I am a big dog lover, but I am GLAD that he shot and killed them both. They will be very driven to come back if you just scare them away.
Sissy ass people here saying the dogs should've been handled in a nonlethal way.. Yes they are somebody's pets but they were failed by their OWNER. Not by this rancher. Accountability goes a long way

I know this is old, but I thought I'd leave something here. I have a pit. I didnt go looking for him. He was dumped in the street and he decided to come to me afterwards. Took him home and made some calls, but ended up keeping him. 2 yrs later and he thinks hes a big cat baby. Lays upside down in my lap a lot. Never shows any type of aggressive behavior. Loves people and getting loved on. It's all in the care and upbringing and training on how they turn out. We have several cats and 2 kids. He absolutely loves our youngest. That's his baby. Happy pup and we have never been more pleased with a dog. I think we both taught each other well. Lol

Unfortunately the dogs we're not going to stop and the horse's had the right to be protected by a gun. I go back to the behaviours of the horse's and I was so surprised by how the one horse stood so still while the other horse was running hell fire around in first part. Wondering if it was an older horse or what just seemed odd. Maybe he was trying to be not noticed? Did anyone else notice that?

I've said for many years. No such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners. The same can be said with horses.
This video reminds me of a QH mare I had. We got her because she was savagely attacked by dogs, she had terrible scars & due to the injuries inflicted on her when she was chased into a star picket. She had a lot of ribbons etc from previous owners, yet due to her scarring was no good for the show ring, they gave her to us.
Sure she had a few issues and she had it in for dogs. A guy came over once with his dog, told him to lock it up as it started to bark and chase my mare. I told him that she'll either hurt or kill the dog. He just laughed until his dog got a permanent sleep kick to the head, this happened so quickly.
I told him, he laughed and his dog paid for it.

Where was the owner of the dogs? Thank goodness the horses had their human there to take out the threat. I feel the blame sits squarely on the shoulders of the dogs’ owner; simply because the dogs were let loose to do whatever they wanted and were obviously a danger to the horses.

I just think it’s funny that everyone wants to hate on him when they have no idea about his background as a police office, a K9 trainer and the many other things he’s done ... it’s just amazing to me how narrow minded the horse world is and how the majority would listen to someone that claims they know it all before they would even consider anything rick says ... it’s comical ... if you aren’t on board with what rick is saying then you have a lot to

I was walking my old goldenretviever yesterday. Then there was this not that big borzoi dog whose owner couldn't handle them. The dog gets free, runs up to my dog growling, my dog jumps up (he lays down when he sees another dog) and growls back and the other dog immidiately backs away. As soon as the dog stoped, i knew this dog wasn't trying to attack since they would have already been biting and they showed submissive behavior. There are differen reasons why dog attacks or does something agressive, like fear, frustration or seeking for example. I also think this dog did this because its part of their breed. What i love about my dog is that he won't bite if he isn't bitten and wouldn't given two fs about barkind or growling dog if they would be on the leash and not on his face.

  • @anng.4542
    @anng.4542 Před 6 lety +9

A lot of people posting here are well-meaning, kind-hearted, loving pet owners who have probably never encountered the destructive potential of dog behavior when it gets out of control like this. When dogs "pack" and their prey drive is fully engaged, it's anything but "playful and cute".
When off-leash dogs charge at people (and other dogs), these owners NEVER take responsibility. Instead, you always hear: "It's okay, he's friendly!" or "He just wants to play!" (Translation: Sorry, nothing I can do, hope he doesn't bite you!) Which is why I stay out of dog parks.
I appreciate the horses' owner firing 1-2 warning shots to try to scare the dogs, in hopes of running them off without injury. But clearly, hunting instinct overrode fear of gunfire and the dogs kept at it.
In the US, a lot of people don't understand that when a dog bites a person, it's a statutory offense (automatic crime) on the part of the dog's owner. In some states it's still lawful to shoot a dog on sight if it's chasing a sheep, no questions asked. Wonder if such laws also apply to dogs chasing after horses.
These laws come from the past, and I used to think they were unjustified, but watching this video shows the victim's (the targeted animal's) side of the story.

We had family that had an issue with a neighbors dog coming onto their property and chasing their chickens. She called up the sheriff and asked them who had more right to live. The chicken that lived on their property or the dog who was invading their property and attacking the chickens. The sheriff told her that if it's her chicken on her property than the chicken had more right to live. So I know that here in Oklahoma if a dog attacks your animals on your property you do have the right to shoot it. Yes, it was generous of him to fire the warning shoots. Under the same circumstances we wouldn't have been that nice.

