You guys should react to the Magnificent seven
Can you guys do a movie reaction for Gone Girl and The Lego Movie next? That'd be awesome, both movie are turning 10 years old (my god I didn't know it's already that long) this year so it could be a perfect timing 😁
Can you guys keep it down with the racial comments it's rude towards some people and a bit much on the jokes they're not funny
@@elleanjackson5388 I know... It was some of the most UNFUNNY Ive seen these two be.. And that´s saying something :S
The last scene with the Mom's chocolate really got me, crying like a baby
I swear to god 😭
Actually had me making a joke in the theater. The chocolate is probably 10+ years old.. the cast took one bite and started puking. 😂
Me too! I saw it with my mum, and she was like, why did cry at that? 😭😂
@@Gokaiman1234 I had to tell myself because the movie has magic that chocolate has a "magical" expiration date. hahaha
@Gokaiman1234 I thought that as well lol
One of the most underappreciated movie of 2023 ngl. This movie is so fun and whimsical. The songs are amazing, there is no bad song in this movie. And Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka is great, although he's playing Wonka with a different perspective, and obviously not better than Gene Wilder, but nobody can deny that he's very charming and committed to this role. Also no oscar nom for production design?? Still a really, really fun time!
Or best song nomination?
Made half a billion, where is the under appreciation? Feels pretty appreciated.
That’s what happens when you make a movie in this day and age. If the cgi or songs or everything isn’t 100 percent perfect or realistic, instantly bad and bashed online. That’s the reality of the world
@@DaviniaHill you clearly haven’t been looking at reviews on the internet and from critics. People like to tear movies apart for the use of cgi, musicals, and anything that’s a sequel or anything connected to a beloved actor or movie, and just rip it to shreds comparing it to the original.
Definitely a good if not perfect film for WB to celebrate its 100 years of Storytelling!
I'm not an emotional guy, but hearing World of Pure Imagination again made me tear up. Rest in peace Gene Wilder
Same! I got my brother to watch it and he said the film felt like nothing but a cash grab and he absolutely hated the Oompa Loompa lol. As for me, I went in with a cynical mindset and was absolutely surprised at how much I loved this film. In terms of top ten films of 2023 I’d put as number 3 on my list next to Nefarious and Godzilla Minus I.
Same. I cried when the song came on, it was the perfect moment to use it too
This movie felt like a big warm hug.
SO TRUE!!!
When I watched this in theaters, I loved this. Timothee is very underrated for this talent as an actor and his singing voice, absolutely love it. This film definitely has a lot more heart than I expected.
Agreed. I was crying at some parts.
ABSOLUTELY!! COULDN'T agree MORE!!!
Same. It’s unironically a very sweet story!
Timothee Chalamet has been popular for awhile. Although its very hard to pinpoint any particular breakout role. Its only now that he's venturing from indie films to blockbuster films with the likes of Dune and Wonka.i first saw him in the tv show "Homeland" but he was already popular long before i watched that show. Definitely a very talented individual.
@@markcruz359I would venture to say Beautiful Boy or Call Me By Your Name was his breakout role! I remember loving those movies back when he started blowing up
Timothee Chalamet nicely carries the title role of his sweet candymaker into legitimate prequel territory
That's how I tell my friends and coworkers what this movie is. It is not meant to take the place of the Gene Wilder original but to be a prequel to see how Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka may have started out!
@@kaleemarie13actually it is cuz the oompa loompas look the same as the ones from the gene wilder film also the director said himself its a prequel to both the book and the 1971 film
Paul king, who also did Paddington. Just...knows how to be whimsical. The style in the movie, the endlessly hopefully main characters. He truly knows how to adapt children's book characters, and make changes in the right places
Doesn’t also hurt that he also had as a producer and creative consultant, the grandson of Roald Dahl himself, Luke Kelly!
@@Otisboy121 oh definitely! The crew as a whole is also definitely just as awesome
I love most of the set production, but the chocolates should have been designed by a food stylist; I totally understand the original aesthetic of the first movie and maybe the source material had like toy shapes and novelties as edibles, but I think the audience should be envious when the food is shown (“Chef”, “Paddington”)
not a failing, just a missed opportunity in an otherwise very rich production landscape
@@hellfish2309 you know what I will agree with you there. If there were any shortcomings for me, it was the look of the candy. Specifically the candy noodle ate for her first. I get it in terms of it being a literal representation of the things wonka puts in it (thunderstorm). But for me it looked less like a delicious chocolate and more like smth cool to look at. Like you said not a fail, but def smth I noticed!
