    Speaking about body language... my horses sometimes seem to act up when other people are around but it’s really my fault because my body language changes and I don’t even realize I’m doing it and they get confused. So I have to be aware and make sure I’m giving them clear signals.

    Excellent video, Rick.
    I remember learning about that Visual Cliff experiment. Some babies even accidentally backed onto the plexiglass over the "deep" side, but even though they'd already tested it out, they still refused to crawl over the "deep" side once they were looking at it.
    Also, the Visual Cliff experiment was repeated with baby animals. Most mammals were similar to the human babies: they feared falling into the "deep" end. But rats had no problem with the cliff, because they mainly rely on their whiskers instead of their eyesight. And the baby turtles actually *chose* the "deep" side!

You had no base for your argument, I just took it to heart. This kinda gave me a clue... I'll wake up now! ;)

    Great information. It is like my coworker told me that she can finally afford to take her 6 month old puppy to Dog Obedient School to get rid of some bad habits it had. I couldn't help myself and said, You do know that Dog Obedient School is for the human, not the dog, right? She paused a few seconds too long and then said, Oh yeah, I know that. I followed with, Yep, it is the same when you have kids or a spouse. I think I went too far with that one. :-)

    My wife has had horses from childhood; I have never been around horses, only dogs. Now we have four horses and I am trying to figure out horse behavior. (NOT the same as dogs) I feel they see I don't know crap and they do take advantage of me sometimes probably cause I am an animal lover probably too lenient. But I would rather be too easy until I know the correct way of doing things.
    I told my wife that her new mare will purposely move in front of me and stop directly in front of me blocking my way when we are both walking together in a pasture. She thinks I am delusional and said I'm probably misunderstanding her. Today she did it three different times within 30 minutes! My gut feeling is the mare is purposely blocking my way because she is trying to be more dominant than me. It happened three times today and all three times I just walked around her. Now I am thinking this is probably wrong and I should have just kept moving forward and slowly pushing her out of my way.
    If my Doberman was doing this I would simply continue to move forward and I know my dog would move. It just is a little different with a 1,200 lb horse. They are soooo much bigger than me! I am a big guy but they do overwhelm me because they could crush me like a bug! Thanks, 57 year old Horse Newbie!

      lol normal behavior for horses, it could affection could want you to groom or pet, could be showing dominance, could be playing games horses like to play, my horse buddy does that all the time.

      Thanks for reply, good to know your "Buddy" does that to you. I don't feel aggression from her. Maybe she simply wants me to stop and pet her... maybe just attention like you say. Next time she does it, will stop and pet her & try to figure it out... Thanks.

    I used to volunteer at an equine therapy place for special needs children, but I stopped because I saw so much of what I now understand is learned helplessness in their horses (the bad kind). Since the horses learned to ignore so much because of all the inconsistent cues from their special needs riders and handlers alike, the ignorant owners resorted to stud chains, big bits, etc. just to get them to move. Poor horses had such a dulled and tired look in their eyes :(

    • @rattusnorvegicus3801
      @rattusnorvegicus3801 Před 6 lety +2

      I know what you mean.
      It's the same with lesson horses that are kept for beginners. They never know what to expect or what to do as everytime they are ridden its by a completely different person with a different level of skill and very different and sometimes contradictory way of communicating. Some people get scared and pull back when the horse responds to their cue, some people allow the horse to ignore certain cues all together and some people don't hold back when it comes to disciplining a horse that does not respond.
      So that makes the horse very reluctant to do anything at all because he can never be sure if it's the right or wrong thing to do. So what's the solution? Bit burrs, nosebands, tie downs and lunging whips ofcourse. And thats what they do everyday for the next 15 years of their life until they're crippled. What a hopelessly bleak existence.

    • @amandak3198
      @amandak3198 Před 4 lety

      That's too bad that their program was like that. We have a couple in our area and allegedly they give the horses breaks from therapy and also refreshers in training, which is good if they actually do that.

    Even though Buddy has been tied to many things that he can't drag around, I bet you dollars to doughnuts that if you tied him to a cheap lawn chair, it wont take him long to figure out he can move it because Buddy has to test everything! He's smart. "Can I move this or not? Can I get out of this, or not?"

    Love this one! Right up my alley! I’ll be looking for more like this if I can find them. Lol there is so much in dog psychology that make it so easy to train them. People don’t understand that it’s never the dogs problem it’s always the human doesn’t understand what it’s asking the dog to do. As it seems to be with horses as well I’m finding out.
    The human is the only animal that tries to change what it does or how other humans view it. It’s the only animal that will lie or cheat or steal to change its appearance to other humans or animals to get away with whatever it is that it thinks will put it above the other human or animal. It’s the only animal that has pride in taking advantage over its own kind.
