  • It's official. JJ Redick has turned in his 2022-23 NBA Awards ballot. That's right, an MVP has been selected. All three guys are 100% deserving of the award but JJ could only pick one. It was tough to pick an MVP between Nikola Jokic (The Denver Nuggets), Joel Embiid (The Philadelphia 76ers) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (The Milwaukee Bucks) but JJ explains why he selected who he did and much more.

This means that giannis contributed to his team's winrate by +28%. On the other hand Philly had a 68% winrate without embiid and a 65% winrate with Embiid. This means embiid seems to have a negative effect on his own team by having an impact of -3% on his teams winrate. (Feel free to fact check me) This does not mean that Embiid is a bad player by any means, but it completely flips your argument and showcases exactly how great of an impact Giannis makes. Didn’t even deserve to win the past 2 years either. MVP award is given to one of the best players in the league, yet how can you be one of the best players & not make a deep playoff run? Idc about & I actually despise the “it’s a regular season award” argument. Every team in this entire league is playing with one main goal at the end of the day: WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. Not get the most wins throughout the year. Given that idea it doesn’t make sense that the player who supposably adds the most wins should be given the award. If that’s the case why can’t Steph Curry be MVP in 21’. Or Kobe in the post Shaq era or even Sabonis this year? All teams listed would’ve lost significantly more games without them, yet they weren’t in serious MVP conversations. Dude even Mitchell & the Jazz in the early 20s. They were the 1 seed, yet neither Gobert or Mitchell were actually considered for the award. You know why? Because the truth is the real MVP & his team should be valid contenders. Every single one of those teams listed were not. It’s that simple. Despite their success we all know the Nuggets aren’t even going to make the finals so same rules should apply. Dude didn’t even make it to the conference finals his supposed MVP years & we’re supposed to praise his play? Get a grip. Tatum & Giannis should be the only answers ANYONE has. Seriously. One of those two teams is 100% winning a chip this year, or AT LEAST heavily favorited to. West is up for grabs, East not so much.
Nuggets are 1000% pretenders & no one on that team deserves an award now or even back then. If he does we all should really consider Perks point on privilege in this league…

The argument is that the excellence Joel has played with this year is ridiculous, plenty to be the clear cut MVP if it happened in many other previous seasons. The issue is.. It didn't. Giannis had a better season than him and Jokic had a better one than either. #1 in Value over replacement, both offensive AND defensive box plus/minus, offensive win shares, win shares/48, and the only of the 3 to be top 20 in both offensive (#5) AND defensive (#12) rating. Substantially higher shooting percentages and still lead his team to #1 in his conference.

Really impressed by JJ choice here, even more when I remember that he is a friend of Joel's and left Giannis out of his list when talking with Joel about the best players in an earlier episode. Giannis really is the best player in the best team and did it in a historic manner, with the whole Wilt numbers with an ever better percentage. When people look back to this era of the NBA, it will be impossible to talk about it without starting with the Freak. And to be honest, if he doesn't win this year (I would bet in Joel because of the narrative), we might look to 2023 in a few years in the same light we look into some Lebron or Kobe years: "wtf this guy only have X's MVPs?".

Jokic hands down. 70.2% TS% leads the league. That type of insane efficiency is just getting ignored, and it is ridiculous. Efficiency gods like Steph, KD, and Harden have NEVER even had a season above 68%. Giannis and Embiid have never had a season above 65%. Jokic is 10% above Giannis this season. Jokic is on another level that no one else can compare to when it comes to volume scoring at insane efficiency. And he's averaging 12 rebounds, 10 assists to boot. There's no case for anyone but Jokic.
And Jokic never gets credit for his defense. He's actually pretty good. Giannis has been DPOY, Embiid has been DPOY finalist. Nobody even mentions Jokic and defense together. Yet this year in defensive win shares Embiid 3.9, Jokic 3.8, Giannis 3.7. They're all basically tied

I agree with Giannis by default. I say default because you can tell Jokic was turned off by striving and winning the trophy when he was labeled a "stat padder" and the racial aspect was brought into the MVP conversation. It was his to lose, 100%, until Denver started declining as soon as the MVP conversation became ridiculous. It's like Jokic took his foot off the gas on purpose so he could fade away from the top of this list Giannis has been the best player in the league for the past 3-4 years, is on the best overall team and has unfairly been given the LeBron/MJ MVP treatment the last two years. So him winning his 3rd makes complete sense.

Like a few days ago when the TNT guys were discussing the MVP race, Kenny made an offhand remark that Giannis is averaging about 27 (?!) points per game. He's literally the second player since Wilt Chamberlain to average these sorts of numbers (30, 10 and 5) and there seems to be a collective effort by the media to just ignore it.

Might be the first time in history I agree with JJ Redick. Don't feel good about that, but he's correct. Giannis is the MVP and he will not win it. There is no argument for Joel. His numbers are very similar to Giannis but he's on a worse team. A couple points higher in average, but worse in rebounds and assists. To be on the worse team, Joel needs to have had a significantly better season and it didn't happen. This is how it's worked throughout history. Magic Johnson won an mvp going 22/9 on the best team while Jordan went 33/8/8 on a worse team and didn't get it. That year Jordan did have the significantly better season and still didn't get it. This year, they are too close in numbers to give it to the player on the worse team. They are supposed to reward the better record. Hopefully they keep that trend going this season. Feels like Joel and his people have been basically begging for the mvp for a couple years now, so he might end up with it, but it should be Giannis

    - PHI w/o Embiid: 11-4
    - MIL w/o Giannis: 10-9
    - DEN w/o Jokic: 5-8
Giannis has the best record - but he has a better supporting cast than the other guys.
Embiid has the league's top assist guy on his team and one of the top 20 players in the league (still!) in Harden.
Jokic is the only one of these guys that doesn't have an all-star teammate. He's doing the most with the least.

For me Embiid is my top choice I think he had the best individual season and led his team to great success. Giannis is my second pick since he's a top 3 player and on the best team in the league. I think they're the closest to each other. Jokic is my third since he statistically had the best season and has the best team in the west. Why I think it shouldn't go to Jokic over the other two is because the east is far more competitive this season and I really value defense.
