We really just have one goal - to make your food life better. Ok that, and be entertained at the same time. And have you learn a few things along the way. So let’s make it 3 goals then.
If you only want the steps to make something, like those vids shot from above with no people, no conversation no nuthin - then we are absolutely not for you. But if you wanna a little fun while you learn, then this is the place.
Cooking doesn’t have to be hard, it just has to be delicious.
-
THANK YOU ❗️ - Zábava
I like the format of all three of you eating and giving your options of the food.
Absolutely agree BUT they need mics 'cos they were too quiet and I really wanted to hear their comments.
I love shake n bake I grew up on it, but I also make the corn flake chicken. I think if there had been seasonings like garlic powder or onion powder in the other ones (not the shake n bake) that they would have tasted just as good. I always season my crushed up corn flakes before coating my chicken with it
Loved the video and love seeing Max and Chance :D
I hate corn flake chicken and Mac and cheese. I can't stand it... My family loves it. It is an abomination in my opinion.
I enjoy the taste test comparison videos. It not only shows what may be the best but also gives new cooking ideas
Shake -n-Bake was a sponsor of the old Andy Griffith Show. They would have the characters of the show endorsing it a couple different ways.
I remember one would have Andy telling Aunt Bea that this was the best "fried" chicken ever - - her reply was, "my goodness, Andy - I haven't made
fried chicken in a month of Sundays" - - "it's Shake-n-Bake" ! Then Opie would say, "Yeah, Shake-n-Bake - and I helped" ! I still use it today - it does a good job of making a tasty and crispy coating for baked chicken !
I had no idea it has been around that long!! I remember it as a kid in the '70s, it was extremely popular.
And pork chops, lol
Thanks for that memory! I can quote Andy word for word, but I had forgotten about those commercials.
I remember Shake N Bake from when I was a kid, but I honestly had no idea that they still made it. Great video, nice to see all 3 of you crunching away!
Cooked some Shake N bake chops a few weeks ago. Just as good as it's always been lol.
I remember as kid we had shake and bake every Friday night watching the incredible hulk.
@@davidbell4626 hell yeah lol. Simpler times.
The bbq shake and baked Is great ❤
Shake n Bake was the only one that was pre flavored and was made not to need to add any spices....so OF COURSE it won.
“Whatever is in the buttermilk helps to breakdown whatever in the chicken.” The type of explanation you can only get from Sam the Cooking Guy. Love it!!!!!
Acid in the buttermilk breaks down the chicken.
@@larrydevenney1008 I know that and I’m sure Sam does too. I just love how he explains stuff. Not a shot at Sam or anyone. Just joking around.
yo what do yall do with the extra air fyers after the shoot????
Shake-N-Bake has an automatic advantage over the others you used, it has spices blended in with basically cracker crumbs. If you added all those spices into the others, it might make a huge difference in which one won.
Yep. That is what I was thinking. You said you just want to put each one on the chicken as it is, but the Shake and Bake have seasoning added. Try and figure out their seasoning, add that into the other stuff and then try again. They will all most likely taste similar.
In fairness the shake and bake did also appear to have the best crust on it. Depending on how well done you normally like your crusts, the others still looked fine to me. But yh with the same or perhaps even better seasoning than the shake and bake, the results could be very different.
That's why I just told them. It's not fair. They need to season all of the crumbs
Never comment but greatly appreciate all your videos! (Made your Instant Pot Beef Stew last Sunday, hands down the BEST I've ever had... IN... MY...LIFE!!!!!) But, I think this is my most favoritist one so far! Perfect example of what you do & how you inform the younglings! Also, the fact that you do the work for us! I was totally rotting for the triscuit too! But Shake & Bake is on the menu this weekend for sure! First time I'll ever serve it to my kids! Thanks!
Just found your channel a couple weeks ago!!! Absolutely LOVE everything!!!!! I've made several of your recipes 😃😋😃😋. Keep the videos coming!!!!! ❤️🌶️🍅🔥
I had not used shake and bake in years and a little while back decided to give it a go. It's still honestly a good quick option. I haven't tried it in the air fryer, I'll have to do that. Great video!
Buy a flour called “Kentucky Kernel” it comes in a box with a picture of a guy in white hat that resembles Colonel Sanders. It’s the best coating for chicken.
Not only is videos fun and enjoyable to watch..i adore how you guys are always giving back.much love..one love..respect.
My mom passed when my sister and I were 11 and 10 so we had to make dinner and one of the ways we did it back in 1970 was Shake and Bake. The chicken always comes out great. I haven't had it for over 45 years so maybe it is time to give it a shot. Thanks for the video.
