I took a citroen 2CV with three other mates in over the Hardknott pass. It was 1st gear but it did it and was worth it to see the 4x4 drivers faces parked on the highest point. The 2CV was the only car available to hire within a 50 mile radius of where i live due to peek times. Made me Respect the Citroen 2CV. Now i have a Polo G40.
Our club did this last weekend. 10 MINI's, 22 people and 44 sweaty palms. Brilliant road. Can't wait to go back and do it again. It is however a little disturbing when there are 10 of you in convoy and you know all it'll take is one to stop on the 1 mile incline part and you're knackered.
i had someone tell me that they once went up such a steep slope that the car stopped and started rolling backwards haha. an suv too. yet these tiny cars with barely any HP are making it up such steep slopes.
+FrightfulAccountant Right on, there's no reason to buy these cheap new cars when there is plenty of quality 2nd hand cars around. Got my current Volvo 850 T5 for £900 over a year ago.
Hyundai Atos is the main car used by taxi drivers here in Bogotá, but here the engines have about 20% less power because of the altitude and most of the taxi owners prefer to use Vehicular Gas instead of petrol so there's 20% less power also... The result is that those cars can pull as well as one can riding a bike... Many foreigners when they come here they're just amazed of how crappy our taxis are...
Proton Savvy actually have Renault Twingo 1.2L 8 valve engine(older design) under the hood with Lotus-tuned suspension. The old Twingo have been sold over one million units in the world with not bad reputation. Thus, Savvy cannot be bad in engine reliability.
For 5000 Euro, you can get an E39 BMW 530d that will wag it's tail on that road, seat your large mates in comfort, satisfy most of your furniture shopping needs and look cool doing it. Splurge a bit more and get a Mercedes E320 CDI... With a simple remap, you can pump that baby up to 230hp and more than enough torque to keep you sliding... Splurge even a bit more and get the savage V8 Mercedes E420 CDI... My next project/ weekend/ garage princess car. That thing has enough torque to spin the earth! Drove one that was 370hp. It blew my mind. I need one in my life!
Well it's actually sensible to have 2 cylinders if you've only got 500cc, having more cylinders means each cylinder is smaller reducing its torque. Torque is far more important than power in the real world, e.g pulling up a hill.
Ffordd Pen Llech is the steepest in the UK, signposted as 40% The road to Llandonna beach on Anglesey is way steeper than 30% too, as are many other roads in Wales, let alone the rest of Britain and I'm pretty sure Wales hasn't gained independence yet.
Book of World Records have recently officially named Ffordd Pen Llech as the steepest street in the whole world at 37.45% beating the one previously held in New Zealand which was Baldwin Street at 35%.
it's the truth, the corvettes are astonishing for their price on a track, but on the road they're very woeful. the interior is a burger-tray (wrapped in leather if you so choose), the ride'll break your back, and the driveline is much too harsh. so is the clutch. so is the gearchange, although i think these were fixed with the introduction of the ls3.
I go over it in hire cars quite frequently. Worst I've driven over there was a 1-series BMW. Stiff suspension meant the wheels bounce on the slightest uneven bit of surface. On the hairpins, the surface is like a cheesgrater. So on the steepest sections, grip is lost and the stability control cuts power. The inside of the hairpin bends towards the top are way beyond 30% - the average round those may be 30%, but the tarmac on the inside basically flows down the hill over time.
What do u expect? The car was made so that it can handle the roads in Malaysia which are quite hilly and some place doesn't even have a road to begin with
