The fact that Victor Wembenyama is in conversation for all NBA third team, defensive player of the year, and undoubtably rookie of the year is a testament and itself.
I just want to remind everybody that Victor is in all these conversations and he said himself that he was not satisfied with what he did this year…. In a couple of years we are going to witness Victor WembenMAMBA Lord willing

Joker is the 8th in total steals and the third in defensive rtg. Not a bad defender at all

this is bold, publicly announcing his votes. i respect JJ a lot, and this year with mind the game and him doing this, i truly think the NBA should seriously think about bringing him in as an exec as well. he is slowly becoming a very influential voice for the game of basketball and he can help take the sport to even greater heights with his intelligence and trust that he's built with the fans of the sport. love you JJ, we need more people like you talking about sport and bring respect back into the sport, especially with all the gambling issues taking a forefront in conversations these days.

Who would you take out?
We saw AD struggling defensively in some (not a lot) games. It shouldn't be the case for a all-defensive team player.
@@yopyop6166we saw the runaway DPOY struggle
Wemby is lowkey being blackballed from DPOY this season just because we all know his ceiling is higher. Similar to how people downplay Wilt Chamberlain's stats because of the era in which they occurred, Wemby is being given the "he's just a rookie" treatment.
yea im pissed. its definitely rigged.
Or maybe Gobert is just better? Wemby is great and deserving of top 3 DPOY, probably even the runner up but Gobert overall is more impactful on defense. Not only is he a great rim protector like Wemby but he also is better on-ball against other elite centers and he commands the defense in a way Wemby isn't capable of yet. Just like there are guys that have the intangibles to run an offense, there are guys who have the intangibles to run a defense and Gobert is one of the best ever at it.
Check the drtg on/off splits for the other Minnesota starters, literally all of them are negative. One of the biggest reasons for the small dropoff is that they have great defenders on the 2nd unit. Without Rudy that starting unit would be subpar defensively. I believe the Spurs went from 30th to 22nd of defense this year. TWolves went from 28th to 10th and now to 1st with Gobert. Consider this: the last time a player from a team with a defensive rating outside the top 5 won the Defensive Player of the Year award was 17 years ago. The lowest-ranked defense for a DPOY winner ever was 16th. Currently, the Spurs rank 22nd in defensive rating. It begs the question whether it's fitting to award DPOY to a player leading a team with a defense in the bottom third. It's akin to suggesting MVP honors for players whose teams miss the playoffs. Also I'd argue that as much as the teams defense being bad isn't Wembys fault that also makes Wembys' on/off differentials inflated due to the shortcomings of the bench, notably the absence of a reliable backup center.
Wemby would be a historically awful DPOY. His team would have the worst defense ever for a DPOY winner, the least amount of wins for a DPOY winner. He definitely has more gravity than Rudy, a better perimeter defender too. However the point of the game is to win, and Wemby’s team is awful. Just cause the award says “Defensive Player” doesn’t mean it’s just about the player, it’s never been about one thing but how that one thing affects the team as a whole.
So it's a team award. Gay!

This podcast felt like I was at my high school awards banquet
Wemby is the DPOY and ROTY. JJ just made the point when Wemby is off the floor worst defense. When he's on the court top 5 defense. But he still gives it to Gobert whether Rudy is on or off the floor the defensive rating stays similar. Give Wemby both awards he was on a terrible team and played well and kept getting better.
And it's not a "top5" award, it's the best defensive player of the year. And Gobert is better than Wemby in literally every aspect except blocks. Gobert created the defensive mentality for the Wolves, which lead them to the nr1 defense in the league. Wemby on the other hand, is 2nd in the league on turnovers.
That's a lie Wemby has him smoked in all categories accept for not being on a winning team.
@@Meta4XReaL Are you stupid? Players shoot on average 5-8% WORSE vs Gobert. He's ahead in literally every defensive metric. Wemba has him on offense, but the award is DEFENSIVE player notthing else. Oh, and Gobert has better rating with 5 more min played per game, less turnovers in that time and 2 more rebounds per game. Gobert's defense wins games. Wembys doesnt. Go read what "defense" means.
Wemby has almost twice as many Steals, Deflections and Blocks as Gobert, in less minutes. His blocks end up in Spurs hands at an unheard of rate. He effects more 3's than any centre. He should also get defensive credit for his ability to start fastbreaks. Wemby and Joker are the only big guys who do that so well. They turn a defensive rebound or block onto a quick outlet pass which creates easy points. Gobert doesn't have that ability and its an important part of being a defender.
@@addytrolla2535 Incorrect. Gobert leads the defensive winshares by a mile, almost double of Wemby. And steals? Jokic averages more steals than Wemby, so he's a defensive player candidate? The only metric Wemba has is blocks where he leads by a lot. Opponents score on average 30.9p in the paint vs Gobert. They score 32.4 vs Wemby. Opponents average 49.2% from 2 and 36% from 3 vs Gobert. They shoot 54.6 from 2 and 36.9% from 3 vs Wemby. Gobert has 697 defensive rebounds. Wemby has 594. So no, stop smoking what you're smoking. Gobert is BY FAR the better defender. Oh and the most important part? Gobert's defense makes a difference.