Something I've used in the past: potato flakes. Not the really thin flakes that look like baby cereal, but the thicker, almost pelletized ones. I can't remember the brand off-hand, but I swear it made some pretty damned awesome fried chicken.
This is so awesome, because I still use Shake n Bake all the time. I grew up eating it and have just continued on with it. I haven't tried in my air fryer though...so I know what the next box is for 😉😊 thanks guys! Love the videos always 👊🏼❤️
Thank you Jennifer Gridley!
They actually make it for the air fryer now, with lots of flavors. We love it on fish as well.
Great vid! Love the shake n bake!
If I want a quick and easy fried chicken fix shake and bake is my go to love the southern fried style there is also a glaze too which is very nice. I love shake and bake I always have it on hand for just that occasion!
Shake N bake for pork is pretty good too. I use them on occasion in my air fryer also. Thanks for testing them. I love ritz crackers, but they don't stay crispy when you bake with them unfortunately. Loved this video. Thanks guys!
Another great video. Chicken tenders are my all time favorite food! I usually mix this seasoned flour called Kentucky Kernel and those same Japanese Panko breadcrumbs together to coat my chicken, and then deep fry them. They’re amazing. The Kentucky Kernel seasoned brand flour is amazing I highly recommend you try it. I love how you always refer to the food as kids LOL “let’s flip these kids”
Very nice! Coincidentally, I'm making tenders tonight. If I would have watched before going to the store I would have picked up shake n bake for sure. I used to always make shake n bake and stopped bc, I don't remember why I stopped, but def gonna have to try it next time. Thanks guys! 👍🏼
I’m about to turn 39 and I definitely remember the commercials for Shake N Bake! Every time my mom made chicken with it, I would always say “and I helped!” 😂 To be honest, I did always help because the shaking was the best part! I haven’t used it in about 2-3 years but this reminded me it still exists and I’m going to go buy some and make these this week! Great video!
I absolutely love chicken tenders I can’t wait to try these
What about brown rice in your salad?
Try buying this flour called Kentucky Kernel. It’s usually next to the breadcrumbs in the store. It’s amazing. Perfectly seasoned.
Thanks for doing this video. The griddle guys did one and used Cap’n Crunch (without crunch berries) and they said it was really good too. Looks like I’m going to be having a lot of chicken strips in my future with all these good coatings to try.
Loved this! Always wanted to go down the rabbit hole with this and try cheezits, captain crunch, and other f-ed up ideas.
For a fairer test guys, I think you would have to look into the spices in Shake and Bake and then add that to the other 4 options. And also, in most cases, you don't flour and egg shake and bake. You slap that chicken/pork/shrimp right up on in the bag with the shake. But then, that is the great thing about S & B. Stuff is already there. Good vid.
Nah
@@Itsfld Nah
I'm so glad to see this :) I also grew up when Shake & Bake came out & was very popular :) I've not had it in years. After watching this, I do believe I'll pick some up next time I am at the grocery store. Thanks!
Same here
Only came out best as it's seasoned to do exactly what they were doing. None of the other breading would have gone on unseasoned. All I remember about Shake 'n Bake is that it's the only thing saltier than Lipton Onion Soup Mix.
As a chef for the past 22yrs I've found that the best chicken crumb coating is as follows
2 cups of panko breadcrumbs
1 cup of cornflakes
1 cup of Desiccated coconut
Plus the zest of 2limes
2 Tablespoons sweet paprika
1 teaspoon of black pepper and 1 teaspoon salt
Crush the cornflakes then place All the ingredients into a food processor and blitz for 1-2minutes or until everything is mixed well
That there is the holy grail of crumbs mix (chicken, pork, fish, beef even venison)
Have you considered mixing some of these toppings to see if you can the most ideal topping? I thank you for doing this experiment.
Love this! You need to include crushed pork rinds as a coating! Pork Rinds vs Shake N Bake video!
yas
Pork panko is great, whether by itself or mixed with almond flour.
I was hoping pork rinds was one of the test items as well, as I've heard of this as an option but never had it.
@@amstrad00 It is really good.
Shake n bake never fails. My favorite way to make chicken tenders is with a coating of Captain Crunch, once you try it you won’t want them any other way!
Breadcrumbs, Favorite seasoning, Softened unsalted butter. Mix all 3 until the mixture looks like wet sand, then chicken into a beaten egg and then into the breadcrumbs and into the air fryer for 7 minutes.
