How do you feel about the master’s actual fighting abilities and do you think he can defend himself from a random attack by a skilled fighter? I know from experience that traditional martial arts are more effective in self defense than consensual combat (unless it’s against the same style and skill level ) but I do believe that they work against unsuspecting attackers. Be safe and thank you for your great content and respectful enthusiasm.

If you want to feel it very strong try standing on stake Zhan zhuang. Find a quiet place outside and a big healthy tree. Hold you hand (lau gung which you learned) facing below the navel (dan tien) in a triangle. Root your roots from your kidney pt in feet deep to the earth. Put a timer for 15 minutes, close your eyes, relax and deep belly breath or reverse breath, tongue up. See you in eternity :).

Hey Jesse, I can tell you that the moment Sifu Shi Heng Yi showed you these hand positions at 4:52 I (and other Craft practicioners probably as well) already knew what's going to happen, that's like most basic exercise in any forms of Craft that deal with concept of energy itself. So for you to get this feeling that quick I can tell you, you have potential and can develop more in the area, also I like his approach to this exercise as Sifu throws out the visualisation, which is fine if someone cannot grasp it at all. Great vid :)

This particular wording is indeed very beautifully put but it is in fact a basic concept in Gongfu. The concept is called "Six harmonies" or "Liu he" in Chinese. This again is seperated into "Three intern harmonies" and "Three external harmonies". The three internal harmonies are: Attention in harmony with the mind, energy in harmony with attention, power in harmony with energy. The energy in harmony in attention is what he was refering to in the video. The three external harmonies are more simple. Shoulder and hips in harmony (moving in harmony), elbows and knees in harmony with, hands and feet in harmony.
I thought you might be interested in this. If you want to learn more about this concept look up "Six harmonies in gongfu" or "liu he in gongfu" and look for the "three internal harmonies".

@@americanosbadassius9292what is real? What your mind tells you about the world? What science understand? There is a branch of philosophy that is studying what is real and the debate is long as long as the human been.
Perception can be guided by the intention of the mind, the mind is deeply connected by a very intricate system of proprioreceptors in every inch of our body, in the skin and inside our body.
The communication is done by electrical current and chemical signals.
Chi is a natural sensation of these electrical waves that pervade our bodies. More than that. The simplest explanation of chi I have found, so it’s easy to understand: 氣 is traditionally the sum of two characters 米 (rice, carbohydrates), and 气 (air, oxygen), and so it represents the reaction between these two chemicals compounds.
The energy released during this combustion is called 氣, qi, chi.
So it doesn’t exist, but can you leave without it?

Many years ago, my grandfather told me an interesting story about Chi and karate.
Premise: I am a former karate practitioner (mainly Goju-Ryu, Kenshinkan and some years of Kyokushin) even though it has been many years since I stopped. Back in the day, my grandfather was also a Karate practitioner, mostly Kempo, in his days as a investigative police in the '60s.
When it was My turn, he had stopped his practice for many years, but he still recalled many many lessons, especially from bunkai and sparring, that had helped him a lot in his law-enforcing work.
So, one day we're taking about karate, our trainings and our experiences and of course I'm being a bit blown away by a couple of anecdotes when his karate training proved extremely helpful in his work back in the day. At one point though, we mention Chi (or Ki, we used the japanese pronunciation) and he says to me:
"There is something thought that I never managed to wrap My head around. One day I'm in lesson, and there comes a foreign Master that was in exchange for a brief period. We start doing normal chudan tsuki and chudan uke.. all is going normal until this Master stops for a moment, promps me to strike him again and when he blocks, I suddently felt a surge of weakness and tiredness. Didn't fall, but My balance was a bit compromised for a second and even felt a bit light-headed. I ask him what the hell was that, and he explains it to me: it turns out that this guy was also very involved in the study of Ki, what is ir, how it works and such. So when he blocked, he focused his energy into his hikite: but he was visualizing "grabbing" some form of my energy from my stomach and 'pulling it away', sort of speak. And he integrated that in the simple hikite with the hand he wasn't using for his uke. I don't know what was it, I don't know how, I don't understand how it is possible but from that day on I never questioned that there *is* something going on, when we hear about Ki. Shame that nowadays is being so misinterpreted"
So.. of course: this is something that happened to my grandpa. I never experienced something like that, and I tend to think about all this stuff with the same amount of healthy skepticism that the next guy.
But watching this video, the memory came rushing back and just wanted to share 😂