My dad saw the original Willy Wonka in the theaters back in the 70s. He was 9. It’s his favorite movie, and seeing this with him made him very happy. He is someone who is very hard to please when it comes to movies.
What a memory to share with you and your dad
My mom passed away when i was really young, the scene where willy reads his moms note and sees her in the crowd really got me 😢
I third-wheeled my brother's date at the movies to go see this, and it was WAY better then I expected.
The first chocolate he gave her with the lightning bolt was the best thing I've ever seen.
There is no reason that even ONE of these amazing songs shouldn’t have been nominated for an Oscar! Especially “A World Of Your Own”, that song honestly rivals “Pure Imagination” for me.
ABSOLUTELY crazy!! I can't stop humming, singing and dancing to these songs!
They're FANTASTIC!!!
One right after the other!!
I love both songs equally for sure!
A world of your own made me feel good immediately. Very surprised how good this movie was for me.
@@jameswoods4793 I ABSOLUTELY agree 1000%! 👍
One of the best Movies of the year, or ANY year, hands down!!
so many people were doubting this movie from the trailers, but idc, this was so much fun and charming as hell !
Hugh Grants accent implys Oompa Loompa Land is actually just England
Or that it has been colonized.
And the Star Wars galaxy is actually just America and the UK.
@@alexp601LMAO 😂😂😂😂
And the lord of the rings is actually located in New Zealand
@@chasehlee7197 LMAOOOOO
The moment the trailers said, "From The Director Of Paddington", that's where i was definitely sold and expecting the movie to be atleast good. Paul King can do no wrong and i'm happy to say that Wonka turned out to be great and succeed (apparently it became the highest grossing Willy Wonka movie ever so that's nice)
I seen this with my 11 year old daughter, and the way I seen her smile and cry made this one of my favorite films of 2023. I even cried a few times 😢.
I've listened to the "Scrub Scrub" song more than i care to remember ever since seeing it in theaters. And Hugh Grant was definitely the Oompa Loompa that i never knew i needed the most
Guys... I wasn't expecting a Wonka movie to make me smile, amazed, worried and cry in that sequence.
It was soooo much better that I thought it would be.
It's still my head cannon that the last silver sovereign Wonka drops in the gutter is the same on that Charlie finds and buys the winning chocolate bar with.
this film is absolutely perfect, Timothée Chalamet is WONDERFUL in everything on this movie, his acting, his composition of Wonka, his voice singing, the way he portrays, dance, talks and he managed to fit even better in this character than Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder imo, it was my favorite movie from 2023 even having Oppenheimer, Barbie, Godzilla: Minus One and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning. Thanks Paul King for this masterpiece!
When he sang, his voice reminded me of Barry Manilow
This was a genuine delight to watch in the cinema, I would gladly welcome a sequel
We’ve gotten a sequel, twice. *ba-dum tsss*
Seriously though I’d love a second one to bridge the gap
I remember sitting in the theater and hearing every time they hinted at Pure Imagination and like anxiously waiting and then when he starts I legit started crying for no reason he just does it so well
I was so skeptical about this movie but I watched it last night and actually got emotional at the end. Such a fun movie. Timothee did such a good job.
I watched Wonka in the cinema with my brother and we really had fun with it, it definitely feels like something in the same world as Paddington.
They were directed by the same person!
Timothee Chalamet is the perfect choice for young Wonka. His charisma can elevate it
ikr and to the people saying he wasn't are just haters who hate on everything
I saw this with my mom and older brother who is 27, I am 21. The theater was literally empty besides us. It was one of my favorite movie experiences ever. So beautiful and whimsical. I wish I could thank everyone involved in making Wonka!
