When i studied in london , i would treat the daily mail as a crossword outlet. i'm not going to lie , they had good crosswords. Perhaps they should just quit doing news and do crossword puzzles.
I just don't understand why they chose to go after the slingshot channel. I mean he's literally just a good natured guy who likes to build weird slingshots and crossbows. Surely there are things far worse than that on CZcams which they could have gone after. It seems like such a strange decision.

Because it was an easy target. It's pretty obvious by all these "attack" stories coming out against youtube/youtubers that they're not doing whatever is logical they're doing whatever is easiest. They could have found some random terrorist video with 4 views and tried to make a story out of it, and no one would care. But when they attack a well known channel and fabricate how it's "teaching people how to do something bad" they get a shit ton of clicks and create passion in ignorant people. It's 100% about creating a good story that is obvious. That's why they went after him.
Internet User I don't think I would ever really throw anyone into the fire XD Fire is scary, and I'm a good natured guy. :P I tend to be of the opinion that no one deserves excess hate. It just seemed silly to me that they chose this guy's channel out of all the other channels on CZcams. It didn't look like an obvious choice to me.
They needed to find an "extremist". ISIS and kiddie porn pedlars do not monetise their videos because they would otherwise have to identify themselves. The angle of adverts on extremist material is rubbish.
To be fair, if people are pulling their ads off of youtube due to the content, why does all news articles still have ads? Some are talking about terrorism, videos of suicide bombs going off, pictures of car crashed, death, misery and some happy thoughts. News today isn't happy, it's focused on tragedy and flaws, etc. With all the respect to the people who works with this and takes risks, and does the job damn well, it is required to ask the question.

Adding to what you said, how can companies who use commercials on tv even be sure of what content that the tv show will portray? For example, if Starbucks had a commercial during Breaking Bad, would Starbucks then want to be pulled from that because it is showing drugs and other explicit ideas/activities? Or maybe they don't want to have the audience that comes with the show? It makes you think about what the company's priorities are here.

It has to do with perspective. There's a difference between a Coke ad on a news article about racism in current events and a Coke ad on a video of a white supremacist making racist comments. Kellogg's pulled their ads from Breitbart because they felt their views didn't align (mostly in the op-ed that can sometimes come off as sexist and alt-right) and I feel this is the same thing.

Phil, I will always wholeheartedly support you. The world needs a news organization willing to say "be skeptical of everybody even me". That speaks volumes. It shows you care about the truth, about how what you say effects people, and about informing your viewers as best you can. It shows you have integrity; something truly lacking in this world where information is so often used to stoke the fires of outrage and mislead for the sake of views/money. It might be an uphill battle but that will always breed you loyalty and the respect of this community.

I agree and think this is an interesting point. Most people probably think that the ads they see are (somewhat) randomly placed, so is anyone really going to see an ad for Pepsi before an edgy or offensive video and think, "WELL NOW I HAVE TO BOYCOTT PEPSI"? I get that advertisers likely don't want their ads running before controversial videos, but I haven't seen this going the other way, i.e., people boycotting certain products or brands based on some ad they saw before a questionable CZcams video.

It's crazy how people and the world evolves. I remember watching you when I was in college when the internet was so much younger. Probably around 2006 or 2007. I stopped watching for a bit in the middle there as you felt like you were a bit more pop culture than I was interested in but I really like the news orientation that you've become. It's crazy to think that vlogger with the weird intros I watched for a few lulz here and there as a kid is building a news network, for lack of a better phrase. Even crazier to think that news is something I'd be interested in following. I guess the twenties transpire pretty similarly for most people because I've felt like I've grown up alongside this channel and the fact that it's grown with me is a nice feeling. Maybe I'm just being sappy and nostalgiac. Keep at it man.

The worst thing about the Daily Mail attack on Yoerg Sprave is that the DM published an article a few years ago showing how to defeat police body armour by aiming a knife at the officers neck and arm pit, where the stab vest doesn't protect them; go figure that's exactly where the London terrorist stabbed and killed the police officer recently. Joerg's video is nothing more than a test against civilian body armour and proving that it isn't fit for purpose. The fact the DM accused him of publishing extremist material, calling his videos vile, that makes my blood boil. Thankfully CZcams have now removed the strike against his account, and allowed him to re-upload the two videos they took down. The Daily Mail is going to pay for attacking one of the nicest entertainers on CZcams; they attack one of us, they attack all of us.

Your news channel would be something I'd love to watch. I stopped following main news outlets a long time ago because of the reasons you mention frequently - clickbaiting, lack of research and doing stuff just for views not to inform people. In contrast, your vieos always seem to be very well prepared and you seem to be well informed.
That's what I miss in main news media, so please make something happen. Even if it's subscription based, I wil gladly sign up. Good luck with your plans!

