    For better or worse, this anime is chock-full of Araki's standard storytelling devices.
    For one, the fact that characters spout out blatantly obvious information works in manga, but not in an anime adaptation. We all read at our own pace, so some people might need a quick explanation of what just happened in the last page if it wasn't clear enough to them (thanks Speedwagon); when it comes to anime, however, you can very clearly see what's going on because the anime has a set and viewable pace.
    Although, to be fair, the more recent JoJo anime adaptations also have scenes with characters spouting information that's blatantly obvious, but I think it works more there because the overly-dramatic presentation helps prevent things from getting stale (which is why the 90's OVA kinda fails in terms of capturing the original tone, even if the animation is gorgeous at times).
    10:16 Also, it's nice to know that Araki had a hatred for dogs even before JoJo, lol.

    • @brayanargandonaflorentino548

      Actually, funny story about the dog and cat deaths in his stories: the dude mostly Includes their deaths by the hands of s***heels because he believes only s***heels would kill cats and dogs. Dude loves pets, hence the Araki trope of showing how evil someone is by having them kill a dog. In fact, the only villain of his that not only didn't kill a dog but in fact cared for one was Kars in JoJo part 2.

  • @jamg25
    @jamg25 Před 8 lety +35

    I think the reason why exposition like this is prevalent in anime, is because the Japanese talk in a very roundabout manner. That is why whenever something strange happens the explanations are overly stated.
    This problem is more noticeable in works that adapt from manga, because in manga still images sometimes is not enough to explain what is going on, which is a staple of Araki, the creator of Baoh and JJBA.

      Bennett was bullshitting to make his point about how supposedly "legendarily bad" this OVA is. The point of the dog getting hurt by the tiger was directly explained: "Baoh exerts its greatest destructive power when an attack is made on the host's body". That was a part where the explanation was NEEDED and told us why the experiment unfolded the way they did, yet he skipped past it to trick the audience and shit on a plotting mistake that didn't even exist!
      I'll agree assassination scene was poorly done in the anime; in the manga it was clear they were RUNNING AWAY fast and being followed. So yeah, a fuck-up.
      It's true Araki has a writing problem. I think he was trying to imitate the narration of the Violence Jack manga, meant to give the story a legendary, almost biblical atmosphere (the native american guy looked almost exactly like Jack in the Baoh manga) but didn't quite get it right so it felt redundant. BUT, and this is a huge BUT, I still think Bennett is as usual turning one flaw into something that makes a mostly well-directed, exciting and well-made OVA into a "so-bad-it's-good" The Room-tier abomination. The over-explaining is goofy but this is a good anime and a good manga, beyond the writing, just as the early parts of Jojo are: the plotting is as engaging as it can get given the short length, the art is cool and iconic and overall it has a very skillful and memorable execution. The animation, storyboarding and overall cinematography kick ass, and the manga shows great understanding of composition, visual storytelling and iconic, memorable design. And hey, you know who also had BIG problems with over-explaining, unnatural exposition, and that sort of thing? Osamu Tezuka and Buronson of Fist of the North Star fame. Yet Tezuka's work kicks ass, as does Fist of the North Star, and no one shits on those because there's no epic meme based around hating them.
      The part where the assassin pops out of Sumire's notebook was a super creative and cool idea; good in the manga, even better with its use of color in the anime. But Bennett instead mocked it because he has zero understanding of the things that make a visual medium, well... visual. I don't mean just basic shit like "the animation is fluid, the art is solid and detailed" (though those things do add to the quality); it's the understanding of the emotional and narrative impact that the visuals will have on the audience which Araki is a master at. Works like Baoh are ones where the action and expressionistic visual execution of the drama becomes the focus, and where style becomes substance. The posing in the manga kicks ass and the anime did an amazing job at replicating Araki poses in the middle of fast action.
      tl;dr yeah the writing is redundant and silly but the same goes for other manga classics. This OVA & manga still kick ass and have many unironically amazing qualities.

      @@deadstockparadise5898 Some of Bennett's exaggerations into sheer and utter madness territory is what gets me to watch these things. Just in case you think he's scaring people away or only bringing in the memelords.
      Me, I'm going to watch it because the design work looks solid, and there's a character who looks like Violence Jack with a He-Man haircut. Also, anime that embodies an entire genre archetype sounds amazing.

And the reason you shouldnt skim over the story is because you completely miss some really good fights and funny moments not to mention some fights helped a lot of character development that doesnt translate well to their adaptations in the OVA (Seth, Pet Shop, Oingo, High Priestess, Judgement) it's just not a faithful adaptation to the original and it suffers a lot from it

      And yes I copypasted this three times because I want to get this point across to Bennett's fans.

    Loved this review! The problem with this OVA is that it is meant to be violent and grim but, as with most of Hirohiko Araki's creations, it should be tempered with silliness. Just compare the Jojo OVA with the Stardust Crusaders anime; they are almost the same, but one is more complete and rich than the other because it does not exclude the weirdness and humor to make a more standard experience. That's how I see it anyway...

    You know, I somehow stumbled across the original language version of this on youtube. The doctor's lines are delivered way more believably in that. Like, the "Baoh has a laser cannon!" line in the original version is delivered with a kind of breathless, "Oh, shit, where did he get that?" tone. Same with the "Water's leaking out of the capsule line." He delivers it with a sense of dawning realization, like he's putting the pieces together and figuring out just how fucked he really is.
    And it makes it WORSE! The English track at least has a hilariously bad quality to it that makes it entertaining. Having the actors actually trying to deliver good performances just leaves you with a movie that has nothing to entertain you.