The funniest part of this for me was when the director, Paul King said in interviews that Timothee's viral rap high school performance with his alter ego "Lil Timmy Tim" was the main reason why he got cast. And it you're wondering why it's funny, watch his viral rap video. It's hilarious and better appreciate the one zero zero zero trillion percent confidence he had for that performance 😂😂
I saw this movie in theaters. I was surprised that it was really good. It was the first Timothee Chalamet movie that he actually didn't annoy me. "Pure Imagination" made me bawl. I first saw the Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka and Chocolate Factory when I was 8 on ABC Family with my grandfather. My grandfather died on May 17, 2002. A month before I turned 10. He loved the song "Pure Imagination".
Me and my bud saw this film as a joke...
little did either of us know, we'd leave the cinema thinking " huh.... that was actually really enjoyable " :D
I think this movie is the most Roald Dahlesque, all the nods to Charlie and the Chocolate factory, BFG, Matilda and more. I loved it!
The best movie of 2023 and one of the most uplifting experiences I had at the cinema in a long time. Watched it twice and would watch it a hundred times at the theatre. Hearing Pure Imagination in such a loving, respectful and powerful version is such an homage to Gene Wilder and all the magic of our childoods. Wonderful!
I would put this in my top 3 Timothée Chalamet films. I love it so very much. It's so delightful and fun and it reminds me of the old school MGM musicals with touches of Wes Anderson.
Every time Wonka and wraps, and sees the golden note from his mother, it just makes me cry.
This one was SUCH a refreshing and delightful gem!!! I was wary going into it but by the end was charmed by its whimsy, I loved that it was so fun and silly and didn’t take itself seriously at all-the scene with him and noodle dancing at the zoo is PEAK magic I teared up !!❣️
You guys should react to Society of the Snow, it's directed by J.A Bayona (the same director that did The Impossible). It's nominated for an Oscar and it's an amazing film.
Yes!
Agreed!! This movie is way too amazing and I wish more people reacted go it 😭
Let alone two Oscar noms, actually
Saw this in theaters with mom and grandma during my Christmas break last year. I’m in college and love the original 71 version and anytime it’s on tv I watch it. This movie was great with some nods back to the original gene wilder movie like the original oompa loompa flute tune wilder played back then Hugh grant sings the song.
When pure imagination started at the end with the factory being built in cgi it reminded me when the kids go through the chocolate room in the 71 movie.
Yeah, some of this is just nostalgia if you grew up in the 70s.
“World of your own” I loved that song couldn’t stop listening to that song after the movie was over.
At the beginning of world of your own wonka said “count to ten make a wish” something like that it’s a call back to pure imagination in the 70s movie too. Except wilder says “ count to 3 make a wish but a nice little callback to the original.
Oh and I forgot “scratch that, reverse it.” Was so memorable.
I think the most shocking thing about this movie is that it's already on streaming. It's only been 6 weeks since it premiered in theaters!
Paul King is a certified genius. The specifically English whimsy in this and Paddington is just superb.
I liked how this movie felt like a story. Not a prequel or origin story. Just a nice story about Willy Wonka.
So gene wilders Willy Wonka is my favorite movie of all time. Growing up it was the one constant of my life and one of my mom's favorite movies as well. There are so many nods to the classic movie and it was exactly what i wanted. I lost my mom two years ago and the mother plot line in this movie actually made me cry in the theater. It really touched me and i truly felt like this was a love letter to the source material
5:00 This is my own personal head-canon, but I like to think that this mother and baby are Charlie and his mom.
... and the one silver sovereign that fell in the storm drain would be the one that Charlie finds years later to buy the one Wonka Bar containing the Golden Ticket to Wonka's Chocolate Factory!
@@mechamanblade8465 That would be a great way to tie both movies together.
You nailed the Christoph Waltz “That’s a Bingo”!
I gotta say, I wasn't expecting anything, but Timothee Aye Shimmy Yay Chalamet really brought the Swalla lala...
Truly an unexpected performance by Toyota Chevrolet
1:53 Narrator(me): Once upon a time,….near the shores of a far away land,…..there was a boat coming into harbor. And on board that boat, was a boy like no other….. 1:57
15:42 Love the added lyrics, scrubs and dialogue to the song! Gave it even more life!
15:47 Willy: Scrub, Scrub?
15:48 Abacus
Bleacher: 15:49
20:25 Willy’s Travel Factory is all practical! No CG!
24:37 Fun Fact: The personality and inspiration for the cartel really were driven from not just the mentioning of their names in the books and movies but also Boggis Bunce and Bean.
