    To all you folks watching this video, don't despair. Rick has 109,000 subscribers and if only half believe he is right, that's 50,000 viewers who will understand and spread the word to stop this stupidity. Before too long, Rick will have enlightened a whole lot more. Love your horses, but overall, understand them and let them be what they are. Thank you Rick for all you do for the most magnificent creatures.

    Heres a true story~ I worked for an equestrian college for girls in Ohio. I took care of the horses. They had broodmares to teach the students (most of the girls were spoiled and well off) about horse breeding. One mare was more protective of her foals than the others and the barn managers believed this to be bad as the mare was just "mean". They called a bunch of students to watch her as she delivered her foal and then within hours of the birth people were filing into the stall and making her uncomfortable. When she became agitated they called her mean. They divided the stall (can't remember how) to separate the two so the foal could nurse but not stand next to his mother. They forced the separation and obviously the mare became agitated. She was loudly repremanded. It made me sick. They intruded upon all of the mare/foal bonding like this. It seemed stupid and cruel and was being done by people who thought they were "horsemen" but were really just wannabe's.

    This imprinting will cause the foal mental damage. The foal will depend on the human to much, then be sold and won't have the attention, and the baby won't know how to act around other horses. It will become resentful and then of course end up abused by humans. A sad situation right here.

      Yeah. Like Clinton Anderson.. I agree with a lot of his training methods and how he deals with horses. He’s pretty smart and understands herd dynamics. But one thing he does that makes me super mad is messing with foals. “Touch and Rub,” “Turn And Go,” essentially he’s imprinting the foals and teaching them training exercises they shouldn’t be learning yet. Save that extra stuff for later; let baby bond with Mom and learn to be a horse.

Baby needs mom's milk for the protein, fats, & antibodies essential for it's health & development. Also I'd imagine baby would develop gastrointestinal problems. This is dreadful. For me as a goat keeper, I agree completely that imprinting on this level is super bad. When I have nannies kid, they have their own maternity pens so other nannies can’t interfere/hurt but the kids can all slip out and interact with other goat kids. Maternity pens for me are a necessity because our winters are super brutal. I always make sure to leave nanny and kids alone for at least a few days before I get the kids use to me. Even if I need to help with the kidding, I interfere as little as possible.
    Only time I had to full imprint on kids is in the event of rejected or orphaned kids. Even then, I make sure they get proper social time with other goats and kids. Now a pair of twin bottle babies, they have other goat friends and hang out with their maternal grandmother and aunts, even if they’re bonded to me, they can still function as goats. 🐐

    In fact a friend of mine got a really hard lesson from a horse owner when she tried to touch a two days old foal on pasture when we were kids. He was not amused to say it friendly. So we learned never messing with a baby and its mum the first five to seven days of its life.

    If you want to make friends with the babies and earn their trust, ripping them away from their mother is not the way to do it. Make friends with them in pasture without separating them from mom. If the mare trusts you she'll probably introduce you to her baby when she's ready to start interacting with the herd again. People are so fucking dumb. All they're doing is terrifying both mom and the baby.

    • @kerielwatson3197
      @kerielwatson3197 Před 4 lety +6

      Best friendliest foals I've met were born in a paddock, raised in a paddock and all the human interaction it got, came through the mother first. If mum didn't want us seeing bub, we didn't. If bub didn't want to see us, then they'd use mum as a barrier. Now I'm not going to say we ignored the foals because we absolutely wanted them to trust us... But babies bond with mother was always the priority, and if we chased the foal around its Mum, either mum would get pissed at us, or baby would stop seeing mum as safety. While we'd offer hands for bub to sniff and use language that invited approach, if baby didn't want to interact we never forced it.
      Every foal on that property doesn't need to be caught. They come to people willingly. They follow without the need for rope and halters. The foals grow up to be friendly but respectful horses who know how to be a horse, and know how to interact with people.
      I never understood why people felt the need to start interfering at such an early stage, when we have wild mustangs as evidence that even adult horses can become friendly and connected with people.

