Jose Mourinho has been enormously popular at Roma. His Serie A form had been less than ideal, but he had brought the club a European trophy. Yet his sacking in January 2024, amongst Roma fans came as a surprise.
To the outside world, a Mourinho sacking is part of the Portuguese’s legacy. But that wasn’t expected to happen at Roma.
How had he formed such a bond? And why was he dismissed in the end?

Problem with Mou is he is always brought when a Club is at a pickle. So he wins them a trophy, but after that the problems resurface again. So he becomes the obvious scapegoat.
Exactly! It's what I keep saying. Mourinho is still a top manager....but he is playing the game on "hard" mode. He only picks jobs where the clubs haven't won in years and don't have a great project. Just compare it with other top managers.
The problem with him is he is so unlikeable and toxic that as soon as he doesn’t bring success it is very easy to get rid of him because he can offer nothing else other than success. Doesn’t play nice football, doesn’t promote youth and blames everyone other himself. So if he isn’t bringing instant success he has no leg to stand on

He went to Chelsea twice when they assembled a young squad able to fight for title and gave him ton of money to bring even more players. He was one of the reasons (biggest one) that Chelsea ended with Hazard-Oscar-Willian instead of Hazard-KdB-Salah - which would be arguably one of the best offensives in history of football.
He went to Inter, when they won 3 titles in a row and were dominating Serie A and his shopping and insistance of experience was big part of their dominance ending.
He went to Real, when they had Galacticos 2.0 assembled already and who won 2 titles 2 years before he came (i.e. 06-08, he came there at 2010).
He went to MU after they spent over 350mil over previous 2 seasons (and spent another 400mil under him the next 2 seasons). Without moving them to get single PL title.
He went to Spurs, who were consistently in TOP4 and they wanted to move for title. Instead they were out of TOP4 for 2 years under him.
He went to Roma, who were consistently around 6th place to keep them around 6th place.
He literally never went to club, who was failing. You could argue that all CFC, Real and Inter were destined to win, no matter Mourinho. And with teams that were not there, he did not help them to make it.

Can’t see lukaku and Dybala being in a Roma jersey next season. When Abraham comes back he’ll likely want to jump ship as well. The high profile loans will stop flowing in and the still important ageing players like stalling will want out too. No money, relying on a managers reputation to sign free transfers and loans I can see this going very bad for them

Roma desperately needs to rebuild, and that couldn't be done with Mourinho. We must get rid of overpaid old players, and buy new young players. I wonder why he isn't a good league manager anymore. He used that same style of play he uses now when managing Man United and Tottenham hotspur, though his league form started declining at those clubs.

@@diegopilone7036😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I will say, in years and years time, when we look back on his time as a manager and compare him to others around him, we will all say that he was kicked about quite a lot by the game. You think of the big names he went toe to toe with, Fergeson, Wenger, Pep, all managers whose reigns were notable for either a) someone taking a chance on a newcomer because they were talented, b) them going through a bad spell and being given a lot of time and trust and patience, or c) both, and Mourinho never really got that. He had to win the Champions League with Porto for anyone to even notice him.
He learned his trade at Barca, who seemingly never believed in him. He is certainly Chelsea's all time greatest manager, and he came back to the club when they needed him, and they dumped him twice without much thought. He got treated as a hostile force at Real Madrid, and the fans baulked at his audacity for thinking he should be allowed to pick his team, and decide how they play. He won things there too, against Pep Guardiola's Barcelona mind you, and he got chucked out anyway and they were glad to see the back of him. At Man U he was treated as a joke, no more so than when he said that getting to 2nd with them was one of his greatest ever performances as a manager, which, in hindsight, it actually might have been, and they asked him not to slam the door on the way out. We talk about him being combative or his 'us against the world' mentality, but I wonder how different things could have been if 1 of those teams had put their foot down and decided to stick with him.
I was thinking about thst too. Klopp in 7 years only won a premier league, a cl and some(not a lot) cups, yet hes regarded as one of the best managers of the last 10 years(rightly so). Mou won 2 european cups with porto, went toe to toe w sir alex and even went above and beyond that for 2 seasons, won the treble with inter, won la ligas against the best football side of all time and then came back to england and won again. He is very underrated.
@@nickd987 Not only toe to toe with Sir Alex. Man clawed his way against Rafa Benitez and Arsene Wenger, who also in hindsight was as much of a manager as Sir Alex.
If a club ever decided to stick with him, their club wud prolly be burning by the time they part ways. His style has always been scorched earth lol
Because his football is not sustainable, the moment he stops winning his teams look extremely bad winning no sign rejuvenation because of his brand of football.
Klopp wasn't winning titles in his first two seasons but everyone could see the potential of the team.