26:02 And Mrs. Scrubbit is also inspired by a short story of Roald Dahl’s, “The Landlady”.
27:12 - 27:14 🎶A little bit sticky, a little bit thicker!🎶
27:29 Willy Wonka’s Wild and Wonderful Wishy Washy Wonka Walker!
I can't speak for everyone, but for me it 100% lived up to the hype. Timothée Chalamet is always a treat but this movie is the one musical that didnt dissapoint me this year. I love the opening song "Hat Full Of Dreams" "Scrub Scrub" and "For a Moment" as my fave songs.
Timothée Chalamet absolutely KILLED IT in this role! I can't say I'm surprised, though. 💜
Oh my GOSH, I COULDN'T agree MORE!! Timothee was a FANTASTIC Wonka and this Movie was an ABSOLUTE blast!!
A MUST see!
I can't WAIT to own it at the end of February!!
Timothee deserves an oscar for this movie. A fresh type of genre absolutey love this movie and the songs in it
Liked this so much more than i expected, Timothee was just so charming and the story was heartwarming, had a big smile on my face for most of it and then the tears at the end
I had the exact same reaction. I have loved timothee ever since call me by your name. ❤
Watching the scene where they dance in St Albans Park was like a dream for me considering I grew up there, feeding the ducks, scratching my knees playing with my sister :) it brings me joy
My sister actually cried at the ending of this movie. It was genuinely sweet.
I cried too. I really liked the movie - the ending just hit right.
So glad you did a reaction to this. Its such a great movie! Fun, whimsical, gorgeous videography and choreo! I loved Timothy singing in this, it was like story telling singing! You dont get wholesome feel good movies like this anymore
Willy was such a positive, encouraging, kind person in this , it made me even more curious how we he became so closed off and critical
I saw the movie in theaters and cried three times, this movie was amazing and again I cried from this wonderful reaction
I know people hate prequels and such but this one's the worth of a watch, it's extremely beautiful
I love the Mary Poppinesque feel this movie had! Exceeded my expectations!
Here's a fun fact: Timothée Chalamet and Tom Holland were the frontrunners for the main role which honestly makes me wonder how would this movie be with Tom instead of Timmy, also Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling and Ezra Miller were considered as well for the role
i dont think ryan gosling would suit the role of willy wonka he suit the role of ken
29:57 Simon Farnaby co-wrote the fillm. He also co-wrote Paddington 2.
I hope you guys enjoyed this one! I saw it with my mum last weekend because my dad wouldn’t go with her. They were gifted Gold Class tickets and food and wine for their 50th anniversary. It was so fun and the movie is great. I didn’t even realise it was a musical and I was so happy. Timothée Chalamet and Calah Lane were fabulous, even Hugh Grant surprised me. And of course Olivia Coleman is always fantastic.
This movie really gave me vibes on how the greatest showman was filmed and the time period. In fact we would love for y’all to watch that one!!!
The endings bittersweet for me, knowing what comes after this.
And honestly, if they wanted to try and get away with a sequel where we finally see the spies being sent in and Wonka firing everyone and meeting the Oompa Loompas, I wouldn't be mad
This was a pleasure. And that last scene made me bawl crying... the Gene wilder version is one of my favorite movies ever. And their homage to his version touched my heart. Timothy felt more like Wilder original version. Sweet and wholesome. ✨️✨️✨️🍭🍫
Since my brother works at our local AMC Theater, this was the most re-watched (I think close to 20 times!) movie to pass evenings! I came in with 0 expectations since I love Gene Wilder's performance, but I surprisingly love this movie!
i think the people who just want a nice, fun wholesome movie with a charming cast will love this movie, but as always you get people going into this type of movie thinking its meant to be some groundbreaking masterpiece of cinema and do nothing but complain - sometimes movies are just meant to be fun and enjoyable
This was an absolute musical to me. The songs are brilliant and Timothee Chalamet is so underrated. I’m learning Pure Imagination
Its a very sweet movie (pun not intended). Did it need to exist? No, but its much better than it had any right to be. Is it like the original? No, but movies (and especially movie musicals) have changed a lot since the 70s.
Lil connections to the OG film i like:
- The washroom set up and how that clearly influenced Willy's Inventing Room from the first movie.