Well the microcar isn't an actual car, in France it's classed as a cyclecar, it's the french equivalent of the Reliant Robin. You don't need a driving licence to drive it but it can only go at 45kmh and can't use the highway
***** I have got two clios one with a 16v and one with an 8v. The 8v is rapid! 1,2,3 gear is unreal. But it struggles keeping up with hills in 4th 5th gear. Where the 16v is fine all the way through. And also the 16v has a nicer 3/4 gear for overtaking
Jamie Earl My mum had a 16v Clio a few years ago, it was a very reliable car until the last year or so, when it started having all sorts of different gremlins.
My moms friend had a Suzuki alto back in the day, if I'm not mistaken it was 850cc 3 cylinders. Climbing some hill in Jamaica 3 people would have to come out and the driver would meet us at the top of the hill, sad! That car was no bigger than a washing machine lol
That's nice. It's a great price for a great car. I'm sure the quality of the car is also better than it's competitors. I personally own a 09' Hyundai sonata I got last year. Great car.
Mustang, you are partly right. If two otherwise identical cars have exactly the same gearing & accellerate in the same gear from the same speed & revs, then the one that produces the most torque at that revs will start to accellerate first. Bhp continues to rise after the torque has peaked, only because the engine gains revs at a faster rate than the torque recedes. If revs & torque gained & lost respectively in a uniform manner, then Bhp would remain constant.
If we were to take ryanas's example of the Koenigsegg CCR, with its 806 bhp & 920 nm, (679 lbs/ft) & attached it direct via a clutch to the stationary crankshaft of Boadicea, then took the car engine to peak power revs, - then despite the car exceeding the bhp of the steam engine by many times, it would require only a whiff of steam through the cylinders for the traction engine to drag the car engine's revs down & stall it in under a second. Now THAT'S muscle!
I've took artics fully freighted 44tonnes up Sutton Bank, takes a lot of torque to get up there but modern trucks have bucket loads of torque nowadays. It's keeping traction that's the usual problem. If a vehicle has the torque and right gearing with good tyres going up steep hills should be achievable, it will put stress on a vehicle though, something to bear in mind
Your right, he has no passion in his voice. I know he is testing crap cars, but do it with some heart at least. Top Gear would have fitted tow bars and then made them try and pull a JCB Fastrac up there !!! I cant wait for season 11 of Top Gear to start !
When Boadicea switches over to simple working (full boiler pressure fed to both high & low pressure cylinders) she generates 11877 lbs/ft, (about 6 times the torque of the most powerful truck tractor units) - at the same 200 rpm, she would then develop 452 bhp. So, as you can see, torque is the real strength of an engine rather than bhp, since no matter how much power it develops, it will be defeated & stalled as soon as the resistance exceeds the maximum torque figure. That's why we need gears!
Cont, There is a steam traction engine called Boadicea. She develops 4335 lbs/ft of torque working compound. (exhaust steam from high pressure cylinder driving the larger low pressure cylinder) At 200 rpm, she could therefore make 165 bhp. A 1 litre sportsbike making 80 lbs/ft of torque would need 10850 rpm before 165 bhp is achieved. If the bike engine were geared 54 times lower than the traction engine, it could also pull 140 tons uphill, at 2 mph, but its life expectancy would be in minutes!
@tilerman I once owned a 1963 split screen also, when going up steep hills i'd say a prayer first and if i was heading into the wind i'd just give up. Miss my camper van C** 266C..but she's still on the road (somewhere in the uk).
@thedean64 It's not a ripoff, fifth gear actually came out because topgear had low rating and they tried to rejuvinate show back in 2001 or 2001 i'm not sure xD. The year this show started, topgear was cancelled for year as far as I know too, but I stand to be corrected