The fact that the transfer situation made such a big deal within the Roma hierarchy makes the Anthony Taylor controversy even more important. Referees NEED to be held accountable, just as any other person in the World who has a job is. People don't look at the evidence and only go with their bias. The replay even after all these years is still available for people to see. It was a clear robbery. Roma had the match won. Taylor made in incredibly horrible decision and cost Roma the match. Jose had every right to do what he did.
Rather than admit his faults, Taylor complained like a coward. The person who was wronged was eventually sacked.
But you never bring up the clear penalty denied to leverkusen in the semi final. Doesn’t suit your agenda

As a Roma fan, the most significant moment of Mourinho's tenure at Roma and perhaps in the club's modern history was Anthony Taylor's failure to award a clear-cut penalty for Roma in the Europa League final against Sevilla. Everything changed after that. The stakes were just too high -- second European trophy and qualification in UCL. As much as I was tired of the way Mourinho used referees as scapegoats during his time at Roma, it was almost a self-fulfilling prophecy: Taylor and his VAR team made a truly indefensible and inexplicable decision that night.

The "decreto crescita" was not a tax break for soccer teams, it was used as that, but it was a general tax relief measure during and right after the pandemic
AS Roma is not a good team this year, their best players are injured and they're full of has beens and gambles hired for cheap in hope of Jose doing miracles
The sacking of Mourinho might have been an act of courage, but it has been followed by a really low hiring: De Rossi is young and umproven as a coach, but he's an idol at Roma, therefore he signed the cheapest contract in Serie A and no matter how good or bad he does he will always (and rightfully) have the love of all the fans

I hated super league but Italian clubs must need one to counter UEFA constraint and double standards.
You also have to consider the luck factor: Mourinho's Roma would've finished top 4 the previous two seasons on xPts and they are currently 5th on xPts.
In fact, his first season at Roma was notorious by how much the team was underperforming their xG. Mourinho tactics worked, but the players underperformed on the box.
Always an excuse
well, football is a bit more complicated than an expected ... percentage.
yours is a very very one-dimensional approach to analysing a team and their manager.
Many managers would have retired after the 1st or 2nd sacking but Mourinho didn’t! He’s a worrier and one of the greatest managers ever. He defied the odds countless times and a love that he’s a tough manager cus then you see who can perform under pressure and who can’t. He’s also so passionate about his teams and the sport and I always love that. With all this being said I think maybe he has one more good or known club in him before he should take a national team job or retire. But he will always be the special one
0:32 Woooow, this beginning has been so fricking sad, at least if the uproar is loud enough he could accept a return. BUT he must produce ofc
1:31 Ooooohhh thats too sweet, especially from a guy like him. What must happen for such love to come from a place?!
Good video but too short. Was expecting at least an hour
For all who’s saying he’s done at club level & should move on to cups - wait till he proves you wrong like Don Carlo.
Ancelotti was managing Everton 2 yrs ago after failed stints at Bayern & Napoli. Everyone called him “washed”. Now he’s won his 4th CL & gonna win the league this year, and he’s labelled “GOAT”. Doesn’t mean he was not bad at his previous jobs. He was.
But all it takes is a good club with proper structure to win something.
Jose has been on losing projects for the last 7 years starting with United. But he’s still managed to win at every club.
One good project is all it takes. Until then, kids keep drinking the koolaid, those who know the game, be cool!

