      The Free Speech being suppressed wasn't Ann Coulter but the college groups. If a University can take an unpopular opinion and make it burdensome and difficult for them to meet or speak, denying equal access to their facilities to student groups, then THAT'S the problem.

      +Anime Husky Oh sure, because the media didn't dig that podcast appearance out of their ass right after he was on HBO. They were looking for absolutely anything to bring him down once they saw he was receiving more attention so they had their "journalists" search for any comment that would make him look bad to both liberals and conservatives.
      Once they smelled blood in the water, the liberal media machine (and it's legion of followers) proceeded to call him evil when one of their biggest heroes (George Takei) had made a similar statement in a previous interview. But oh yeah, what George said never made headlines...so as usual selective outrage for everyone!
      Here ask yourself this: How come the sports writer at GQ was able to keep his job after tweeting that "he hoped Patricia Smith would get beat to death" after her appearance at the RNC while many republicans lost their jobs for tweeting/posting a lot less towards liberals during the election? How come all the major media outlets didn't pick up that tweet and spread it everywhere like they did this week with Jesse Waters offhand comment about Ivanka on "The Five"?
      GQ allowed the writer to apologize and change his name on Twitter. If that was the other way around, it would have been a headline on every major site and he would have lost his job.
      I'm an independent and far left liberals are the ultimate hypocrites.

      Just a question. Could someone say w.e they want for free speech? Because imagine milo coming into my place of work to give a speech. Don't I have every right to kick him out? Is it me opposing his free speech because I just genuinely dislike the guy. Hmmm or should I just let him talk whereever. When do free speech override everything when free speech itself has its limits.

    I'm a American Socialist who has my opinion ridiculed and not tolerated much like the less than desirable Ann Coulter. I'm a firm believer in the First Amendment and believe the best way to shoot down "fascism", is to let it be said, then counter it. If you do this enough you get what is called debate. That s what is needed to end someone's ignorant speech, not silencing it.

      So instead of a first class ticket to Fiji, you get $50 off of your next 200 flights to North Dakota on flights taken at midnight between Dec 5th and Dec 20th. All vouchers expire at the end of the year.

      +Friendly Faucet but not entirely. So perhaps the private funding might allow them to? Either way, in the one case it was students who wanted him not to come. They're in their right to oppose that (not to the extremes seen, though I doubt they represented a majority of those uncomfortable with his presence). Especially given he's attacked (verbally) specific people in his speeches before, it might be a case of safety and comfort for some rather than "I don't agree!!" I think that kind of reason is a totally valid reason to bar someone from speaking - student safety and comfort. I'm not familiar with how the US runs colleges, but in the UK the student unions are separately run to university faculty and the SU can in some cases no-platform certain speakers.

If they can't guarantee that safety because of expected riots. Should they still hold the event and potentially have that person be harmed? If they don't cancel, they are endangering someone, if they do cancel they are oppressing someone.

      Worker's rights movement didn't end till people got killed. Civil rights movement also had a plethora of casualties. That is unfortunately how things are. Best solution i can think of is to fully disclose what the host's safety precautions are, the expected resistance, and then just say 'look, we can't guarantee your safety in this, are you sure you want to go ahead and do this. Not just to the speaker but to the audience as well. I bet most people who give enough of a crap to turn up to such events will say 'absolutely'.

    • @DarthKraytofKansas
      @DarthKraytofKansas Před 7 lety +11

      The speakers should sign a waver, and decided if they want to take the risk. The police, should be required to enforce the law and do their jobs. The speakers should be allowed their own private security. If anyone tries to use violence to harm a speaker, that person should face extra charges by attempting to suppress the freedom of speech at an organized public event instead of joining the debate, perhaps. Like serious felony charges, on top of whatever assault they commit. Most of these rioters should probably be criminally charged.

      I mean I'm not surprised at all. Have you ever been in a Nordstrom before and looked at their clothes up close? Speaking as a female, their clothing is about the same quality as shit from Forever21 (or worse) yet 3x the cost for no reason. I've actually made it a joke with my friends to go to Nordstrom, find an ugly piece of clothing, guess how much it costs and then gawk at the absurd prices they try to reach for.
      I found a really thin, black, trash-bag-esque skirt on their fucking _clearance_ rack that was "on sale" for $60. If it was thrown into a consignment shop it'd be worth all of $2 and people still wouldn't buy it because of how tacky it looked.
      Also once my friend and I saw this (admittedly kind of pretty, but still average looking) black dress with some sequin and mesh fabric in it. It was hanging by itself in display of the aisle so clearly they wanted to show it off as some kind of one-of-a-kind dress. No joke.... it was $1200. For something that looked like an average club-wear dress. Nordstrom is a fucking joke.

