Flareon’s Weird Use in Gen 3 OU.

- Pokemon Competitive Singles in Gen 3 is a format where Fire types struggle to compete with Moltres and Charizard. Flareon, while unviable in almost every Generation, was used in a high level game by the player Marcop, and it turned out to be the perfect Pokemon to fill the teams gaps. Here's why Flareon has a unique niche in Gen 3 that no other Fire type does.
Vaporeon and Jolteon see more usage than Flareon does. Yeah.
Iron Mugulis and Iron Fellow know all about it.
Only Jim knows about the viability of Flareon. All other sources of information are liars and are inaccurate.

Some will never figure out how to get Flareon in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Flareon Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Flareon Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.

Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on CZcams. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

I honestly think gamefreak should just switch flereon's special attack and speed. Make its speed base 95. And also hive it more physical attacking options like stomping tantrum.
@@tomkarate1fr
Flareon's attack stat surprises me every time I see it. Mf's got the same attack stat as Machamp, Ho-Oh, Urshifu, and a few more notable mon. So much force contained in such a fluffy boi/girl.
Same as fcking garchomp too lol
And he has nothing to do with it! Prime example of stats having potential, but the moves being more than lacking
@@GardeniaCreationsit’s like that form of Super Saiyan Trunks used against Perfect Cell: lots of raw power, but too slow to actually hit anygg tbh but with it
@@borby4584 That, and Flareon doesn't have any coverage. You get Bite, Takedown/Body Slam, Double Kick, Trailblaze, and Dig as your best non-fire moves. Actually, this is pretty much it for physical coverage, unless you're looking at weaker normal moves, or niche picks like Facade or Last Resort.
@@GardeniaCreationsFacade with guts toxic orb is a thing right?
The one problem flareon had until gen 6, is that the strongest physical fire type atack jt could learn fire fang, in gen 6 it could learn flare blitz but power creep catched it already and also it has almost no coverage moves
Not just that... Its low HP stat means it can't spam Flare Blitz as much as it would like anyway. It gets overwhelmed by the recoil damage very quickly.
Flareon also, ironically, doesn't have the stat line to use Flare Blitz in the first place.
The funnier thing is that it got nerfed in gen 9. It lost superpower. Superpower was one of its main coverage
Funnily enough, Flareon can learn Temper Flare in The Indigo Disc… but that’s still not helping the little guy…
Babe wake up, the new Jimothy video explaining a random shit mon's hyper specific but very effective niche in gen 3 OU just dropped
I've always thought that the 130 stat should have been in Defense on Flareon. Fire is special in Gen1, and Flareon barely has anything that even uses attack. Whereas if it had 130Def/110SpD it could have been a serious defensive asset.
That HP is too low for it to be a defensive mon anyway, but yeah, with that speed, that attack stat is almost useless.
Or maybe not. Idk. It could even be a good wall, but then it would have barely any attack. It would need to have more moves maybe.
Nah it should have 95 speed, 130 atk or spatk
The eevees have almost always been held back by movepool
Just swapping that special def with its speed woukd have made a world of a difference. 110 speed with 130 attack would have allowed it to be a better offensive threat and actually hit things before getting hit.

Gotta say, something I love about gen 3 OU is how so many otherwise-bad pokemon find a way to work in this format. You don't get that with any other format.
It warms my heart to know that my favourite Pokémon was actually competitively useful at least once in its life.
Aye another flareon fan 😃
Used my Flareon in Leafgreen playthrough, and it's high Sp.Def and acces to Shadow Ball and Quick Attack, just made it the Bane offer Psychic Types.
Prior to Gen4, at least it had a powerful Shadow Ball with it's 130 Base Attack Stat...
Honestly, each Eeveelution only has two abilities, Meaning that they all can be buffed with a great ability in that second, not hidden slot. I nominate Fluffy as Flareons new second ability. that would be a huge defensive boon for it
Honestly a very interesting buff that would serve to indirectly make Flash Fire viable again as well. Since Fluffy would make Flareon neutral to Fire moves, people would second-guess themselves and possibly avoid Fire moves anyway just in case it could be Flash Fire as a mix-up. Which would give Fluffy almost no drawbacks until the opponent has figured out what ability Flareon has.
Obviously wouldn't make Flareon OU-material or anything, but it would give it something unique over other physical-attacking or tanky Fire types. And I'm all in favor of unique niches.
Fluffy would be a really cool ability. I've always felt that Adaptability should be the Eeveelutions' second ability since all they have is STAB moves anyways lol
This channel has fostered in me a new obsession with gen 3, guess it makes sense as someone who plays both melee and Pokémon that I'd be I'd be into the melee of Pokémon
It's remarkable how satisfying Gen 3 metagame is. The pre-split types being bound to attack or sp. atk just sort of "work" and a thriving ecosystem has emerged because of it. And now that it's been a few years, people are looking back and seeing new uses for previously useless PKMN.
@@abominationdesolation8322 yup and I'm still here labbing fox approaches
I wish Flareon had been more of a physical foil to Jolteon. Keeping the 130 physical attack but having 110 speed would make it significantly more useful
It would be the same spread as espeon, but physical, cause 110 speed.
@@garbagelmao2730 true, I had a brain fart
Give the credit for Flareon for one thing at least. Out of all the Eeveelutions he has the best design for good warming plushie.
Hey guys, did you know that in terms of human companionship, Flareon is objectively the most huggable Pokemon? While their maximum temperature is likely too much for most, they are capable of controlling it, so they can set themselves to the perfect temperature for you. Along with that, they have a lot of fluff, making them undeniably incredibly soft to touch. But that's not all, they have a very respectable special defense stat of 110, which means that they are likely very calm and resistant to emotional damage. Because of this, if you have a bad day, you can vent to it while hugging it, and it won't mind. It can make itself even more endearing with moves like Charm and Baby Doll Eyes, ensuring that you never have a prolonged bout of depression ever again.
Wow that's so wholesome and well written. Could you write something similar for the other eeveelutions, like Vaporeon perhaps.

