CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Westley (Cary Elwes) beats Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) in a sword fight, but instead of killing him, he respectfully knocks him over the head.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is staged as a book read by grandfather (Peter Falk) to his ill grandson (Fred Savage). Falk's character assures a romance-weary Savage that the book has much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants, and pirates. Indeed, The Princess Bride offers a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale depicting stable boy-turned-pirate Westley's journey to rescue Buttercup (Robin Wright), his true love, away from the evil prince (Chris Sarandon), whom she had agreed to marry five years after learning of what she had believed to be news of Westley's death. With help from Prince Humperdinck's disgruntled former employee Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and a very large man named Fezzik (Andre the Giant), the star-crossed lovers are reunited.
CREDITS:

Your point?
Once Inigo knew Westley wasn’t the six-fingered man, he was relieved, and it turned into a friendly banter. It’s a subtle, yet fantastic way to show that Inigo Montoya was not a bad man. Only a man looking for revenge for the loss of his father.

“I am used to it, that’s how I can handle being in your presence!”
Lol how could someone make a fight scene so perfectly hilarious, absurd, and badass at the same time?
Look and watch how "Roberts" keeps using the same trick over and over to disarm. That quick upward strike towards the sword hilt that doesn't actually start working until he tires from moving around the terrain too much. It's the thing he does backing up the rock as they're talking "forms"
Also show's that Wesley was never trying to kill him from the beginning, when so many strikes aim at the head or body and not the hand. It isn't until Inigo switches hands that he actually goes for a kill shot. When he avoids them effortlessly, "amazing," and he switches hands as well
He behind the scenes book is fantastic, the level of training and meshing with the doubles in this is fantastic...

Yeah, I know but Inigo's earlier trustworthiness happened when he believed that he would have an easy left-handed practice session before finishing Westley off with ease.
By this point in the fight, Inigo was starting to realize that he might be in some trouble in what, as far as he knew, was a duel to the death.

All of the sword fighting was real. No stunt doubles were used for the sword fighting (the acrobatics, yes, they had gymnasts for that). But all the sword fighting was actually Cary and Mandy. They both had to train extensively to master the sword. There were no professional fencers hired to do this scene.
Cary and Mandy had little experience in fencing. Rob Reiner wanted it to the as real as possible, with close ups. Since close-ups would be impossible with doubles, Cary and Mandy were trained by Peter Diamond, and Bob Anderson, respectively. Bob did quite a bit of Darth Vader's light saber scenes, in several Star Wars movies. Peter was a fencer, who also was a stuntman, and stunt coodinator in Star Wars films.
Also had to do so with their non-dominant hand for parts of it.
I wonder how many months/years went into training for this one scene?
@@moonymonster I can't say for certain for this particular choreography but I know for fencing in general I've been doing saber and epee for about ten years and was even a junior instructor for a community college. In most classes you don't even get to do parries until a month in then two months is when you actually start to bout. So just the fundementals of fencing takes two months just to build the muscles and hand eye cordination does that help?
@@randallbanks1589 Bob Anderson was Hollywood's go-to guy for sword fights until his passing in 2012. He also did Highlander, The Mask of Zorro, the LOTR trilogy, and the first Pirates of the Caribbean.

Honestly rewatching this. Weasley disarms Inigo 3 times during this duel. He had him at the first disarm if he was going for the kill. Each time he honestly had him at the disarm. The first where he let him go fetch the blade, the second where he let him catch the sword when it fell, and the final when he knocked him out.
Inigo is a wonderful duelist, Weasley was just so far beyond him.
You know, I never looked at it that way. Wesley spared Inigo twice during the fight and then a third time after the conclusion. Then I think about how Inigo admitted that he'd been getting lax in his swordfighting after failing to find the six-fingered man for years ("More pursue than study") so Wesley wanted to stoke that passion to burn again as something to leave Inigo with afterwards.
No the biggest reason weasley won is because he had more motivation and a bigger thing to fight for

Can we take a moment to appreciate both actors’ amazing ambidexterity? Flawless dexterity and coordination, whether right or left handed, that is truly remarkable swordsmanship.
I like to imagine there was an inverse set built, and the left-handed fighting was filmed there, then they switched to the other when Inigo "switched hands", which means the only time either is actually using their left hand is Westley while being pushed back until he, too, switches. It helps me explain away what would otherwise be near-perfect ambidexterity.

When kids fight with swords, they always aim for the sword of the opponent instead of the opponent
This is just an adult version of it
ToxicSkull0 thats literally what my cousins do
That's what it's like in a real fencing match. If you do real fencing, you don't have time to think. You train long hours to make your reactions instinctive, and consist in blocking the opponent's blade and making a counter-thrust, which will in turn also be blocked.
Essentially what you're doing is allowing your unconscious to fence while you watch quietly inside your head waiting for the opponent to make a mistake, at which time you seize control and strike your blow. You never really win a fencing match, you're just waiting for your opponent to lose. That's exactly what we see here. Both are so good that neither one makes a mistake, so all you see is the automatic back-and-forth not really designed to strike, but to lure the opponent into creating an error through which to strike.
Actual rapier fencing is slow, tedious for some and more rooted in anticipation and strategy, reading opponents’ movements and thinking of ways to counter.
That's what always do, but I do it to disarm them
I believe kids do it to replicate the badassery you see in movie duels

This has got to be the most honorable fight ever, I love it
This may be the best scene in film, period. It just makes me smile so damn wide every time I see it. The humor, music, action, and especially the chemistry between Wesley and Inigo- it all just combines to form this perfect cocktail of a scene.
It helps that this was one of the first movies I ever saw as a child, right smack dab in the middle of my pirate/sword fighting phase.
Cary Elwes was considered by many to be the next Errol Flynn, sadly those types of swashbuckling movies are no longer in demand so after this and Men in Tights his career lagged for a bit.
