The actual law enforcment lets them run around in tights and catch bad guys because they mean well and most of them know they're not judge and jury and DEFINATLEY not executioner. Which is why "heroes" like the Kate Shaw Manhunter and Peacemaker arn't really considered "superheroes" they're considered serial killers and are treated as such.
This reminds me of a conversation I once had with an old school Valiant comics fan and how he was upset how after Acclaim took over they basically started replacing certain hero characters in inappropriate ways. So similar to 8 Man After, Jack Boniface was replaced with Mike Leroi in Shadowman with the previous character being unceremoniously being killed offscreen. Miles Morales and Pre-Flashpoint Wally West is how you do legacy characters right everyone.

This is why the 90's were bad. Trying too hard to be brutal, and not at all capturing the charm of the original series. If I were to be in charge of a remake nowadays, I'd keep the transformation being triggered by lighting up a smoke. 8 Man would stick a special cigarette in his mouth, light it, and say, "Showtime!" while it dangled from his lips. Then he'd use all kinds of cool robot kung-fu and fight robots and mutants alike! Meanwhile he'd juggle a romantic relationship/rivalry with a femme-bot that has the mind of the daughter the man who turned him into a robot. She also has cool robot powers, too, like laser beam eyes! I think this could be a good series. Now we just need a good setting, a wisecracking (but charming) sidekick, and a reoccurring badass villain that makes all the panties drop.
In July of 2020 there's going to be a brand new 8-Man manga which is a crossover with Cyborg 009, aptly titled 9-Man Vs Cyborg 009. So we can official chuck this OVA into the garbage where it rightfully belongs.

And there's no way Hazama could have traces of Azuma's essence unless it was the exact same body he was inhabiting. And from how I see it, that's completely impossible. Think about this for a moment; Azuma simply vanished and was never seen or heard from again. And I don't think even Professor Tani even knows where he ran off to. And besides, Tani would have had to create an entirely new cyborg body from scratch in order for Hazama to become 8-Man at all. There's just no way Azuma could have been deleted from the brain's memory unless someone was able to catch him. So for all we know, Azuma could still be alive. But sadly, that was never resolved since there has never been any other anime adaptation of the series since 8-Man After. But at least the manga 8-Man Infinity continues the legacy. So contrary to what Sage said in his review, this is not where the series ends.
I think the idea is that only Sachiko thinks he was never seen or heard of again. What really happened was that Azuma couldn't handle he was a cyborg and went to the Professor, but he couldn't help him...so he erased his mind to put him out of his misery and kept the body.

The 8th Man films were not dark. That was from a copy of a copy of the original. Some of the episodes out there today are English dubs that I made in the 1980s using the original Japanese episode videos. I had recorded 8th Man on my reel to reel tape recorder right off the TV when it was originally aired in the 1960s. Fortunately, I had these audio recordings because after the 1970s most of the 16mm prints used to show the series in the 1960s were lost or destroyed. With the advent of the internet, more original 16mm prints started to show up in the early 2000s. I do have to take issue with the comment that the 1960s episodes themselves don't hold up today. There were many classic episodes touching on important and challenging themes. Some examples are found in "The Battle of the Brothers"', "Intercrime's Invincible Robot", "The Nuclear Witch", "Countdown to Zero", "Seven Days of Terror", "Belligerent Bodyguard", "The Living Statue", "Menace From Outer Space", 'Pounce, the Robot Tiger", "The Valcouns", "Mechania City", "The Solar Satellite", etc. One must not have a Woke mindset when watching these today as that mindset didn't apply then.

I watched this as a young teenager or so, and i absolutely loved it. All the pieces didnt need to make cohesive sense, I grew on up 90s cartoons, most cartoons had plenty of plot holes. Even if there's plenty of holes in the plot, i still love it. That part where he brings the homing missiles back to the one guy was one of the best scenes. This was back when I was introduced to vampire hunter D and robot carnival. So many good times!
And now I know where the music from the Orion/Streamline sizzle reel came from. Never saw this one back in the day and wasn't interested enough to track it down.

I loved it because it wasn't a romp in the kiddie pool as most animated shows were. Flawed, yes, but it's my guilty pleasure and that's enough to make it one of my favorites.
