  • In today’s Saturday Morning Install, Jason takes you through the installation of our OEM-Style Bed Lighting Kit for 2015+ F150’s.
    The vast majority of trucks are pre-wired for this kit. To determine if your truck is pre-wired, check the C431 inline connector shown at time stamp 2:39. On at least one the plugs, the following wires should be present:
    2015-2017 = Pin #6 (Black with Yellow Stripe) and Pin #7 (Purple) - Please note, there is a Brown wire with Purple stripe that looks similar.
    2018-2020 = Pin #6 (Black with Yellow Stripe) and Pin #7 (White with Green Stripe) - Please note, there are TWO White with Green wires. You must have BOTH.
    If they are not, you will also need Starkey 4572 Power Extension Wiring found at the link below:

    Nice product but you can buy the factory parts for less and get the button feature and the wiring is just as easy as it uses capped off connectors designed for the bed lights. Programming the changes yourself with Forscan is pretty simple. But your kit is very good for anyone intimidated by Forscan.

    Very Bright LEDS that match the other LED swap outs on my 2021 Ford F150 XLT Sport. Looks identical to the stock unit sold under the 302A package. Installation took under 5 minutes, plug N play. Pleasantly surprised to find out that when pressing the cargo light button in the cab, these stay on as well, a BIG plus.

    pushing wire through those pressure relief vents is a sure way to cause them to leak. they are just about the #1 place for cab leaks already.

    • @StarkeyProducts
      @StarkeyProducts  Před 3 měsíci

      I can't speak to the overall seal of the factory components, but we did test this extensively to make sure it wouldnt become a leak point with our cable running through. The vents open every time the cab doors are closed, so the risk of leak doesnt end up being any higher if a small cable runs through one of the flaps. That being said, there is a small grommet in the back of the cab below the vent that can be used if customers want to use another path. Its a bit tougher to get to and a little lower down than the vent.

      @StarkeyProducts  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Jorge! Thanks for the feedback, glad you got the system working! So the Gray with Purple wire does work and will function the same way as the solid Purple, but we do not recommend using that with the bed lighting kit. Again it will work and is safe to use, but we prefer customers with a 2015-2017 use the Purple wire for power. I also want to clarify, this information is only applicable for trucks that did not come pre-wired and are using our 4572 power extension. Thanks again!

    Question for StarKey: Are 2019 F250's with Tow Package and Tailgate Camera's prewired the same as F150's? I want to avoid 3rd tail light wiring.

    • @StarkeyProducts
      @StarkeyProducts  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Mauro - it depends on the truck/ configuration. The other issue is that Ford has had some issues with the that particular junction on the 2017-2019 Super Duty and for that reason, we didnt recommend connecting. That said if you wanted to give it a try, we do have a plug-n-play option and it would technically work on your 2019 if you are pre-wired and don't have the aformentioned issues. Please reach out to tech support if you need more information. Thank you!

    Have you guys considered adding a switch to one of the lights that can be switched on and off from the bed? 25 seconds is OK, and cracking a door, eh, not a fan of that.

    • @StarkeyProducts
      @StarkeyProducts  Před 3 lety +2

      Carlos - that's a great question. The issue is two-fold. First, the connector we are plugging into does not have a constant 12v power feed that we can safely utilize. If it did, the switch idea would work. However with that setup, you wouldn't be able to control with your key fob and they wouldn't come on automatically when you opened a door, without some additional wiring/ hardware (IE higher expense). We felt like the current configuration would give the most people the best function possible at a really reasonable price. That said, we completely understand some people would rather control it with a switch like it comes from the factory. Thanks for your insight!

      Sorry to hear Steven - while some trucks with a factory tow package are pre-wired, it is not a guarantee and we recommend everyone check before ordering. • @StarkeyProducts
      @StarkeyProducts  Před 6 měsíci +1

      We opted to design this kit without the factory on/off button. This was due to significantly higher costs and a requirement for the customer to visit the dealership for re-programming. These lights can be operated with the cargo light button located on the headlight switch. They also come on anytime the truck is unlocked or a door is opened. Thank you!

      Hi - the short answer is yes. The long answer is, modification may be required - most trucks that have factory bed lights have a black connector in place of the normal Khaki-colored connector. Please take a look at page 1 of the instruction manual - it includes information on how to modify the adapter to work properly. I am linking to it below in case you don't have it. Thank you!

