In a way Vizzini was right about where the poison is. He kept saying he could not choose the wine in front him and that he could not choose the wine in front of Westley as well.
Great scene, but this video misses out the punchline to the scene: "They were both poisoned. I spent the last few years building up an immunity to iocane powder."
"What you do not smell is icoane powder." "...we find out who is right, and who is dead." XD I love the exquisite phrasing in this entire movie! One of the best movies ever made.
And Vizzini lied about which cup he chose (as he had switched them) A battle of wits does not require (nor should in this case expect) honesty. Vizzini's arrogance played him.
A true master of wits never plays a game with such a high stake unless his victory is curtain. Then again in a way the game was in itself false because the rules strictly said Vizzini had to choose a cup. However if he did deduce that both were poisoned he couldn't win following the rules of the game. Then again he would be the winner by default by using his cunning nature to deduce where that the game was a setup. So in the end the smartest and better looking of the two survived.
Vizzini was only thinking that just one cup was poisoned. I don't think it would have crossed his little mind that someone would want to build up an immunity to a deadly poison.
see i always say that too but then i see the fight between inigo and wesley and think that's my favourite part of the movie too. And then i watch the rest of the move and it seems every single part is my favourite part of the movie. such a damn epic film
He fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well known is this: never go in against a Sicilian, when DEATH is on the line! Ahaha, ahahaha, ahaha....(dead)
this is my fav movie of all time.. when I was a kid everyone in my fam had a nickname from the movie... I was the screeching eels cause of the fact that i whined a lot...lol
@mrfivegold The problem was that Vizzini was full of himself. He said 'Inconceivable' without even understanding the meaning. So, he was just a moron that made others think he knew what was going on. It's why he died :P
That's not it. When Buttercup exclaims that he poisoned his own cup, he dryly remarks he poisoned both, but he "spent the last year building up an immunity for iocane poison" :P
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia. hahaha Love this film! Westley reminds me a little of Johnny Depp lol
I'm afraid I don't agree. You see, if Vizzini had been as smart as he claimed, he would have taken ALL possibilities into account INCLUDING the possibility that he is immune. Westly merely begins by asking where the poison is. The answer, in this case, would be, both goblets. Since Vizzini did not take all possibilities into account, his answer was, "only yours," and he was wrong. Dead wrong! ~lol~ ^_^
I think he was referring to Napoleon's attempt to take over Asia. That didn't end very well even though he had a huge advantage in numbers (at the start)
I think you're confusing it a little. The wine bottle itself was not poisoned. Only the glasses which the wine was poured into were poisoned with the iocane powder.
Actually they refer to these drinking vessels as both glasses and goblets in the clip. Furthermore a wine glass IS a goblet. And finally listen closely from 1:43 to 1:48; you can clearly hear that, while these don't LOOK like glass, they are indeed wine glasses. Notknown clearly does not know what he is talking about and therefore looses the battle of wits! :o)
I know this is an epic scene, but did anyone besides me notice when the wine was poured? Vizzini literally only poured about an ounce into Wesley's goblet and filled his goblet to the brim, yet Wesley's goblet was also full. Did one of the producers pre-fill Wesley's glass?
LMAO this is not what goes through a poker players mind this is what goes through a true RTS players mind, those starcraft players are always in a battle of wits
Wesley must have equalled the amount of wine behind his back too. So he could have more to drink. Which Viceeni (or h/e you spell it) should have noticed it but he didnt. Poor VIceeni...
it was fair, welsey poisoned both cups, he just never siad that one cup was poisoned and if vnni was as samrt as he said, he would of taken all the possilbites
I didn't notice any lie. He simply asks "Where is the poision?" He never says only one glass in poisoned.
"You're trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen."
One of the funniest scenes in the movie. Hands down.
I like how at one point Vizzini correctly guesses that Westley put the poison in his own goblet "counting on his own strength to save him."
Where was I?
Australia.
it would have been great if he said "neither one were poisoned. He was dead the moment he inhaled the powder."
"never get involved in a landwar in asia"
aply that to the game risk and its soooooo true
OMG I LOVE THE BATTLE OF WITTS!!!
"Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line!" I love this movie!!
"What you do not smell is icoane powder." "...we find out who is right, and who is dead." XD I love the exquisite phrasing in this entire movie! One of the best movies ever made.
And I choose ... What in the world can that be!
Can't get more obvious than that.
The look on his face right before he drinks is priceless
And Vizzini lied about which cup he chose (as he had switched them) A battle of wits does not require (nor should in this case expect) honesty. Vizzini's arrogance played him.
For all his supposed intellect, it never even occurred to Vizzini that both cups might be poisoned.
Some Genius.
you're just stalling now
This is one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen in any movie in my entire life. Completely priceless.
Never get involved in a land war is Asia!!! What a great line. His hysterical laughing is awesome too
remember how westley had him smell a little bit of iocane before they started? This would have been a hilarious conclusion!
"AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
AHAHAHA---
*thud*"
I never get tired of watching this scene.
WHAT IN THE WORLD COULD THAT BE?!
Classic.
"Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?"
"Yes."
"Morons!"
Absolutely brilliant... you gotta love Vesini.
A true master of wits never plays a game with such a high stake unless his victory is curtain.
Then again in a way the game was in itself false because the rules strictly said Vizzini had to choose a cup. However if he did deduce that both were poisoned he couldn't win following the rules of the game.