I've always told people that I love animals and I don't want to hurt them but if it's a choice between my animal and somebody else's, I'm always going to protect my animal first. Also, thank you for speaking the truth about pitbulls Rick. Idiots are attracted to pitbulls and the dog pays. Makes me mad.

  • @TheAngieIshmael
    @TheAngieIshmael Před 6 lety +6

Rick, I am a dog trainer that focuses on dog behaviour modification, and it is very rare that I use food or praise when a dog correctly responds to my pressure (mostly psychological). The reward they respond to is my release of pressure (something I've been taught to use with horses AND dogs). This is what I rely on a lot, as a reward like a treat or praise is great when training for certain commands.
When I train a dog to give up its food or toy when I claim it, I don't "distract him" with anything like that, as that simply does not work when you don't have food, nor does it teach the dog to respect you as the top dog in the pack. You see this all the time with feral dogs and wolves; you will never see them using any praise or food to reward each other. If a higher-up dog wants a lower dog to do something, the lower dog either does it automatically, or gets a correction from the higher one. The reward is release. VERY much like horses

truly a shame, this is why i believe that every owner should socialise their dogs with different kinds of animals, and if they know they don't know horses and would prey on them then keep them locked up. My dog went to the stables with me all the time, she learned her lesson and respect from the horses most of the time! Now she knows exactly what she can and can't do around horses!

The dogs head would then be stuck on one of the fence posts along her road so owner would know what happened to it. Rural area and nice pet dogs allowed to roam free would pack up with other area dogs then go around killing neighbors fowl. It was just always the way and if you were worried about your dog, well then you properly contained it.

Thanks for this video rick! This brings me back to about 4 years ago when my mare and i were both attacked by two pit bull types. We were out having fun, just jumped a small fallen log and were just trotting. The only time this mare has ever bolted was with these dogs at her heels but the dogs were just as fast as she was. I decided to stop her and attempt to chase the dogs as that has worked in the past when being chased by dogs but this time it didn't work. These dogs were jumping up and biting my horse and my feet. I just loosened my rains and allowed her to defend herself. My job was just to stay on and keep the dogs from her hind end by steering her as i got the impression that if they latched on to her leg they could easily bring her down and we would both be dead. It took the owner to jump on the dogs to bring them back under control. I had never been so scared in my life and i've been in some pretty scary situations in my life! Luckily my mares injuries were only superficial but i ended up with psychological injuries from that incident. To this day i still have not been on a trail/bridle way because of fear that this could happen again. In the UK dog attacks on horses are far too common and with the brittish police and laws being as usefull as a chocolate teapot, nothing is ever done about these attacks!

I think let's say if the owner of the horses was not home.
I think eventually these horses would've killed or harmed these dogs themselves.
I don't think dogs are capable of killing horses this size horses aren't gonna sit there and just wait for that to happen
Horses will fight for their lives.
However they first are gonna want to flight before a fight.
Horses are easily capable of killing animals even the size of a cougar.
I've seen horses taking on cougars were the horses easily won.
One good kick or strike and it would've been over.
If the horses would've had more room this would've been a lot different.
This is why bigger pastures are so important.

rachael sunshine yeah, but these two horses look pretty thin. Not at thier prime. Here where I had lived in Canada. Dogs had killed horses depends on the scenario, but there are more then one there were in a pack. But horses in thier prime would have a better chance.

+Susan Gardiner It does happen you're right and l have read about some of these situations
most of the time this happens when horses are ill, too weak, to stand up for themselves.
A pack is difficult usually they'll try to grab a foal and pay extra close attention to the adults.
However a starving stomach would try to take the risk of taking on an adult for survival
But l'm sure these dogs knew that the horse was weak they'll take advantage of it.
      They can smell it.
      It's the hard truth.
But l think we both know what healthy horses are capable of doing for surviv too.