It's truly sad to see. I hope he is appointed somewhere relevant again soon. I don't want to live in a world where Mourhino is not prowiling around the great leagues of Europe. He will be wasted in Saudi, he needs and deserves his public. Benitez is of that same generation, not as successful but at his peak was one of the best managers around. If Liverpool can't get Xabi Alonso I'd almost be willing to take a risk with Jose..shocking i know but imagine the redemption arc!
No manager knows how to get under peps skin like Jose either. Straight up called him a cheater with inter and Real Madrid, said he’s the only manager that complains the ref makes the right call and the more recent “he can take the ball home with him I’ll take the three points”

Jose IS a great manager. He just isn't the guy like Fergie to stick with a club long-term. He runs on a three-year cycle and then things tend to come to an end. But he has changed the culture and had enormous success at Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Madrid and Roma. I also think he was very good for United with how inept the board was and deluded that the squad was up to standard. And yes he didn't win Madrid a CL title, but that was with peak Barcelona at the top of their powers and he already won 2 with Inter and Porto, both treble seasons. He usually clashes with the board or becomes unhappy because he has strong views and expects to be fully backed. But for a guy who doesn't last long at clubs, he just wins trophies. Over, and over, and over again.
Roma were only a few points off top 4 and had better underlying numbers when they sacked him. Plus their squad is probably 5th-6th best in Italy. It makes zero sense to me.
I never liked Jose even when he came to united but when he left.....I finally understood him and now I have nothing but respect for him
The issue with Jose ultimately comes down to his insistence to play mind games and antagonise his opponents. He very much uses "dark arts" football tactics.
This is why he got 16 touchline bans in Roma, forcing him to watch from the stands, why he's had that issue in almost every club he's ever been in. Why he has been fired more than 5 times now.
He sets up his team in a "us against the world" mentality and while it works, its great but when it stops working, it becomes absolutely horrible.
I feel bad for him but then again, you can't deny that many of his issues are his own fault.
I don't think his galvanizing character or his antics are the problem, they're the symptom.
It all stems from his unwavering insistence of training with conditioning. He will manage his group on a cyclical intensity level, on a crescendo when matches are coming (specially important ones) and nitpick every single tactical possibility on the pitch for said match. And this in turn becomes overbearing for his players (and when we're talking about stars, elite footballers, or "streets wont forget" types, it doesn't usually come out well).
And one of his tools for handling pressure is that he becomes the man carrying the banner, the face of the controversy.
-------
Another point worth being mentioning is how antiquated he feels at times. Not just tactically but also in handling players or interactions with the administration of the clubs he's in.
He'd rather be fired than to accept anything being asked of him.
He's sorta finished sadly, He's gone from winning against a prime barca to Celebrating against the likes if feyenwood
When you look at their team on paper, they should be challenging
At 1:15 you've used a picture of Mourinho with the Europa League that he won with Machester United in 2017, not the Europa Conference League Trophy that he won in 2022
And at 6:22 as well
great video
Mourinho at Roma reminds me of Mike Leach in American college football , a great coach who’s record is lower than his coaching prowess due to enjoyment of rebuilding a team
5:22 Ironic because everyone was saying Chris Smalling revigorated his career and the moment that’s the case he is gone injured 😭😭 Roma can’t catch a break. That Bonny I signing would of been good
honestly the 9th in the league is over exaggerated by the media. The league was super competitive this season among 4th and 10th with only 5 points gap in between them. 2 wins and Roma will shoot back up to 4th at no time. Unfortunately we won't know anymore.
Exactly this. Roma had just played a bunch of hard games having played almost all the top teams in the last 6 weeks and apart from the upcoming game against Inter, they are about to have a much easier run of games which would of no doubt put them back into 4th or 5th.
@@meeeellar Dude they sacked him after he played all the other 19 teams. They played the hard matches after a streak of 5 relegation team matches at the start of the season. Everyone played everyone.
