Country music ain't dead, they just stopped playing it on the radio
The radio's been a racket for decades now.
You damn right
Sure ain't dead, all ya here nowadays is weak fake ass country bullshit catered to the fuckin pussys ya see walkin around your local malls. Country ain't dead at all we just gotta start moppin up the mess and knockin heads.
Damn straight. Seems like a pop princess wearing boots and a hat and someone accidentally bringing a banjo on set while the music video is being filmed makes a song "country" these days. No thank you.

Fuckin eh!
Yep. Fucking accurate 👌
I have this on a play list, all of my pets know the words too 😂
Can't stop won't stop
Sturgill's Tiny Desk is worth leaving on repeat.
Hello from Australia. I just discovered this bloke tonight. What a legend!
Welcome
Welcome to America friend
Welcome to the club we meet on Tuesdays! 🎉
how is this almost 10 years old. why is he so damn good
Where you been?
Omg
‘Still trying to find out what the fuck rhymes with bronco’ such a good line 😂😂
Honcho
read this as i was listening to this the first time right before he said it ahahaha
He finally found it on the cutting grass version haha
@@Hawkinszm1 as in Mike?
Chonko, like a fat cat. hahahha
The dude playing that hot rod Telecaster is a f**** genius
I'm more of a rock and metal guy checking out Sturgill after listen to him on the Joe Rogan podcast, but even coming from a completley diffrent genre its easy to see that guitarist knows his craft. Clean and simple playing, adding some flair when needed but always supporting Sturgill and the song.
@@turdferguson9190 was strictly a rock fan also, but lately found outlaw country interesting. Turd Ferguson....that was a funny Snl skit
@Charlie : I agree 100%. I love these songs, I love Sturgill, but the Tele and the drums are outstanding. Oh yeah, the bass line too. But the electric guitarist is the hell of a great player. Seems so easy, not a demonstration of guitar but each note is perfect. So great!
It's too bad hes not the Normal guitar player for him. He wax more of a stand in for this show
Its called phrasing.
This guy reminds me of old Waylon Jennings. Outlaw country. Glad to see there is still some good country out there. The radio sure as hell don’t play it anymore!
I don't know what impresses me more; how he can set that Telecaster on fire or the fact that he built it himself from scratch!
sturgil dont play it anymore either lol, he didnt care for being pidgeonholed
Too bad it sounds like we might not get to hear him perform live anymore. 😕
his voice is Waylon reincarnated. He don't pick like Waylon, tho. Nobody done that yet. He's damn sure good, bet.
People dont like it when people lay out the screw you and anyone who dont like it cause it ain't for you mentality, that's why theese people were never on the radio and it's a shame, it's better than megan thee stalion and niki Minaj
Every band member has their own subtle way of showing their satisfaction with what is happening. Video editor did an amazing job of highlighting those and other key moments. 10/10
Ty for pointing this out
Hell yea this is my kinda country . Love it. He ain't trying to rap bout cornbread
This is already the best comment of the decade
😂😂😂😂😂😂
yea these guys are by far the most talented band out there today. who else you know . thats writes all there songs, produces them . and preforms bad ass music. thats real truth to. nobody. the best
LMAO man I'm from Eastern KY and this couldn't be further from the truth. Mainstream country isn't country anymore. Sturgill is an absolute legend
LMAO that's great and if you have not heard Billy Strings yet you will not be disappointed.
This dude IS TOO DAMN TALENTED. No wonder him and his boys aren't on the radio.
Agree
This comment is underrated. It’s so true and that says a lot about the current state of music
Well said!
He's literally been nominated for album of the year at the Grammys and has a Colonelship in Kentucky, fuck outta here. Hes not on the radio because his songs talk about weed, pills and suicide, not because people don't recognizehis talent. If you can't find him you're just not looking in the right place.
Neither is Charley Crockett; The greatest country artist of our time.
I find so much joy in this raw live version of these two songs...my favorite by far. I can feel it in my soul. The upbeat enthusiasm makes me sing every word.
Let me guess. Yer a girl right,
Love the guitar player (Adam Davis) grinning & nodding to the bass player! They know it’s sounding badass & even though the bass & drummer aren’t miked up, they are still singing along! 🤠 The transition into the second song is SMOOOOTH!!!
True Masters of there art right here
This is the song that sold me on Sturgill, and Adam Davis is who really sold me on this song. He just looked like he was really feeling the groove.
When he said “I’m tired of y’all playing dress up and trying to sing them ole country songs,” I felt that.
?😊
Ol pppopp my km on. No lol
What's a hockey gotta do round here get little recognition
Now this is modern country music I can get behind. No glitz, no glamour, no cliched topics, no shoutouts to Hank or Waylon, (although their presence is always felt) ... it’s original. It’s what a good song should be. I love this shit.