I myself had a video demonetized for having ONE swear word in it. While this is ridiculous, I can understand why CZcams is reacting this way to news publications calling it out. Hopefully, this whole situation gets sorted out because it frankly sucks that the traditional media is harping the growth of the online community.

Pertaining to the last story in Texas if you're going below the speed limit by 10 miles an hour or more you are allowed to pass even if it is a double yellow line. Crum was going well below the speed limit and it's a very common thing for people to go below 10 miles an hour of the speed limit on those back roads. I am a little biased since I am a biker but the law states what they were doing was completely legal and most people don't understand that law in Texas. The biker even got his ticket dismissed in court since they did nothing wrong. Side note please for the love of God always wear your gear you don't know if you run into a person that crazy and gear will save your life.
it is a law in texas! what the biker did is totally okay and is something i (in my car) have done many times while driving on a two lane, double yellow road because of a truck pulling a trailer going 10-20 miles under the posted speed. it's a law because texas is huge. where my dad lives, it takes half an hour to get to the closest town on a road similar to the one in the video and yeah. if the speed limit is 70 and the guy in front of me is driving 50, i'm passing them. i'm glad that the scum bag was convicted. some bikers are dicks, but that is NO way to drive and "share" the road.
Even being on the back of a bike. You don't realize how vulnerable a biker is until you have ridden one. I've only been on bikes driven by family, I wouldn't trust just anyone. And scooters! Hah everyone passes scooters, like in the same lane, you have to drive as close the the yellow line as possible.
In Ontario where I live its completely legal to cross a double yellow. Double lines are only cautions that passing may be unsafe.

Can we all just agree, ads on online news articles (WSJ, DailyMail, etc.) shouldn't display until the reader reaches the end of the article? That way, companies would have to at least devote time and effort into keeping readers interested throughout the entirety of the story before making any money.
If for some reason you ever do go on sites like those, make sure you're using an AdBlocker. Don't let fake journalists make revenue off of you.

Great video, way to cover the facts, cover your butt and clear things up. I was wondering about the "photoshopped images" thing, now I understand what happened there. Hopefully things get straightened out sometime soon, because we're all getting hit it seems. I've seen a huge drop in revenue as well, even though my content is completely non-controversial and I haven't had videos demonetized.

I feel like this is a bigger story than CZcamsrs are making it out to be. HsHs Ethan is the only one really fighting the fight while all the other big CZcamsrs aren't using their fame and platform to their potential to help the future of CZcamsr and to help the smaller channels. This is a community and creators need to come together and support each other.

something I don't understand is that all these companies and reporters expect youtube to fix their ad problem by pulling their ads and there for taking away money that would otherwise go to making ad placement better? Personally I think people are holding youtube to a standard that just shouldn't be asked of them. They are a website where you put videos of cats and stuff, and by policing ads, youtube put themselves in a position where anyone can complain about an ad put somewhere where it shouldn't be, and now all these companies are holding a figurative gun to youtube's head and if they just ignored it, companies would've just came back, because the place where i see most of my ads are on youtube and google.

What do you think of buzzfeed? I think it's cancer it post some of the most vacuous content yet gets number one on the trending tab on CZcams and in my news feed, and there stories are over a bunch of nonsense but what do you guys think?
I think if twitter made a new tab for subscription based videos they'd really give competition to CZcams. The popularity is already there, with the design of twitter it would be simple and accessible. I think a lot of CZcamsrs would consider jumping ship.

It feels like all the advertisers are somehow just realizing that the internet isn't censored the way TV is. It's kind of ridiculous actually. Have they ever been on the internet before? Why is this suddenly an issue that mainstream media cares about? Also, is advertising on half of these "racist" videos really any worse than advertising on South Park or Family Guy?
I wouldn't call DailyMail mainstream media, but would definately say WSJ is mainstream. My guess is that many of these people feel CZcams is or has become an opponent of traditional news sources and like any 24/7 news source they have time slots and headlines to fill. CZcams certainly has its faults, it could definitely learn to be more public with changes (which it seems they may be learning), but as an open platform for content creation it has to deal with so much more than any traditional media outlet could comprehend.
Anyone should applaud that google tries at all to police their content because they receive an average of five hours of video every minute in uploads. No one can expect them to comb through that. They police based on algorithms and with that comes mistakes. Also I don't think the slingshot channel was a good target, and I don't think I would've demonetized that had I personally watched it anyway. What should probably be done is more refined tracking/filters/tags for monetization. If a company doesn't want to attempt to advertise on videos posted from certain countries or about certain topics that are tagged so be it. It should also be understood and perhaps noted in every commercial that the advertiser does not promote the following content.. I think Jackass (TV show) displayed that at the start of every show.
All that rant aside Phil, love your show man! Been watching for ten years now, so best of luck with all you're going through and know I'll follow your show wherever it goes.