WOW I'm impressed Shake N Bake... will have to go get a box and give this old one a try with chicken tenders... love your idea of marinating in buttermilk and hot sauce. I wonder if you would have had a different result had you seasoned the other toppings in this experiment... I bet some parmesan grated with the panko would have really taken that chicken up a notch.
Excellent! Yay for Old School Shake-N-Bake! That little girl is like 63 years old now, and she still clings to her, "And I helped!" moment of fame! Thanks Sam! And Chance and Max! And BTW, that mustache looks like a 70's pr0nstar or Freddie Mercury look-alike contest! :D Love you guys, all three!
Very cool idea , was always wondering about this !
Kind of related......I've had pork Schnitzels in Kaiserslautern that were breaded in cornflakes. In nearly 5 years of living in Germany, I had a f'ng metric tonne of schnitzels. The cornflake breaded ones were good, really crunchy, but were not my favorite. Now, where YOU used panko to make your ridiculously large schnitzel a month ago, I think most German restaurants just use regular breadcrumbs. One of my co-workers over there who was half German, half American told me that what most people use for breading at home is to just go to the local bakery (every village has at least one) and get bread crumbs from there. These places bake their own bread, (OMG, amazing!) and will, on request, slice it on an electric gang machine that does the whole loaf at once. All the crumbs get collected in a pan at the bottom. My friend says that these dried out crumbs work great as breading for schnitzels. Natürlich, the kind of crumbs you get depends on what kinds of bread they have sliced so far.
Love your videos. Shake and Bake has seasonings in it, thus the advantage over the others. It even has the "King of Flavor" in it.
Wow thanks for this. I’ve tried to make chicken tenders twice in the air fryer and struck out because of the coating. Shake and Bake added to my shopping list 👍
Let me know how they are. I'm almost about to buy the breville joule
I haven't had Shake and Bake in decades but I can still remember its spices. Now I think the next time I'm at the store, I need to pick up a box and revisit this childhood taste memory.
Thanks for the honest review!
Well as you said you didn’t flavor them, and Shake n Bake is full of seasonings. But it did look mighty crunchy! Now-do a gluten-free coating test please! 🥰
Agreed, I was going to post the same comment about seasoning. To be fair maybe Sam should have seasoned the others with a consistent seasoning.
Exactly. It's the only one with seasoning of course it's going to be the best.
PORK PANKO!
I made chicken the same way a couple weeks ago but I used Town House FlipSide crackers (One side is pretzel and one side cracker) and it was a big hit. Since everyone enjoyed it, I tried it on tenderized pork chops for sandwiches and it was even better. Try it! You guys won't be disappointed. FYI... I dredged in seasoned flour for the first coating. Thanks for keeping us entertained guys! I always enjoy seeing new content and great new recipes.
From one Sam to another, I loved the fact that you tried chicken tenders multiple ways. My mother n law used to use Rice Crispies and that was really good. I recently saw a video of people using crunched up pork rinds aka Chicharoni's. I found some at Walmart already crunched up and it was good but next time I'm going to get some from our local mexican meat market and try it that way. Love your videos!!!!
Shake n bake is a classic.
A little tip. It is amazing to use for smoking wings.
Put your wings in a bowl.
Add a tablespoon of oil and 2 tablespoons of Frank's red hot original powder.
Mix and add 2 packets of Shake n bake.
Mix till coated and throw them in the smoker.
Cheers!
Try Captain Crunch
It's amazing
It's saltines.
Bruh, spoiler alert!
Liked the different taste tests, need to try that idea
Shake-n-Bake! I remember that from my childhood ... it seemed like everyone used it. Thanks for another great episode; nice to see the boys in front of the camera as well.
Kool! Yeah 70s and 80s we grew up on shake n bake. Looks like I'm trying it again.
really enjoy the beautiful lighting in this one sam
Here in New England, Ritz aren't real popular as a coating (that I'm aware of, anyway). It is, however, widely used as a topping for many baked seafood recipes. Great video!
I like to grind them, add a bit of melted butter and a bit of parmesan and use that to sprinkle on the top of an old-fashioned casserole like turkey tetrazzini before baking.
Just purchased a Nakiri and a Santoku for my parents as a Christmas gift for them before they move into their downsized retirement house! What better way to break in their new kitchen than with a new set of knives! Thank you, gentleman!
🤤 Good ol Shake n Bake for the win!!! I've also used crushed up potato chips and jalapeno cheetos crushed up . Keep up the awesome work, you guys rock. Cheers 🍻
I remember Shake N Bake.
I love it on pork chops.
Good job guys!