EDIT: As many have mentioned, I was wrong; there are many shoutouts in Sturgill’s music. My bad
Check out colter wall
Cuz they aint got shit on him...this a one man highwaymen
The second half is a direct shot at the people who do all the things you just mentioned lol
Garth was good but he is responsible for the current state of neutered cuntry music.everyone copied him cheaply until it devolved to it present state
Plenty of shout outs to the greats brother
Sturgill is the Daniel Day Lewis of music. You won’t ever catch him half assing his art
True. He’s the Michael Jordan of being the Daniel Day Lewis of country music.
won't *never
I've never thought about it like that, but you are correct
this is the best country video on the internet.
country fans: real country music died with Waylon
Sturgill: Hold my weed and pills
Hold my psychedelics. Take some enjoy life play. Life is about play. Love Is life life is love fund love and you be happy.
Sturgill: Actually, don’t hold those, I want those.
@@paulcrisafi4415 accurate
Alan Jackson kept it hanging in by a thread for a while though. IMO
👍🏻
You know those men are seriously talented when the live version is better than the studio
Good musicians are always better live. That's what music is all about. The artist and the audience. They both make each other better.
@@dnett57 grateful dead anyone?
Love this song
Its not better or worse. It just different. And you prefer this one
and beer cans are your idea of a studio acoustic?
That bass groove at the transition gets my head bobbing every time!
This transition man... So good
Yup
This is by far the best country music singer since the outlaws in country. This is real music, the guys got an amazing talent. Play and sing what you feel….it’s the way music is meant to be. God bless
That lead guitar player is having the time of his life, and killing it,.All at the same time! His red face and awkward smiles are a testament to the joy in his heart at that moment. And by the way he kills it!! This is my favorite version of this song
I'm still trying to figure out who he is, its still a mystery
@@wesnewman11 that’s Adam Davis from Nashville. Goddam genius on guitar.
Check out Water in a Well from this same store of videos. His performance there is masterful
That’s what happens when the music is true and hits the soul
@@gerdesrm curious, did Adam and Sturgill have a falling out? The glare that Sturgill had towards Adam at the end appeared a little cold. Thoughts? These boys are electrifying. I might be on my 450th repeat. Hot damn
That opening line is something that most songwriters would die to have written.
most "cunt"ry singers today don't even have the balls let alone artistic ability to write a line like that
Just my opinion but seems as cliche as a line from a florida georiga line song.. I love this guys music but I think that was a bone he threw to Nashville to get a few dollars. Everybody has to eat
thatguy
he was on the joe rogan podcast and yeah he hates this song being one of those songs folks always wanna hear, it took him no time to write it and it's silly (although that doesn't decide whether a song is good or not), he says his plan is to write 5 albums total and quit because no matter what he does Nashville has guys like him locked out, so 3 more albums and he's done, this song in my opinion is like that wade bowen song "trucks" where he makes fun of all that crap on the radio, I don't think he was trying to go mainstream with it at all, I've seen some of that with pat green and eli young, going mainstream means becoming a carbon copy poster boy
wheelmanstan There's a self consciousness to this song that is infectious. It is clearly not of the same ilk as the songs you would hear on new country radio mainly because of that self awareness. But sure, it's not his best song, still it's fun and very quotable. This whole album is a lot more fun than MMSICM but it's also not as good. Partly because he isn't going as much for that party country thing (there's certainly less jokes), and partly because he's confident enough to reach a little deeper inside. Either way they're both good albums. I know this song bothered him for some time because he had problems with it, both internally and with how others perceived it.. as you say. But an artist isn't the final arbiter of their work... neither am I but still... that opening line lets you know you're about to have fun right away and to me... that's a good thing.
thatguy On the new album he has a song that starts: "Woke up today and decided to kill my ego, cause it never done me no good no how." - that's a much more a cliche line where I come from but I suppose what is and is not cliche is a matter of the culture you're used to. That opening line, to me, just lets me know I'm about to have some unpretentious fun. The kind of fun I'd have listening to Hank Williams Sr. or Lefty Frizel.
As a farm kid from Kansas, and Us Army Infantry vet...I settled and raised my kids in the birthplace of Texas(Gonzales). Cool history -horrible place to raise kids...
Sturgill is the best artist in the country scene these days. I'm retired now and drive an 18 wheeler across this great nation.
Closest band to old school I've heard from the country scene in a minute.
please dont doxx yourself
That guitarist is a fucking legend this guy knows what's up more than anyone I've seen recently
Dude is seeing the music
That opening line:
“Waylon, is that you?”