In Italy tranfer balance accounts for less points per game variability than payrolls, moreover, there is colinearity between the two, meaning that you don't even account for transfer balance or that you regularize it to a lesser weight if you want greater accuracy in explainig/predictiong PpG. Mourinho is a hack and that is that!
He so good like he'll win you trophy's but he cant keep the momentum up past 2 years. It would be interesting to see him go into national management
They should of kept supporting Mourinho... He probably would of taken a paycut to stay at Roma longer. I felt as if he wanted to build that team. Two finals back to back is unreal. The Team got better and the problem was the owners didnt support him this season... They should of just let his contract expire at the very least. Totti isn't even a serie A quality manager, what a joke of a move just to save money from the friedkins.
The way you can tell that no one actually thinks the confrence league is a valuable trophy for a club like Roma is that people keep calling it "a european trophy" instead of confrence league.
When a team wins the europa league you refer to it as the europa league, if people win the champions league you refer to it as the champions league. If people have won both then you say european trophies.
I can't wait for a few years when mid table teams keep winning it so people will finally stop talking about the confrence league like it's some massive trophy for a club like Roma
He may not be what he used to be, but Mourinho squeezed out two European finals from a team that spent $15 million over two years on its players. NOBODY is ever going to succeed with empty pockets like that. Roma failed him, not the other way around.
Typical Mourinho sacking in the third season
Jose Mourinho is one of the best managers in the world its sad to see his downfall
The problem with him is he is so unlikeable and toxic that as soon as he doesn’t bring success it is very easy to get rid of him because he can offer nothing else other than success. Doesn’t play nice football, doesn’t promote youth and blames everyone other himself. So if he isn’t bringing instant success he has no leg to stand on
Keep regurgitating the media talking point
I would feel bad about Mourinho being vetoe'd out of signing Bonucci since I have lots of respect for both and they'd make a great duo
BUT, I cant because I'm a Fenerbahçe fan
Mourinho now should focus on national teams. He has the right skill set for it. I just think club management is too much for him now
I am grateful for the results in European Cups, but the Serie A results were disappointing to say the least. This season, we won only one match against the Serie A top 10. The squad is undoubtedly poorly built and some players are not good enough for top 4 but come on, it was possible to do way better, especially given Mourinho's wages. I don't think sacking him will solve all our problems, but I understand the owners' trying to launch a new dynamic while the season can still be saved (+ we played horrible football)
They should've sacked the whole starting XI, not Mourinho.
They are 1 point away from 4th. The league is pretty competitive with 10th place Genoa being 7 points away from 5th Roma
As a Roma fan I do think it would have been better to keep Mourinho until the end of the season, now this season isn't the best but he did keep us in contention to get into the top 4 even while we were in 9th place especially now we are in 5th after our win against Salernitana. The north has always been the football juggernauts and even at our best it would be difficult to keep up with them. It doesn't excuse the poor performances especially against teams that we are equal to or normally better than but expecting Jose to bring us to a Serie A title at this point (while it would be amazing) is a very high expectation. I love De Rossi, but his managerial resume compared to Jose is very worrying since this is his second job at a club that is much bigger and has a lot more pressure than SPAL which he did get relegated and I am very scared this could be the same as when MAN UTD brought in Ole who shocked the system and delivered amazing results at first just to fall flat once the dust settles down.
That's a pic of Mourinho lifting the Europa League after the win with Man U in 2017. Just an observation!
Mou is one of the best in the game period.owner need to communicate to manager they choose.
This man's team got me into football and Roma fandom last season. I knew him as "that guy from the Many Men meme" before catching up on the lore. Mourinho's Giallorossi were an unforgettable 10/10 sports drama filled with idiotic red cards, broken ligaments, and broken dreams. Daje Jose 💛❤
Roma over achieved with Jose. Especially given how low they spent compared to their competition.
Third highest wage bill in the league and 9th how’s that over achieving
@@tevildo45these are delusional jose fans

