- Sturgill Simpson recorded live by Music Fog at Marathon Recorders in Nashville during the 2011 Americana Music Festival & Conference. This is an unreleased song, exclusive to Music Fog, that was about one week old at the time of the recording. This song was later released on Sturgill's album High Top Mountain, listed as the full title of "Life Ain't Fair and the World is Mean." (Sunday Valley was Sturgill Simpson's band name before going by his namesake.)

Still listening in 2024??
Amen
Yep
Hell yah
You gd right brother
Yessir brother
Why can’t the pimps in Nashville realize, THIS is the country music we want to hear.
My thoughts exactly
Guess it sadly doesnt bring in enough cash like the pop ”country” garbage does
Yeah that crap is more digestible to a broader audience
100% brother this is real country
Cuz it aint about whats real, friend. Its about money and retaining control of what by rights belongs to someone else.
I’ve never come across a song that needs to be put on Spotify so bad. So much better than the album version. Incredible
That is one of my top songs of all time. Awesome
Amen bro
I’ll sing the shit out this gem when I’m alone in the car I swear to sweet Jesus I sound like sturgill especially when go as loud as she can go😊
I wish he’d release this version I agree with the other comment this is way better than the album version, but…life ain’t fair and the world is mean lol
I agree!!!!
Hopefully it’s put on Spotify soon!
Me as a grumpy old man to my grandkids in year 2052:
"Listen up you damn kids. Life aint fair... I'm still waiting for Sturgill to upload the YT version to Spotify."
Same hahaha
I do that to my daughters now lol
It is a much better version on CZcams in my opinion. the version on Spotify is to fast and doesn't have the same chugging guitar.
Still waiting.
This version is so much better than the album cut! Gritty, filthy, country. Love it!
Ted Jordan my country station plays this version instead of the album version.
Yess I was thinking the same thing!!
He just seems to put more emotion into it when he sang it here.
I would argue that the studio kills his sound. I love every live version of his music. If the label or whoever would just record him and these guys playing it would be a hit
3 years later and I think the bluegrass version is best
I literally can’t believe how good this song is
It’s perfect!
believe it !!!
It really is unbelievable.
Life ain't fair and his voice is mean
Life ain’t fair and the world needs more of this sound.
We need a full raw, dirty, and gritty outlaw album from him like this, i know his past albums come close but i want the sound from this video into a full album
10000% agree
Absolutely agree!!
Please lord!
Bruh. I would be surprised if he ever released another album. His condition probably won’t allow him to sing anymore
@@emmarian1 what happend to him just finding out about him
Why is this version not on Spotify? Miles better than the original one
I COMPLETELY AGREE
Fr
Agreed
LIGHT YEARS better
@@TravisPrybylskicompletely different init, this has got a much better flow to it than the original and it definitely needs re recording
That guitar and voice come together like cocaine and waffles

This dude is way better than anything on the radio .
You got that right!
Yes.
Sounds like bocephus in this song more than the others
Real Country ain't dead, they just quit playing it on the radio...
Trueeee😅
He's channeling Waylon hard. And I love it. Thank you Sturg for doing your part to keep country music alive!
Waylons guitar and Hanks voice I like it.
Nah definitely way more Waylon
@@grassy-qb6qc Yeah, you're right, the guitar and beat is Waylon, but voice is a little Hank Jr and Waylon mix.
He's tired of people comparing him to waylon but it's the truth

Jamie Johnson woke me up from my country nap. Sturgill just slapped me in the face. Awesome.
+Jeff Cantleberry This is one of the best comments i have ever read.
+Hayes Dennis not yet, but I'll have to check him out. thanks!
+Jeff Cantleberry More liked kicked me in the nuts. Thanks to Mojo Nixon and Joe Rogan.
We should grab a beer together.
Work some Colter Wall and Tyler Childers in that mix for more good times!
People think they aren’t into country until they hear this
I was turned on to Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers today by my son........I knew that boy was on the right path
Childers came out for blm and says us flag represents racism. He’s done at my house
Hell yeah man.....good son right there
@@neilwilliams350 Tyler simply sees two sides of the coin. If you cant understand that shit then you are lost. I live in Minnesota and that shit is fucked up and cops have killed black people here for no reason. Nobody should have to live in fear because of their skin color. You can like good music and stand up for your fellow man at the same time. I hate when blm loots stores and blocks highways but when real peaceful protests happen you cant morally dispute them. Everybody deserves to be treated equal and if you can’t see that then you are ignorant and part of the problem.
@@musc1esman You can also make good music and take a stand for the wrong thing like Tyler Childers recently did. You can also shoot a basketball better than most and take a stand for the wrong thing (entire NBA). Bottom line, BLM is a self identified Marxist organization responsible for critical race theory bull $hit, and they should not be supported by anyone who loves this country. Statistics show more cops have been killed in the line of duty (protecting you) than unarmed blacks killed by cops. White men are actually more likely to be killed by cops than blacks. Simple facts. You and people like you, in this case Tyler Childers, are actually manipulated sheep believing emotional nonsense put out by the talking snake fake news media. To use your own words and add Tyler to it, "If you can't understand that shit then you AND Tyler Childers are lost!"
All that said, I love Tyler's music and have been consuming it daily. However, lately it has been hard liking the music now that I know he is lefty BLM brainwashed sympathizer.
Signed,
Tennessee Mountain Man
@@neilwilliams350 when I heard him start going down that path I stopped the video because I didn't want his dumbass politics ruining his music for me. Then the next day a friend of mine told me what he said in full, so I went back and listened to the video it in its entirety. I feel like you, as much as I love his music I can't support him like before.
This man doesn’t get the recognition he deserves
I'm not sure he wants it. I think he just likes the music. He sorta tells everyone to piss off and leave him alone

