I am still salty with netflix for canceling the show, it was my favorite show on the platform. I know it wasn't as succesful as it could've been, but they really should have give it at least a chance of two seasons with heavier marketing. It didn't have a chance to grow an audience, I mean it took me some months to watch it and I loved it. It was critically acclaimed and no doubt a lot of new people would have joined for the second season hearing that this highly rated show was getting more episodes. Besides... a lot of money was already invested in making all of the puppets, props and sets. I highly recommend watching the docummentary on the making on the show just to get your mind blown with the incredible amount of work that it took.

No series gets settled in with audiences or finds it's stride in just one season I fear there'll be fewer decent series with production companies that are more focused on more immediate audience response.

    • @diegog1853
      @diegog1853 Před 2 lety +14

@@GafftheHorse Yes I agree... I mean by the time I got to the show, the trial period had already passed for it to be cancelled, which was revealed to be just a couple of months. By the time it got all the recognitions and accolades that promoted the show, it was already cancelled.
I mean really ok... let us say that they do want to cancel it no matter what, I still think they should have had a second season just to use all the money they invested and to wrap up the story with some notice from netflix, maybe even with a reduced budget or with fewer episodes.
Now netflix is struggling to keep subscribers because they lack meaningful content.
I really really hope they bring it back, or that the jim henson company secures funding from some other place to finish up the story. Get it off from netflix if they need to, this is the only tv show where i would honestly just buy the blurays if it is not available on netflix.

It has been a problem for decades now, that shows get cancelled before they find their footing - yes, the stations want to make money and all, but I think pre 95 there was a lot more leway.
And with streaming it only got worse, cancelling shows before a season is complete.

I think that's going a bit far. I love the MCU and it's absolutely true that all different kinds of movies have their place. You don't HAVE to put down something else just to try and make your point or your favorite media look better, you know. So, no, you're being very unfair. The Dark Crystal is absolutely fantastic, still holds up brilliantly today.... But audiences are ALSO sometimes in the mood to watch Barbie, The Super Mario Bros Movie, and Deadpool & Wolverine, and it's not fair of you to be negatively judging them for that. Everything deserves the chance to appeal to and resonate with the audience those things are for without having them insulted by an elitist.

The Italian dub actually has the Skeksis shout "Haakskeekah", yet the rest of the dialogue is in Italian. It's almost as if the dub artists wanted to pay tribute to the original version.
EDIT: Yet more clues. The Italian dub has skekSil say to Jen that the prophecy was what caused "Gelfling slaughter", a line taken directly from the workprint rather than the theatrical cut, where it was sanitised to "all this trouble". Furthermore, when skekOk sees the Mystics march into the castle, he shrieks "Oh no, not urZah!", a name that's never heard in the theatrical cut.

You think they somehow got a cut where they didn't remove that line?

@@ginogatash4030 I think what happened was that there was a genuine desire to honour the workprint version, because the "haakskeekah" you hear is from the Italian voice actors, not an undubbed line.
Also, when the Chamberlain talks to Kira and Jen at the Gelfling ruins, he straight up says "Prophecy caused gelfling slaughter", a line translated directly from the original workprint. In the English theatrical cut, he says the much less harsh "Prophecy caused all this trouble".

What I loved about this film(Dark Crystal being my 3rd fav franchise out of 10) is one of the few dark aspects you can have with fantasy. It came at a time when not even thing that was considered adult or conventional for all audiences to watch didn't hinder a runaway imagination, this movie didn't require celebrities voice talents, annoying side kicks, or songs written to be implanted in your mind 24/7. Dark Crystal literally and visually take you to "Another world, another time, in the age wonder" An analogy to the late 70s to 2000s when fantasy and art could be taking and enjoyed not forced to be best of the year like todays media. Childrens entertainment at the time didn't focus on censoring rather experiencing.

A complete work of art with so beautiful story, loveable characters, even the bad ones (i worship Chamberlain and Skexis in general).
Then i found out the movie. And i was so full of joy. What a masterpiece! I am very frustrated with the fact Netflix cancelled these series. I was looking forward to see again Gelflings, Skexis in new stories, but when money talks.... What an incredibly genius, smart, beautifull piece of art!

I only discovered this film three years ago, right before "Age of Resistance" was even announced, and fell in love with it and the world of Thra immediately. The story is pretty darn bleak (the Skeksis nearly killing the entire Gelfling population a century before, the trial by stone, Kira getting stabbed) and I've found some fascination regarding the logistics of what comes before and after it. ("Age of Resistance" ended on a triumphant military victory, but we all know that can't last. Not to mention just what are Jen and Kira supposed to do with themselves after restoring the Crystal and sending the urSkeks packing? The proposed "Power" sequel/comic has hundreds of Gelfling running amok ala "AoR," which would imply J&K, ahem, "boinking," which just seems weird to me; they're practically first cousins, for Aughra's sake!) In the abscence of any significant Thra-related news, I'll happily tune in to you for enough illumination to light the triple suns. I grew up with the original movie and it definitely imprinted into my mind and still sparks a wonder about what this world is like. I would be so happy if the series got picked up again someday.

Like it wasn't already "dark" enough? Lol.
Seriously though, I grew up on this stuff, have introduced it to my kids and now they love it too!

Good stuff. I agree with you that the film is better for the changes made. Henson buying the film in order to retool it also allowed Universal to move the film out of its planned summer release slot.
A browse through contemporary newspapers at the end of 1981/early 1982 noted that the film was at one point supposed to open at the end of May (Memorial Day weekend here in the US), which would have meant that it ran up against ET in its third weekend and likely box office failure. (And if given the choice between Spielberg and Henson, Universal definitely picks Spielberg.)
Instead, it opens at Christmastime and Universal gives it a full marketing push with 70mm prints and the works, allowing it to break even financially in theaters before its eventual success on home media.

Now, the element of the movie that hasn't yet been released but is known to exist is Trevor Jones' complete score. While the soundtrack album and the film's music and effects track have been officially released, Jones has yet to allow any of the many boutique soundtrack labels access to the music masters - they've asked numerous times, believe me! - which he's held the rights to for 40 years.
So there's at least one more piece of lost Dark Crystal media out there to be discovered...

Uuuuhhhhh, wasn't it originally going to be called "The Dark Chrysalis", but Froud misheard Henson and drew up the crystal? It's in the special features to the DVD of the movie. Henson liked the crystal idea so much he changed the story.

7:50 Supposedly for 2 years a (then) 31yo Mr Christopher Orgeron worked on piecing together the allegedly 'darker version' and uploaded it to YT in as far back of (at least) December 2013 - And YT took it down 27 January 2014 at the request of the Jim Henson Company.

I got to watch it thanks to an old friend letting me know it was there: quality issues and all, it was truly amazing! Sadly it did get taken down on petition like you well said.
I believe my friend still owns a downloaded copy of that re-ensembled version!

The material would surely be taken down immediately if it did get reuploaded to YT though, so I've no idea what the possibilities are. However, if there's any manner to share that cut, I'd try to let you know.