- The inspo for the Golden Ticket being his mothers lil note on sharing chocolate with people one cares for.
- Willy dropping the silver coin into the drain, which is a wink to Charlie finding the silver coin in a drain that leads to him finding the golden ticket.
- Given how itd be super random otherwise, I think Abigail is either supposed to be (or is at least a nod to) the giraffe from "The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me", another Roald Dahl book where the protag ends up running a sweet shop and selling Wonka sweets
- Scrubbit and Bleacher clearly being The Twits is very funny
Honestly my biggest compaint is the comedian character, he's lame af. They could have written him out and the movie would have been inherently better for not wasting precious screen time on him. He's not funny, and he doesn't have a skill that actually comes into play in any way (the movie tries to justify him by having him pretend to be the zoo keeper on the phone, but literally any of them could have done that)
21:38 - This is based on the book, and the musical written by Roald Dahl. The edition that was done by Gene Wilder, while revered by audiences now, was done AGAINST the wishes of Dahl. He stated that Wonka wouldn’t harbor as much anger as displayed. They also changed the role of Slugworth, and removed the rest of the candy makers. When that film was released, it not only did poorly- it was a FLOP. The reason it became popular was its sale to a television network, that aired it annually. Then monthly. It became a semi-religion for kids to watch it when it was on. Movies weren’t really on TV just yet. The same thing happened with The Wizard of Oz. It creates a connection to a film, that when we watch back…. Really wouldn’t make it had it been written in 2024. Now, before his death Dahl had written his own screenplay. They used it as a reference for Johnny Depp’s edition, and The Broadway Musical. This film, is based on the book and the Musical.
Solid film with great production design and Chalamet is great as Wonka. I do believe the reason Wonka sell the golden tickets was to find The Next Noodle To Run The Factory which is Charlie.
Idea, marry Poppins & Wonka are either related or come from the same place because their magic is the same
I LOVED every second of it, you should've seen my grin throughout the whole thing. I'm a musical lover and this is definitely my kind of movie, the songs were great, the comedy was on point and the plot was heartfelt but without turning out cheesy, not to mention Timothée Chalamet is way too charismatic in this role
I grew up w/the Wilder version, & I love Depp, but this was my fav & I never expected that. I loved the magic of it.
5:09 Like the little easter egg or like to think this is the coin charlie finds to get his golden ticket.
This movie won me over with the first few notes at the beginning from the original. I didn’t like the trailer, but Chalamet made a great younger Wonka. You can feel the love that went into it.
PS And yea Ghosts actors!!
I had been hoping for Pure Imagination and when he finally started singing it I cried.
Me and my mom go on movie dates whenever my dad doesn’t wanna watch a movie she does. And this was our recent one and it was a good one for me and her to go watch together. It surprisingly was better than I originally thought it was going to be. I loved it and can’t wait to watch it with you guys ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Timothée, Chalamet really surprised me as a young Willy wonka the movie is so charming and the songs are so catchy it’s a gem for sure and i love the original a lot
My favourite film from 2023. It made me feel so good I had to see it 3 times. It’s like a warm hug. Just what the world needed. Paul King makes magic 🙂✨🩷 xx
Such a nice surprise, expected nothing and got a great fun movie in return! I can totally see how this will become a regular watch, especially for certain generations.
The beautiful Bodleian Library in my home city of Oxford was used as the library where Noodles Mum lived
I’m so glad I saw this movie in theaters with candy from the concessions, I was hungry throughout the entire movie because of how delicious everything looked.
I will say this may be my favorite Willy Wonka film they have made, Gene Wilder is Iconic, & while a lot of people enjoyed Johnny Depp, I personally never liked his rendition of the film. This film means so much to me because it came out right when I needed it & I was considering completely giving up on my dreams, its movies like these that can really re-invigorate the passion for what you love, I’m not calling it perfect cause there are definitely flaws, but it came out right when I needed to hear the message this film was giving, & I wish I had this film as a kid. Kuddo’s to the entire cast & crew for all the hard work they put into this film, & I genuinely believe people will talk about this film for years to come & I hope they continue the story if they can cause I would love to see Timothy Chalamet return & portray his version of Wonka again but continue to grow it into the version we see with Gene Wilder, I think Chalamet has the acting chops for it & I would be there opening night for any sequel for it! I just hope I’m not the only one who shares this sentiment & thank you Reel Rejects for the amazing reaction to it!
