      ARbenSRbarGR I'm sure the vast majority here wouldn't hesitate. however the issue here is that the way the woman's hanging would actually put the person's life at risk to save them. Talking someone out of suicide is one thing, and forcing them up with one arm carrying the weight of their body is another. Chances are they'd be pulling you down with them since they're not keen on getting back up.

    I've lived in the gulf region, including Kuwait and cannot say I'm surprised. The maids and all the lower social class workers are treated like slaves. Maids have no rights at all and they get hit, abused and raped by the locals. It's really sad... unfortunately no one can help them because they go there to get paid 300$/month instead of 30$/month :(

      @NyaanVegan Před 7 lety +9

    • @Army-cs9dz
      @Army-cs9dz Před 7 lety +10

      Harris Robin Kalash I'm actually questioning where you stayed I'm from Dubai and maids being abused is kind of rare it's actually a sin in our religion to harm maids plus it is favored to make the maids part of the family as of buying them clothes for Eid or for their families, buying them gifts so the can return to their family with stuff, giving extra cash, and taking them with you on trips so they can have fun

    • @HarrisRobinKalash
      @HarrisRobinKalash Před 7 lety +15

      army 43 I've lived in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Re-reading my statement, I am making it sound like it happens all the time but you and I both know it does happen and that is still the problem. I have witnessed a case in Abu Dhabi where 2 locals (brothers) raped their maid. They went to my high school and nothing happened to them. Whether it's rare or not, it's still a problem. Even if 5% of maids are raped that's 5% too many. Obviously there are no statistics on any of these things since the people guilty of this never face consequences so instead of questioning where I've lived I would question how reliable your justice system is over there when one goes as a foreigner.

    • @Army-cs9dz
      @Army-cs9dz Před 7 lety +3

      army 43 Dubai is like the most progressive and liberal place in the gulf region.Countries like Kuwait ,Saudi have a lot more incidents with their maids being raped or killed. In Qatar the construction employees are usually immigrants from nations like India and they are treated very badly leading to death for many of them .Sadly this kind of stuff is not reported much by foriegn media .

  • @artemis64z
    @artemis64z Před 7 lety +164

    The first video is terrible. I used to live in Kuwait and went to middle school and high school there. Stories of maids jumping off balconies were all too frequent. These maids have their passports taken against their will upon entering the country, and they are locked inside homes where they receive emotional and physical abuse. It's sickening and Kuwait does so little to crack down on abusive employers.

      Liam Berthou-Lochet Person who currently lives in Kuwait here! Neighbours tend to either have the same situation with their maids. Although to really understand why they don't do anything you'd have to understand Kuwaiti culture, for one maids are not allowed to leave their employer unless they command it, as if they leave without the consent of the employer the maids will be arrested no matter how abused they are. The maids are basically helpless in this country and that's the dark truth about Kuwait.

    I mean, white the color not the ethnicity, is known for being the color of purity, virginity, and in some ways cleanliness...that's why women wear white in their wedding day. Obviously it is less likely that women are virgins when they get married now, but the wedding dress is white because years ago women were virgins when getting married. Plus Nivea took the picture down acknowledging the way people may see this statement and see it as a racial attack.

    • @celinak5062
      @celinak5062 Před 7 lety +23

      Fatimah Bint Layla Sorry that's not why most people wear white, it's to look royal or at least rich enough to be able to wear white without it looking/getting dirty, and queen Victoria was the one that popularised it for the wedding dress, photos also had an influence on civilians being able to share this.
      Before, you'd just wear the one other dress you owned (the nice one) or you borrowed it or inherited it.

    • @Fatimah-cs5co
      @Fatimah-cs5co Před 7 lety +48

      Celina k actually that is UN true... most people who were rich rarely wore white because white was specific to the day of marriage...most of them wore what they had made, their maids have made, or their parents. Darker colors were classy were as prostitutes wore bright colors like yellow and light greens...darker red, greens, browns even were classy. Most undergarments were white or light colors but no men were allowed to see you in them. A traditional wedding is based off the wedding of Catholics, which most of the royal families were. The Bishops wear white because they are unmarried, remaining celibate for their lord.

    • @pjpollina5701

    Classic feminism (I fought and marched starting in the 1970s) also swung to silly (Mrs is insulting, girl is invalidating) for a bit. Awareness, sensitivity and "offendibility" around Black issues in America are going to do the pendulum swing as well. And even people of color (like myself) who point this out are going to offend the super-sensitive. Someone is that state (as I was in the late 80s to 90s) see things like language as institutionalized discrimination. At some point we mature and focus on truly harmful discrimination instead (fighting for equal wages for the female firefighter rather than the terminology which will follow). Give it time Philip, the movement still has some growing up to do.

    What some people do in Arab countries is really shitty. When my family and I were flying back to the US from Ethiopia, we had a layover flight in the UAE. We went a mall in Dubai and some people were giving us dirty looks. I didn't understand why they were doing this but when I asked my mom, she told me it was because people go to Ethiopia to hire maids to work in these rich, Arab countries to make money for their family and their employers keep them in the country by taking their passports away. Then back at the airport, we saw a long line of young Ethiopian women who were going to be part of this maid labor system, and its sucks that it occurs. I really appreciate that this practice has some light shinning on it now, thanks Philip!

