I once held the likes of Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell and Paranoia Agent as my favorite anime series, the upper echelon of anime goodness. But now I have bore witness to the true paragon of storytelling, the crowning jewel upon the crown of masterful animation, the sum total of mankind's existence on this planet: Mad Bull 34. This video is a good time capsule of where internet comedy was in the late 2000s to early 10s. It's still obviously Sage, but what's focused on and the nature of the jokes has really changed.

surprisingly though, i don't see mad bull as a bad person, despite being a corrupt cop. yes, he excessively uses deadly force. but, he only really does it to those who deserve it. ie rapists or high-profile criminals. he isnt a very GOOD person, but honestly he seems weirdly likable. that, and he uses grenades as a jock strap. and while, yes he runs a prostitution ring, he's never one to actually condone rapists. in fact, half of who we see meet his wrath WERE rapists. this is a corrupt cop that, surprisingly isn't all that bad a guy. and someone like him could only really exist HERE.
This series could actually be an interesting study of how other countries view America, or indeed how one culture's view of another is shaped by the media imported from that culture. Just think about what kind of things this anime says about how Japan views America. Or how we view Japan solely through anime.

The manga is even gorier and takes a bit more time to make "sense" of what's going on this really is an over the top series that kindoff satirizes and mocks american movies as well as making an extreme seinen my favorite part of the manga is when sleepy holds off the police station like in that movie assault on precinct 13

madbull 34 is insane and Gloriously so. i say madbull is one of the anime that bad but gloriously bad just like movie dungeon and dragon, everyone agree that it is bad but every one must admit it is really really fun movie. that is madbull 34 for me

The way I interpret it, this is is an author's satirical indictment of violent Hollywood action movies and the values they promote, even down to the rampant misogyny. I'd put it in the same vein as Robocop, who also tackled similar themes in a satirical fashion. I believe the down-to-earth Japanese American rookie who idolizes his violent coworkers can be compared to Japanese audiences idolizing violent Hollywood action characters and the movies they are featured in. I figure that if the author had intended to play this straight, the Japanese character would have been the big-damn hero who was shooting and fucking everything in his path, and the blond would have been his rookie sidekick.

As trashy as this show is, I really enjoyed it for what it is at face value... but what in the actual fuck is up with that ending? I was fully expecting it to all be a ruse by Sleepy to kill the woman or at the very least arrest her. It was completely out of character for him (and also just plain fucking weird), as well as totally reversed the tone of the show. I could kinda understand it if they introduced her from the start of the show and established the connection she has with Sleepy. They must have said "fuck it" and gave the reigns to a random intern, then shipped it out the door just to finally end the series. Has to be the worst case ever of "final act syndrome" in my opinion.
