A Premier League football match has never taken place outside of the United Kingdom. But that could be about to change.
A court case in the US may have opened the doors to domestic football games being played outside their home territory.
Adam Crafton explains, illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

And that's why it will happen, particularly if Spain and Italy do it before the EPL, thereby making them the richest leagues in the world and not the EPL and then all of a sudden there's an exodus of talent from England. I know it's fashionable for fans to hate the idea, and fans will fall over themselves to express their anger as a way of proving their fandom, yet the world changes and money talks, so it will probably happen at some point.

as an american myself i’m not fully against the idea because of the way the nfl hosts a couple of games in europe. I don’t think it should be a regular thing to hold games in the states, but hosting 5-10 games a year will help grow the sport in an area where it’s not as popular, similar to what american football is doing. I just want more people here to appreciate the sport and actually get a chance to experience the top flight premier league without having to leave the country.

Here in the US people are fans to these clubs more due to “trends” than the deep connection England citizens have to their city teams (their great grandparent played there, the local restaurant used to sponsor them, etc). You can’t beat sentimental value over money. Personally I don’t have sympathy for these people losing a home game of football.
My issue is the USA seemed to be the country demanding this the most, when the USA doesn’t pay enough TV money to be demanding this. They play 2.7 billion over 8 years. That is less than what Asia and Africa pays for the Premier League, so for them to demand games being played in the USA, they need to paying triple the money they currently pay for their demand to be valid.

The community shield is the most viable match to export to the US. It’s a competitive game, not a friendly like all over games during pre season, so there are actual stakes to play for. It’s also neutrally hosted, so fans in UK won’t feel cheated out of a home game. Finally, Spain & Italy are already hosting their equivalent competition abroad, England can take ideas from them such as reformatting to 2 semi finals and a final between the previous seasons Top 4 or FA Cup finalists and Top 2. This would ultimately appease the global fan market and also generate increased revenue for the English football.

Community Shield is the most viable for sure, but it's also the most pointless from a financial perspective. It's an FA competition for a start, not Premier League. All the revenue and gate receipts are distributed by the FA to charities and community projects, and so there wouldn't be a direct financial benefit to the Premier League or even to English football.
I am personally fine with pimping out the top teams for one or two games to benefit community projects in this country.

League games don't need to played offshore. I can almost be ok with a UCL final or something like that, as there is already precedence for a club competition cup final to be played offshore, it's a one-off game with plenty of hype leading in, and should feature at least one if not two big clubs with global appeal. I'm not saying NFL fans don't support their teams, but it's a different type of connection than with European soccer clubs.

Many of these teams have existed since the mid to late 1800's and have intergenerational support, they've been there for the good times and the bad times. A modern example is Wrexham, the fans have supported the team since 1864 and when the team was about to go bust or couldn't pay the wages the fans took over club and raised money for it to save them and if they didn't have money, they provided volunteer support especially when they were playing in the national league.
They were doing almost anything to save to their local club. And it just so happens Rob and Ryan found a club they wanted to buy and support and Wrexham happen to fit the bill. Now Wrexham is going through a juggernaut type of renaissance with ambitions to get in to the Premier League and I believe they will get there and they have fans all around the world especially the USA, but it was the local fans that kept that club going.

Overseas fans of the PL already get a better deal than domestic ones as there is no 3pm blackout there and all games can be available on one subscription. That is not the case in England.
Admittedly this does come with the caveat of timezone shenanigans

Okay I know Europe is generally more traditional so that alone would cause distain but as pointed out the United States does have it's own league. How can they grow if next week Liverpool visits town? They'll see the MLS as secondary and never fully treated right

You can charge more if it's a game not games when it became games they won't pay much more than local fans.

The only way this happens if when top 6 teams play a smaller team such as sheffield united away. so take city vs sheiffield, which should have been at sheffield home stadium but instead is taking to New York or something, City would be COMPLETLY happy with that as they lose practicaly nothing. But if they think for even a second that any of the top 3 team Arseanl Man City and Liverpool would ever agree to lose a home match against any of themselves to be played in USA or frankly any other place other than their own HOME STADIUM then, usa people are crazy, Those home matches are literally season defining matches No way they can agree to take it away.

It's ridiculous for both parties, really. For English clubs, fans (specifically Home Support) can dramatically affect the result. Apart from Manchester United, whose fans live in London, most teams' fans live fairly locally. Those same fans are also incredibly aware of rising ticket prices atm, and that doesn't factor in any kind of travel or refreshments that may be required. Looking at you, ÂŁ8 Pints at the London Stadium. Fans are not going to want to travel to America to watch their team play, especially when they will have work the day before or after the game. As such, the teams will have to rely on US fanbase, which is fine if you are one of the 'Top 6'. Not so much if you are Luton or Ipswich Town.
On the subject of the teams themselves. As a fan of West Ham, I couldn't care less if Brighton play Brentford, for example. In the same way that I don't really care about any of the regular games in the French League, or the Spanish, or Italian, etc. How can they be so sure that Americans will care about English games and generate that revenue that they think they can achieve? It will need to be big games between big teams. A few years ago, that could have been Manchester United vs Chelsea. Nowadays, that could be Newcastle vs Aston Villa. The beauty of English football is that it is fairly unpredictable and you can't decide which games will be big games months in advance in order to arrange them to be played in a different country.

I don't like it One bit.
Though I do see a compromise.
The league cup needs to start being used as a guinea pig. Most domestic fans don't care too much for it, so changes won't drive as much fury.
Scottish teams want access to the PL market. The PL wants games abroad. We could allow Scottish Leagues into our league cup, have no replays so it's all knockout and have the later stages or the final played abroad (biggest bidder not simply the US).
Wouldn't have to add matches to the calendar if sone right.
This would suit almost everyone involved. And the competition can be ised for all the other experiments they want to have - even if I wish they'd just leave it all alone.

  • @formerlyknownasmousecopp4367

Just like the NFL playing abroad, I think it is logistically a horrible idea especially in a sport run by people that already ask WAY too much of its players. And this is coming from an American!

I thought NFL fans didn’t mind that much. Since we were always made fun of for our sport being almost exclusive to the US, I thought we’d be cool with showcasing it so that we could grow the game outside the US.

May I introduce you to the 2. Bundesliga.
Tickets are dirt cheap, rarely more than 40€, stadiums are usually 80% full.
There's tons of very historic clubs with amazing story lines and history (St. Pauli, Alemannia Aachen, 1860 MĂŒnchen, 1. FCN)
And the atmosphere is mental. Their club could be 12th place, losing 2:0 in the 75th minute and there will still be chants, Ultras jumping and going absolutely mad.
Of course Der Club is the best team, but you're spoiled for choice in second tier German Football.