    With the Berkeley college thing, every time they cancel another speaker due to protests, they're just showing these protestors that their tactics work. The college is simply encouraging more violence and more oppression of free speech every time they bow down to the will of these violent rioters. Somebody needs to volunteer to speak at the college no matter what happens. To step up and say, "I accept the risk. I will speak, even if there's a bomb threat, or violent protest, or anything. Put me in a bullet proof vest, and get me on that stage." Speakers, and the college, need to show the rioters that they aren't scared, and free speech can not be suppressed forever.

    I had a discussion with a friend of mine today regarding the Ann Coulter situation. Her opinion being that it was Berkley's right as a 'private entity' to stop her from speaking on campus and that Berkley's reasoning- that they couldn't guarantee a safe environment for the speech- was a completely just one. My opinion is very different regarding this situation. Although I agree Berkley has that right to say reject a speaker, they also have an obligation to provide equal opportunities to all of their students. By saying Coulter couldn't speak and rescheduling it on a day where few students would even be on campus, they were stifling the opportunity for a group of their own students, to learn. On the matter of it 'not being a safe environment,' I believe Berkley could have put precautions into place to make it so it was safe. Bumping up security, releasing a statement to students that if they begin to 'riot' they will be immediately arrested/detained and that they will not tolerate any violent behavior. These things are doable and I am almost certain that if the situation had a liberal speaker and conservative rioters, they would put these precautions into place. It truly upsets me that the college and many of their liberal students aren't practicing what they preach.

Don't know what video I heard it in but you mentioned Dragon Age Inquisition, which is my favorite video game/franchise. Anyway, just wanted to say I love when you nerd out about movies and video games etc. I agree with so much of your content/opinions, and I love that you leave everything open for people to comment and discuss with you and each other. I hope the universe sends good vibes you and your family and your friends. Love, a new member of the Nation :)

    That Heineken ad was like one of 4 ads I've not skipped in the last 5 years. And again 1 of 4 I actually told friends about. It goes so damn well with this anti-free speech issue too. When you refuse to listen and let yourself be fueled only on hate, you get nowhere fast. Or you do but it's a trip to jail, or hospital.
    Also ripped jeans. Might sounds like fun for Rich people to throw money away. But my fake rich dad bought me ripped jeans as a gift when I needed new ones, and I had to suffer because of it. Even in winter. When they are doing these horrible fashion trends, they need to be forbidden from doing them in child sizes. Don't enable these bad parents please.

    I totally agree with you on the free speech situation. This culture and what we achieved is build on the concept of free speech and separates us from the hell of a life in countries where they don't have that concept. But as I just watched before I might start thinking about birth control to somehow avoid a total collapse of our planetary boundaries. I keep leaving comments since I really enjoy exactly this concept on your show what somehow connects to the idea of free speech and understanding, exchange of information and also why that Heineken add is super awesome (as they are often)..
    I'm happy to be able catching up some news. Nik Moore a terrorist is very different. Being a member of a terror group is a crime so they'd be arrested. But if they were an outsider that wished to voice support of ISIS, yes. They should be able to. Like Phil says, they'd be destroyed in literally any debate.

    • @odioaleman
      @odioaleman Před 7 lety +2

      No, because we as a society have establish the limits of free speach.
      One of those limits is incitations to terrorism, is in the law, but not letting a person with different political ideology speak is the main reason free speach was created

  • @01gharms
    @01gharms Před 7 lety

    I have noticed this for years. I stopped teaching C# a few years back because despite my classes not having ANYTHING to do with politics, the students would demand to know my opinions on matters, then pillory me for not sharing their EXACT opinions. It got to the point where I felt threatened in my own class for not sharing identical ideals with the students, so I gave up my tenure and wrote a book or two and went back to work in the valley.
    Colleges used to be a place where parents would spend a good chunk of money to send their children off to be exposed to differing backgrounds, beliefs, and agendas. That made for all around, well rounded students and adults who were capable of understanding the opposition, even if they didn't adopt their views. Now, it's either "Think exactly what I do or be ridiculed" or "I don't want to hear anything that isn't my opinions filtered through an echo chamber". These colleges have turned into indoctrination centers. The last straw for me was when the faculty started discussing removing MATH from the cirriculum and replace it with "diversity training" instead. Because who needs math, right? It's far more important that they be taught not to think for themselves and only think what others have decided is best.