My late cousin had two big mules that he used for logging in areas where machinery was restricted. He got killed as a result of a logging accident .When these mules are ready to pull you have to be ready .My cousin fell on a tree stump and broke his ribs which killed him . His father was left with the task of finding a new home for these mules .He placed an ad and sold them to this woman. She had a rural place with a barn so she thought mules would be a great addition to her barnyard animal menagerie .For about a week she loved these mules then she would not make any more payments .These badass mules would not tolerate her two dogs .She feared for her dogs safety .The two rottweilers she had raised from puppies were peacefully coexisting with all the animals. The mules did not believe in coexistence with dogs so she wanted to return the mules. To complicate things my cousin had trained these mules to jump at state fairs so they could jump low fences.Mule jumping is different from horse jumping: czcams.com/video/qxREDmUSeGo/video.html I never found out what she did with the mules as my uncle passed away soon after this happened (about 15 years ago).

the dogs were going after that one horse at first because it was giving them a reaction. when the dog went to the second horse who didn't really react, other than a simple threat, he went back to the other who did react. when the horse being bothered brought the commotion to the other horse it started reacting and became involved too.
i had a dog that whenever me or my mom came home, the dog would make a beeline for the same horse EVERY day and go kinda predator on him for about 5 minutes, barking, snarling, snapping, grabbing his tail, then just stop. the dog never bothered with the other horses cuz they did not get excited or really react, they would stand there and do nothing, or just suddenly kick him. no dancing or running around, no half assed attempts to kick, no fun for the dog. all the dog got out of fucking with the other horses was nothing or pain.
ironically, that dog got his leg mangled intercepting a pitbull that was going after that same horse that HE himself tried to bite daily. once his leg healed enough that he could kind of run, he was right back to trying to bite the horse for 5 minutes every day.

sadly the owners of the dogs are at fault for not doing the right thing with confining their dogs to the yard and socializing and teaching them to be used to other animals etc. although the dogs are doing what they naturally do and that's to chase and attack to kill - well some of them, like these two dogs in the video. I agree to be honest that the horses owner did the right thing by shooting the dogs dead because they will continue to hunt down and kill horses etc. sad though that they also got hurt but they shouldn't have been there.

Those poor horses. I don't like having to kill the dogs but they didn't seem to care about anything but attacking the horses. I was trying to tell if they had halters on. Not good if they got them hung up on fencing trying to get away from the dogs.
We have a Choc Lab/Pit male that is 8-9 yrs old. We found him running out in the country by Whitewright, TX during the bad snowstorm in Feb 2010. He loves people. About two years ago, after spaying our female dogs, Buddy decided he didn't like the Doberman/Irish Wolfhound male, Chompers, anymore. He jumped over me and attacked him. Now we play musical dogs. We think he was fighting for my attention. He loves the girls but not our other male. Someone said Pits start acting that way around 8 yrs old and we better be careful. Since we found him, we don't know his upbringing. Any loud voices, he'll go hide or run to me for protection so a man must have used some force in his training. The males have been zeutered about a year ago but that only decreases their testosterone by 50%. Might have to neuter them if their behavior doesn't improve. They got into a fight again a few weeks ago. Keeping them separated is a royal pain! Not sure obedience training would work. Will look into it!

It was late at night and the chickens were coming in to roost, we heard some unusual noises and realized the coyotes had made their way into the inner circle. Took us 10mins to get out there to them and by the time we did the three coyotes we found had been trampled to death. I would have come out gun in hand when I heard the commotion from the start, just watch to see what the dogs were going to do. But as soon as the first dog went in and bit my horse it would have been a dead dog. Good horse owner, as for the dogs the owner should be charges with having vicious dogs and be made to pay for the vet care of the horses. The dog owner is responsible for what their dogs do, if they want to keep their dogs then they need to make damn sure they have control of the dogs. But because of a bad dog owner the dogs had to pay the price. I don't feel sorry for the dogs or the dog owner. Then horses are worth so much more than the dogs are. They are both companion animals amd livestock amd the owners have every right to protect them even if it means killing the dogs, had they been coyotes or wolves the ending would have been the same.

    • @nacierma57
      @nacierma57 Před 6 lety +1

Susan Bower what I mean is the horse is worth money wise than the dogs. They dogs were probably either free or the owner bred them. Whereas the horses are worth (depending on breed, and what they are used for) anywhere from a few hundred to thousands. Not worth as in how much you love them.
Personally I'd chose horses and cats over a dog any day.