      Hypothical question if we say the cause is islam right hypothecially then what about other murders that happen,, where the murderers are not muslim, we look for other causes right. What I thnik thats their always more than one underlying cause, the middle east is no beautiful place I agree but what i think it is, is a time bubble. When you look anywhere else you see countries modernizing and having open viewes and speech but middle east does not have that. I believe its more of culture and views so I can't say islam is the problem, if Islam is the problem then it wouldn't have spread. Of course their are radical muslims etc each religion has their own sect but its also combined with culture and the place they are. If you look in places in United States you see more peaceful muslims but when you look on the other side u see "radicalize" ones. So the question how do we change people's views?

    I'm 16 so I'll give a little insight on what I've noticed with gen-z, at least where I live. First of all, most of them probably don't even know what Google+ is, so that isn't realistic at all. Also as far as the coolest brands thing go's, unless they had to chose from a list, I don't know anybody that looks at Google and Oreo or any of those brands really, as "Cool" unless my definition of that word is very skewed. The video games thing probably Isn't to far off but, but I'm not so sure about Pokemon, Minecraft or Zelda. At my school most people my age look at Pokemon, Nintendo products, and especially Minecraft as childish or "nerdy" for lack of a better term. And the music I think really only applies to the more hipster-ish group of people because most people only listen to modern rap. This part could explain everything mentioned previously, but it seems to me like there is a big separation of interests, humor and even social behavior between the younger and older groups of gen-z. A large majority of the people I've met under 15-16 seem like they have nothing at all in common with people older than that, and the number of anti-social people feels like it doubled. I think this might be because the cut off point for growing up without all the tech and internet stuff we have now is midway through gen-z, but I'm open to other ideas. I live in a small town in Michigan so I'm sure this doesn't apply everywhere, but that's just what I've noticed.

    Phil, I don't know of you're going to see this I just wanted to say that I'm from Kuwait and our household has always had maids and we treat them like family because that's what they are. I know many families who are the same way, just politely asking others not to jump to hating the whole country and its citizens because of the crazy employer in that video.

    • @viddha.art1955

      BAM Films you call them maids. These women are bought from "maid" (slave) traders for thousands of dollars. The "maids" are then paid a pittance, to pretend to the free world that they are not slaves. Sometimes they are not paid at all. Its modern day slavery. Stop kidding yourself. Your family might treat your "maid" well and consider her family. But the fact is she is a slave. You should take a good look at videos on youtube disclosing the slavery in Kuwait, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Open your eyes. Islamist muslims consider slavery as a Allah given right because the Prophet Muhammad was a slave owner, sex slave owner and a slave trader. He condoned/s muslims to own slaves. Not only that, Prophet Muhammad considered those he captured in invasions, as war booty keeping the ones he wanted for himself and then giving the rest to his soldiers to enslave and enjoy. Its all there in the Hadith and the Quran. ISIS are practicing exactly what the Prophet did himself. Prophet Muhammad said I am triumphal through terror. Islam is a religion of submission. Slave submits to master, wive and daughter submit to husband and father, and man submits to Allah. A total and complete line of subordination and submission for Allah. If everyone sticks to their station there is said to be peace and so it is with Sharia law. Islam is nothing more than a religion/ideology of oppression. How can anyone in their right mind consider anyone who condones slavery as the perfect man.

    • @bamflyer
      @bamflyer Před 7 lety +57

      v the amount of ignorance in your statement is astounding, slavery is not okay and while there are households who might abuse their ability to have a maid, it's not commonplace. Our maids come straight from their home countries seeking opportunities here, they are not sold on a slave trade, and they are paid monthly with weekly days off and vacations as well, in my household our family pays for their tickets to go home and see their families, we also paid for their weddings and bought them a house in the Philippines to raise their children when they have them, considering some of our maids were with us from childhood to call them anything but family is insulting, and you can take ur ignorant racsit ass and shove it. I was just saying not to generalise and you literally did just that, and if you actually did research you would find that in the Arab world slavery was commonplace but Islam sought to end it, the prophet and the prophets cousin used to buy slaves just to set them free

    • @AzizAbdulAlAwadhi15
      @AzizAbdulAlAwadhi15 Před 7 lety +25

      Some of these ''maids'' that u are talking about work in countries such as Kuwait because that is the highest paying jobs they get. Forget the fact that they dont pay taxes, food and essentials and the money they get is all for themselves. They use that money so there kids could have a better future and education without these maid jobs there would be a lot of poor ethopians and indians in there own countries. Also dont forget that they choose these jobs we dont force them to do it. Most treat them as families like i do, some are unthinkable but there was justice in the end.

