"My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever." -Psalm 73:26
The 1980 Dodge finally gets to the point of being able to run for the first time in 14 years! But of course, some speed bumps along the way will deter us from our ultimate goal. Will it run after all these years?

lesson everyone should learn here: ALWAYS check your ground wires.. great job Dylan.. truck sounds tough!
Weird how one small thing can hold up progress!
It's good to know everybody seems to miss the little things regardless of their experience
It's the first think I thought. Actually said out loud it's a bad ground.
It's crazy I actually just finished watching part one of this and after I thought, " I can't wait for part two". Just then I got notified of this video lol. I love this truck Dylan and what you done to it! Well done! ❤️
I’m just like you I watched the first one and was about to look for something and bam new video sweet…
Lol same
Nice job, as usual. It looks good, that engine sounds fine, and it looks like you've got yourself a great no BS truck. It ought to serve you well.
But I really hope you don't abandon the Monaco, and I hope you find another suitable engine for it. Here's why:
Pre '68 Mopars are sort of square looking "Dad cars", and that's cool because they don't scream "HOT ROD! HOT ROD! HOT ROD!" to the whole world the way the later hipster models do. You can duplicate all of the running gear that the flashy ones have, and you've got a sleeper that nobody will ever notice until you decide to show them the tail lights. Steel wheels and dog dish caps, keep the rubber inside the wheel wells, and voila! You're invisible! I'm an old southern boy like you, (Atlanta born and raised), and we all know that was how the moonshiners rolled. It was also how the smart guys used to take the "pink slips" from the other guys who ran around in the sparkle and chrome jobs back in ancient times. Ask anybody who was around back then. Most of the time, the plain Janes were the ones nobody could catch. Stealth is cool, and you've got a prime candidate for just such a car, if you decide to build it. Think about it. A fire breathing monster that looks like the car Grandma drives to church! Big fun to be had all the time.
You represent the latest generation in a culture and heritage that goes back a long way. Everything I've watched you build up to this point is looking really good. I can tell you have it in your blood.
Very nicely done, young brother!!
My 68 Fury granny green 4 door would have been such a sleeper, if not for the 30 year old Hooker Competition headers (try finding big block C-body headers under $700 NOW!), 2.5" Flowmasters, and 284/484 purple cam! 😂 With a 3000 stall B&M and 4.10s, it was an absolute MONSTER! And got 5 mpg! 😆
the little look up and smile when you gave it a rev for the first time is what makes doing cars all worth it, massive love from the UK dude!
"don't ever throw anything away" - that's like crack for us hoarders
The ground cable from the battery should always be attached directly to the engine block then the body and the frame should be grounded with two separate straps to the engine. Its goes back to priority and how electricity flows best thru the path of least resistance.
Agreed 👍 Electricity flows from negative to positive a solid ground is essential.
Nobody
ASKED HAHAHAHAHAHA
@@Henryawesome6 its the basics of mechanics why do you think its funny
I need some help with a problem with the secondary air injection valve and the pigtail that’s hooked up to it isn’t getting power to the valve any idea what the problem is on my 04 gmc envoy
I like the fact that you're so detail oriented. Cleaning everything and painting it does take more time in the beginning, but once you clean it, you just have to maintain the cleanliness. And the reason I own old trucks is the room you have to work, and the ground clearance to get me belly under the vehicle.
I really enjoy watching you bringing the old cars/trucks back to life, I wouldn’t mind owning this one when you’re finished, I wish I had your mechanical skills, I’m 59 but it’s never too late to learn.
Worked as a Chrysler mechanic for 35 years always like the sound of a big block sound sounds really good
I love this truck! I had a 1978 Dodge short bed, step side with a 318 in it. It was my first truck and I loved it, but that was long ago. Thanks for sharing this with us, Dylan. God bless you and your family!
Valuable lessen learned Dylan. I knew right off what the problem was. Always check your voltage and grounds when working on your vehicles for the first time. You would be surprised how often a bad ground strap will stump many people until they find the problem and they learn from there. You'll never have the problem again, I guarantee you!!!
You got that right. I hate dead shorts in older classic cars and trucks.
@@unknownsoul13 I don't read posts from B-4 mine so, sorry, I wasn't trying to sound like a know it all but, it is a very easy fix and overlooked by many
Sounds like a beast!! That cam is perfect! Nice job, Dylan!
There should be another ground cable as well. One should go from the engine to the body and to the battery. The one on the valve cover isn't the only ground from engine to chassis as there's supposed to be two. Sometimes there was a single cable with two earth points - one for the chassis that sometimes went under the starter relay bolt if it was next to the battery and one that went under an engine mount bolt (on one of the block ears IIRC) OR the front intake manifold bolt and of course the other going to the neg on the battery. Even so there was still that braided strap on the valve cover.
