The unexplained power boost was explained in the other two OVAs. Terry draws life force from the earth to get energy for his sempu ken or hado sempu ken in which he rotates his body and becomes a tornado (it looks as dumb as it sound). In the 2nd OVA he develops his super move, the power geyser which he used to defeat Mars.
I ll stil think of it as deus ex machina seeing as someone who watched only this OVA he/she/it would be confused as fuck or just go like "MEH dats some bullshit right there"

Why can't these fighting game stories simply be about characters who join a fighting tournament for money? Seriously! It should be that easy! Straight forward plot. Uncomplicated story. Easily understood motives. No need for a thinly veiled pretext for characters to fight one another. They're fighting for money, fame, and the chance to be crowned the world champion of badass fighters. That would be amazingly refreshing!
FrankLightheart I don't think it is that easy. Would you want to see a character who is only in the tournament for money win? You could say he needs to money to pay for an expensive operation of a family member or feed a starving village, but this would only work for a secondary caracter at best. The main character nees more motivation to win in order to create tension.
Schwarzer Ritter With a simple setup like that, it would give the movie more time to focus on the characters, their motivations, and their relationships with the other contestants. What if some of them are friends? How badly would they want to beat their friend to win the tournament? What if they don't like the current champion? They want to take their place. What if some of them cheat? What if some of them fight outside the ring? There is plenty of room for a premise like that to expand upon and play within.
Schwarzer Ritter The alternative, as it seems, is to have a nonsense plot about some villain's innanie plot to use a MacGuffin device of ultimate power to destroy/conquer the world. The plot holes in these stories are the size of the Grand Canyon. If you have a formal tournament (_like in Mortal Kombat_), then the premise and initial motivations are easy to grasp. People understand what contests are and why people have them. All the details from there (_why contestants enter, how the game is conducted, ulterior motives, etc._) can be explored within that framework.
What's funny about this is, I also watched this backwards a long time ago. I got the movie before the OVA first but then i realized what came first. This was about 15 years ago.
Terry has a real nack in fighting, even in the canon stories in game he's just really a very good fighter it's no wonder he can pull off a power up like that.

I don't know...he's just eccentrically narcissistic, one of my favorite kind of male villains in movies. He's cool cat. And Lacorn, Terry and Andy are sexy as jack. I didn't have a problem with Sulia(?). I only recently saw the first movie that is suppose to a back story for this one with Terry and the green hair girl and honestly I didn't need it. That movie bored me as well. I never played the games either so I just looking at this from a movie standpoint. But it's interesting how many cameos there are if you know who they are. Let's be fair here: the Fatal Fury movie is the best movie ever made that's based on a fighting video game. Sure, it's cheesy and there's pointless cameos, but the story is simple (and not a convoluted mess), and gets from point A to point B in a satisfying way. It's not going to win any movie awards, but it's entertaining. Also, I don't know what you have against effeminate male characters. They're guys and they wear lipstick, so what?
I don't know Sage, even when anime pull back on the art style to make the fights more fluid, it never really looks bad IMP, even when you slow them down. Scenes like those usually reflect the fast-paced action of the scene, so obviously the lack in detail in some areas make sense since that not where the main focus is, it's the fight itself. Heck, as much as I hate the Pain arc of Naruto Shit-poo-dumb, the fight with Pain was actually fitting. It was fight between two monsters, not two skilled ninja, and the spastic art style fit that fast moving violence.
Omg, someone else who understands the Naruto/Pain fight! I remember folks were complaining how Pain moved throughout the fight absolutely forgetting that it was an animated corpse being controlled by someone in a weird chakra machine. I thought it was perfectly executed.

There's also Karin Son, a dumb bimbo superheroine that is based off Son Wukong from the ancient Chinese story Tale of the Journey to the West (best known as the inspiration for the Dragon Ball franchise). Karin Son would eventually become a reused character in Ohbari's Angel Blade hentai OVA series, albeit with slightly shorter hair and a more thick, buxom body, among other things.

I don't know Sage, even when anime pull back on the art style to make the fights more fluid, it never really looks bad IMP, even when you slow them down. Scenes like those usually reflect the fast-paced action of the scene, so obviously the lack in detail in some areas make sense since that not where the main focus is, it's the fight itself. Heck, as much as I hate the Pain arc of Naruto Shit-poo-dumb, the fight with Pain was actually fitting. It was fight between two monsters, not two skilled ninja, and the spastic art style fit that fast moving violence.
Omg, someone else who understands the Naruto/Pain fight! I remember folks were complaining how Pain moved throughout the fight absolutely forgetting that it was an animated corpse being controlled by someone in a weird chakra machine. I thought it was perfectly executed.

Man Bennett, I really enjoyed your review, a lot of hilarious and valid points. However THIS is my favorite Fighting Game based anime flick. And in retrospect wish you have seen the 2 OVAS before getting to this, it would have put the pointless cameos in a better more relevant perspective... but still I have a blast watching your reviews, so cheers dude!

If you're familiar with Ohbari's Neo-Geo fighting game venture turned anime OVA Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer, you might also be aware of the character Shaia Hishizaki, a.k.a. Misty Shaia and Shaia Shu Silveianu. In case you're not, she's basically Mai Shiranui redesigned into a azure-maned, Japanese pop-star/stripper/Playboy bunny stereotype of a superheroine. There's also Karin Son, a dumb bimbo superheroine that is based off Son Wukong from the ancient Chinese story Tale of the Journey to the West (best known as the inspiration for the Dragon Ball franchise). Karin Son would eventually become a reused character in Ohbari's Angel Blade hentai OVA series, albeit with slightly shorter hair and a more thick, buxom body, among other things.
