  • No partner? No problem! Follow this simple method to develop the basic body movements and skills you need to improve your striking defense (and ability to counter) by practicing shadow fighting!
    We've taught these techniques to hundreds of beginners, and thus have been able to identify the most common mistakes people do when attempting to practice striking defense, and have developed specific drills to correct these mistakes!
    Furthermore, although partner practice is essential and very valuable, it is always beneficial for beginners to practice their striking defense solo first to understand the movements, and it is a great way for martial artists of all levels to keep on improving when a partner isn't available!

    Question for YOU! 😎 Have you ever practiced your striking defense SOLO? Or is this a new concept for you? And after watching this video, have you (or will you) practice your striking defense without a partner? Let us know below! 👇 - Patrick

      They didn`t teach me any defense at my Shaolin class during the 80`s, all the students just relied on movement as defense, is there any striking defense moves in Jeet Kun Do?

      Mark Ant - I’m no specialist in JKD, but it’s inspired heavily from boxing, which definitely teaches many of these techniques, as well as Wing Chun, which has some valuable concepts, but IMO quite unrealistic practice methods. The most valuable element of JKD is its philosophy: take what is useful, discard the rest, and cosntantly evolve. That’s what we’re doing with EMA! The world of MA is quite different now than back in the 70’s... Hope this helps, and thanks for your comment! 🙏 - Patrick

    I will try your parrying deviating techniques.
    Yes i do practice striking defense solo, each strike is preceeded by a dodge/block.
    I am not planning to be the attacker.

    Interesting video. I combine some defense in my shadow boxing or bag work, but not the whole range you have here. I’ll try it out.
    One question I had was regarding rolling with the punch. I struggle to lean towards the strike with your head to brace for impact while rolling back. The two moves feel like opposites at time. How would you recommend drilling this? Should I move my upper body and head towards the strike but shift my base away for example?

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the comment, Sacha. Good question. I would say think of it less as leaning towards the strike, but more as hiding and retracting your chin. The natural consequence will be to expose your forehead as a barrier, but it can still be done with backwards momentum to match the rest of your body’s movement. Hope this helps!

    Hi Patrick, this question is not related to this video and you might have no clue lol, but whenever I punch, the joint where my sternum and collar bone meet pops in and out, it doesn't hurt but makes a reasonably loud sound ( at least for me ) you may have no idea what I'm talking about but maybe you've come across it before?

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  Před 4 lety +3

      Hey Reuben, yes indeed, seen similar cases before. Usually the answer is more resistance training to increase your muscle mass and hold everything together better. In this case mostly for chest & shoulders, but a full-body, balanced program is always best. Check out this video for ideas: czcams.com/video/FaVCr4fPNzY/video.html. Also, please note that I can’t see you, and I’m no doctor... you might have an underlying condition. If you feel bad pain (other than burning from the workout), stop and consult a physician. Hope this helps! - Patrick