I also just realized this listening to the soundtrack, is For a Moment & Sorry Noodle the same track instrument wise just in a different key? I don’t know much about music composition so I could be dead wrong, just sounds very similar to one another if not
21:50. Because it feels more like a performance, I’d love to see this as a Broadway musical.
There is a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Broadway Musical!
Watching this movie, feels like what I imagine eating a Wonka chocolate bar is like lol it’s so sweet and whimsical. Really glad this movie is successful!
Recognising Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby & Charlotte Ritchie from Ghosts and Horrible Histories puts you a step above many others when reacting to this film.
Love how Farnaby cameos in things he also writes on: Paddington & Wonka.
1:12:36 “the goat status of Johnny Depp”?! I beg your pardon?! You don’t use goat to describe ANY Wonka besides Gene Wilder.
(30 mins) John said William and I thought he was talkng to me hahah
I think the woman with the baby begging is Charlie Bucket's mom, and Timothee damaged his shoulder on the stunt going from the top of the truck to the lamppost and then to the ground
The coin he dropped in the drain is the one that the original charlie found to buy his wonka bar with the the last ticket
Seeing this movie in theaters was an experience, everyone applauding at the end was chilling. It's a RADIANT film.
Loved this movie. Was much better than I expected. Would have liked a little less song/musical, but it didn't really deter from it
12:48 To be fair, most things that enter your mouth are going to exit via your rear. It’s a universal design flaw
The guy from ghosts, the one at the zoo, wrote this. That’s why so many other ghosts actors are in it.
He is also in the Paddington films too! He cracks me up.
There's a strong Harry Potter influence in this movie and I'm all for it,I mean this movie was written by those who made Harry Potter after all, so far the only movies I've seen that Timothèe Chamalet is in are both the Dune movies and already I'm intrigued and ngl I was pleasantly surprised to see Timothèe's more carefree and lighthearted side after seeing his shall I say more grizzly, angry and more serious side in Dune part 1
I got Annie, Mary Poppins, & A Series of Unfortunate Events vibes throughout this entire movie😂 love how he said “it’s a hard knock life for you” when in my reaction, I thought of Annie too😂😂
The film has made $600M at the box office so far, not just me craving something sweet i see!
The Scrubbits made me think of The Twits too. With that end scene where they drink the poisons and come out all warped, I was hoping they would just turn into The Twits as an in-joke.
This has really become one of my absolute favourite movies so fast! I watched it twice in cinema and left both times with a skip in my steps, dancing through the streets! The music is still stuck in my head and I listen to it all the time :) I think they did a really good job with this ❤
I expected nothing and this movie was actually a good time ! Really enjoyed the Roal Dahl universe being brought to life, thought it was very accurate to the genius absurdism of his books :)
Charlie grandpa mentioned slugworth , Wonka dropping the coin down the sewer bar hints to charlie finding it , golden ticket idea from Wonka's mom, police chef getting fat while wearing blue hints to the bubblegum girl that turns into a violet blueberry, Wonka's washing machine idea was in his factory, contract idea from those two awful hotel owners, chocolate that makes you float hints to the drink charlie and his grandpa drinks to float in the air, lastly pure imagination.
So excited to see Greg and John react to this movie! This movie is good and charming! 👍
So my experience with Wonka was interesting. I brought tickets for The Boy and The Heron and immediately thought it was at the same AMC theater I often go to. The staff scanned the tickets and said The Boy and The Heron stopped playing at that specific theater three weeks prior, and I realized how it was at another AMC theater 35 minutes away. But they still honored my purchase for any other movie that was in the theater I was at, I chose Wonka, and I left the theater pretty satisfied with this movie, which says a lot since I’m not typically a huge prequel guy. (I still saw The Boy and The Heron the next week at the right theater btw 😂)
Fair point on world feeled real in Willy Wonka, that movie was in 1971 taking place in 1971. This one was an uphill climb being a period piece in the 40s/50s, seemed more constructed and clean.
It wasn’t entirely what I thought it was gonna be, but I really enjoyed it and I would watch it again still not up there with Gene Wilder though, as who could be
