    Can someone explain the concept? Is the idea that the funnel hole is completely plugged with the gauze-wrapped poo so that the water has to actually go through the poo to flow downwards?

      It´s called active larval migration. The L3 stage of the parasite "leave" through the holes of the gauze to the bottom. Here is the process www.rvc.ac.uk/review/parasitology_spanish/Baermann/Purpose.htm