I never heard of Ritz being used for breading chicken or pork, even back in the day, but we used it pretty much exclusively when breading fish, especially trout and other wild-caught stuff. We pan fried it, not deep (or air, since that wasn't a thing yet). In truth, to this day, I think the buttery flavor of Ritz is pretty good with fish, but I find it weird to imagine on chicken.
Also, does feel like this one is more of a "what's the quickest / easiest" competition than "best" to put up a bunch of unseasoned options against one that has salt, celery, cornstarch, maltodextrin, citric acid and spices, which aren't listed by i'll assume to be something like garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, maybe rosemary or oregano. I doubt folks keep citric acid or maltodextrin around, but none of the rest are especially unusual and I expect go an awful long way. Hell, i'm sure you can get "italian" seasoned panko for a slightly more apples to apples comparison.
I'm new here. I love finding great food recipes and ideas so I'm excited I found your channel.
I'm 74 and have been using Shake n Bake all of my adult life. I even did a pre-cooked burger coated in it, then deep fried. Excellent!
Love the competition! Remember shake n bake... Need to try it again! Thanks for reminding me why I liked it in the first place! 😀😎😀
Totally fun video!!
Captain Crunch is the best crumb coating
Would love to see a revisit of this episode
Also in Canada Shake n Bake doesn’t come with a shaking bag anymore. Single use plastic I suppose.
Great this test!!! I loved it!! I want more!!! Kisses from Brazil!!!
Awesome review.
Triscut is the only one of the 3 that I can eat plain by itself out of the box and enjoy it just as much without any type of topping (I usually use Margherita Sandwich Pepperoni with either Provolone or Muenster cheese). They're like big healthy filling potato chips pretty much, if you like the taste of wheat instead. With some red wine or brown liquor it is luxurious junk food. No wonder that tiny box costs 5 bucks. lol. I used to make an oven baked chicken recipe pretty regularly that was pretty basic that would leave Shake N bake in the dust. Multi purpose flour, salt pepper, paprika and tons of butter on a baking sheet (enough to slightly pool). You can chose to use or not use egg wash (I believe I used no egg wash for the best skin crunch). 450 degrees for 1/2 hour per side for a whole sliced up chicken. If you're adventurous finish off with 5 to 10 mins of broil per side. Nothing like it, not even fried.
Would love to see some more awesome burrito recipes!
I love the Moink box. I signed up immediately once they sponsored you months ago. In my first box I decided to test their limits and I got 12 ribeye steaks, 2 salmon fillets (nearly a pound each) and my fillet mignon. Not only did they deliver exactly what I put in my box, I got a personal message about how much my order made them smile, and the note was plantable. We grew lovely flowers from it. We've continued to order it because the meat just tastes better. I'm on my 6th or 7th now and I couldn't be happier. If you are on the fence over the quality, let me assure you that it's way better than you can get in the grocery store! And I promise you, nobody is paying me for this endorsement;
Interesting… All looks Yum🍗✨
When Shake-N-Bake first came out (I was 8 years old), my mom bought it for chicken and for pork chops. She was a working mom, so anything that made the evening meal easier was tried. I still use it, to this day as a healthier alternative to frying. The seasonings in the mix just work for me. The only other thing I remember but can't tell you a specific recipe for, is that she found some recipe where she used the boxed potato "flakes" (an example would be the Idahoan instant potato flakes) for a chicken coating for oven-baked chicken and it was wonderful (to a 10-year-old kid).
Looks great!
Great test! I wasn’t surprised on the winner! I grew up on shake n bake!
My parents always used shake n bake when I was growing up and now at 25 I still use it to this day. It's so good and it's just perfect for breaded chicken and pork chops
It’s Shake-n-Bake and I helped! Love the show! Random QUESTION!!! Watching all your other episodes and I wondered for people that are in my predicament (no sense of smell due to a freak accident) when it comes to minced garlic….how do you stir until fragrant? 🤔😂😅 Your recipes are awesome!
Depends on pan temp. etc, but between 1 minute and a minute and a half.
When I was in my preteens my mom used club crackers and she always seasoned the flower. In my teen she got the ideal to use left over chips. My favorite was the club crackers. Back then everything was deep fried in either crisco or vegetable oil. I am 52 and my favorit now is fast food chicken from Raising Cane's.
I love Frosted Flakes mixed with panko on fried fish! It’s my Christmas Eve go too
My favorite breading is garlic flavored croutons. Throw a bunch in the food processor to break them down. Marinate the chicken in italian dressing, throw some italian dressing and hot sauce in the egg wash, double dredge and fry twice. Best fried chicken I've ever had.