Love this build. I had an 82 with a 440, 727, and 3:91 sure grip that was blast to drive.
Excellent video Dylan :) also ground cable to block then pig tail to fender to dash together and you have ground perfectly too ! Also sounds amazing that motor and go under own power too also looking foward to brake booster fix up too! Also you should be get new gauges for Fuel , Volt , Oil pressure, Temperature, in after market company sell them ! Plus I would replace fuel tank plus sending unit to plus filler neck too and that truck last long time too!
I own a 1990 dodge short wide and I love it. Everyone has the Chevrolet and Ford short bed but you don't see many dodge short box. U are living my dream by installing the big block 💪🏼 I'm still running stock 318. Love the video 👍
Oven cleaner makes a great degreaser. Cold or hot, the stuff works a treat and is cheap. I buy it by the case from Wal-Mart. Likely one of the only things besides Shell Rotella T-4 that the sell that I can use and isn't Chino-crud. Thanks for sharing this sweeet old D-100/150. I miss my W200 Power Wagon Club Cab with 4400 pound military axles and 440/727.. 456's spinning 44's.
Awesome truck and great build, still hating on the automatic!!
I feel u brother, I’ve spent countless hours chasing wires and troubleshooting electrical shit and it can be a nightmare. I had a 79 and those factory wire harnesses look super janky and homemade but that’s just how they were. Thank god for the steal me junction on the fender so a guy can stand right there and jump the starter. Great vid 👍
Dam nice build dylan she sounds awesome thats gonna have some serious power
Thanks for the video as always. I’m laid up from an injury and this helps take my mind off the pain.
Love seeing you bring this back to life. Great editing and the music choices on point. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Peace
Bad/forgotten grounds bite a lot of techs. I ALWAYS upgraded the grounds on older vehicles just to get the headlights to work properly 😂
Nice side effect is that the starter would spin better and start the car easier
about 15:02 into the clip, it looks like it is trying to close the earth circuit via the engine mount. There is a possibility that your ground cable between engine and chassis does not have good contact. If the smaller ground at the radiator has to take all the voltage, there may be a risk of problems later on.
I saw that as well. was going to mention it but u beat me to it.
400 sounds beastly with them headers Love that sound @20:00 @Dylan McCool
Good catch on the ground cable. Glad to see the old girl running
Really love that truck!!! , and I love your channel! Awesome job Dylan!
Great job Dylan! Keep up the good work! Thank you bring back trucks and car back to life. Put them on the road again!
I had discovered your chanel short time ago, and the projects are amazing! Thank's for share knowledge, Mr.!
Looking and sounding awesome dude. Can't wait to see more 🤙🏻
Fantastic job great engine rebuild keep it up man
electricity has to flow in a circle, from battery positive, to battery negative. to check the negative side, simply put a jumper cable onto the battery negative, then onto the engine block. this quick test would have saved you a day in your life...
PS - the battery negative main lead should go directly onto the engine block, ideally next to the starter motor. you should have another lead onto the body, and finally one onto the frame. this has the added bonus of helping with radio reception
Awesome the 383 sounds great. A little tweeting and you got a real hot rod truck.
Such an amazing build mr McCool sounds beautiful
If I might make a comment you’re ignition switch works great. It just happens to be under the hood instead of on the dash. Sounds great! 👍😎
Awesome video. Just waiting to see the next installment and how it will look when you start reconditioning the interior and exterior of this great old truck!
Great job you are doing man.thanks for sharing your experience and effort.and we are grateful for that.thanks again.
keep up the great work man!
Awesome video man! Can't wait to see it cruise down the road!
Agreed on the old distributors are pain, as they wear out, most overly looked item. When I swapped out a cam for my Buick it had a hiccup in the idle/ miss fire. A brand new MSD distributor and ignition box, fixed all of that, she purred like a kitten, and roared when I got into it! Thanks
That sounded so nasty! I can’t wait to see it finished! That’s my favorite body style Dodge!
Ok....this truck is AWESOME!!!! Love it Dylan!!
Great work, as always awesome content!!
Awesome Dylan McCool enjoyed the truck dude!
72-78 brake booster is smaller for the trucks that had big blocks.
I can’t wait to see this truck all cleaned up what a nice build…
One of my favorite builds going on . Great work.
Awesome video Dylan!!🤘
haha my late grand father always said "start with the power supply" when doing any kind of electrical repair. It's good advise I follow to this day 50 years later.
Awesome job beautiful old truck hard to find an old Dodge in that good of shape it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack thank you for your hard work and great videos you and thunderhead 289 junkyard digs at the best content thank you for all your hard work and dedication
Congratulations Dylan, it looks and sounds awesome 👍☮️
I noticed a spark at that ground after the engine spun the first time, you couldn't hear me yelling to check the ground before you remove the starter, lol
same lol that hurt to watch
That truck sounds awesome, you did a great job getting it this far !