Big problem here - This is all mother nature stuff but too often now, with lots of city-folks encroaching into rural areas, it gets out of hand where we used to handle it so this stuff didn't happen much. First off, the dogs have to be raised/trained/conditioned not to do the livestock like this, whether it's in their own territory or off campus. The only time the dog gets to act like this is when something or some animal is actually encroaching and threatening - or if that's actually the dog's job, as in herding/driving - there's a difference. Some dogs just never learn and, unfortunately, we had a 3-strikes rule when it came to f-ing around with the livestock and/or biting a human unwarranted. Third strike was a swift and humane ending of the dog's life. The reality is that a certain segment of the canine population on any ranch - just like a certain segment of everything - ends up getting culled for the better good of the outfit overall. I put my last Doberman down when he attacked a human unprovoked - and he was never trained or conditioned for that work - he just couldn't be trusted, so he had to go - I cried for days.

Our Pit was the most loving sweet thing. No crop or dock and most didn't even realize she was a Pit Bull. Her mom on the other hand was MEAN, aggressive because the owner was a PRICK! Made her mean, beat her, teased her etc. There is nothing wrong with the Pit breed. I have known others with Pit's whose dogs were just like mine, PUNKS =p Lap dogs, couch potato, popcorn eating "Hey let's snuggle" dogs. If it isn't Pit's it's Rotties, not Rottie's, it Doberman's. DK Dempcey Knight DK I agree, yet disagree. I always tell people that Pits should be the American dog, especially with children as they can take all of the tail pulling, paws stepped on, etc that children do. I will disagree though that all are as you describe. Some are taught to fight, but it is also bred into them. They are docile and friendly until they hit maturity. At that point, a switch flips and they are "turned on" - it never goes off. One of my favorite dogs was one that I rescued, bottle fed, socialized seven ways to Sunday. He grew up with numerous other pets. At almost 2yrs old, the switch turned on - no active event. He just suddenly started attacking all of my other pets. I saw the early signs and tried correction and intervention. Vet check, etc all normal. He killed one of my cats, and two of my other dogs - all of which he had grown up with. It was heartbreaking. I never blamed him - it was bred into him. Yes, Pits are great, but watch for the signs.

That's actually a myth, they were never bred to be "nanny dogs". That myth came from the fact that Pitbulls are supposed to be human friendly. The actual purpose they were bred for is just in their name alone. Animal aggression is a selective bred trait in Pitbulls. It's in their long history of breeding.

Grew up with pits. Best dogs ever. All they care about are pleasing their owners that’s why they fight. Picked up a pit used as a bait dog last year. Sweetest calmest dog ever. Got along with humans cats and even a rabbit. Use to be fear aggressive towards other dogs but with time patience and training she came around. I’m a dog groomer and she now goes to work with me everyday and loves all the attention from our human and canine customers. Along with her chihuahua brother I also rescued. They make a cute weird pair to stair at when they go on their walks.

@Storm Mist Owners of dogs were at fault. The guy had no choice but to protect the horses

Rick, how would Buddy and Mr. T react in a situation like this? Would Mr. T react differently than these horses because he was raised in the wild?

John Coffelt. Not talking for Rick but he did say the horses in the video were trapped in small pin and Ricks horses are not.

I feel bad for the dogs. They are just doing what dogs do. I hope the owner of the dogs got at least a ticket.

Michelle Scheer there's a news story on this(USA) something happened with the dogs that lead to this situation, but definitely not a good. Pretty sure, it's there neighbours dogs, Dogs shouldn't just run and attack(unless it's play obviously)

Their field is way too small for one horse let alone two. I'm not saying it's okay to have one horse only

For some reason l cannot get my youtube profile picture changed
I just want you to know we use rope halters now before making this comment
I think the owner of these dogs did a bad job with training his dogs.
The fact that there's a camera there tells me it's not the first time this has happened
I was however surprised the horses didn't fully strike or kick those dogs.
    Horses aren't vicious animals.
But l think the dogs were ignorant for attacking these horses
Usually dogs won't go try to attack big horses because they know one kick or strike and it's done
I've seen horses taking on cougars (mountain lions)
Horses sure are capable of killing animals big and smaller sizes
The horses need more room to run
But after flight there's comes fight and l think eventually these horses would've killed these dogs themselves let's say if their owner wasn't home
But this shows that horses rather flight than fight
Poor horses and poor dogs if the owner trained them right this wouldn't have happened

Thank you for giving a heads up that the dogs end up getting shot, it gave me a chance to skip out early.
Dogs are the same like horses; here is never a bad dog born, only bad and unresponsible owners.
