Real Madrid and Barcelona have a challenger for the title. And it’s not one of the usual contenders. Girona, a team with a stadium capacity of 14,500 and a wage budget a fraction of Real Madrids have led La Liga for the majority of the season.
But how are they doing it? Seb Stafford-Bloor explains, Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

now finally we can say that barcelona is not the best catalonian football team.
I want what you're smoking
Well this season yes. But all time definitely no
@@jasonterla273 duh
@@jasonterla273🤓
Oh, yes of course, despite Barcelona having 27 la liga titles, 5 champions leagues and being one of the best clubs of all time, girona having just one insane season means they're now a bigger club than Barcelona. I completely agree with you
I would love to see a deep dive on Barcelona's financial problems and how this effects the next 10, 20 years. Love your videos btw
I believe they already did a video like that
They'll join the super league and get enough to avoid them.
@@somethinglikethat2176Without premier league teams, I dont see Super League getting financially successful.
Visited Girona last year. Absolutely colorful and beautiful city. I thought I was going crazy when I visited the gothic church no one believed me it was in GOT.

lies.... All of it lies...
What happend with Joe Devine and his smooth silky voice?
Really not a fan of this new style of Tifo videos. This one seems more like an advert for CFG, and the one on Jim Radcliffe was similar.
I think it's the opposite. I see a lot of folks online who discredit what Girona has done so far this year because of their association with CFG. I think this video shows that their success isn't due to exorbitant spending, but rather good team building, smart business, and a manager with a vision and heart. @@lmilne2635
I think Athletic cutting down on their budget. They even renamed Tifo IRL to Athletic