    The thing with the vision of the dude's head coming out of the page is directly lifted from the manga (by Hirohiko Araki, better known for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) including the smoke coming out of his mouth. It managed to be a lot creepier and less silly in the manga though. Also in the english translation of the manga the little girl was just named Violet with no exposition given on her name. The manga was much better though because the unexplained stuff in the anime was explained in the manga. It really needed to be a series because there was just too much stuff to cram into a single OAV.
    I can't remember if it was also in the anime but at the end of the manga Violet has a vision that she will meet Ikuro again when she is 18 (he is apparently hibernating at the bottom of the lake)

    I don't know why, but I find it kind of surprising that the manga this was based upon was done by Hirohiko Araki. I mean I guess I can understand, it being his first published work why its very rough around the edges, but I always felt Araki had a talent for putting his own unique spin on archetypical elements. Though that may be more me speaking on behalf of the Araki that gave us JoJo rather than the Araki that made Baoh.

    But CZcams, I'm sitting at my computer, typing on a keyboard, typing a comment expressing my opinions on Baoh. It is my intention to have various people from around the world that I've never met read and subsequently agree / disagree with my opinion. While this is a solid alibi, it is in actuality a front to get those people to only agree with my opinion and like this comment, while completely ignoring or deleting comments that don't stroke my ego. This is so that I can achieve a meek sense of superiority over my non-peers, as the people who read this comment have no affiliation with me, and will in most cases will never know me in a face-to-face and intimate manner!
    With all of these vital facts and precursors checked and accounted for, it is now time for me to voice said opinion and await the hoards of eager people declaring me their new prophet, and that opinion is:
    I, personally, didn't find Boah enjoyable.

      I have read and reread your comment, and have processed its various components, sorting and organizing all implied context and rebuttals.After processing this information, I have queried my brain, and generated a response based on all previous experiences and memories I possess. After rigorous sorting and weighing of individual components, I have extrapolated a response with appropriate amounts of malice, spite, and subtle jealousy, which I will now recite:
      I do not agree with your opinion of me, as it is based on observation, not fact. Also, I comment on my assumption that your genitals are inferior in size and capabilities when compared to the average of all members of your sex.

    • @Egalitariat-likesecretariat
      @Egalitariat-likesecretariat Před 8 lety +1

      Noremaad
      I have a query; how does an individual query one's brain? This inquiry is borne of the commonly-held scientific interpretation that the workings of the brain constitute the human perception of the mind. With this in mind, it seems questionable that a person (with, we must assume, a functioning mind) would be able to seek a query from his or her brain, rather than simply thinking a thought as per normal human procedure.
      Having interpreted your claims of 'sorting' and 'weighing' individual components of my prior statement as being a feeble excuse at attempting to sound wiser than you really are. The assumption that my genitals are, in fact, smaller than the norm of my gender, is mere baseless conjecture, which you have no method of proving one way or another. Based on this method of logical thought, I postulate that you are a Zaglossus attenboroughi, referred to in colloquial English as the Sir David's long-beaked echidna. Further, in reference to the species name, I deduce that your given name is Richard, and that this fact is the explanation for your fixation on the status of my own genitalia.
      I approve of the fact that our eloquent elocutions are guaranteed to engender befuddlement.

    • @Noremaad
      @Noremaad Před 8 lety +1

      HellChuggapri1
      Postulate not! Though you deduce with utmost scrutiny, I must make known variables previously sealed. For, I must admit for all to see, that my memories and experiences are not my own. A query, in earnest, of twenty-odd years of internet intake. Broken down to constituent parts, a veritable smorgasbord of crude vernacular, hemmed by a loosely understood lexicon, and filtered through an unrestrained tongue (digit?).
      As for our engagement, I do admit egregious wrongdoings. Being forthright, being taunted by your poised etiquette stirred some nonsensical affirmation of retribution from within. With due respect, I submit an unmodified commendation for your persistence in unparalleled lingual superiority.
      Alas, I can simply propagate no virgin subject, withholding trodden topography. And so, surely, do the victor go the spoils. Spoils I can only speculate of, however, as what is wrought of a cataclysmic bombardment of enigmatic banter, aside from a consensus en mass of preposterous obfuscation? Though, one could surmise that as precisely accurate.

    • @Egalitariat-likesecretariat
      @Egalitariat-likesecretariat Před 8 lety

      Indeed, though as many times as not, the journey itself is more worthy of one's experience than journey's end; and some joys, though fleeting, are worthy of their indulgence. So it is with discourse, especially discourse in such an auditorium as our current arena. That it serves no purpose save elocution is irrelevant.
      A respectful incline of the head, then, to a worthy adversary and (perhaps?) a burgeoning friend.
      Auf viedersehen.

No idea why my small town library had it, but it is definitely what sparked my interest in Japanese animation/comics and language. Not having grown up with comics or graphic novels, let alone manga, the trope-y, hackneyed writing seemed fresh, new, and exciting. It was dramatic, ridiculously violent, gorey as hell, and utterly alien... yet, the female lead was a young girl like me, making it very easy to slip into her shoes and thus get involved in the story. ....i suppose it also helped, that the boy is a sweet and lovable cutie with all the tragic back story, protective superpowers, and bishounen looks a pre-teen girl could want!