If I remember correctly, Flareon actually had a super tiny niche in early Gen8. If my memory is correct on the reason, thanks to its high SpDef, and Fire Typing, and Heavy Duty Boots, it was a Pokemon that could be used to help handle opposing Clefable during the pre Pokemon Home meta.
Do ya remember the moveset for flareon?
@@theflaminggroundon632 I unfortunately do not remember, however, in trying to find the move set, I did find the forum page, and it mentioned that Flareon was used to answer Life Orb Clefable while being a Wish passer that wasn’t as passive. If it wasn’t passive as a Wish passer, Flare Blitz and Will-O-Wisp probably was used, and I assume Protect was using to pair with Wish to heal itself.
I don't understand how you pump these videos out so quickly. You're a machine.
I have a soft spot for Guts Flareon, myself. Sure, it's still not great in proper competitive due to mediocre Speed, but I still like using him in-game.
Will Poltchageist go rogue and join Iron Mugulus? The all new “Iron Chugulus” may become a bigger threat than we thought 😳😳😳
I just found your videos and they remind me of when i used to play PokeMMO competitively back in early 2010s which ran all on Gen 3 rules. There was an OU tourny and since the game had its own meta game due to certain mons just not being available I was able to bring a flareon and shock the competition for a win in the final round. No one was dumb enough to bring a flareon but a brave Flareon was just enough to get me out a win
Love how the game that inspired this video has flareon not even able to use a move and just get critted and flinched 💀
I’d love for you to talk about umbreon. I’ve been using a wish baton pass set that is used like wishport clefable in early gen 8 OU and in a metagame not revolving around switching moves, it’s actually pretty good. Being able to get free switches into dugtrio makes you remember why it’s banned in every other gen and easy wish heals is great in a metagame with so many defensive Pokémon without 50% recovery moves
Flareon used to be my favourite eeveelution until I found Vaporeon... So anyway I have been cursed

That's why in the Jimothy Theorem-
This channel is awesome, I love hearing about objectively crappy mons having a cool niche. Gives me team ideas too lol
Fun fact. In gen 1 flareon has the second highest special stat on a fire type right behind moltres and is tied for 14th overall. It also is tied for the second highest attack in the game just 4 points behind dragonite.
People say flareon is the worst of the first 3 eeveelutions, but at least for gen 1 I think it gets an unfair reputation caused by gen 2+.
Its special stat in gen 1 was 110. That's high by gen 1 standards, and would've still been considered high for a while... but it's only 95 in gen 2 onwards.
I like the evolution of the qualities of the end screen, first being "funny", then "excellent". Now it gets to enjoy the best of both worlds
I started watching this video 8 seconds after came out
This is insane.
Thats absolutely crazy
You post right when I wake up, it’s such a nice start to my day seeing your videos. Excited for more!
Flareon would've been better if they gave it quick feet and lowered its attack by like 20 points. Instead they gave the ability to Jolteon
I’ve always thought a physical attack that burns would be interesting. For most mons, it would be emergency coverage/an emergency nuke, but it could be very dangerous if given to a guts pokemon that needs help, like Flareon.
Feels weird that Flareon has Guts, just feels so off without being burned, but that could just be me and not resorting to the others like poison or confusion etc
My favorite eveelution from the original three is vaporeon, due to its high compatibility with my love of water and swimming hobbies, as well as its huggability and ease of transport as it is able to meld with most bodies of water, including more portable forms like bottles or jugs
I like facade flareon on the gba it always tear through team 🔥🐶
I beg you to make more Gen 3 OU videos, i got into it because of your videos and its been lots of fun
Thank you, Jim-- very cool!