    • @viddha.art1955
      @viddha.art1955 Před 7 lety +18

      BAM Films I'm not being racist. You don't even know what race I am. I'm simply stating the fact that many "maids" from the Philippines are indeed bought for many thousands of dollars and are in fact slaves being paid a pittance, if at all. As I said your family may indeed treat your "maid" well. BUT there are thousands of instances where these women are treated appallingly, hence they jump to their deaths. The prophet Muhammad brought and traded in slaves. He captured and enslaved young people and children. He had sex slaves, this is fact. He also was a pedophile, having a child bride practicing "thighing" on her until she was nine. After which he had full sex with her from then and there after. Most westerners would consider this rape. Fact. The Quran condones slavery and muslims were the main slavers historically and still are. Don't delude yourself. The Islamic nations have outlawed slavery to fall into line with the free world.

    In my district, about a third of my school uses google plus as unblocked social media on school wifi. Not of course commonly, but definitely as a "I don't want to pay attention in class but I don't want to lose my phone or figure out how to get through the smooth wall" cop out.

    The nivea thing is exhausting. Like, advertisers just need to try harder, it just seems like incidental outrage is the new advert. I'm from south east asia so colorism in beauty advertising isn't new (but white people don't care so whatever).
    But this lotion brand needs to remember that white isn't purity... its ashy. And when you're ashy you reach for lotion. There's your slogan.

      its funny because it's literally one of the aspects/virtues associated with white, just like red is passion or rage. its an actual preexisting thing. It is not about skin color but literal color wheel colors. i have NO idea what the people against it are on about, other than maaybe the potential for rewording it a tiny bit better, but even that seems kinda unnecessary.

      her clothing is also white, and the deodorant is right in the corner. also, Nivea sells things like deodorant, not white people. it's hard to NOT know what they're talking about. It's either gonna be a white bar of soap, lotion or deodorant, or a white bottle. I will agree that the deodorant should have been more centered in the imagery and more clearly labeled as deodorant, but that's about it (coupled with my previous point on wording it slightly differently).

      I just want to point out that your first statement is wrong. Her CLOTHING is white, but in no part of the picture do we see her skin color. She could be Latina, she could be Indian, she could be a number of skin colors or races.
      The majority of deodorant on the market sold in solid/stick form is white, also. So that's probably what they were referring to.

    Netflix did eventually separate into two different services, though - they were just smarter about it and didn't do it all at once. They started charging for streaming and DVDs separately, and then they turned the DVD rental service into DVD.com. They got what they wanted with less backfire by being smarter about it.
    So, yes, they knew when to listen, but also believed their idea was better and just found another way to approach it. And I'm sure going forward, they'll always remember you can't make big changes all at once. A good company learns not just to adapt, but how to adapt.

    Me as a person from the Gulf region completely disagree and is distributed with the treatment these people are using. It is wrong PERIOD. I don't understand why would people do this? what are they going to benefit from doing this? what type of human does such a think?. People like this show the world and their kids that it is okay to treat people like this. Yes the woman was in the wrong she should have helped her because it's the right thing to do, they say well she could have pulled me with her, in the video there were two different voices both of them could have helped but they chose to film and mock the housekeeper. We have a housekeeper in our family and that's what she is A MEMBER OF OUR FAMILY, we treat her with respect. I am so angry at this, because she could potentially get away with it because no one would belive the housekeeper, it has happened way too many times and I have witnessed this happening, when I tried to stop it I was yelled at by the owner by telling me "She works for me, you don't pay her salary and she was brought here under my name". I will keep losing faith in Humanity.

    Then they wind up getting beaten, overworked, locked in the house and not getting paid for months. it's awful and needs to stop.
    I think Malaysia stopped their citizens going over to Saudi at one point because of the abuse getting out of hand.

    So many terrible things in the world the go unnoticed and unreported. Worse yet, when it is reported, it's often reported incorrectly or without all the facts, which in turn spawns trolling insensitive remarks from people who think they somehow they are an authority on the subject matter and have all the answers. People who think they know everything but don't and are adamant about their own hubris just piss me off. But, hey people are entitled to their own opinions, just not their own facts.

    Phil, in a lot of ways, you are a perfect example of exactly what is wrong with news. You see something with insufficient information to fully explain, but you say "This is what happened." Then a little more information comes in, or more speculation, or even just a potential alternative explanation, and you shift to "Oh I was wrong, this is what happened instead," when the thing is *you still don't know.* You have no idea what version of events is true, all you can do is compile and curate stories told to you, but you pass it on to others as if you know what you're talking about. You do this a lot.

    • @23wtb
      @23wtb Před 7 lety

      And the thing is, in the comment sections of this video, people are saying "Someone should be punished!" and even taking it a step further: "What can we do about this?" Some of these people, who've only been exposed to 2 different stories, but you told them which one is true, have a desire to action based on the 3rd-hand information you told them was true. They literally want to go out themselves and punish whoever was the antagonist, and you've stated as a fact who that is (even though you don't actually know). See the problem here?

    I wouldn't just take the maid at her word either. I get she could have been desperate but there's some weird flags that are raised in my mind when someone says they were saving themselves by jumping off a seven story height. Not to mention it also doesn't make her saying hold me make sense. It doesn't make sense if she really thought her employer was trying to kill her. I don't know what happened but the stories from both sides seem to have holes.