  • @cillianbrouder
    @cillianbrouder Před 7 lety +37

    There is a serious double standard with free speach. Regardless of a person's beliefs, opinions, etc. they should be able to have equal free speach. For free speach to be free speach it can't vary from person to person. Anyone who trys to silence someone's beliefs/ opinions in the name of free speach is hypocritical and dangerously naïve.

    Ok, I'm liberal AF, and I have complicated thoughts about the Ann Coulter situation. As things stand, I think it's terrible that they were forced to cancel her speaking engagement due to safety concerns. There were so many other ways to peacefully and effectively (two things that don't always overlap) protest her message and even her presence. If she was booked and had a receptive audience, she absolutely should have the right to safely speak her piece. No matter how reprehensible I personally find it.
    But I also think that no one *owes* someone a platform to share their opinion, which seems to be the complaint in a lot of situations similar to this one. If someone has something to say and I object to their message, I have no moral or ethical obligation to give them a space to spread their message on a platform that I control. For example: I don't expect to publish my think piece on preventing antisemitism on Breitbart. They are well within their rights to refuse to let me on their site. By the same token, a lot of the arguments about free speech restriction is that conservatives find themselves unwelcome in liberal spaces. If you were invited or if you have a receptive audience, you should absolutely be able to safely share your outlook. But so many snowflakes make a huge stink when they're disinvited due to a conflict of values. If you were invited to a venue or platform because you intentionally obscured or misrepresented your message, they have every right to bar you from using that platform once the truth comes to light. It's important to make the distinction between scenarios like this one with Coulter, where her safety was genuinely threatened, and other situations where people throw a hissy fit because they were barred from somewhere they had no right to be in the first place.
    Also, Phil, I disagree with you that letting idiots share their message wherever they please will lead to their own undoing. It's much more likely that they'll manage to successfully spread their idiocy. Look who became president! You yourself have repeatedly debunked a lot of his alternative facts. But they didn't seem to hurt him at all, considering he managed to win the presidency. I'm not saying that restricting free speech is the solution. But "they'll eventually become their own undoing" is not a good defense because just as often it turns out to be the opposite.

    United should be forced to pay all airlines like 200 million dollars, not so much because of forcing the raise in how much they can pay for kicking someone off, but because thanks to them it's much more common knowledge that there is a cap.
    EVERY TIME I fly if they overbook and start with "Who is willing to give up their seat for $100" I will say FUCK YOU I want $10,000.
    And even if someone else says "Oh I'll take the $100" I will shout "Hold out for $10,000 idiot"
    If every overbooked flight cost them 10 grand, they'll stop overbooking flights tomorrow.

    • @conedx
      @conedx Před 7 lety

      @elzizo01 whole class dedicated specific to game theory economics, no. Classes on Economics in general and game theory economics as part of said class... yes.
      It's interesting that you just threw out a term rather than explain what you feel makes it relevant to what I said, but okay.
      I'm not sure YOU understand economic game theory. On an overbooked flight the airline MUST get someone to give up their seat. Thus giving all the power to the passengers. If all the passengers know they could get up to $10,000 for their seat then THAT becomes the starting point for negotiations.
      So fine they don't pay $10,000 every flight. They pay $9000 this flight $7000 the next flight. Whatever, whatever. If they are paying over thousands of every damn flight, they will stop overbooking.
      The point is, people need to know how much their seats are worth.

    When in high school all of my teachers told me that while you are in school " You have no rights on school grounds. You have to obey the rules of the school. You can make you're opinions made and we can have discussions but ultimately when you're in school we make the rules" this was for all students even those who were of age. Colleges being private institutions a lot of times such as Berkeley isn't just a school but private property so therefor I can understand why they might censor some things though ultimately a college should encourage discussion on both sides. It's very likely they don't want their students exposed to negative or deceitful people as they're impressionable and they don't want hateful or nonfactual speech to be seen as okay just becuase a guest encouraged it. There was a public speaker who had very conservative and racist views coming to a local college to speak about his opinions on immigration which were very biased in my town despite a population of a lot of immagrant students. The school was going to cancel his speech but instead let him speak anyway. Is it against free speech? I don't personally feel so because there's a time an place. When in school speakers should be people who are factual or who can lead a discussion not a personal opinion.

    I am genuinely concerned for students in my generation. I go to Berklee (different one), which is also a relatively liberal community made in part to our diverse student body. However the idea of diversity to me does not come from just the people around me. But opinions, stories, and attitudes that come from different experiences other than my own. And I rely on those to learn new ideas and maybe even embrace them so that I can be more accepting. For that to me is true diversity and if we shut out all ideas that we consider unacceptable, then how can we say our current idea are acceptable?
