CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Westley (Cary Elwes) fights Fezzik (Andre the Giant), and narrowly defeats him, knocking him out with a strangle-hold.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is staged as a book read by grandfather (Peter Falk) to his ill grandson (Fred Savage). Falk's character assures a romance-weary Savage that the book has much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants, and pirates. Indeed, The Princess Bride offers a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale depicting stable boy-turned-pirate Westley's journey to rescue Buttercup (Robin Wright), his true love, away from the evil prince (Chris Sarandon), whom she had agreed to marry five years after learning of what she had believed to be news of Westley's death. With help from Prince Humperdinck's disgruntled former employee Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and a very large man named Fezzik (Andre the Giant), the star-crossed lovers are reunited.
CREDITS:

I love that the first thing he does after suffocating him is check his heartbeat with now hesitation. Really shows more of how Wesley is a gentleman before almost anything else
Also flipping him over to make sure he doesn’t suffocate!
It was a blood choke not suffocation. You can tell because the guy being choked out can still talk. The reason he goes unconscious is due to lack of blood flow to the brain which if temporary is none lethal but will knock someone out
Also, he can tell Fezzik is a nice enough fellow given the circumstances and thus doesn't want to see him die.

"Well, you see, you use different moves... when you're fighting... half a dozen people... than when you only have to be worried about...one!"
I like this line because he so matter-of-factly talks about how he usually fights several people at once!
And it's emphasized by the background music!
And he is talking about why he hasn't fought one-on-one in so long... he was doing charity work. Not something you expect in a criminal, or a villain. But to Fezzik, it was just perfectly natural, not worth calling out specifically -- just one of the things which had affected his fighting style.
This scene is hard to watch because it was really hard for Andre to perform with his back issues at the time. You could tell he was struggling through the pain to get the scene done and they had to use different camera angles and tricks so Andre wouldn't have to support him for long periods.
Darksyne him wincing in pain you can tell. Wow I never noticed that before

That line about Fezzik not exercising is more true than one'd think; apparently the late, great Andre the Giant, throughout ALL of his career, never exercised in his life. This, combined with his acromegaly and apparent insane drinking habit (seriously, look it up, Homer Simpson *wishes* he had the same drinking habits as Andre!) explains his sadly untimely undoing.
He was able to lift the front end of a car when he was younger...he had tremendous lower body strength probably from carrying around his 500-pound frame
joinmarch76 I mean...what would he have been able to exercise on at his size? Really think about that
He had insane natural strength and in his younger years was incredibly mobile. But he did work as a farm hand, sure he never went to the gym and such but he was naturally working out.
Andre's number one problem, and the cause of his lack of exercise was his Gigantism which later caused acromegaly (this is why Andre unlike Paul Wight a similarly aged and sized wrestler has a protruding forehead and giant hands). Gigantism on its own does not cause too many health problems, Paul Wight and other larger people can live long and happy lives while being 6ft 11in (Andre and Big Shows real life heights), but acromegaly can develop series joint problems which plagued most of Andre's life.
Unlike Big Show and others, Andre did not grow up in a time when the simply procedure to prevent continued growth due to Gigantism was available (you can get surgery now), and as he stopped growing taller, he began gaining large amounts of weight, which as you can imagine is agony. By the time Andre was wrestling Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania 3, he was wearing a brace on his back and ever step caused pain. That's why the match was so short and sluggish, Andre could barely move.
We should all be LIVING LIKE LARRY pushups sit ups and running
He drank mostly to numb the pain. Doctors couldn't prescribe how much pain killer to give him. He wasn't expected to live long. Doctors gave him to the age of 40.

the burned by acid part is a reference to the Phantom of the Opera
I thought it was a reference to Harvey Dent aka Two-Face.
Austin Boylan Two face doesn't wear a mask though.
Actually no. The phantom wasn’t burned by acid, he was born disfigured.
“This face which earned a mother’s fear and loathing. A mask, my first, unfeeling scrap of clothing...”
Depends on the version whether the Phantom was burned or not. 1943 version was acid; the original novel and the majority of adaptations he was born disfigured.
I think it was him trying to make another rhyme again.
“Why do you wear a mask?
Were you burned by acid or something like that?”

1:34, lmao, Wesley looks so confident, smiling until Fezzik slams him into the rock.

Cary Elwes has some great stories about interacting with Andre on the set.
Daniel Ryan favorite one was Robin Wight telling about the boat scene. In between takes with her in the water she sat shaking from the cold and he sat down beside her and just draped his arm over her. His sheer size and body heat kept her warm the whole time, she starts crying remembering how sweet he was to her and everyone else.
Every one does. Robin said she absolutely adored Andre and he treated her so kind and would do anything she asked of him without complaint. Mandy said that his favorite scenes (apart from his battle with the 6 fingered man) were with Andre because he just made things fun and comfortable.
Billy Crystal mentioned that Andre was so drunk (He was known to drink 104 beers in a single sitting and often drank 12 or more bottles of wine) one night that he passed out in a hotel lobby. The staff had no choice but to leave him there until he woke up.
Apparently, the entire cast on that movie did.
@@kagemaru259 yeah there was no way anybody could pick him up or move him once he passed out lol. I think someone mentioned that they just took a piano cover off a piano and threw it over him as makeshift blanket.

Brian Zane voice: I give this match a 4 out of 5. They could've stretched it out a little longer, but I like the story they told. It builds Dread Pirate Roberts up as a versatile fighter, and not just a swordsman. Meanwhile, Andre gets to show a lot of personality while looking strong in defeat.
Poor Andre... life must have been hell being so big and having to get around airports etc. I heard his personal hygiene wasn't so great and once farted on Hogan after he pinned him. You can see Hulk trying to get away really bad. But when a toothbrush feels like a toothpick I guess it must have been hard to stay clean.
Based on all I've heard, he had a pretty crass sense of humor. But when you spend your life being in the public eye like he does, you probably learn not to have any real sense of shame since you have no real privacy.
I think that had more to do with him being French than his size.