(Thank you Rick for your previous videos about body language) The baby still seems confused as to whom to go to. I'm not perfect, I have only been around 2 babies, but I know that any animal (dogs included) needs to imprint on their mom first. She was happy to let me touch and play with him without any problems. The foal is the nicest foal to date. Unless a medical emergency occurred, I was not allowed to interact with the foal until my mare allowed it.
    Took me a bit to get it, but I did...made things a heap load easier for me as well. It's not hard to do.

But I thought horses were caught with ropes, if they were too contrary to leave the pasture and come up to the owner on command. Rick has pointed out so many common sense reasons to NOT keep a halter on a horse, I can't understand why other owners do this. The example in this video of the mom wanting to nuzzle her baby, and the human-smelling halter getting in the way, is heart-breaking. Heck the whole video is heart-breaking. I wish the people who were doing this "imprinting" crap to this mom and baby would see this video and feel embarrassed enough to leave these two horses alone. You're fighting the good fight, Rick. First off, I have a question for you. Is apple juice healthy for a foal? All of my common sense says: "Heck no!!!" My comment is that this foal seems utterly confused. It doesn't know what to do!! Now, If I can see this shouldn't a 'knowledgeable 🏇 person' see this as well?
    Before ending I would like to say that I find your sense of humor/sarcasm hilarious!!!!! I don't know why other women have an issue with you.

      Maria Kennison people tend to “imprint” a foal so the foal seeks comfort from the human, not mom. It’s more convenient for the human to disturb nature and have nature cater to them than to work for the baby’s trust and respect. They also fed this foal apple juice because it’s sweet, causing the foal to also believe his only source of food *doesn’t come from Mom. It’s most likely unhealthy at this age because all the baby should be consuming is grass/hay, milk, and water, yet the humans are giving it apple juice.

      Pediatricians regularly tell human parents NOT to give their babies apple juice because it will rot out their teeth. Not to mention its just not good for them. I can't imagine it being any different for a foal.

    • @mayac218
      @mayac218 Před 6 lety +2

      sab speaking of paediatricians, I know a person who gives their two yr old child chocolate milk all the time. They have since 6mo. They sent the child to the aunt’s house for babysitting for the first time and got instructions to give only chocolate milk. Of course auntie can’t do that! She is a mother herself and knows it’s wrong. Tried giving white milk; nope. Tried water; nope. Nothing. Child won’t drink anything except chocolate milk. A few months later the child went to the dentist and had 8 teeth removed because they were ROTTEN.
      Now, tying this into the video. Can this harm the foal? Yes. Can this cause an addiction? Yes. Rots the teeth, gives a sugar rush, causes the baby to “need” the flavour..

    I've been watching your videos for a long time and I must say how thrilled I am that you showed this. I was a foaling manager at a large racehorse farm (50-75 foals per year) for 10 years so I know some about mares and foals. I used to bring the mare in the stall as her water was breaking (only because many didn't like stalls and they didn't fuss in this stage of the game). I would take the halter off immediately then stand in a corner, be as still as I could, only to watch if there was a problem. Once the baby was out and the sac was broken I would get out of the stall and stay outside the stall quietly watching until the foal was up, nursed, and meconium had passed. They would stay in the stall for the night and the next morning would be put in a small paddock by themselves. Again no halter ever for mare or foal except on mare only when moving. After a day they would be turned out into a large pasture with other mares and new foals. We never lost a foal this way and the foals would only be handled if something was wrong and halters usually weren't put on until weaning. No horses ever had halters kept on, something I really had to fight for because the daily workers liked them on because it was easier for them. I've never heard of anyone giving apple juice to a foal and this seems not only stupid but dangerous. Even if we lost a mare we would get the foals off bottle feeding as fast as we could. The learned fast to drink out of a bucket. I am so glad that you have shown this video so people can see how they are harming foals...so thank you for sharing this!

