SkekMal demonstrated, in addition to their incomparable magic and stranglehold over life, how physically intimidating and violent the Skeksis truly were; The Hunter is practically an incarnation of this, a relentless juggernaut that will never abandon the chase for his quarry.
Something about the way the Hunter moves is just terrifying. I think it's because the skeksis tend to move in a slower fashion (probably due to the weight of the puppets), they can gesture and look around quickly, but they never run. Hunter moves way faster than something his size should move and it's deeply unsettling. Doesn't help how in the bits where he's CG instead of a puppet he's jumping and climbing through the trees like a goddamn xenomorph.
I thinks it’s also cause you can see his legs. Since the other skeksis wear gowns, they kinda almost glide along. So not only does Skekmal move faster, but you can SEE him move
I know. I don't think I'll ever forgive Netflix for cancelling this masterpiece of a show. What's even more sad is that they've done that lots of times: continuing bad shows but cancelling good ones like this. I don't even have words, I was so angry they cancelled AOR.

Definitely my favorite SkekSis. Like The Garthim. He reminds me of a Kaiju being an actor in a suit with an animatronic face and for his monstrous Personality.
I feel bad for skekMal. Was he even in the loop about the Skeksis draining the gelfling? After all, the whole reason he was chasing after Rian was because he was under the impression from skekSil that he was spreading lies and slandering the Skeksis. It seems like he was just trying to uphold the honor of his kin. skekSil didn’t try to grab and drink the vial of Mira’s essence until after he was gone. We never saw him drink any until he was wounded and he wasn’t even cognizant of it. He’s no angel, but I’m inclined to think he abides by a personal code of ethics and by the lifestyle he lives, has a certain respect for nature and Thra by extension, would he even have approved of what the other Skeksis were doing? At the very least he’d be chaffed about being lied to about the whole situation. But if he wouldn’t have been, then why would skekSil withhold the truth at all?
It's an interesting phenomenon, too, that skekMal managed to maintain his vitality without attending the crystal ceremonies that kept the other skeksis alive. Which implies that his lifestyle mostly staved off the decay the rest of them suffered from. Mostly, since he's still visibly warped compared to the art of how the skeksis initially looked, but he's maintained his strength/agility and the use of all four arms. So he definitely lived by a rigid code of some sort, whether or not it had to do with ethics, and one that kept him more in tune with Thra -- since he didn't rely on stealing Thra's lifeforce through the crystal, but was able to exist individually instead.
I mean it would make sense considering he’s one of the few Skeksis to live a life outside the castle and the same can be said for fewer like SkekSa the Mariner in regards to how their bodies changed over time.
If i remember the extra material about the original move implied that essence was more about the fear of death and what would become of the Skeksis if/when they died. SkekMal for better or worse was rather simple minded and he knew it "when will the rest of you learn only the Hunter matters", so unless SkekMal learned his life would eventually come to and end and essence was the only way to avoid it then i doubt they would have cared.
I still remember seeing the original Dark Crystal, and then seeing this in action? It really shows how far the Skeksis have fallen, and how dangerous thet must have been in their prime.
One thing I LOVE about this character are his foot steps. Most other Skeksis, kinda just shuffle around. But with SkekMal, each of his footfalls is an audible, purposeful "THUD". It really emphasizes his power and force of will, compared to the other Skeksis.
Come to think of it the skesis were very similar to the uppermoons from kny but when you think about bc the skesis were absorbing literally life essence shouldnt the skesis also be like skekmal too it would make sense really
That was kind of the point really. While SkekMal was always the mightiest of them, all Skeksi were supposedly once capable of great physical prowess, but centuries of sedentary hedonism had caused them to wither away. SkekMal on the other hand was constantly pushing himself in his endless search for ever more challenging prey.
@justflex6745 hmm true no argument there but you can agree the skesis are scarily similar to demons from kny but the thing is what if the hunter drank essence everyday while staying fit and more and say that's a recipe for disaster meaning if skekmal did he would have been 10x strong than he would be even if he dranked augrah essence it would still be scary imagine him coming after a gelflin that on the other side of the world and he just got there less than day that's truly terrifying
In the Young Adult Novels, SkekMal was a legend among the GelfLing. They didn’t know what he was. GelfLing parents would scare their children by telling them of SkekMal so they would behave. Many assumed he was an evil spirit. He is said to have fought Jara Jen and he murdered Kylan’s parents. SkekMal went by many names such as Four Arms or simply The Hunter.
Much other people suggested The Hunter was one of the few skeksis who retained a great amount of their so called peak natural form. I wonder how this one was raised to become what he was
Actually maintaining an active lifestyle in nature instead of lazing about the castle all the time, doing his own work instead of having others do it for him, he doesn't even need to use the crystal to maintain himself.
The swordplay in some of these scenes is INCREDIBLE! Let's not forget, with the exception of a few CGI moments, these are puppets! But Rian and his father facing Skek-Mal together is truly riveting, and the funny thing is we don't really see the swings, for the most part, we see the swords connect.
