- This year, I went back to New York and revisited Rabbi Yoni Katz. He welcomed me enthusiastically into his home to meet the family and show me what it takes to maintain and Jewish home.
I also met with Rivky, Yoni's wife who also welcomes people from outside the community on to tours around the neighbourhood. Rivky tells me about how Hasidic Jews meet their partners and the role of motherhood in the religion. She talked about the yearning of a woman holding the family together.
Brocha, Rivky's mother, takes us to her favourite room of the house, The Kosher Kitchen, and tells us what makes food 'Kosher'.

Rabbi Yoni Katz takes us on a journey around his Crown Heights, an area in Brooklyn know for both the growing Hasidic community and their newer hipster locals. Rabbi Yoni has chosen a path to "Unite the Beards", taking anyone who is interested on a guided tour around this often seen as closed part of the neighbourhood.
Rabbi Yoni Katz wants to show the true life and character of this neighbourhood and to bring the communities living there closer. On the tour we were taken to the main synagogue 770 Eastern Parkway as well as to local homes and the main streets, interviewing as we went. The tours are run by himself and his wife and teach the customs and traditions to anyone who wishes to join them to learn about their neighbours.

I was in Brooklyn dealing with the tragedy of my brother’s suicide. I walked from my hotel to the ME’s office and was a mess. I somehow walked through Crown Heights and will never forget the kindness of this community. Strangers on the street could look at me and see the pain and they treated me beautifully. A man on the street asked me if he could help; I asked if there was a coffee shop nearby and he looked right in my eyes and said something about God granting me peace. Another lady in a bakery looked at me and motioned me to go ahead even though she was busy getting shopping done before sundown. She asked me if I was OK and I couldn’t even speak. Many other examples but this was in 2015 and I will never forget these strangers or the feeling I got walking through their neighborhood and trust me. It was so obvious I was not one of them yet…they saw, not a messed up, middle aged Irish southern Lutheran but a human lost and in pain. I want to one day go back and just walk through there again.

Just last week my grandsons girlfriend split up with him ! He was walking the streets of Leicestershire until a Sikh noticed him . He asked my grandson what was the matter and sat outside with him for two hours, comforting him and giving advice!

The sadness that invades me when I stop to consider the similarities of Islam and Judaism. So many similar values. Truly if two religions should coexist in harmony, it is those two. As a person who was born a Catholic, but who is now a humanist, I utterly respect both religions. Treat each other as we wish to be treated, and the rest should take care of itself. The difference between Chabad and me is the same as between Evangelical Christians and me. They are both sects and 'need to do', in order do be 'holy'. They repeat what their leaders tell them to do and they can't form their own opinion. I don't have to do anything at all. I just am. God doesn't want us 'to do'. He wants us 'to be'.

I am a wanderer in the realm of faith. I have never found my home. Here I am now, old and used up, and I wonder if this faith would even have any use for me? I can't give much anymore, I don't have a lot of energy physically, but I am still hungry to find thst mythical home.
@@NinjaGrrrl7734 Read the Bible. They go by the Torah or the 1st five books of the Bible. I guess they call them the first five books of Moses since he's the one that wrote them. As you know, Christians go by the teaching of Jesus so you could read the book of John in the New Testament and it will tell you all about Jesus and the work he did on the cross and why.
Find a version you can understand such as the New King James version. Ask God to help you, he will!

When the woman said, "marriage is not a union, but a reunion. It's bringing back two parts that were one back together." ..... the tone of her voice and her smile, that just touched me.
What really strikes me is how Jews can come across as insular but give them respect and take an interest and they open up with endless love and explanations like in this video

I cut grass for a jewish family once. They were so kind. I was doing them a favor but cutting their grass, and they gave me a Torah as a gift. I still have it. I often read it when i want to go back to the Old Testament

I’m a new mom and hearing her speak about the role of a mother was so encouraging. Her words were comforting.
I am a Catholic. This lady's video comments should be viewed by every couple at required premarital counseling in the Catholic Church. She should be a featured speaker at marriage workshops. The description this lovely Jewish wife gave for marriage went straight to my soul. I am a Christian, but was just as blessed by God to give me my precious husband. I knew I would marry him INSTANTLY...I was just 13 yrs old, and he was an older man of 14 yrs old. We are coming up to our 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary on February 12 and I still "yearn for him" every second of every day! I knew he was my husband instantly and it is a second when time stands still and God's still small voice speaks to my soul and confirms my yearning. We were just 16 yrs old when we married. The funny thing is, he is an Italian from Brooklyn and his mother told him just after we met and I had to leave, on the same day " John that girl has it for you and you have it for her. There goes your wife" We have never looked back and cannot be without each other. May we die in each other's arms if it pleases God. It is so difficult to try and explain the soul yearning to others. She has done it better than anyone I ever heard. You have a lovely family and may God continue to Bless you.