JJ either blacked out and forgot about ADs existance or JJ has agenda against AD. I would say eye test AD is best deffender in the world so if AD lacks stats AD at the WORST should be on 2nd DEF team.
He absolutely just blanked and forgot, that’s the only explanation lmfao
For the first time in his career, AD was not an elite 1-on-1 defender this year. He was a shot blocking machine as a help defender, but on the ball, mid-level guys were torching him. The coaches even took him off of top guys (guys he would have defended in the past) in-game so he could roam for shot blocking opportunities instead of getting beat. That's not fiction. Watch the games.
@@viliusvaisvila4510it’s simple. If he acknowledges how great Davis has been, he can’t say “lebron doesn’t have enough help”. If Luka throws a great pass to PJ Wash and PJ misses the shot is that Luka's fault? If Jokic is setting his teammates up all night with great passing and they keep missing and lose the game is that Jokic's fault? As far as DPOY it's not a team defense award. It's for the best defensive PLAYER.
Going back to MVP, the voting has become so convoluted and it's because of the media. They put the team success in there and for yrs now they've created narratives too. If Wemby wins it this year as a rookie he'll probably win it, or be at least the heavy favorite, every year throughout the next decade. So give it to Gobert this year.
@@Emicks11 spurs sucked, not relevant

I was also very confused when he said that?? Bro just contradicted himself
JJ is too involved in Media now to tell the truth all the way xD He would love to say Wemby but he's in the realm of people who have to work with the narratives now sadly
It's because the Timberwolves are an amazing defensive team all around. If Wemby was on the Twolves the on/off defensive difference would be similar.
Then he didn’t put AD in all-defensive, and starts justifying his choice for AD instead of Wemby on 3rd team all-nba because of his defense. Kind of confusing.
He was saying that despite that fact, he still wants to credit Gobert for the best defense
Jalen Brunson, not being mentioned as most improved, shows how people just can't think outside the narrative box.

He is from an individual standpoint the spurs are a top 5 defense when he's on the court and bottom 5 when he's off. The wolves barely get worse cus they have an entire team full of good to great defenders besides KAT none of them are weak and even he's been better than usual on that side of the ball. The dpoy has always been real weird, sometimes it's stat based others a combination of that plus being good overall as a team
everyone scared to give DPOY to a rookie. between that and no mention of AD in the top-10 one has to wonder if JJ understands defense at all
Too many people use the "best defender on a top team" bullshit. Wemby is clearly the more impactful defensive player.

The NBA should out an official definition for every award.
DPOY for example. Does team defense affect the award? Or is it an individual award? The people voting have no clue. That is a huge issue that should be solved asap.
They lack logic. We have stats that show on and off the court Defensive rating.
How would that work exactly? People really need to think about this and not just say stuff. Let's say for MVP the say stats are 55% team success 45%. Percentage of what exactly? And who would agree on those percentages? That would make people whine even more. Or why just those two variables, why not more? Well, which ones? Which stats are we counting? What about supporting cast, both quality and them missing time? We have BBallreference that spits out a percentage for each top candidate, but it's a dumb thing to do. Literally impossible to exactly define, so I'm flabbergasted why is it a problem to have many individuals have their own weighted system for all of this and place their votes based on that. It's not perfect, it literally can not be by the sheer amount of variables. The solution is more voters to try to even out the biases, not the artificial "definition"
The discussion of these awards are the most valuable part for the NBA. They want the uncertainty.

Nice
Bc Luka clearly had a better season, average 34, 10, 9 compared to Jokic 26, 9, 12

Mavs had way more injuries including Kyrie missed 24 games, starting center Lively missed 27, Maxi Kleber missed 39 games,
Josh Green missed 25 games,
Dante Exum missed 27 games

You even said it yourself that Rudy has help and their team doesn't suffer much without him on the floor.
Wemby literally makes the defense great and their defense is terrible when he isn't playing.
What is this logic? Make it make sense
Wemby on awful team, Rudy was the lynchpin on the best defensive team and 4th best record in NBA. Rudy had incredible stats, but was also actually on the court more than Wemby was. On/Off stats for wemby are impressive, but he was minutes restricted, meaning his impact was also smaller overall than it could have been for his team.