Best line...
“And I'm tired of y'all playing dress up and trying to sing them old country songs”
“Are you sure Hank done it this way?”
Tired of takin blame when I ain’t doin nothin wrong
"The only one that can hold me down is inside my head" my fave
real talk from a real country singer.
Hello Fellow Stein LOL
I still can’t get over the transition between song’s absolutely beautiful
10 years later and im watching this every other week man
The guitar player is incredible. Plays everything perfectly, phrases to highlight Strugill. Just flawless.
i agree, but do you get the vibe that sturgill is getting annoyed with him? Watch the end of the video. It seems like sturg is bout to go off on him
@@jordanformo5395 Idk about that. He's doing everything right. A great lead player does exactly what you're seeing done.
indeed! Coming back to this performance year after year :)
If I'm not mistaken the lead guy on this one is the studio guitarist and he does one hell of a job
@@dylanvalley3844 Yeah. When I seen Sturgill, there was a different guitarist. Which isn't uncommon at all, these studio players come and go. The guy in this video is also a music teacher.
"Well they call me king turd up here on shit mountain, if you want it you can have the crown" .... pretty much sums up my life
Yeaaaaa brother,,😅
My favorite singer EVER!!! DAMN!!!! THE NEW KING OF COUNTY 🎉
Sturgill Simpson this is the best performance I have seen you do . You need to get that guitar player back !
Idk what's more impressive, how he sets that Telecaster on fire or the fact that he built that guitar from scratch with his own hands!!
Everytime I hear this guy I can't help but think of Waylon
Pretty sure it's one of his illegitimate sons lol
Sounds jus like Waylon. Love it
Loren Rose Same
On a side note, Waylon was Buddy Holly's Bass Player.
His voice is exact lol
I'm a metal fan. I listen to all the crazy extreme stuff like Napalm Death and Bolt Thrower. But I aint going to deny this man's talent and ability to play some good ol' shit-kicking COUNTRY music. Not that "Trucks, beer, Gurl" pop bro country horseshit....actual working, blue-collared, down 'n dirty everyday man Country that make you feel alive and and not want to slit your own throat. Hails to this man bringing back the sound of 70's Rebel Country.
+Sean Wright AMEN BROTHA!!!couldn't a said it better myself!!!!!!!! LONG live the Outlaws!
+Sean Wright I'm a big death metal fan (Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, etc.) and this is the only country I've heard in the past 10 years that I've actually liked. I'm right there with you, man.
+Sean Wright Metal fan here too. This is one of the few albums (along with Never Mind the Bollocks... and a couple Ben Folds records) that has fully eclipsed my metal listening for days at a time. It's a weird life.
Surprised to see so many guys here who sport the Devil Horns.
I listening Woods of Ypres, Type O Negative, Gorgoroth, Motorhead, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Bloodbath, Katatonia... Etc.
But god damn I love me some outlaw country and southern rock. I have my father to thank for that, grew up listening to it.
I mean, hell I even listen to some rap, specifically horrocore like Lo Key, Twiztid, Brotha Lynch Hung, Kung Fu Vampire, Donnie Menace and the like. There is good music in every genre, it's just the shitty music is what hits the mainstream shelves and gets played on the radio.
Damn right
So much better than the album versions . This is awesome.
That transition ripped my spine straight out of my body! Hope Sturgill gets back to 100% soon!
Sturgill if they aren't i can guarantee you 100% you got a die hard fan right here ❤
The transition between the two songs is just flippin' sick. Love this guy.

That and the songs keep me comin back
It's such a GROOVE.
I'm gettin pretty tired.. of pulling up CZcams to listen to this. Definitely supreme to the album version
I feel ya on that man.
♥️
I just came here to rewatch this after listening to the album version. I was thinking, "Isn't this song supposed to be a faster tempo?" So much better this way.
It's 4am and I'm sitting in my office with my pedal steel and my tele getting drunk. Pickin and grinning. Country ain't dead!!! It just isn't on the radio.
That transition between the two songs is slicker'n apple butter...
The transition between is GOLD
Discovered this is 2020. Puts a smile on this Texas boys face!
Just listened to this the first time a week ago.listen to sterg kick ass
Best by far in years
Charley Crockett should put an even bigger smile on your face.
2019 for me. How's going I'm Cut & Shoot, Texas🙋♂️
The Bronco line's incredibly well crafted, as is the whole song-"call me King Turd up here on Shit Mountain" is a great hook, "watchin' Andy & ol' Boss Hog" snatches your brain back home & then there's "sometimes I feel like cuttin' a vein, just watchin' it bleed"!!! Sturgill Simpson's fucking Legendary!
