need to have to fight for their places and not just assume its a given. If you’re expecting to be picked you won’t necessarily be giving your all in games, but there also needs to be better competition for places. Right now the US lacks the quality in depth so its partly forced to pick certain guys as theres no one of a high enough quality behind them fighting for the position.