Great work, thanks for sharing, looking forward to seeing more 👍
I love the old dodge pick up trucks. I've had a 67 D100 stepside slant 6, 3 on the tree I drove that for years and it never failed me. I also bought a 71 power wagon years later but it rusted so badly the roof almost blew off it. I really enjoy your channel👍👍👍
Great video! The 383 is looking and sounding good. Got to love chasing those grounding issues down in these old cars!
It’s a 400cid
Way2go Dylan what a cool project keep up the great content
SO HAPPY TO SEE THIS TRUCK SAVED & RUNNING AGAIN! GREAT JOB DYLAN!
Absolutely love this build! Love the turquoise on the motor!
Glad to see this beauty purr to life! What's to come of the Monaco? Is it getting its original 383 rebuilt?
Thanks for the snoot-boop to brighten my day
That is one cool little truck Mr McCool. Loved the vids!
Thank you for sharing and the appreciation
Always check your grounds first. And stay away from the plastic tank rads...no good. Great video. That blue dash is just what I need for mine.
Awesome 👍 job guys I appreciate all your Tips and video's keep up the great build
Great follow up to the first video about this truck, Dylan -- thanks! I sure like the distributor you put on it.... I would think about something like that for my '89 but it run fine right now.... hate to mess that up.
Also -- I was a little surprised when you were first planning to put that nice engine in the Monaco..... the Monaco is pretty far gone, the new engine is a bit like putting lipstick on a pig. But, putting it in this truck really works. I enjoyed the video!
steve
Been waiting for this video to drop!
TRUCK SOUNDS GREAT DYALN!!! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT VIDEO!!
I just got my project running the other day - but it's the reverse to this project. I took a truck that used to have a 440 in it, and installed a fuel-injected 3.9 V6.
Why??? Well, why the hell not?
In regards to the electrical side of things.... you've now learned probably the best lesson to learn. You can NEVER have "TOO MANY" grounds. 99% of something electrical not working is down to either 1) poor connection or 2) bad ground or 3) 1 & 2 combined. Now, to do things right; that BIG ground cable should be bolted to the engine. The starter is the only gadget that requires wiring like that. Then, you can either run like a braided ground strap from the firewall to the intake manifold OR run a secondary ground from body to negative terminal. I suggest both.
Great sounding engine and super cool how good and fast it just revvvvs 😀
friggin' awesome truck! love that 400... sounds great!
Once you swapped out to the electronic ignition, it sounded, and ran absolutely beautiful 😍😍😍
I wish I had the mechanical know how to take an old truck like this and return it to its former glory. I would really enjoy that.
Dylan, I sure hope to see this truck again it's one of my favorite out of all your videos!!! 😎
So cool. Big block Mopar truck!! Your cam break in seemed so much quieter than the one I did recently with open headers. My ears are still ringing from that one.
I never watch sponsor adds but long as you put them at the end i will watch them every time wish more channels did that.. Awesome video man
These are my favorite dodge trucks I’d have to say, they definitely got the look right. I’d like to have one of each from the big three some day
keeps getting better and better
Nice. Can’t wait to see it finished
Lil' Red Wagons evil twin,Lil' Black Dragon. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hell yeah that sounds badass, love the cam
I love that truck just something about the way it looks!
I miss those days of slingin wrenches....havent had a project in a long while. What a nice combo!
Awesome video keep em coming
This truck is so cool!! Noticed the snaps for the bed cover! LOL! Had a 79 that had the same thing. I miss that truck and watching your videos makes me want to go buy another!
Factory black truck sounds frigging great can't wait to see it fishtailing down the road 💯👍
Its got fantastic throttle response dylan. Didnt expect that
Smooth ride i had a 77 factory black dodge pickup back n the day i had a big block in it she was Boss super fun
Best use of emissions equipment I have ever seen. Hammer.
Hey Dylan. Good video. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍
Awesome content brotha 😎
Cam break ins are scary man. Good job
Sounds great. Be sure the main power wire that you fixed has a fusable link in it. I however DONT agree with the DUI setup. I have been running Mopars for 20 years and have yet to have an issue with the factory ignition. No blown ballasts or anything. My 78 Fury is still running its original ignition stuff and I converted my 86 D-150 over last year to factory electronic. So no GM-based stuff on my cars.
Eres un maestro de los Dodge muy buen trabajo
Looks like a mag hanging out of the top of a Keith Black hemi. Nice cam! It should sound really good with some exhaust. Great video!
Build is coming along great sounds good
I like the truck build I've been watching your videos for a while and wondering when you were going to be building a truck but I'm curious as to why the distributor is sticking so far off the motor when the other ones were all of setting on the motor not complaining just curious
That sounds nice Dylan (23:00 up).
Great job Dylan McCool 😎👍👍
sounds great. that truck is going to be an awsome road machine.