ADV OU players when a mon has a fringe use case that appears once every 10k matches:
Vampire on is defs my fav of the original 3 but Flareon was the one that ended up being on my gen 6 singles team to cover fire arms aimed at either my Excadrill or my Whimsicott. It ran Wish, Heal Bell, Flare Blitz, n Toxic (so my other Wish Passer, Alomamola, could have room for both Scald n Aqua Jet)
Flareon still gets the dub for cutest fully evolved fire type
Yuup keep the gen 3 vids coming!!
Can you talk about siczors role in gen 2-3 I'm very curious how it was back then
Good idea
Would be really funny if this thing had fluffy, not fur coat, fluffy
Theory crafted a Sassy Nature
Flareon with Max HP and Special Defense.
- Curse
- Wish
- Flamethrower
- Body Slam
The theory is for Flareon to bulk itself up, stay alive with Wish and spread burns/paralysis.
Best niche I can think of.
I can't see this ever working. Even at +2 it still is 2HKO by Tyranitar and Aerodactyl who can both switch into it easily and are very popular. And it really won't ever find the time to use curse. I think the set listed in the video has more merit, as it can come in on a pokemon that it threatens, and then try to hit a switch in with toxic or flamethrower if it's a steel type, or just get a wish off so the next switch can come in more easily.
@@jaketerpening3284Didn't think so. That set came the very bottom of the barrell.
Just for Flareon to do 'something' on a team besides its best.
its sad that in gen 3 flash fire doesnt activate when beeing willowispd as in later gens
Hey, the end screen is funny again :D
Loving the Gen 3 content, by the way
If you switch Flareon into a Charizard's fire attack, activating Flash Fire, then I'd probably just chuck a FF boosted Fire Blast at whatever is sent out next. In the case of that Dugtrio it would have OHKO'd. :L It's not like the opponent is going to have a second fire type, with flash fire, to eat your move. Maybe you end up burning a Swampert, idk. They're unlikely to keep Charizard in the game and they probably aren't expecting you to choose Fire Blast while their Charizard is out; especially considering Flareon's forte is physical damage. Sadly Dugtrio doesn't mind eating a toxic since it relies on hit and run tactics; it doesn't usually try to slug it out for multiple hits. Toxic is still a great choice though since almost no one is going to switch a steel type into Flareon; maybe a poison type if it's a low tier game (certainly not OU).
thanks jim this was a good one
Flower Gift would be a perfect ability for Flareon when I think about it
Or solar powered too, special attack boosts on flareon would do nice
The end screen is finally funny again.
jimothy making me wanna use heat in adv
Thats why there is the flareon theorem, where it has a pretty decent movepool, but its stats, typing and even ability are just too much for even its good utility movepool to even work.
Edit: Forgot it doesn't have flare blitz, so that's why it's called the Flareon theorem, but still it's probably why it still couldn't make it
What are your thoughts on the Pokémon Lickitung?
I’m trying to build a rain team around iron mugulous and iron chugulous. Any tips?
Flareon is such a cool eeveelution, highest stat with its power and a decent sp attack, kind of reminds me of a flightless Ho-Oh, but slower. Maybe could be use for trick room, but not quite sure on its moveset though. I do hope it gains gets more into the spotlight though, flareon for the win!!
Still the best Eeveelution 😎💖 I love himb. Also would love to see a video on team building for Gen 3 OU, im curious about the format but i suck at team building
Reminds me when that one time ledian did agility pass in gsc nu
poor Flareon
please do a video on electrode. he is actually a great out for skarmory dugtrio and aerodactyl. magnet lets it one shot aerodactyl explosion kills dugtrio
I've always been a big fan of Flareon's aesthetic and have always wished it was better. At least it can finally use Flare Blitz now.
Jolteon has been my #1 Eeveelution forever, though, and one of my favorite Pokemon in general.
Good Video
Can you try medicham?
Whenever I hear " has a viable niche" I assume it's going to be gen 3.
At this point I think gen 3 is the most balanced gen.
you're basically correct, as it has honestly the most variety of viable tactics and playstyles, is the only gen where all the currently available starters and legendary trio mons of the time have some effective niches there, and i'm pretty sure has the largest percentage of mons in OU/BL.(which is ignoring ofcourse all those viable UU heroes as well). The short-lived post-garchomp ban pre-platinum a& hgs/ss gen 4 meta was also a close runner up for it(despite stealth rock absolutely ruining entire typings) but sadly was not meant to last

