Shani will soon celebrate her Bat Mitzvah. She grew up in a religious community in Gush Etzion and always felt like an outsider. Donna, her mother, a loud, open American/Moroccan without inhibitions, doesn't follow the social norms. It opens on the preparations Donna is making for the party in their garden. As the date gets closer, Shani is anxious and fears that things are getting out of control, since it coincides with Purim, the holiday of blurred borders.

Good film, it prompted me to read the story of Esther and the origins of Pur-im. She saved the Jewish people of Persia not just bc of her beauty, but also thanks to her intelligence, charm, diplomacy, and most importantly her Bravery. There are very few women mentioned by name in the Bible, versus the countless stories that focus on men. I wonder how human culture would have evolved differently, if ancient chroniclers had told more stories of great women. But then that would have required some of those chroniclers to have been women.