What an underdog story for City Football Group!!
yep, all these people yapping about an underdog and happy about someone else winning it... Barca and Real are fan owned clubs, big as they are, they're real football clubs, not franchises purchased overnight by oil money
@@nikko8019 you talk as if CFP invested 1 billion euros in girona or something
@@phoenicc935 buying players isn't the only thing that comes from CFG, there is world class recruiting and scouting. Whilst not wages or transfer fees this is something they never would've afforded without CFG. You're on a TIFO channel, surely you know enough about football that buying and paying players isn't the only thing that runs a club
@@nikko8019 Well that's the first time I hear someone say that Real Madrid is a real football club. Whether or not it is a fan owned club, there's really no difference in Girona having CFG money to invest, and Real Madrid receiving donations from shady sources. And talking about oil money, have you ever seen the shirt sponsor of Real?
@@nikko8019Exactly this, I'd take Barca or better yet Real to win every day, they aren't oil clubs and Real has been run brilliantly the past 10+ years. They're fan owned. It's not a coincidence that the team owned by CFG is suddenly doing well.
I WAS enjoying watching Girona, now that I know its City Football Group its no longer a charming underdog story
And just like that, their main man Savio is joining Man City this summer. Who would've thought, eh?
@@Chip_Fuse thought they were after Olise
yeah can’t believe people are comparing them to like Leicester 🤦
An yet it's ok for Real Madrid to keep dominating under the influence of the Spanish government 😂. Girona's salary limit is almost 700 millions euros less, and yet it's an issue because they're 2nd somehow. You'd think they'd have spent billions like Real Madrid and Barcelona. Crazy how the entitlement works amongst clubs like United, Liverpool and Real Madrid. Anybody else dare's to join them and it becomes an issue. Football would be so boring just watching those 3 all the time. Bring on more new teams I say. F*** RM, United and Liverpool.
@@Mikejames1080 Exactly, it baffles me how people are undermining the fact that Girona was a title contender with about 700 mil less to spend. Even if they're from CFG, the job of the manager/players/board has been outstanding and should not be underestimated like this
Jon is doing an amazing work at the athletic but the animated videos are just not the same when they aren't narrated by Joe
Can't beat that voice.
As Chelsea fan looking girona players costing 13 million euros combined 😢they are title contenders and here we are costing more than 1billion euros yet we are nothing compared to girona 💔💔🤦♂️
And yet City are the issue yet again 🙄
As an EPL fan, it's refreshing once again to watch an entertaining Laliga race with an underdog in the running. Thanks to Atletico Madrid for fishing out 3 points to Girona and denying Madrid 2 points in this race
girona misses out on the chance to remain tied at the top, unfortunately
🥱🥱🥱🥱
@@theotilton4008Even if girona finishes top 4 or frustrates Madrid till match day 30, they will have incredible season. Unlike Leicester season where all teams except Tottenham were bad, in La Liga Atlético and Barcelona aren’t particularly that bad or Real Madrid is playing poorly. Sadly all top players will go to city after this season
@ashutoshmalliick9532 I don't think city will sign too many players as they already have a really strong squad. I'd like Real to sign Dovbyk over Mbappe tbh, he'd be much cheaper, less annoying, doesn't have a gold digger mum and is overall more likeable.
@@ashutoshmallick9532they could get loaned back as they are part of city group
They forgot to mention the greatest defender to ever live Eric Garcia
When the world thinks of you as a beggar but you probably are the richest team in the League. 😂😂😂
A video about Stade Brestois's run right now in Ligue 1 could be cool they were 1st in the beginning of the season and are still 3rd rn
I really really want Valencia to be back at nreaking backs of the top teams like they used to do...
Laliga should be a 6 team fight just EPL..
Maybe not 6 teams but Valencia should definitely join Atletico, Real and Barca as regulars in the title fight.
Bilbao and Real Sociedad have taken that place
The EPL isn't a 6 team fight, City is winning the league almost every season and Liverpool has been the only real competition over the last 5 years. Arsenal is having their first good season in the last 8 years or so, United and Chelsea are struggling to qualify for European football and Tottenham is Tottenham...
Looking at the current top 6"
Liverpool - yep, right in the hunt.
Arsenal - we'll see. Won 3 of their final 9 games last season, including a win on the last day when the league was long dead.
Man City - nearly untouchable, favourites again. Games in hand mean they're probably top.
Aston Villa - I've got as much chance of winning the league as they do. Come on.
Spurs - see Aston Villa
Man Utd - Nurse! He's off his meds again!
EPL, a 6 team fight? Brother, Man City have turned it into a farmer's league. You're falling prey to whatever they're telling you at Sky Sports.
Well in today's world football has evolved from being purely a sport but a business model. Globalisation has enabled The CFG to tap into unknown markets by diversifying their brand. So with feeder clubs it allows for recruitment and investment and also attract global partners to their portfolio. I do believe its the future of football, holistically as a commodity in today's capitalist society, so those clubs that don't evolved usually gets left behind
You missed Montevideo City Torque from Uruguay on our list of clubs part of the City football group
I live in France at about a 2 and a half hour ride from Girona, I’ve already visited the city once and I was very surprised to see them being so good this season, especially since I don’t really follow LaLiga
I’m definitely rooting for them
Bicycle or horse?
I have a double for Girona and Leverkusen to win their respective leagues from November , really hope it comes true!
Start picking out the mansion mate
Girona still has difficult fixtures ahahhaa, If Madrid win against them next week then the title race is done and dusted
@@blyki867 And real Madrid won😁😁