I also met my husband when we were both teenagers. There was an instant draw and connection very quickly thereafter that is still here between us.

I'm also Jewish (American-Israeli) and while on the surface thier life seems to be all roses, I can assure you that one day, when one of those 8 children tells their parents they are in love with a Black person, or a Christian or that they are gay or lesbian or that they want to go to college and study for a higher degree or that they don't want to do a shudduk and get married at 18 or whatever the case is, the entire family will likely turn thier backs on them and treat them like they are dead. And how do I know this? I've seen it in my own family. Not so nice ....
Also your wife is wonderfully eloquent. She’s able to speak of these big life events as if they’re the simplest things. A natural orator…What a woman.
I noticed that, too. She certainly has a way with words. And to think that English is not her mother tongue! She would have been brought up in childhood speaking Yiddish. She speaks English better and more beautifully than many native speakers of the language.

The wonderful people at Chabad "found" me some years ago and encouraged me to return to and participate in my local Jewish community, which just so happened to be Chabad at that point in my life. This was in a capital city located in South East Asia. My many conversations with Chabadniks left me with the distinct impression that Yiddish was the lingua franca of day-to-day communication within the community, with English or whatever " local" language learned as an add-on means of communication. There is such a prayer but it is relation to the fact that men are obligated in more mitzvos. Women are exempt precisely because their role is viewed as crucial to the continuation of the Jewish nation. However since every mitzvah is precious the men stare their gratitude for the opportunity to do the extra mitzvos. They don’t say thank you for making me a man because that would imply that just by being a man they have a greater value
I am a Muslim and I really liked the way the wife explained what we felt when she met her husband. So much serenity and love. I liked the togetherness of this family and this what family is all about with he ups and downs.

I'm a nurse. Ìn the 90's i had a private duty case ìn New Square in Rockland County in NY. My patient was a Hasidic baby girl with spina bifida. It was a Friday night and in the morning i met the family. The parents were very nice and polite. The children were adorable. The house and the family were çlean and well cared for.
I love and respect my Jewish brothers and sisters. There is no room for antisemitism or hate of any kind.
Years later, ive often wondered how my fprmer patient is doing. 🙏 ❤

My cousin converted to Orthodox Judaism after marrying. She is fortunate to have two kitchens, a larger and a smaller one to help her keep kosher. Sadly, her husband passed a few years ago but she is committed to her Jewish faith and continues to show her grandchildren the way. Loved seeing this video - reminds me of my cousin and her family whom I dearly love.

They are good people. You will never hear about an Orthodox person committing a crime. Their families are very close. They work and they obey the laws of God.

Yeah, the "yearning" thing was a little over the top for me. I see it as limiting one's options, esp. for women. I think what I appreciate most is the caring attitude toward everyone and the sense of community.
Motherhood is not valued in the secular world in this way any longer, so it's clear that in a culture where it is valued and an honor, there is much more if a yearning for it

I think a lot of this comes down to how you were raised. She is happy with the choices she made in her life and clearly reflected a lot on what she wanted, so that’s good.

I love her thinking about motherhood being the holy work. Even though I'm a southern Baptist I feel exactly how she feels about motherhood being a blessing and how important raising the next generation is.
I grew up in Bed-Stuy and my father would take us to the Jewish markets to get herring, smoked white fish, strudel. They always treated him like family. I LOVE the Jewish people 💙! @@marcazim4326 Strudel and many other foods known in the US to be jewish aren't jewish but were adopted from the Country they originate from.
Many German Jews living in Germany are still surprised whenever they first visited the US, especially NYC and Jewish Food Stores there and saw so many Traditional German Foods and later talking to American Ashkenazi Jews realising many of them had no idea a lot of the Foods they think are Jewish are actually German, Polish, Hungarian originally etc.