You know you got yourself a great damn song when your drummer and bassist are singing right along with you, and they ain't even mic'ed up!!!
I've been watching this for many years and will not ever stop
man.... I've been in the dark. I stopped listening to country 15 years ago but Chris Stapleton and now this guy is bringing me back. awesome.
Same here. Jamey Johnson brought me back too. 3 best in my opinion.
Don't miss Cody Jinks!
jamey johnson is commercialized country. its okay to like whoever you like. but stapleton or johnson have nowhere near the country prowess of simpson.
I liked early Eric church but sturgill and Chris are it
If you're selling music for money then you're commercial. Simpson last year signed with a major label. I get what you're saying but you don't hear a lot of Jamey Johnson on the radio, so I don't know how you consider him "commercial". And Stapleton has been making Americana music for a long time. Great stuff with the Steeldrivers. I love the stuff I hear from Simpson and he might be the best of the three, but why limit yourself to just one artist or try to crown one the "king"? You're missing the point of the song...if you want it you can have the crown. What is country prowess anyway lol?
Now this is what I call country music. He will probably never be played on the radio, but that is perfectly fine with me. I refuse to listen to pop country music on the radio. Great job Sturgill, keep the music coming
Hell yeah, I'm sick and tired of the pop crap they try to pull off as country nowadays.
+Bret Bartko I don't listen to country on the radio but I love listening to this guy's music.
He's on the radio in Texas. Not on the Nashville Country stations though. You'll hear him on the Texas Country/Red Dirt stations.
+Bret Bartko Heard him on our local public radio 89.3 thecurrent.org you can stream it
+Matt Gustavson Man, the current plays everything haha. Love that people like this can get played on there, instead of having the same 3 Luke Bryan, 2 Sam Hunt, and 2 Jason Aldean songs play on repeat. I saw Sam Hunt at a country festival and he had "We Can't Stop" by Miley Cyrus playing. At a friken country festival. I just went back to the camp site and drank beer. Sorry, rant over.
Just discovered these guys from watching Yellowstone. Their awesome and they should be more famous. This is real music. Way different than the crap you hear on country radio today this reminds me of the 80’s when I used to go to the Smokey country music bars and drink some beers and take some shots. Man I miss those days. Thanks guys you made my day
Yellowstone sent me here as well... love this band, reminds me of a modern day Johnny Cash.
He has a classic voice. Honest lyrics
I love that nonchalant guitar player playing some badass licks
He knows he sounds dope as fuck and isn't even bothered by it at all.
He’s fucking KILLING IT!
He adds so much to the performance his personality is super funny in a good way
His dynamics are flawless, never too loud but always loud enough. Softens during his runs at the perfect time.
The guitar players expressions are exactly the feeling you have when you walk into a 7/11 high for the first time. And I love it!

I agree!!!! This guy & a few others aren’t “mainstream”. I think today’s country fans would appreciate finding out about this gem of singer/band. He’s fantastic!!
Because it would make to much sense to for everyone to listen to music that makes sense. Today's people couldn't handle so much truth... if that makes sense.
OMG! Shoot me now!!! Cuz if this ain't country music heaven I don't know what the hell is!! And I am ready to go!!!! LOVE IS NOT A STRONG ENOUGH WORD!
Great live performance at Sun King brewery! G*ddamn dude... & I was living in Indy & working downtown at the time, but I also didn't know who Sturgill was until I saw him open for Willie Nelson years later at Deer Creek aka Ruoff. I'm more of a rock 'n roll guy, but I love outlaw country like this! Sturgill is immensely talented. At times he sounds like a throwback, but then you hear his Dood & Juanita album or the Metamodern album where he experiments a lot and you realize this dude is really complex and his musical taste and influences are pretty diverse. Can't wait 'til Sturgill tours again. He's probably my favorite modern country artist. I usually listen to Willie, Johnny Cash, Meryl Haggard - artists like that if I listen to country.
It makes me smile watching the lead guitar, as he is thoroughly enjoying the moment!
Just me? Or anybody else likes when the band members sing along in the background ....just the little things .

Josh Piccolo he busked outside the CMAs once lmao
I can't believe he was nominated. Those dip shits only like pop stars.
Also folded flag kinda burns CMT and the CMA's, he dont give a shit!
The CMA's are a joke. The thing I loved is Sturgill played a free show in the parking lot and after Chris Stapleton received his rewards he snubbed the rest of the show and went outside to play with Sturgill.
Every single band member makes me smile. I love this video. I play it at least once a day. Damn good band. 💙
Them boys are havin the time of their life. Look at the smiles on their faces. Priceless. Keep jammin boys.