That was a cool story. Thanks for sharing.
My grandmother was born and raised in Okinawa. She practiced judo and studied ki. She moved to Canada after the war and began training Canadian military forces in basic practical judo. Stuff that could be learned quickly enough to help the troops. This is where she met my grandfather who was doing a joint training camp with the Canadians.
He was so taken by her ability to throw around full size men when she was only 100lbs. She credited the study of ki bringing awareness to her internal structure for being able to do that.
When I was little and would fall and get hurt as little kids do (my family lived at her house for yrs growing up) she would come over and tell me to focus my mind on giving her the pain while she put her hands close to the injury and the pain would feel better. I'm mostly sure there was a huge placebo effect here as I already regarded her as some super woman haha but when a placebo works is it still not viable?
Even into her 70s she could still throw me at will on the mats, and it's not like I didn't train. I just wish I trained with her more. She would show me basic things, but said she is not a master, and not qualified to teach, I would need to seek out my own teacher her to move forward. In the 80s, especially after the popularity of the karate kid movie the chances of finding a master to teach was very slim. Too many people out for the money and sadly, I never found one.
She passed away a long time ago in her late 90s, born in 1911 she was a great connection to a time before Japan's industrialization.

The power of chi is truly incredible when you can get in touch with it - often on that simple exercise first shown, sometimes when I have tried Tai Chi, and also in my previous Shotokan Practice, in some stances and Kata. An important dimension I think we should spend more time on, instead of leaving our bodies more and more into (ironically) the digital world.

The most clear phorm of Chi is orgasm, a massive release of energy. Many professional boxers refuse to ejaculate for long periods and store unusual amounts of chi in their body. This is a simple form of iron body. When you consume food, food is broken down and becomes a kind of chi that nourishes your body. Chi manifests as body heat, a easily observable aspect of existence. Life force exists in your voice and is sent out thru your eyes.

No. Chi (ch'i) means "vital energy". It's a key principle in Chinese medicine and applied in Chinese martial arts. Chi flows through pathways in the body called meridians, with many points along those meridians used in acupuncture to regulate or correct chi flow imbalances. The state of the body that is released and energetic is Sung. Yi is similar to our notion of consciousness; it means mind and intention, though the term is used somewhat differently in martial arts versus Chi Gung or Chinese medicine. Cultivating and directing Chi requires focusing with Yi. Only when Chi is cultivated and enhanced can it be converted into Jin (jing) which is power in various forms. So each of those terms are different but related to the same system of energy in the human body and in the world around us.

As someone who worked in healthcare for years (first aid/CPR, medicine administration), and having studied physical therapy, I have a hypothesis about what we call "chi". Chi is basically a simplified way of talking about circulation. Blood circulation, breath circulation, the flow of signals in the nervous system, etc.
Think of how we view optimal health. If our blood pressure, breathing, and reflexes are healthy, we are considered in optimal health. And what's the opposite of that? High blood pressure, breathing problems, and nerve damage. This is reflected in the anatomy chart of Chinese traditional medicine, especially in pressure points.
The circulation theory doesn't limit itself to anatomy, however. Physics, economy of motion, the flow of movement, all of these tie into the theory of "chi". This is why so many martial artists focus on flexibility and fluidity.
So chi was never meant to be something mystical. It is merely a reminder of the importance of smooth circulation and the physics of fluidity.

    • @nyhyl
      @nyhyl Před 2 měsíci +9

There is a lot truth in your thoughts. After all the concept goes that chi follows attention and blood follows chi. Chi not so much the blood circulation but rather the liveliness/vitality/activation of bodily functions in a certain area. The blood follows increases where chi is flowing. Chi is an abstract term to talk about vitality in generall. A healthy body, a body that works well is a body with good chi flow. Chi is like a potential and the bodily fluids and functions are what follow suit.