At least you still got leverkusen
Wow, this is a surprising story until you realise they are a part of City Octopus.
Yet it's ok for Real Madrid to spend almost 20 times as much.
@@Mikejames1080 Some sort of salary and transfer caps should be implemented. Or removal of paying transfers themselves. The greedy state of football opened the gates for people that don't know what to do with their money and use it for sport washing.
@@Dante-mr3rz and their lies the problem. Teams like Real Madrid and United can spend whatever they want, but as soon as another club dare's to spend or to try and win a title, it becomes "sports washing".
@@Dante-mr3rz and they've already created FFP for you aswell, which funnily enough doesn't apply to teams like United or Real Madrid. I give up! 🤦♂️
@@Mikejames1080 Don't bother trying to argue with someone like this. They are just jealous of a well run group and club. They ignore the fact that other clubs spend as much and have oil money sponsors because those clubs just aren't as good as City. All pure jealousy
Can't believe Leicester got relegated last season
Awful keeper and not properly investing in the squad. Plus the owners had some money issues I believe. They are currently cruising through the Championship and should be back next season, if they keep this pace up which they more than likely will.
They will be back
Why, they aren't anything special. There are clubs lower down the league that are bigger than them historically. Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Derby just to name a few. Leicester have no divine right to be in the top flight.
I remember watching Paulo Gazzaniga play for my hometown club Gillingham FC, I had no idea he was playing for Girona!
It sounds like a great story until you hear they’re another city group pawn
Comes down to two things from what I see in their matches. Teamwork and running.
Awesome video and very educational to me as I am primarily a Premier League football fan! Reminds me of Leicester City winning the premier this.
barcelona customers getting ready to abandon ship for Girona🤣🤣
Never
The way some of them are celebrating Girona's victories, you'd think they've done that already.
well definitely they wont transfer to Javier Tebas club Real Madrid, who are getting 3 points each week with controversial ref decisions lol :D their budget is 727 mil and they still with help of refs cant be top of la liga easily.
@@d0m574 that’s a really good point just shows how much their fallen, they have forgotten what made them great
I'm curious why you pronounce the names of teams like Palermo and Troyes correctly, but not PSV
Another Leicester City? Not all; all wishing the Catalans can win the league, but it's a City Group experiment (with a good manager and board). The City Group privileged Girona over Troyes, the French side is under a sport crisis, a red flag for the Spanish club for the future, and another motive for winning the title in this season
Wbat happens if Girona qualify for the champions league, will CFG have to pull either then or City out of it?
Surely they cannot allow 2 clubs with the same owner compete in the same competition?
I recall Peter Johnson being forced to sell shares in either Everton or Tranmere because the football league or the FA deemed it a conflict of interest as there was a very real possibility the two sides could end up playing each other (and they duly did, on a few occasions) but at the time Tranmere were occasionally flirting with Premier League promotion.
Leipzig and Salzburg literally played a UCL match against each other
I do hope that CFG can get Palermo back to the big time in Serie A. The league is better with them and having Sicily represented in the top flight would be incredible.
Nothing at all to do with the 115 charges group. Oops
I feel like there's an effort to detach girona's success from the CFG influence but the entire first team squad are more or less CFG products lmao
Yan Couto and Savinho are on fire 🔥
Girona gives hope for the future of football (with a grain of salt)...it's nice to show that in the absence of money connections can help a football club

At 0:41 why is Barca's sallary cap so much less than Real's
Because Laliga president is a self claimed madrista and they bring weird rules to screw barca due to which our finances are limited forcing us to sign free agents and low cost players.
Losses of revenue during Covid & players on big money contracts.
Might have something to do with how they're always deep in the champions league. Gets them far more revenue than Barca. Barca also need the limits due to all their debts
The teams are allowed to spend only what they can afford when it comes to wage bill. Barcelona's financial situation limits the total player salaries they are allowed to commit to. The rules are the same for all La Liga clubs.
@@culeivan13 keep crying we know Barca screwed themselves. thety wasted huge Money on Flops and even paid some of them (Griezmann) 700k pound weekly wages and Griezmann flopped.he is one of many players, others including Dembele Coutinho Umtiti.

As a fan of football, this is GREAT for the sport. Especially La Liga which is KNOWN for being a 2 man league. Glad to see someone compete for the trophy as well.
On the face of it, seeing another team topping or challenging in Spain seems great.
And it's only on the surface this is good. This is a product of City Football Group, financial loopholes and loan-farming creating the rise of Girona.

Multi Club Ownership is one of the worst things happen to football. It will just create more clusters then ever.
Remind me how many teams the Spanish Royal family have their hands in??
@@tjt5055 My criticism is not about who is doing worse than the other. Because it's not only the City Football group. Abramovich buying several clubs (e.g. Vitesse) and loaning out players while at Chelsea. The whole Red Bull cluster. I could list many more.
This takes the opportunity for a fair competition. Clubs just let a Farm team buy prospects and then sell it to them under value.
And that they can play in the same (european) competition is just crazy.
@@schaffner-816there’s nothing fair about any of it. Hasn’t been for 25 years. There is an upper echelon of clubs that is completely impenetrable unless a club is given significant outside investment.

What happens if city and girona qualify for champions league?
UEFA gets a bribe lmao.
CFG will sell majority shares to one of the chairmen like Pep's brother and get them in.
Then they both play in the champions league. RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg are the precedence. They had to adjust their exact relation and coorporation after an investigation, but were ultimately both allowed to play. I imagine this would be the same here, even though I personally strongly dislike these multi club ownerships.