I still don't understand why won't manage portugal. I mean, I don't think there is a better active portugese manager in the world rn. And besides, mourinho is a tough guy, his mentality is crucial to shape the future of this golden portugese generation of footballers
He will fail there as well.
Could do with the special one at Barry town, don’t fancy going back to the Cymru south
Love Mourinho no matter what
Some really bad journalism here: "The Friedkins indulged Mourinho with €113m in his first summer." Nope.
And then you set it up as a precursor to Roma's financial struggles - which also began FAR BEFORE Mourinho even came.
The truth:
Kumbulla, Ibanez and Reynolds were brought in far earlier as loans with OBLIGATION to buy - that's €45m that has nothing to do with Mourinho.
Vina was brought in only because Spinnazola tore his achilles
Shomurodov was Pinto's transfer for which he took full responsibility (as he did with Vina)
The only ones left - Rui Patricio and Abraham were the only Mourinho's transfers. Patricio was a good buy. Tammy would've been even better as he would've been sold last summer for around 40m - the same amount he was bought for, but he tore his ACL in the last game of the season and ended up being out for a year.
So in 3 years the Friedkins "INDULGED" Mourinho with Tammy Abraham and a €10m goalkeeper.
Also, Roma's wage bill is nothing else than an indication of a "stale" club in regards to transfers.
They just can't move their deadwood. Spinnazola, Karsdsorp, Celik, Tammy (due to injury), Kumbulla and many other players are not interested in leaving Roma and Roma just can't find a club for them. And because of this Roma can't bring in replacements for them - meaning all they have to do is reject the move away from Roma and it will result in them actually playing for Roma - which we see happening.
It's a bit of a paradox, really. But of course, people mention Roma's wage bill as if it is an indication of a strong squad. It's quite the opposite.
They make clickbait, calling them journalists is a misnomer.
As a Roma fan... That missed handball penalty in the UEL final was the cause. Qualifying for the UCL would have given Roma a needed boost to the budget and attracted players during the summer, I really liked Mou and will always be glad for bringing that first European trophy in 2022 (ending a painful 14 year drought of any trophy). This is the first time I hear about how the gvt ended the tax break on coaches and players and now it all makes sense.
Now he's got to wait for Martinez to no not make it out of the Group Stage at the Euros.
I’d like to see pep manage Roma and see how he does with this budget for 2 and half years
The trophies might be further appart but Jose is still one of the most successful managers in football and is available now for anyone willing to give him the chance. Shouldn't be out of work to long.
Roma really said “Leave them before they leave you.” 😂😂😭
Too early for troll comments anyway , I love roma, Jose and tifo. I love football to say the least.❤
If Anthony Taylor actually did his job properly. That's a disgrace, man.
My man was spotted in Barcelona right after tha sack. Now that even Xavi is getting out, can he ever coach Barcelona? Barcelona have a great academy and the special one can ignite Barcelona back. But with his history at real Madrid it may be difficult while he also worked at Barcelona before as a assistant coach.
You would be surprised and disappointed even if he moves to Barca.
Barca would never.
Mou himself said he is a madridista. It wont happen
Can you imagine Barcelona playing mourinho’s boring park the bus style? 😂
That is probably the worst thing for Barca right now.
I wonder what would happen if he was hired by a top-10 team in England, Spain etc and be given the budget of Pep, Ancellotti, Klopp etc. Would he still be able to deliver results and trophies at this level in 2024?

This would’ve been absolutely genius
I think i saw him more in the tribunes on the seats then next to the pitch with the all red cards he got.