      So basically the mamma horse feeds and cares for the baby some don't but most do so when there like 5 to 6 months they get what is called weaned off there mamma so they don't get too attached because if they do ever get sold separately then the horse will feel depressed,scared but like me I have a 1 year old gelding was so friendly when I got him at 6 months he had just been weaned he got the care he needed from his mumma and was a happy baby some people take baby's off of mammas in the most horrible way ever and it's awful but most foals get the best life there treated so kindly and personally I think humans shouldn't interfere with the mamma and foal until there like 1 month because how do you think they survive in the wild horses know what there doing but touching and doing stuff with the baby when it's just born is wrong because the mamma is gonna be stressed with different cent and it will stress the mamma out and that causes them to leave them but my foal and many other foals were done properly and are gonna make great horses with the right owners but personally every single horse on this planet is amazing in there own ways no horse should be treated so horribly like if your against horse abuse and torcher it's awful and cruel and I wouldn't wish it upon any animal it horrible thank you for reading I hope one day the people on this world will grow up and start acting responsible thank you if you read the whole thing 💙

    I mean how would human moms feel if they did not get their time with their baby, or if a strange person that had nothing to do with the baby tried to make the baby like this random person better than the mother? If someone rubbed their baby with plastic bags and did all these other weird shit. The human mom (just like the horse) would be stressed out, and the human moms would probably be furious as they understand wth is going on.
    But nvm because they are "just" horses and apparently they should not be allowed to have a good bond with their baby or the baby have a good bond with it's mother...because all animals (including humans) turn out so damn well when they do not have a good relationship with their mom.

    In my decades of working at many different horse operations, I have noticed there seems to be a correlation to how "fancy" a horse property looks (to humans) and the amount of ignorance involved about horses. The fancier a barn looks alone, should raise tons of red flags, about how well the horses are actually taken care of.
    I'm sure there are exceptions, but in my personal observations I have concluded, that the more money that has been spent on appearances, such as box stall barns, arenas, 4 board fencing, manicured lawns, etc. the "nicer" it looks to a human's perspective, often times indicates a massive lack of horse knowledge --- to provide horses with what a horse actually needs, physically and mentally.
    And this video shows that fancy barn ignorance --- perfectly!
    This mom and foal were both born already knowing how to be horses. They are both paying a heavy price now, due to the ignorance of people.
    It is sad to see, how many people are suckered into believing horses have the best care, based solely on the appearance of the horse facility. Someone will likely be suckered into paying thousands of dollars to buy this foal, start riding it at 2 or 3 years old, all the while, when it never had the chance in those first critical days of life to start it's bone formation correctly to begin with, and this foal will end up with chronic lameness issues as a result of all of these things combined.
    As Rick says frequently "Critical Thinking" --- Learn it! And use It!

They spent lots of time making high quality fencing with multiple pastures so if one gets eaten down, then there are still other pastures to go to while that one grows back. She also does clicker training and positive reinforcement. If you’re interested in those, her CZcams and website have lots of information on those.

      I can second that. The barn that I ride at has five pastures, some trails, and a round pen. No need for any of that fancy crap. The horses have shelter (though they never use it), food, water, and space to run. They’re happier than any of the horses I’ve seen in high-end barns that are made to live in tiny stalls.

    My mare just last month had her first foal, it was unexpected and two months early(our estimation was wrong) and we don't have any stalls so she and baby have been in a large area near an open shed near the house. We didn't interfere with mom or baby. They have been left alone with our gelding and dad has been separated due to mom coming into season, which we never thought would happen, hence the foal being unexpected(in the beginning). Mom is very good and foal follows and plays away from mom, but she calls and he comes running. Been trying to get him used to us but he is a stubborn little cutie and so fluffy. takes after his friesian dad. With all our previous foal years ago, we never enclosed mom and baby in our once stable unless it was necessary. We are only now really trying to bond with him, it is a bit harder to do with mom being near blind in 1 eye from being kicked as she does get antsy when she can't see him. it will take some time, so i am confident it will happen in the next couple of months.
