      Or maybe Gobert is just better? Wemby is great and deserving of top 3 DPOY, probably even the runner up but Gobert overall is more impactful on defense. Not only is he a great rim protector like Wemby but he also is better on-ball against other elite centers and he commands the defense in a way Wemby isn't capable of yet. Just like there are guys that have the intangibles to run an offense, there are guys who have the intangibles to run a defense and Gobert is one of the best ever at it.
      Check the drtg on/off splits for the other Minnesota starters, literally all of them are negative. One of the biggest reasons for the small dropoff is that they have great defenders on the 2nd unit. Without Rudy that starting unit would be subpar defensively. I believe the Spurs went from 30th to 22nd of defense this year. TWolves went from 28th to 10th and now to 1st with Gobert. Consider this: the last time a player from a team with a defensive rating outside the top 5 won the Defensive Player of the Year award was 17 years ago. The lowest-ranked defense for a DPOY winner ever was 16th. Currently, the Spurs rank 22nd in defensive rating. It begs the question whether it's fitting to award DPOY to a player leading a team with a defense in the bottom third. It's akin to suggesting MVP honors for players whose teams miss the playoffs. Also I'd argue that as much as the teams defense being bad isn't Wembys fault that also makes Wembys' on/off differentials inflated due to the shortcomings of the bench, notably the absence of a reliable backup center.

    • @soapsoapsoapsoap2664
      @soapsoapsoapsoap2664 Před 8 dny +3

      Wemby would be a historically awful DPOY. His team would have the worst defense ever for a DPOY winner, the least amount of wins for a DPOY winner. He definitely has more gravity than Rudy, a better perimeter defender too. However the point of the game is to win, and Wemby’s team is awful. Just cause the award says “Defensive Player” doesn’t mean it’s just about the player, it’s never been about one thing but how that one thing affects the team as a whole.

      @@lukelabenski It shouldn't matter when it comes to these awards. The media created this winning must factor into all these player specific awards and fans fell for it big time. JJ just said MVP is 60% team performance. How tf does that make sense? A great player controls himself and can set teammates up with great passing but if they miss that effects team performance and that isn't the great players fault.
      If Luka throws a great pass to PJ Wash and PJ misses the shot is that Luka's fault? If Jokic is setting his teammates up all night with great passing and they keep missing and lose the game is that Jokic's fault? As far as DPOY it's not a team defense award. It's for the best defensive PLAYER.
      Going back to MVP, the voting has become so convoluted and it's because of the media. They put the team success in there and for yrs now they've created narratives too. Like "So and so deserves a MVP." Wtf is that? No one deserves the MVP. They earn the MVP through their play. But fans have become more casual and dumber so they go right along with this crap and many of em even repeat it like you did. In this vid JJ even said team success factors into the 1st team all NBA. That's insane. JJ said "How I view MVP and 1st team all NBA is a little different." No. There should be a criteria and this is where the media has severely screwed this all up. There are media members out there who rarely watch an entire NBA game voting on these awards. Make that make sense.

And who would agree on those percentages? That would make people whine even more. Or why just those two variables, why not more? Well, which ones? Which stats are we counting? What about supporting cast, both quality and them missing time? We have BBallreference that spits out a percentage for each top candidate, but it's a dumb thing to do. Literally impossible to exactly define, so I'm flabbergasted why is it a problem to have many individuals have their own weighted system for all of this and place their votes based on that. Good list JJ but a question:
    Why all these arguments for Wemby as ROTY talking about stats and little minutes he played, overlooking standings but when it comes to DPOY you ignore all of these in favor of Rudy
    Wemby by stats and eye test was DPOY as a rookie, which would have significant value in GOAT discussion in the future.

    Jaden McDaniels should be 1st team All-defense, leaving him off all together is a huge snub. Every night he's stopping the best players in the NBA, he should be recognized for his impact.

      @@SamuelBlackMetalRider That happens if your backup is not even at G-League level. Or if you play your starters by far the most of any team in the league, by a mile!. 4 Denver starters are in the Top10 of plus minus (Murray only top20 because of injuries), Denver plays all Bench lineups, of course the starters look way better in advanced stats. Not to mention that specially defensive advanced metrics (DBPM, def WS) highly favor Big man. Or why do you think only 3 guards are in the Top20 of both stats? The Denver starters played over 900 minutes together this season in 46 games.

      So Jokic won MVP because the Nuggets won 7 more games than the Mavs?
      Nice
      Bc Luka clearly had a better season, average 34, 10, 9 compared to Jokic 26, 9, 12
      “Oh but Jokic had better advanced stats” well pretty easy to do when Nuggets have no back up center. And play Jokic with one of the best starting lineups in the NBA, then bring in a terrible bench lineup who Jokic never plays with.
      Mavs had way more injuries including Kyrie missed 24 games, starting center Lively missed 27, Maxi Kleber missed 39 games,
      Josh Green missed 25 games,
      Dante Exum missed 27 games
      Also Gafford and Washington got their after the deadline to only play 29 games each on the Mavs

      Y’all can twist tf out of the advanced stats all you want, they prove Jokic is more efficient & more valuable. As in MOST VALUABLE PLAYER.

    Wemby not being your #1 pick for Defensive player of the year is crazy
    You even said it yourself that Rudy has help and their team doesn't suffer much without him on the floor.
    Wemby literally makes the defense great and their defense is terrible when he isn't playing.
    What is this logic? Make it make sense

    • @Phriedah
      @Phriedah Před 14 dny +4

      Wemby on awful team, Rudy was the lynchpin on the best defensive team and 4th best record in NBA. Rudy had incredible stats, but was also actually on the court more than Wemby was. On/Off stats for wemby are impressive, but he was minutes restricted, meaning his impact was also smaller overall than it could have been for his team.

      @@penkima4923 This isn't true when the numbers are broken down for when Wemby was actually on the floor. For instance, the bulk of Embiid's 70 points were scored against the Zach Collins line up. Most of these games were when Wemby was on a minutes restriction, so that's how it worked it.

    The only thing I'm not buying is selecting SGA in the second all defensive. I get the reason behind it, but if you want to acknowledge OKC as a defensive team get the best defender there (Chet or Dort), not the star