Should try crumbled lays potato chips. The oil from the chips is really nice when air frying. I also used to toast some wheat bread and then crumble it up.
Try using Cheez-It crackers crushed. Take chicken breasts and cut length wise in half and preheat oven to 350deg. Brush chicken with melted butter and coat heavily in finely crushed crackers, then put in a lightly greased or buttered baking dish for 20 min. Turn all pieces and cook until done , aprox. 15 to 20 min more. Fantastic after they cool and even better the next day out of the fridge and lightly reheated. So easy and good!
lol!!! loved shake and bake !
Looks delicious.
"it's Shake n Bake and I helped".
Rang in my ears the entire video😄.
That was a fun video.
Shake-n-Bake has been my favorite since childhood! I even used it in meatloaf a few times
The timing of this video is perfect, I just recently got an air fryer so now my task sits before me to make these ... so fun, and I bet delicious!
You will notice that he spritzed the chicken with oil. That is necessary.
Whenever you find an air fryer recipe for a traditionally fried food that claims, "No oil necessary!", just pass it by. You might be able to get a nice crispy crust on something like a fatty, skin-on chicken thigh but lean coated meats and veggies need a bit of fat to "air" fry.
Just made these with the Shake & Bake Extra Crispy, in my Ninja Foodi air fryer. Amazing. Brined them in salt water as I didn’t have buttermilk but followed all the other steps. Awesome!
I still occasionally put that box of Shake-n-Bake in my shopping cart. Simple, reliable flavor and good crunch. I might need to get a box for tenders and make up a dinner salad with chicken tenders as the protein this week.
My aunt does this but with ground up captain crunch. It’s honestly amazing.
I am making the Shake and Bake chicken tonight!!!! Yummmm!!!!
The ranch shake and bake is AMAAAAZING
Shake-n-Bake!!! I went right out and ordered an original chicken and an original pork coating mixes !! Thanx!
The shake and bake pretzel flavor is a delight.
Hey! Love the taste tests! Have you tried a Dorito breading? I wonder how that will stack up against the options. Thank you Sam, Max and Chance for the great content! It got us thru the pandemic lockdowns.
When I was a kid, and I'm over 40, my mom made two things I loved! One was corn flake chicken and the other cube steak and gravy. I don't think you've ever done a cube steak episode?
Never heard of shake and bake🙄looked yummie💯👍
Sam, love your content. There is one variation that I think you should try too. For those that are trying to reduce carbs. You can use crushed up pork rinds as your bread crumbs. turns out good.
I always found the commercials to be funny. It’s shaken back and I helped said the little child. Love your Channel I have picked up and tried many of your suggestions. Scott Webb
love the Show!!!! Rosemerry and Oil Triscuit with melted Mozz! AWESOME!!!!
Everyone of those can be pre toasted in a frying pan with butter, also home made breadcrumbs with Italian seasoning and olive oil toasted in the oven or pan are so much better especially when you have some stale bread you don't want to throw out, works great with sourdough bread, white bread etc... but not so much for wheat bread or anything with seeds and nuts👍
I did not know they still made shake and bake. I loved it on pork chops. I knew it would win this contest. Thanks, gonna head to the store and look for it!!!
I remember my mom making Shake & Bake when I was a kid, many years ago. I might have to try it again. But I’m sure any crunchy coating would be fine with the right mix of spices
Nice job guys. So obviously, the Shake-n-Bake is the only one with it own seasonings. Any of the others would be good, as long as you added some seasonings, just like the "actual" fried chicken coating. Different things react differently. Triscuit for instance, love them. Cheese & crackers, my favorite Brunch. Triscuit & cheese? Nope. something about the Triscuit and the cheese together melds together into something really salty. Don't know why. Again, nice job. BTW, my favorite Shake-N-Bake was always the barbecue, as a kid, I turned 58 a few days ago. We have tried it a few times just for fun, and it just doesn't melt on like it used. Damned sugar police! Just like a McDonald's fry is thin, hopefully hot, and taste kinda like the paper container it comes in. They've been whined into submission of the "Change your oils, meats, sugar, breads............and anything you have, so we don't get fat eating there 25 times a week. Duh!
Shake N Bake is the shizza! Loved it as a kid. My mom would always use it on old chicken in the fridge.
Try the thin triangle triscuts! .....AMAZING!
Hard for me to get hubby to watch with me! Especially since I do the cooking…he likes watching because he likes doing the grilling and I season and now he is experimenting with seasoning himself thanks to your videos! Thank you!
Shake-n-bake brings me back to my childhood, wow. 🥰