    • @StarkeyProducts
      @StarkeyProducts  Před rokem

      Thank you! Its hard to say - there is a 50/50 chance you are pre-wired. The only sure-fire way to know you are pre-wired is if you have the Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature which includes a small LED light next to your tailgate handle. If you have that, you are definitely pre-wired. If not, you'll need to follow the steps below to determine if you are pre-wired:
      To determine if your truck is pre-wired, check the C431 inline connector shown at time stamp 2:39. On at least one the plugs, the following wires should be present:
      2015-2017 = Pin #6 (Black with Yellow Stripe) and Pin #7 (Purple) - Please note, there is a Brown wire with Purple stripe that looks similar.
      2018-2020 = Pin #6 (Black with Yellow Stripe) and Pin #7 (White with Green Stripe) - Please note, there are TWO White with Green wires. You must have BOTH.

      If your truck has the Trailer Assist Lamp, it is pre-wired. If it has a factory-installed Tow Package (like the 2021 STX in this video), it is likely pre-wired. Check the C431 inline connector shown at time stamp 2:39. On at least one the plugs, the following wires should be present:
      2015-2017 = Pin #6 (Black with Yellow Stripe) and Pin #7 (Purple)

    Ok so I got the external power harness wired up and the lights work (yay) but that green and white wire is really thin and fragile. Thought I was gonna sever it. How come since we’re in the fuse box we don’t tap a fuse with a fuse tap? This is how gear heads usually rig up things like line locs and stuff.

    • @StarkeyProducts
      @StarkeyProducts  Před 2 lety +1

      That's an understandable concern. The wire-tap we supply is made for that specific gauge of wire (22ga), so if installed properly you will not have any problems. Although plug-n-play is always preferred, sometimes we have to tap a wire and these 3M taps are extremely reliable in dry areas, particularly for low amperage applications like this. As far as the fuse-tap question goes - they are great when you can use them, but are not usable in this case. Nowadays, the Smart Junction box manages multiple loads on the same fuse. The problem with using the fuse tap, in this case, is you bypass some of the built-in load management technology and if you blow the fuse you can end up rendering multiple functions inoperable until the fuse is replaced. At the same time, the fuses increasingly have power at all times which can be problematic if you are connecting a device that you only wanted to be powered when the truck is on.

    • @StarkeyProducts
      @StarkeyProducts  Před 2 lety

      Johnny - I apologize for the trouble you are having. 3M T-taps are definitely not suitable in outdoor locations like taillight wiring (prone to failure in the elements), but they do serve a purpose inside the vehicle and are extremely reliable in dry locations when installed properly. You can always make a permanent connection if that is something you prefer though.
      Be sure you are looking at wires running into the proper connector first - the video and instruction manual illustrate this visually. There is only one circuit with a solid purple wire on the C2280C connector we are working with - there is also a purple wire with a red tracer on it, but that is NOT the one we want.
      Please reach out if you are still having an issue. Thank you.

      Hi Wayne - No we do not. Our system is controllable with the factory KeyFob, and in some cases the cargo light button on the headlight switch. Ford offers a system with a button like the factory for 2015-2020 models - the only downside is that it is more difficult to install, more expensive (about $250) and requires a trip to the dealer for BCM reprogramming.

      All trucks have the connector, but some are not prewired. You'll need to check the connector and see what wire colors you have. Check the video description above for the wire colors (it varies by model year).

    I know you guys don't have anything for the later 21's as well as the 22's yet so I have a question. Why is the wiring so complicated on this project? Why can't 2 lights be installed in the bed and then powered directly by the light circuit for the light on the back of the cab? Wouldn't that be the simplest way? What am I missing?

    • @StarkeyProducts
      @StarkeyProducts  Před 2 lety +1

      That's a great question - the revised version is not overly complicated, but there were some hold-ups in production due to how busy our shop is. We produce all the harnesses in-house. The new product should be available in the next week or so. Our apologies for the delay!

I went ahead and bought that one thinking I could modify your y adaptor because I knew power was going through the plug for the trailer hitch assist light in the tailgate. Well much to my surprise your y connector was wired perfectly for my truck. The bed lights now come on with the bed cab light switch next to the headlight switch as well as with the door open and with the key fob unlock button. This without your F series power connection extension wire. Thought you should know. Oh, and my truck was built in 12/21 and is XLT with 302 High package.

    • @StarkeyProducts

      Josh - the lights will not be triggered ON by opening the tailgate itself. However anytime you press the unlock button on the FOB OR open a door, they will come on. If you have a truck with power locks (and the power locking tailgate), I’ve found it’s pretty natural to unlock and approach the tailgate and the lights are ON and ready.

      @@JoseRodriguez-tp2qs That is the only wire you want to use for this particular application. It is definitely there, assuming you are looking at the wiring from the correct connector. Every truck has them regardless of options. That said you may need to gently unwind some of the tape around the wire bundle to expose more of the wires - another thing that can happen is wire colors can bleed onto each other a bit making a white wire with green stripe look more like a gray wire with a green stripe, etc.