I tried wish/protect Flareon for awhile in gen 6 NU. The tension between wasting that huge attack stat and wanting utility usually meant the offensive Guts set was better. Still, the idea of a mono fire healer was fun!
Here's to another 40k subs.
You forgot to mention that Flareon is the most huggable Eeveelution!
The only thing i know is this flufy boy is my favorite eeveelution and one of my favorite mons, maybe on top 25 (in an universe of 1000+ mons, is good, believe me)
i dare you to use castform for a specific niche
It is gonna be difficult putting Flareon on any team with its weird stats. The only way I can think of is if Flareon finds a way to one hit KO ghost type Pokémon. Flareon has Shadow Ball and the attack stat to make it threatening; however, I am not sure that is enough to threaten Gengar, Misdreavus, or Dusclops.
The first thought that occurred to me here is wondering if flareon really does much that vaporeon couldn’t do here. I suppose taking special attacks from electric types or gengars thunderbolt, but the team has two ground types for that, including dugtrio. It handles steel types a bit better, maybe deals better with celebi? I know the team has suicune already as a bulky water type, but vaporeon has better special defense and hp, deals good damage, wish support, takes fire moves, and isn’t bothered too much by willowisp. It basically has all the traits flareon does at the cost of a fire stab and lower physical attack.
I’m assuming there are threats flareon covers that vaporeon wouldn’t, but I’m curious what those are.
Hmmm it most likely seems to be an environmental aspect to it, kinda like the Pachurisu that Se Jun Park used.
The core 5 were pretty much decided and Flareon might have provided small niches that Vaporeon didn’t.
If I was to guess HP grass from Salamence combined with the fact that this role absorbs Wisp Burns made it to Vaporeon got worn down too quickly during playtests, especially combined with the infinite sand Tyrannitar creates. Wish, Toxic and Protect took move slots already, so Ice Beam might not be run over Surf. Vaporeon also most likely got hit much harder by T-Bolt and I know Gengar did run Giga Drain back then, so Vaporeon might have just been a free HP pack for that threat. For the final battle, Vaporeon most likely would have been better, but for the standard sets most people used, Flareon had a niche combined with the other 5 teammates.
It is notable Flareon can baton pass out of a predicted dugtrio switch in if you are skilled
why would pert ever toxic there instead of surf to hit the switch
If its sp def and speed were swapped, Flareon would be an absolute menace in gen 9. But alas. I hope someday it can get the utility it deserves and become the true nuke it was meant to be.
Hoping for a trick room setup ability, would do fun with brave/quiet flareon or
My favorite eeveelution in gen3ou would be Umbreon, as an alternative Pursuit user that can trap Starmie and Claydol as well as Gengar. However, its inherent weakness prevents it from being usable against other targets like Celebi and Misdreavus, and the metagame as a whole.
The eeveelutions may be bulky on the whole but Wish is a very exploitable recovery and becomes even moreso and hard to compensate for against Sandstorm and Spikes.
It takes extreme ingenuity like that of Mead's, especially now in the wake of many bans, to compose teams and sets that can overcome the eeveelutions' limitations and produce metagame-defining threats.
Flareon should have had 130 attack and 110 speed.
Thanks.
Nah Mate..
Salamence didn't run hydropump in those day? it could probably destroy Flareon, and the physical one can just earthquake it
Crazy buff idea for Flareon;
Replace Guts with Fur Coat cause Guts isn't that useful on a pokemon that's too slow, frail and can't get burned anyways, and give Flareon Sacred Fire and Bitter Blade. Does it make thematic sense? Uhh Flareon has claws right??? Idk fuck it, it needs anything it can get.
It's got trailblaze so like....maybe it can be good...maybe?
Switch Flareon's Special Defense (110) and Speed (65). Does that make Flareon viable?
Jolteon is king. That speed.
THE FLUFFY BEAUTIFUL BOY IS TRYING HIS BEST AND IS KINDA SUCCEEDING
The best underrated fire type is Typhlosion. Can 1v1 Zapdos, Gengar and Jolteon since it doesn't fly. Kills adamant Salamence and Flygon with HP Ice. Focus Punches Tyranitar for an OHKO.
Aside from that, matches up great against Metagross, Jirachi, and Celebi the same as Charizard or Moltres. Can bait Duggy with Substitute to kill with Blaze Boosted Fire Blast or HP Ice.
Teach us about jirachi builds
Flareon needs Raging Fury
I've been using Flareon in Gen 9 Monotype to wall and destroy Special glasscannons as Flutter Main and Iron Valiant
Flareons speed just seems way to low for how fast it look likes obviously not jolteon fast but still way slower then expected
It's too fluffy.
Flareon is my favorite Eevee. Do you think you could talk about Yanma next?
Its pretty good in randbats at least.
Flareon might be the worse but he's a friend
