Could be. Also when urskek tried purging their evil, their good halves proved to be gentle and kind, but also passive and indecisive. The Skeksis were evil but also capable of decisive action. The deeper message I think is that if you want to achieve anything, you have to accept that this may require hard decisions.

    • @wisdumcube
      @wisdumcube Před 3 měsíci +2

      The reason why the Urkskek failed was arrogance. Their achievements weren't really a point of pride in terms of the story. Yes, sometimes being decisive or even impulsive can have its benefits (especially when the opposition is passive) but ultimately achieving great power leads to delusion and arrogance, especially without love or compassion driving those decisions. They repeatedly made "hard" decisions that were grand and ambitious, but were ultimately selfish or out of lust for power, and that's what led to their corruption and destruction.
      Kira is a good counter-example: she made the hard choice to sacrifice herself to get the crystal to Jen. It illustrates what makes her actions heroic in contrast, since it was decision a made for the sake of Jen and the hope of a better future but not for herself because she knew she would likely die. Her actions were not for a personal need or desire, and therein lies the difference. And this is why the Gelflings were needed in the story: the Urksek even whole lacked traits to bring about positive change, even if they had the knowledge or the wisdom to see where they failed, because their most negative traits would sabotage them. Whereas Gelflings do possess the ability to bring positive change because they have innocence, are willing to answer the call to action, and lacked the arrogant and destructive tendencies of the fallen Urkskek. They are similar to how hobbits are represented in the Lord of the Rings.

      The Skeksis were all violent and selfish without balance, the Mystics were all peace and seflesness without balance. Bringing the crystal back together made everything right. We need some "evil" in us sometimes to balance the good. Sometimes violence is good, sometimes peace is bad.

    Jim Henson managed to combine high fantasy with sensible and down-to-Earth teachings. That's part of the charm of his inventions. You never knew precisely what would happen in a story he told because he would make the consequences of actions almost ruthlessly realistic... up to a point. But the point which Jim Henson would stop at was a lot further into the darkness than most people were willing to go when writing a story which children would experience.
    But Jim's seeming madness had method to it. Remember "Mr. Hooper Died" from Sesame Street? Jim Henson knew that children have to deal with death, just like everyone else. Pets die. Sometimes other family members die, and sometimes friends die.
    Mr. Hooper was the "grandfather" character in Sesame Street. When Will Lee who acted him died unexpectedly, they could have told the children who watched the show that Mr. Hooper had retired and moved away. Instead, they took the bull by the horns and told the children that Mr. Hooper had died, and that being sad and grieving over someone who has died is normal and appropriate.
    At the core of Jim Henson's stories were two principles.:
    1. Honesty. Evil exists. Death exists. Learn to deal with them.
    2. Morals. Oppose evil to the best of your ability. Don't let sadness and death get you down. Choose good over evil. Evil may win the day's battle, but the war is not done.
    Sesame Street died with Jim Henson. There's still a show with that name, but the truth and integrity which had characterised it previously, died with Jim Henson because his influence was gone. Now, the show is just another children's show, pandering to adults and patronising children.
    I think Jim Henson would be very annoyed if he could see what it's become.
    I hope the Netflix show does justice to the movie. I don't hold out a lot of hope, but perhaps someone with the same honesty and integrity as Jim Henson has control of it. One lives in hope.

      OMG, FINALLY THANK YOU! SOMEONE gets me! Yes, definitely, it DEFINITELY died once Jim did, I thought I was the only one who thought the older ones were way better, the older Jim Henson ones had so much more quality and charm you really don’t see in the new ones, the characters and segments were better, (Big Bird, Oscar, Grover, Ernie, Bert, Praire Dawn Cookie Monster, Zoe, Rosita and Elmo (Maria, Gordon, Miles, Mr. Hooper, Gabby, etc. were the classic characters EVERYONE loved, classic singers and actors that actually HAD talent, etc. Years later after watching it on VHS as a kid, about last year, I decided to watch it again for nostalgia just for a few minutes and WOW, (EVERYTHING you said was 100%, it’s terrible what it became long since then… It REALLY DID change for the worst and is NOTHING like how it once was, I was honestly SHOCKED at what I was seeing because I was so used to the older better Henson era ones on VHS.. It’s honestly REALLY sad what it’s turned into: The classic characters (like Big Bird, Elmo, Oscar, etc. have newer voices and everything where it barely even sounds like them and they BARELY even appear anymore just for the sake of new characters people barely will remember down the road unlike them,) Gordon, Miles, Maria, and Gabby are basically just GONE with no explanation, (does anyone even know whatever happened to them anyways? They just disappeared…) there’s phones and technology added to it now, stupid modern day celebrities on it that have 0 talent and only really appear for money, just UGH. It really isn’t the same anymore like it once was, it’s like SpongeBob, they basically ran everything about the show and it’s characters into the ground years after the entire show already went dead for the sake of money when it should of ended YEARS ago, once Jim died, both that and the Muppets ended for me, they should of ended it and the Muppets, PERIOD.

It's just you think of Muppets as harmless maybe because of Sesame Street, only characters like Gonzo did death defying stunts. It's why kids are bought pets like fish or hamsters it teaches them, to ask there parents the big questions. • @darkmagic616
    @darkmagic616 Před 5 lety +9

    I really hate to be nit picky (and I expect and accept any ni-picking if I get anything wrong here)
    The Urskeks didn't split because the Crystal was splintered. Aughra's son (whose name eludes me) is really to blame. He had never trusted the Urskeks and shortly before the second conjuction he had heard one of the Urskeks singing a song from their own world. He then went on the have a Gelfling play the song as the cunjuction was occuring, angering that Urskek. It was that Urskek's anger at hearing another play the song that caused them all to split. The splintering of the Crystal came within hours after that, as the Skesis and Mystics awoke, the Mystics just kind of wandered off. However the Skeksis were frightened and agressive. A good number of Skeksis died during this moment as they were simply killing eachother left and right, it was during this fighting that one of the Skeksis had hit the Crystal causing it to break.
    Of course the movie does set it up as if the splintering of the Crystal was the direct cause of the Urskeks splitting. So it is a 100% acceptable stance. Also everything I talked about come from one of the graphic novels released about two decades after, so again fair enough.

    Some of your comments weren't accurate. You clearly haven't read the origin story published as graphic novels. The UrSkeks were NOT trying to purify themselves. They were trying to return home!!!! They were trying to get back to the dimension they had been exiled from. It is revealed to Aughra's son Raunip that one of the UrSkeks ruined their return because he was nurturing darknes, which caused them all to be rejected by the Crystal. They couldn't return to their home dimension, and were instead sundered in two. If you're going to make videos, please research properly!!