@@MrCmon113 Is it really so far fetched that there are some yet unexplained biomechanical interactions or perhaps even some lower level fundamental energy that life itself takes advantage of on a quantum scale?
I mean, we haven't even pinned down the quantum interaction by which mass applies the force of gravity, aka warps space time. The deeper our understanding of these fundamental forces get, the more mysterious the nature of the universe becomes. To top that off, literally everybody experiences gravity! It's the most apparent fundamental force, and yet we've just barely managed to develop theories that merely suggest why particles with mass miraculously possess gravity.
Now, imagine the possibility that there are other fundamental forces at work in the fabric of the universe that are not so obviously present, and you may get the impression that there is still an absolutely staggering amount of things to learn about the true nature of energy transfer amongst matter all around us. For all we know, the granularity of these interactions could be infinitesimal, destined to forever evade deterministic metrics.
Modern atomic theory is just barely two centuries old, while humans have been around for tens of thousands of years. Meaningful discovery and its science require both patience and an open mind.

Yes and no. It's really freaking complex...even if it's simple.
Attention is no different from consciousness. Air is in some way a transmitter of Life, Consciousness, and Energy. Attention/Focus/Directing consciousness relates to this so it's all those things.
It's basically internal focus, external sensing, the combination of the two, The Force, Breath, bioelectricity, the energy of the planet Earth, and the energy of the cosmos all kind of blended into one

You're not far from the truth. However, I believe that chi is better than just focus, because the human brain is very limited in the number of things it can focus on simultaneously. To put your body into the right alignment for a technique, you might have to focus on 15 joints and 26 muscle groups at the same time, which is humanly impossible. Chi simplifies this process by letting the subconscious mind deal with it. That's why chi is something you feel, not something you think about. With enough practice, you just need to visualise the flow of chi, and your body falls into alignment instinctively. Kind of like dancing.

I was taught by an amazing 85 years old Sensei, called Moritoshi Nakaema and he was OLD SCHOOL, he taught a couple of students, myself included the technique you were trying at 5:00, you can feel something like a ball forming between the hands, it's pretty weird as you can definitely FEEL it, but there is nothing in between and people can't touch it... I made the mistake of touching both hands and my hands went numb for a few second. Pretty weird.
There was no practical Hadouken or anything like it, but it was a pretty cool breathing exercise with some interesting results which I can't comprehend, even today.
Not sure if it's related, but I went from breaking boards to breaking ice blocks a few months after learning this. It definitely helped having a couple extra months of training, and the breathing and intent also helped, but I still get a weird feeling thinking back then.
Seeing your channel brings me fond memories :)

I used to practice this technique sitting across from a partner. It got to the point where I could close my eyes while they were doing it, and I could keep my finger pointed at wherever they moved their hands with the energy built up in between. It sort of visualized like a blue spot in the darkness of my closed eyes.

Chi or Ki is awareness, and maybe by concentrating in space between your hand you kind of materialize your awareness to outside world.

You know you have it right, when other people can feel something.

@@camelprotector Yeah, we could both feel warmth in the area between hands. I always wanted to try a thermal camera, but I didn't have the money.

@@camelprotector I can confirm. I did, essentially, this exercise in high school to try and explain how I never felt cold when it was freezing outside and my friends, skeptical at the time, could feel warmth when it was cold out. I could also focus on cooling the area between my hands when it was hot out and they confirmed that it felt cooler between my hands. It's so weird seeing other people, people I've never met or interacted with before (including a Shaolin Master and a "Karate Nerd" known for calling out sham/scam artists), confirming this.

Superb!! I have been practicing Aikido for more than 20 years and I agree totally with Master Shi Heng. The skeleton structure aligned with the proper muscle tension and relaxation are key to understand the concepts of Chi or Ki. It is all about feeling it.

But from what I understand, chi isn't real, as in material, or in any way related to energy. It doesn't exist. It's just a tool to visualise intent and focus.

I asked my sensie about the nature of Chi in our technque and he said that proper technique and chi flow are one and the same they live together.

I have seen a few videos with Master Shi Heng Yi on philosophical topics, and the way he articulates things is very thought-provoking. He is someone I wish I could get to sit down and have a deep conversation with. I recommend looking him up, he is full of applicable knowledge.