How is this 10 years old and I’m just NOW hearing it?! Way better than so called current hits!
Sameeee
This is 20x better than any "country" hit thats been released recently.
That's cause today's radio shit sucks.
The album cut isn't as good as this version. (My guess why you aren't hearing it more). The album cut is faster and has a different vibe.
@@BryanHansen absolutely correct, he should re-release it with this mix.
Waylon quit rollin in his grave for a sec when he heard this. Keep fishin y'all
10 years and this still stands out.
Yep I can’t believe he doesn’t make country songs anymore 😢
@@opp_slider3223 uh yes he does??
nevermind what i said i just listened ti his new stuff thats awful
I have been listening to this man for 7+ years. Everyone's always saying he is channeling his inner "Waylon and Hank". I don't entirely disagree, but I hear ALOT of George Jones in his voice as well. That being said, Sturgill Simpson is the bridge to classic Outlaw Country music, for modern music lovers. I can't handle the radio pop country that we have been flooded with for over 20yrs. ..Sturgill, thank you my friend for restoring my country music ears. Much Love
Listen to some Texas Red Dirt country artists. Randy Rodgers, Stoney LaRue, Turnpike Troubadours, cross Canadian ragweed, etc. You'll find REAL country music alive and well between the red and rio grande rivers.
@@greggtrout hell yeah, ..thank you kindly
Ol hank jr n sturg needa make some good ol tunes
He reminds me a bit of Jerry Reed too.

Sounds incredible! Like Cash, Waylon & Hank all in one! This needs to be #1!!! Real country!!!
Just what I was going to say
Even Sturgill couldn’t keep making this kind of music
Move or you'll get pushed over Fluke Bryan and Florida-Georgia Crime because this is real country music! Sturgill and the boys here are bringing real country music back. No more bubble gum bro-country crap anymore! Mr. Simpson is the smartest and most talented man in country music today. And for that we thank you.

Deckie Deckie nothing like someone with some dick shit to say
On one end of the spectrum, you have Florida Georgia Line and Kane Brown, on the other end, you have Sturgill Simpson and Waylon Jennings.
He’s got that classic Cash guitar lick. LOVE it
This is the most country song I've heard in decades.
Ol' Sturg sounds even better live than he does on record.
Facts. How is it possible?

Best version of this song, I wish he would do another straight up country album
Im sure he will do more country stuff. He just wanted to get out of his comfort zone and do something different. I liked the new album but for sure like the country better!
Definitely good drinking music brother
good music isn't on the radio anymore, but it IS everywhere else
Damn right. We just have to look for it, but it is out there!!

Jeffrey Strickland oh yeah, I bought one of their cd's years back, had a bunch of good stuff on it, various artists, I forgot about that
Jeffrey Strickland I just mentioned this to another guys saying this version is better than the album. The Ranch plays this version for that very reason. RED DIRT BOY!
I wish I could like it more times
There aren't even any words to describe how good this is. 11 million views over the last 10 years.....a million of those are probably mine. Can't get enough.
As much of a country fan i am, i can't believe i just discovered Sturgill Simpson today like wtf. I'm disappointed in myself 😂

The guitar lines are so good. Not overproduced pop country

This song should be on the radio everyday! This is my top favorite song right now.
Sturgill is the country truth

An amazing artist who doesn't get enough credit in this pop country influenced generation. Keep it up outlaw country will rise again!
I know this is years later but he doesn’t need credit
@@ruseter84 he won a Grammy without having radio air time. That says a lot.

SO I HAVE GROWN UP AS COUNTRY AS A MAN CAN BE. I AM FROM ALABAMA. BORN AND RAISED. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SOUND. I ADMIT MY 18 YEAR OLD SON INTRODUCED ME TO THE SONG BECAUSE MY OPINION HAS BEEN THAT REAL COUNTRY HAD DIED. BUT IT'S NOT DEAD. LYRICS:
Well that label man said son now can you sing a little bit more clear
Said Your voice might be too country next to what they been hearin'
Can you sing a little more about outlaws and the way things used to be
Said you just worry about writin' them songs leave everything else to me
Well my daddy never wrote any old famous country songs
Papaw never stayed out raising hell with Haggard, Jones
But he raised a proud coal miners daughter and I'm proud to be her son
She told me boy I don't care if you hit it big, cause you’re already #1
That's the way it goes in this day and age
Well you ain't gotta read between the lines now you just gotta turn the page
Well the most outlaw thing that a man today can do is give woman a ring
And the way it goes, life ain't fair and the world is mean
Well I still got the wife and the dog but I swapped the truck out for a van
Gonna hit the road find the end of that long white line with a three-piece band
You won’t hear my song on the radio, see me on the CMA
But you can always find me in a smokey bar with bad sound and a dim lit stage
That's the way it goes in this day and age
Well you ain't gotta read between the lines now you just gotta turn the page
Well the most outlaw thing that I ever done was find a good woman give her a ring
And the way it goes, life ain't fair and the world is mean
Hero ❤
They need to pin these to the top 😂
So much soul. Top tier country music. Doesn’t get much better.
I could listen to this song on repeat for days and days and days....
This dude is pure badass.
I swear to god he’s the definition of what the true outlaws want for music again
This man is proof we can bring it back
Country music was needing somebody like this to come along. Take it back where it belongs.
How refreshing to see a young man singing country music that sounds like country music.
This sounds like the country music I was raised on. He resembles other people but definitely has a style all his own.
This song gives me goosebumps it’s so damn good!
That’s the way country music supposed to sound!!!!🎉
Only a telecaster can sound like that. Love it