I'm catholic. i remember when we have a sweet elderly Rabi came to my church school. I was 8 years old. because our teacher want to teach us, there other Regions out there then Christian/Catholic. I learn all about the kosher, because I ask him. why they can't eat Pig and shell fish? when she talk about Kosher ways. it remind of the Rabi telling us the same thing. he made it fun for us to learn about the Jewish community . he told us its was ok to laugh about the whole 2 stoves. 2 stinks and other Kosher stuff. he jokes about it. he knew, this whole thing was very new to us. you got sweet family there

Mrs.Vernon here. I just came across your youtube. This was a great blessing. I don't belong to any religious organization but I do study Tanakh faithfully and try my best to keep, guard and fulfill it. This video is a tremendous blessing to me. Your wife spoke exactly how I feel in my heart. I, too, am the mother to eight children. Four sons and four daughters. I pray daily for them and my husband. Although my husband does not practice my faith he has no problem with me following Tanakh. I keep the feasts and eat kosher. I have no fellowship but Yahweh The Most High sustains me. When I met my husband (I was not Torah keeper) I knew in my heart he was the one. He asked me to marry him one month after we met and were married six months later. Thank you very much for this video it has blessed me greatly. I feel as if I came to your home you would accept me as a sister. I have subscribed and look forward to more. Thank you very much.

I see myself as a modern independent woman with traditional values. I wouldn’t imagine that I would resonate with the views of a Hasidic wife. She has opened my heart and my eyes to her life and a beautiful view of marriage and family. Thank you for sharing that beauty with all of us.

Same here, I’m not a very religious person, but if I had to choose I would be a Jew. Out of all the religions they don’t push their religion on you and they don’t judge or damn you to hell.

The way the wife explains the matchmaking/search for a partner process makes so much sense. You follow your heart but you also make sure this person is someone who will fit into your life. You go into the match with open eyes, an open mind, and an open heart. ❤

When people worry so much their lifetime will fly by and what will they have to give thanks for? Old age and wrinkles. Live! You only have one life but this world will still be surviving long after we are gone.
Y concern is not for myself but for future generations who might suffer because of our lack of concern for them while we indulge ourselves without a worry for what their lives might be like. I'm lucky, I don't have a single wrinkle despite being concerned for future generations! 😅 lucky me.

This was so invigorating. I just recently retired and have been working on my ancestry. I was not taught to be part of the Jewish community by a mother who was bullied for being Jewish in Public Schools and so she grew up self-deprecating. I look at this amazing family and at once realize all that was missing in my childhood and life, but at the same time not believing people can be so happy just to be alive. I've never felt that way.

This is my first glimpse into the Lubavitcher sect. This particular community emanates such joy! Open and welcoming to all - yet still pious.
As a Christian, this makes my heart smile.
And a wife who was allowed to achieve success, then CHOSE a traditional life…with a husband who actively engages with his children.
I feel like my incorrect perception of what it means to be Haredi - very stern, outsiders not welcome, participation in the “outside”world will lead you off the path - was based on what I’ve seen/read about the ways of another sect.
I’d actually get on the horrendous BQE to take a tour to learn more, now that I know I will be welcomed, and our different faiths mutually respected

As an outsider, I really appreciate hearing about the women's role and I see how important it is to your culture. I love the thought that in raising my children, I was doing God's work.
I am a Christian. I live in Upstate New York near a Hasidic community. I’ve found some to be friendly and some not, but I’ve found that many times it’s how I approach. What my attitude towards them is that effects how they treat me. Sometimes they seem fearful, so I don’t push it.
Also, I just wanted to say that there is so much love shown here it’s beautiful and I can be feel it throughout this video. I love your wife’s explanation of her yearning. It’s brilliant and beautiful and very accurate on how a good marriage and family stays close and strong. I don’t agree with every teaching here, but the main points I do agree with, that the wife and mother is the source of love and the father is the source of security. I wish you and your family much love and happiness.

😅 we also have 8 kids. It takes a bizarre blend of rigid routine and laxity to make it work, but it's a wild ride! Of all the stuff my husband and I have done in our lives, and we've done a lot, our biggest adventure and greatest honor is raising all these crazy kids the best we can and hoping they go out into the world and make their little corner of it a better place.