Ryan Grohe I suppose that's fair, most of the time especially lately and in the context we've heard about most, MSM is a product of US viewership not world viewership. Mainstream media has been a derogatory word used this election cycle to portray anything with large US viewership (and predominantly liberal viewership) in a negative light. It just seems that the word itself is being thrown around too much lately to belittle any opposing argument.
Kyle Jett The Economist is quite good. The Mail sometimes does good stuff but it's closest equivalent is the US is probably the New York Post. I think what a lot of Americans don't realize is that British print journalism has always been hyperbolic. The print tabloid is normal for the the U.K. Although I'd say that in general British broadcast journalism is generally higher quality than American broadcast journalism, their print journalism has always been kinda trashy. Sometimes good trashy, sometimes...not so much. The WSJ is still (usually) pretty high quality save for their editorial content, which has never had a very good reputation.
The Daily Mail is very definitely main stream media! I believe it is the biggest online news channel in the world, not to mention one of the biggest selling newspapers in the UK. Whether you call it 'news' is another matter. It has a terrible rep in the UK as being a source of garbage, hate and double standards, as illustrated many times by Phil. IMO it is a powerful source of evil and publishes sensationalist headlines purely for clicks/sales. Sadly people consume it daily and are not intelligent enough to question what they read in it, instead taking everything it says on-board wholesale. Sad state of affairs.

I love CZcams - But this is getting out of hand... They need a shake-up top down!
Jesse Martineau if companies get more control on what videos have adds, they can choose to only allow adds for large youtubers and small youtubers could be left out completely, it will pretty much hinder the growth of youtube.
CZcams just needs time to fix the problem, but they should not hand control on what videos get what adds, they already get adds based on similar interests now youtube needs to make sure extremist videos do not make revenue nor a spotlight.

Here is what youtube should do:
1. lay out a shit load of specific rules anywhere from talking about a bit of controversy to blood (basically anything that could be considered even slightly non kid friendly).
2. let advertisers pick videos they dont want adverts on using a survey containing the rules and allow them to post on what they want (so someone like activision would be advertised on non kid friendly videos whilst disney would be advertised on totally kid friendly videos)
3. youtubers who break rules only get demonetized for specific companies rather than the whole bunch
4. Remove videos that contain real life violence (that is not being shown by an official news company), sexual content (as in female nipples or using nudity for views, hate speech (not being pro trump or anything, i'm talking pure racism), copyright that is not fair use and misleading content.
Also, they should allow youtubers to send staff that violate guidelines which get sent to google. Plus they should give some youtube staff secret channels that can instantly remove videos that violate guidelines in number 4 so we dont get caught violating that guys patent. the staff get sent the videos in secret. Idk what happens if you violate that patent anyway.
That or they could make bots that delete the videos that are sent to google that violate guidelines and have some sort of system that recognizes videos, stopping the video from ever being uploaded again that have already been taken down.

One point I've not seen mentioned much is I'm pretty sure the Mail on Sunday/Mail Online article contravenes the IPSO Editors' Code that the Mail is a part of, which could land them in some pretty sticky legal trouble.

Katykyu Honestly, if you are literally just starting, this won't really impact you. The ones it's really going to hurt are those who are just starting to reach a point where their videos are making enough to allow them to look at doing CZcams as a more full time gig. Someone just starting isn't going to make enough ad revenue either way to have it be anything more than a hobby for the foreseeable future. Unless it never blows over (which is unlikely), I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah Katykyu, if you want to do it, just do it :). IMO you shouldn't be thinking about money anyway, it shouldn't determine your actions. I started my channel in October, and its barely made a couple of dollars, but I'm not caring, I'm loving the process, and being able to make videos that may give someone a laugh, or help someone with a technical problem - the only reason they are monetized at all is just so that one day, there might be a few dollars to pay for components or materials - stuff like that. Even if there was no option to monetise, I'd still be trying to make videos. Very rewarding!

Tracy Schrack I hope that becomes a feature. For the most part, YT tries to correspond ads with the content of the videos, but occasionally I get a Trojan ad on family-friendly content. That's an actual issue I would argue, as opposed to advertisers whining that their ads are associated with terrorism.
I believe they can to a certain extend choose what kind of ads will be placed, however doing so might mean you get less adds overall thus you earn less money. so most people don't really use that.

There is 100% a difference between being censored on someone else's website, which also doesn't fall under freedom of speech.

WSJ asked advertisers what they think of these ads being on videos that promote racism and other bad stuff. That's it. After that it's the advertisers' decision to pull them off or not. Based on the reaction of the advertisers, they seem to be rightfully pissed that Google/CZcams was putting THEIR ads in places where they don't want said ads to be shown.
Why would you boycott a company... for pulling off ads... that are showing on racist videos.... What kind of logic...
