WTF Happened to Fred Durst?

  • If you came of age in the late nineties/early 2000s, you knew Limp Bizkit. You may have loved them or hated them - they were that kind of band…but whatever the case, you for sure knew who they were. Led by frontman Fred Durst, they were the faces of mainstream Nu Metal at a time when the genre was taking off. The band definitely never got the respect of a band like Korn or Rage Against the Machine - for a good reason probably. While Rage was all about non-conformity, Limp Bizkit’s lyrics were more about breaking stuff (to the point that one of their best-known songs is literally called “Break Stuff”), which led to the band getting a lot of ire from critics and even within the industry. Who could ever forget the sight of Fred Durst accepting an MTV award while Rage’s Tim Commerford climbed the show’s set in protest of Limp beating them for Best Rock Video?
As the decade went on, Nu Metal began to fall out of fashion, and so did Limp Bizkit. They were never able to recapture the zeitgeist the way they did around 2000, but to his credit, Fred Durst branched out in interesting ways. He became a movie director, helping to discover Jesse Eisenberg with The Education of Charlie Banks, directing the decent enough Ice Cube vehicle The Longshots, and making a John Travolta horror movie called The Fanatic, which is either incredible or one of the worst movies ever depending on who you talk to (like his music, Durst’s movies are divisive). In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we examine Durst’s rise to fame with Limp Bizkit, the controversial fall from grace and his attempts at a comeback.
This episode is written (with Brad Hamerly), edited, produced and narrated by Taylor James Johnson.
Do you think Limp Bizkit deserves the hate they get? Let us know in the comments!

Limp Bizkit saved my life, as a little kid I was bullied at school from not only my own grade but from 2 grades above and below, bullied for being different, for questioning religion, for questioning social stereotypes, for stepping out of the box and that my parents didn't have TV and we only watched Star Trek tapes. Living out in remote country at the time meant I had no friends on the street to visit, I was isolated and alone, playing make believe with sticks in the dirt by myself. My parents seem to have my own life already mapped out for me regardless how I felt about it. I hated the world and wanted to end my life, then I was introduced to Limp Bizkit, Crazy Town and Eminem when I was a young teenager. While listening to Limp Bizket they basically said to me "we get it and if your going to die, take the whole fucking universe with you because they deserve it for what they did to you- get the fuck up and let em know". As I grew up I learned the world is run by bullies and gathered a mature perspective about it, but I never forget that it was Limp Bizkit that said we know, we get it and your not the only one which saved me from ending the pain and fight their fire with their own fire

The idiots who brought 5 / 6 things for him to sign to obviously resell and the true fans like myself all got their items signed as Stanley. They left genuinely pissed that he did that to their items and ruined the value and I died laughing about it and still have both vinyls he signed for me proudly hanging on display in my music room. I was even chopping it up with their security guard who was cool about everything and just thanked him for not being a dick (he easily could've) and he agreed that those vouchers looking for autographs to sell ruin it for fans like myself but that he can appreciate genuine fans looking for an interaction. To give “still sucks” a bit of credit for only reaching 155 in the billboard 200 it only ever got an online release! Streaming and iTunes only. I’m not saying it would have ever hit the top 10 or anything but i imagine if it got a physical release as well on cd and vinyl it would have charted a bit higher than it did. I personally love LB! It’s clear that Fred is playing a character when on stage or in the studio and that away from that he is an intelligent and well mannered dude who is funny and cares about people and his fans :)

He may not have been able to see much from the Woodstock stage but he did start crowd surfing on the wooden boards which I'm sure didn't help calm the crowd down. Fame clearly went to his head much too fast and he burned out as a result. I do wish him the best with his health though, I know that he and the music did play a big role in people's lives during that time