Vizzini was only thinking that just one cup was poisoned. I don't think it would have crossed his little mind that someone would want to build up an immunity to a deadly poison.
Inconceivable!!!!!
" Truly, you have a dizzing intellect"
....why does the man in black look like zorro? I remember when i was younger i saw this movie and thought it was Zorro
Wesley said both were poisioned, and that he spent a few years building up an immunity to iocane powder.
Inconceivable !!! LOL, love this movie !!!
Where was I?
Australia.
Oh yes.
If I was Wesley, I tell him to inhale a poison that is airborn. xD
This is possibly one of the greatest movies ever made. Right up there with Star Wars and The Matrix. XD
Never get involved in a land war in Asia. Heheheh...
I love this scene. Heck, I love the whole movie!
NEVER TRUST A SICILLIAN WHEN DEATH IS ON THE LINE!! HAHAHA!! *falls dead* Classic!
see i always say that too but then i see the fight between inigo and wesley and think that's my favourite part of the movie too.
And then i watch the rest of the move and it seems every single part is my favourite part of the movie.
such a damn epic film
it's rex from toy story!
He goes from this to cutting his foot off in Saw...wow...what versatility!
lol What WOULD have been smart is if the Sicilian would have used the distraction to dump the wine out of his glass and then pretend to drink.
Land war in Asia, hehe
best scene ever!! I quote this movie more than anything else!
I love this movie.
He fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well known is this: never go in against a Sicilian, when DEATH is on the line! Ahaha, ahahaha, ahaha....(dead)
one of rob reiner's best films. i'll be buying the book soon.
this is my fav movie of all time.. when I was a kid everyone in my fam had a nickname from the movie... I was the screeching eels cause of the fact that i whined a lot...lol
Should have got the end, where Wes describes how he survived.
Lol that part is always great putting in both glasses
Wait till I Get going!.....where was I?
"Where was I?"
"Australia"
HA!
@mrfivegold
The problem was that Vizzini was full of himself.
This is a good example of what happens in the mind of a poker player...
hate to be a spoil sport, cause i love this movie too.. but just had a thought to myself.. Australia didnt exist at the 'time' this movie is set in :P
this is a great movie
best part of the movie. hilarious.
4:10 I love his face! XD It is so hilarious!!!
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia. hahaha
Love this film!
Westley reminds me a little of Johnny Depp lol
Australia... wow :) i love this guys logic...
For all his supposed "wisdom", it never even occurred to Vizzini that both the cups were poisoned.
Some genius.
LOLLLLLLLLLLL. I love the bit were he just like, flops to the floor.
I'm afraid I don't agree. You see, if Vizzini had been as smart as he claimed, he would have taken ALL possibilities into account INCLUDING the possibility that he is immune. Westly merely begins by asking where the poison is. The answer, in this case, would be, both goblets. wallace shaw is so awsome
I think he was referring to Napoleon's attempt to take over Asia. That didn't end very well even though he had a huge advantage in numbers (at the start)
I think you're confusing it a little. The wine bottle itself was not poisoned. Only the glasses which the wine was poured into were poisoned with the iocane powder.
lol that has gotta be the most realistic death ive ever seen XD
its like hes been hooked around the neck and pulled sideways :L
Just noticed calls them glasses but I'm pretty sure they're metal goblets :P
love this movie
hahaha yes... but... I don't think victory is ever "curtain." ;)
come on now.... the best is the scene right after when he explains the catch.
ha ha ha ha! ha ha ha ha! ha ha ha ::thud;:
for the princess? ...to the DEATH??? ...then I accept!
They're more like goblets.
this is great xD
inconceivable

He poisoned both because he had spent years developing an immunity to iocaine powder.
I know this is an epic scene, but did anyone besides me notice when the wine was poured? Vizzini literally only poured about an ounce into Wesley's goblet and filled his goblet to the brim, yet Wesley's goblet was also full. Did one of the producers pre-fill Wesley's glass?

Curtain?
only people i have noticed who have almost conquered asia was the mongol,s but then against, they were in asia
But technically he did outsmart Vizzini because Vizzini died ;-)
Wait till I get going
At least he died with a smile. XD X_X
oh crap its stewie's brothe bertrum!lol
Not really. Westley simply didn't want Vizzini to ever know he was fooled.
who would be the sicilian then?
Never get involved in a land war in Asia.
BEST CLIP! XDDD
he could have put it in both glasses and declined to drink the one he had
they shoot the scene several times and cut and splice peices from different takes
You make an interesting point there
"It was really anthrax."
True, but was thinking that only ONE cup was poisoned.
say what?
Exthellent! Thuper imitaion... but... juth a little more lithp might have been in order. : )
this movie is awesomely hilar
I winder if Johnny ever watched it. Ohh, the only difference is one's got a gorgeous british accent, and one's got a charmer American one :)
RUN! lol.
The most classic blunder is
"never get involved in a land war in Russia"