If it was wet I doubt any car could get up it (unless 4wd)
I find the MC2 terrifying, because the only reason anyone would own one is if they have a bike licence and know they couldn't pass a car test. Cost wise you could do a coures, test and buy a real car for less than they cost, so if you knew you could you would. I drive, ride motorbikes and pedal cycles, have seperate certification for first 2 and commute on pedal machine because it's faster than a car and keeps my old heart healthier. Compared to the MC2 I would be faster on foot.
If you've read my previous comment then you will realise some of the amazing bargains you can pick up on the used car market. A new entry spec Seat Ibiza starts at about £9000, frankly it's a rip off, in my local Autotrader magazine you can pick up numerous Ford Focus ST's which are about 4-5 years old, all with low mileage, a top example is a 2008 Ford Focus 2.5 ST-2, only 29,800 miles,6 speed manual,Privacy Glass, ABS, A/C, Xenon lights, Sony radio/CD, HPI Clear, all for £7,440
Once took a turn in greece and ended up a road that was almost too steep for the car i was driving. A fully packed renault twingo with 60hp. Had to band it in first and floor it, and still the revs dropped. Luckely i made it because i had some momentum. I would never have made it from a standing start.
Perhaps I will,Im planning a MC trip to England this summer :-) Im aware that you cant really see it on film, but try the 3d feature on "Google Earth",and tilt the wiew.Still doesnt look that steep to me,but theres also a matter of where the road is placed in the terrain, and how the corners are made..So I guess I'll have to see for myself then. :-)
cont' if a 2 litre petrol engine has a torque of 150 lbs ft, then it would need 3500 rpm before 100 bhp is achieved to the diesel's 2000. This is why diesels take off so quickly in the higher gears without needing to change down. The above petrol would need to go down to 4th, or even 3rd, to keep up with the diesel accellerating in 5th. This is why petrols are given much shorter gearing throughout, to even up the horsepower a little at a given speed.
cont' in other words, if a 2 litre turbodiesel produces a torque peak of 262 lbs/ft @ 2000 rpm, it will be making 100 bhp. If the torque then drops to 131 lbs/ft @ 4000 rpm, it will still be making 100 bhp. Half the torque, twice the revs.
Actually coolerdude, you & ryanas are both a little wide of the mark. A 500 bhp car with 200 lbs/ft will be every bit as fast & accellerative as the 500 lbs/ft version.. Provided that the weaker torque version is kept at the max power revs at which it develops 500 bhp. It will only be slower at lower revs than peak power. Bhp is the product of torque & revs. Therefore torque determines the revs at which the engine will develop its max power. Cont..
I really don't see the point in buying a new budget car like this, because lets be honest for 5-6 grand you would only get an entry spec model and I don't think anyone wants to be seen driving around in an entry spec model. It's difficult to get a good new car for under 10 grand never mind 6 grand. But I've been looking in my local Auto Trader and for the same price as a new Seat Ibiza you can buy a top spec 2002-2003 BMW M3 or M5 with about 80,000 miles with change to spare. Truly amazing
They missed the fun part - trying to stop the damn thing as you come down the other side of the mountain. I managed to cook the brakes on my shitty old Fiesta, and all I had in the back was camping gear.
Hell..they need to try this road in an 84 plymouth reliant with it fully loaded....The poor thing would lurch 5 feet and say "meh, fuck it, i give up" xD
quite surprising... your the first american i encountered to admit that... my american friends here would totally say otherwise... but i guess your taste for cars is better than ours... we are just in it for the speed... Peace...
Funnily enough, the steepest road in Britain is actually Ffordd Pen Llech. It is a street in Harlech, Wales. Its sign says 40% average gradient.
It's only a few hundred feet though so no challenge at all compared to the two and a half miles of 1:3 blind hairpin bends Hardknott Pass presents.

Let’s face it. The real star of Fifth Gear are the Protons.
Nice to know the engine in the Proton is the same engine in 2000+ present 1.2 Clios, and Dacia Sandero.

@123dodgecharger how so? because i find them quite good for everyday use
Proton Malaysia
a fucking 1.5 diesel 106 with a caravan on the back could make it up that
What happens if you go over 88 mph in one of those?
Hell..they need to try this road in an 84 plymouth reliant with it fully loaded....The poor thing would lurch 5 feet and say "meh, fuck it, i give up" xD
@hardertom I'd love to try it a night too. Super scary!

Riding this today
Where is the steep part?
The last car is actualy a moped car in the dutch :P And you can drive them with only a moped license

The presenter's Estuary English is quite reminiscent of Dr. Who.
quite surprising... your the first american i encountered to admit that... my american friends here would totally say otherwise...
but i guess your taste for cars is better than ours... we are just in it for the speed... Peace...
they complement each other :)
